Ensign Meow has good reason to be concerned

“Wait a minute! Why am I the only red shirt on this Away mission!?”

Yes it’s a nerdy Star Trek joke, Chelsey W.

  1. Caitlin says:

lol Meg, I just got back from taking my dad to the new Star Trek for Father’s Day… :D

  2. chanpon says:

Red sweater makes Ensign Meow’s head look unusually large.

  3. Von Zeppelin says:

Just a moment, Ensign Meow. Step away from the transporter pad. Away Team members are required to wear pants.

  4. Not That Mike The Other Mike says:

In that spirit, here’s a funny video compilation of “red shirt deaths” from “Star Trek.”

  5. SoCalSis says:

Don’t hold your breath for Yeoman Meow. Phaser Fodder, we used to call ‘em. Prognosis… Let’s just say, don’t buy any green bananas, Mr. Meow!

  6. Where does one even shop for a waffle knit shirt in that size?

[We’re talking small scale here; probably wouldn’t be too hard to sew it yourself, if you’re a crafter… – Ed.]

  7. With that black/grey cap on his head I’m afraid he’s been assimilated by teh borg.
But don’t worry, I think we can rehabilitate him like Seven of Nine. It’s a very delicate procedure, you all better stay waaaay back over there. For your own safety.
(stuffs the Ensign into pocket & transports away)

  8. We LIKE nerdy Star Trek jokes!

  9. LOL nerdy Star Trek Joke!!! My very first thought was, “red shirt, title Ensign… Noooooooooooooooooooooo. ”
Don’t go, Ensign meow, don’t go!!!!

  10. He looks just like an older version of my Ollie. Nose freckle and all.

    http://cuteoverload.com/2009/04/05/how-do-my-extensions-look/

  11. In some of the books there IS a cat species crew member! a femalesecurity officer if I recall correctly, its been a long time since I read it.

  12. Blondie says:

It may be a nerdy Star Trek joke, but apparently we’re all nerds, cuz we all got it… :-)

Kitty is so purrrrty! Too bad my darn teleporter isn’t working or she’d be beamed into my ship…

  13. Blondie — well it’s not like this is a quilting bee, here.
Blessed are the geeks, for they shall inherit the (virtual) Earth.

  14. SoCalSis says:

I’m having some fun picturing the robing process. I know what MY kittie would do if I tried to put something so snug on her… not to mention it’s RED and even Kittie knows what THAT means. Can you say “Kitteh Buzzsaw”?

  15. OH NOES! GET THAT RED SHIRT OFF THE KITTEH!
    ONLY THE RED SHIRTS DIEEEE!

He’s too cute to pass. Although, Bones wore his fair share of red shirts, so there was an exception a few times.

  16. Aww, he looks like my Stinky, except Stinky would certainly be a command-level officer.

  17. KittehMamax3 says:

Tell me there’s a velcro closure on the back, please. Otherwise, I feel that I have failed miserably at bringing up a calm, non-kill the humans if they even attempt this, kitteh. I can’t imagine stuffing or UN-stuffing said kitteh without MAJOR arterial blood spurts….

Too cute, though. Watch out for “tar blobs” there, Ensign…..The first captain didn’t make it past the first episode because of one of those things…..

  18. Quick, we need to get this poor bebeh a character shield.

  19. tracylee says:

oh noes, I guess I should get my dog a different jacket for wintertime… can’t have the behbeh in a red shirt!

  20. How can his paws even press buttons and stuff, I wonder.

  21. Scottie always wore the red shirt. This little guy is all:
“I haven’ goot the power Capn!”
“I’ve giv’n her all she’s got captain, an’ I canna give her no more.”
“A can’t change the laws of physics. A’ve got to have thirty minutes.”

Then with an elastic band and some dysonium crystals this little guys would save the day.

  22. mewlington says:

OH MAH GAWDS! Red Alert! All hands brace for uber cute, set phazers to “pew”

  23. Dilithium crystals!

I second Wend – don’t go Ensign Meow! Steal a shuttle craft, anything, but don’t go on the away mission!!

  24. leslie thomas says:

While we’re on the topic …two considerations for further consideration (?)
    1. Did ennybuddy else’s brudders, refer (affectionately, I SWEAR!!)
to (we only ever watched the ORIGINAL St. Trek)….as “Star Blecchhh”??
No? I thought my brudders were pretty macho & cynical.

    2. Did Scottie ever have any dialogue about anything other than
    a)Scotch & Whiskey…
    b) the lack of capacity of the ship & impending doom & insufficient time to solve this episode’s mortal dilemma?

(I think of him as basically the exact parallel character to (Not That Jim, the Other)
Jim — in Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom, who was forever doing something heroic like standing on the edge of a cliff in a monsoon, with ravenous lions running toward him, whilst Marlon Perkins (thank you to the C/overloader who recently reminded me of HIS name) sat comfortably with a mint julep in his Barkalounger, calmly narrating the story of Jim’s encroaching doooooooommmmmmmmm…….

