You also put something that smells like you in the cage with them (unwashed t-shirts are good) for a while so they get used to your scent. Then they’re more likely to uncurl when you hold them.

First, wrap them in a hedgie blanket or a large towel so that no quills will poke you, and then sit in a comfy chair and put wrapped up hedgie in your lap. Make sure hedgie face is exposed and just enjoy holding your little hedgie. I used to sit with them nightly, all in their hedgie bags and they make great lap pets.