  25. CassidyAthena says:

I can’t believe no one wrote it, so I must: “Beam me up, Scotty!!” Sorry all, but I’m just a cat- and cute- loving Treki nerd ;-)

  26. E.A. McCrary says:

My last-cat-but-the-current-one was named after Scotty. When he was a tiny kitten, he had a purr out to ——————————>> here, several times as big as he was. And every time he let go with it, I somehow kept hearing: “Captain, I’ve got the engines tuned up and purrrrrrrrrin’ like a kitten…”

So said dear unsuspecting little kitten spent the rest of his life called Montgomery.

‘Course he grew up to be huge (a righteous 2 kilos; I sometimes suspected his daddy was a cougar), had adventures all over the world over on rec.pets.cats.community, and lived to be a well-loved 17.

  27. This kitten makes me want to violate the prime directive.

  28. *coughEXPENDABLEcough*

My husband and I spend every episode playing “Spot the expendable.” And “spot the Manwhore.” (every ship has one!) *coughKIRKcough* Oh man! Must have something in my throat. *coughRIKERcough*

  29. Chad R. says:

There was a catlady redshirt in the animated series. I believe she survived, however.

  30. Once, at Christmastime, a got a little sweater like this for our Russian Blue, who very sweetly allowed me to put it on him; haowsumebber, hims wuz totallee paralyzzed, no kidding, and just sat there like a statue until I removed it; what a good boy he was, now over the Rainbow Bridge…….

  31. Caitlin says:

@ EA McCrary: I named my cat Geordi for the same reason!

  32. Wow, my two favorite things combined! ENGAGE

  33. Not being a Star Trek fan, I don’t get Star Trek references but the kitty sure looks cute in that little sweater.

  34. THe cat story for star trek is Uhuras Song by Janet Kagen.

A great read if you are a cat lover or a trekkie.
or both. I read it years ago and still remember most of the story line.

As to the death of the red shirts Quick kitten hide in the closet!

  35. Oh a little info on this amazing book

Star trek the original crew go to this planet which is inhabited by people size cats who are well developed Characters plenty of suspense and action and an excellent plot.
Thought provoking ideas and People sized cats that talk Need I say more?

  36. BonzoGal says:

    (Galaxy Quest:)
Jason Nesmith: You’re not gonna die on the planet, Guy.
Guy Fleegman: I’m not? Then what’s my last name?
    Jason Nesmith: It’s, uh, uh – -I don’t know.
Guy Fleegman: Nobody knows. Do you know why? Because my character isn’t important enough for a last name, because I’m gonna die five minutes in.
Gwen DeMarco: Guy, you have a last name.
Guy Fleegman: DO I? DO I? For all you know, I’m “Crewman Number Six”! Mommy… mommy!

  37. Is there AIR?? Do you KNOW????

  38. Mary (the first) says:

OMG I didn’t get the red shirt reference until watching a bit of the video that NTMTOMike mentioned in # 4.. then it became clear.. but what made me gasp aloud in delight at the kitteh’s WHISKERS! I love kitteh whiskers sooooo moshe!! This is a lovely photo. It might have to become my new screen saver.

  39. Mary (the first) says:

    (“delight IS the kitteh….”)

  40. Yay for Galaxy Quest!

I had a friend who named her guinea pig Jean-Luc Pigcard…

  41. Paunchie says:

    LOL @ *cough RIKER cough*

  42. LOL I love this post not just the picture but all the comments

  43. TrekkieCat says:

Congradulations, CuteOverload, here is my soul. You earned it.

    *melts, steals kitten*

  44. Ensign Meow is saying “Get this stupid thing off me right now!”

  45. SoCalSis, my kitty, Badger, would be a Kitty Buzzsaw when her front claws are to be clipped  and that is BEFORE the clipping even starts

  46. Heck with the red shirt, those superlong, superbusy whiskers denote a mutant space cat.

    *cuddle cuddle*

  47. Hon Glad says:

I didn’t get the reference, but having read the peeps comments, I am now fully clued up on Star Trek law.

  48. Excellent Trek reference!!

  49. Love the Star Trek reference. Hates the YouTube-message “This video is not available in your country due to copyright restrictions.” Aaarghhh! They deserve some red shirts themselves and lots of Away missions.

  50. Star Trek + Kitteh? Even CAPSLOCK cannot express my fangirly joy! This post made my week, and it’s only Monday!

Also, @mewlington, “set phasers to ‘pew'” may have just made my month. That was excellent.

  51. Katrina says:

KiIler’s Daddy and I saw the new Star Trek movie- well done! It did not disappoint!

  52. Ruth Miller says:

uh-oh! better hope there arn’t any Romulans or Clingons on that planet…or else!
