The Fabulous Anna Banana!

by Not That Mike The Other Mike on June 4, 2009

Meet Anna Banana, the girl with a peel!
She makes the boys sweat and the ladies squeal!
Her friends may be fussin’ and carryin’ on,
“but that’s not my style,” she says with a yawn.
“I’m a rat of distinction, I’m not just a cog.
I’m clever and cute and I’ve got my own blog.”
So read all about her, and meet all her friends,
They live at The Rat Shack, where fun never ends!

Thank you for contributing to this week’s emerging “banana” theme, Jane S.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen ratz that fluffeh before.

8 Ladre 06.04.09 at 7:54 am

I am nearly rat-phobic, so it’s saying a lot when I say: Qte! Why are they so floofy? Are they crossed with ferrets or something?

9 skippymom 06.04.09 at 8:03 am

She is not yawning, she is singing an aria.

10 hon glad 06.04.09 at 8:24 am

Anna sings-
I yi, yi, yi, yi, I like you very much
Ci, ci, ci, ci, ci, I think your grand.
While wearing banana headress.

11 divinebluesky 06.04.09 at 8:29 am

That has to be the cutest yawn I’ve ever seen!

Oh, this is too wonderful for words. Do you know how hard it is to get this kind of picture? I’ve had 25 rats over the years since 2001 and I have yet to get one of these. Just one of the many reasons I love the ratties.

14 AnnaBanana 06.04.09 at 8:42 am

Yay!!! That’s me!! Who says rats are gross? *pout* …I’m wonderful!
I’m a dumbo rex beige bareback and most of my litter siblings were rexes which is why we all looks so fluffy. Yay!!

15 betty 06.04.09 at 8:47 am

I’m not a huge fan of rodent pets, although I don’t have anything against them. This has been the kind of morning, however, in which a blanket full of rats has been the high point of the day.

hon glad, thanks for the shout out to the late and wonderful Carmen Miranda. Everybody Samba!!

“ToMORROW! ToMORrow! I love ya! ToMORrow!”

31 balamuthia 06.04.09 at 9:46 am

@Paunchie-

No, we southerners don’t eat nutria or rats and contrary to popular belief we DO wear shoes and are literate. thanks.

32 Zanna 06.04.09 at 9:46 am

Oh no, how did you know? My name is Susannah and I like bananas. When I was a little girl my parents were fans of Saturday Night Live, and the Gilda Radner character “Roseanne Roseannadanna”- this led to my least favorite of childhood nicknames:
Susannah Banana Rosanna Anna Danna! (usually said three times fast).

*blushes*- my sister reads this blog too, now she’s totally going to spot my post…

33 Paunchie 06.04.09 at 9:48 am

I sorta remember that chiquita banana song – sheesh I’m not THAT old now am I??

Si si si si sisi!

34 Loris 06.04.09 at 9:50 am

Oh, nicely DONE, people. Not only have you made me spend hours chortling at one of the cutest blogs I’ve ever seen; I’m also going to have that song stuck in my head for at least 48 hours. With bonus rat-related alternate lyrics. I’ve already been falling behind on my grumpy quota all week, and now you’ve put me in a weekend mood one day early. Bah!

35 Cambridge Rat Mom 06.04.09 at 9:52 am

@annabanana, you are a goddess!!

A healthy rattie’s teeth should be yellow and not white like ours. If a rattie’s teeth are white then they are probably unwell.

I quote here from The Rat and Mouse Club of America (yes, there’s a club for everything and everyone) “Contrary to its appearance, the yellow/orange color of the rat incisor is not a sign of poor hygiene — it is perfectly normal. Rather, the color of the incisor enamel is due to the presence of an iron-containing pigment, and the shade of orange deepens with age starting about 21 days after birth. This is in contrast to the situation in other mammals such as humans, cattle and pigs, where a brownish color of the teeth is characteristic of the rare bone disease porphyria.”

36 Paunchie 06.04.09 at 9:53 am

Hey no offense to yer shoe-wearin’ self balamuthia, but the person who told me that bit about nutrias happens to come from Louisiana, just outside of New Orleans. So there.

37 Cambridge Rat Mom 06.04.09 at 9:57 am

A nutria is NOT a rat; it is a rodent. Rats are also rodents. Not all rodents are rats. Say that three times fast.

38 Katrina 06.04.09 at 10:04 am

42 brinnann 06.04.09 at 10:16 am

Balamuthia, there are some die-hard Cajuns who still eat it. I think you should blame Andrew Zimmern for introducing that fact to the world.

44 brinnann 06.04.09 at 10:19 am

Cambridge Rat Mom, sorry, we just call them nutria rats down here. It’s one of those southernisms that are wholly inaccurate but most people will never admit to knowing.

45 lphoenix 06.04.09 at 10:24 am

so so QTE!!!! I never knew they could yawn, even! Rats are clean – maybe they’re fuzzy-looking because they just washed? That blog site is pretty good, some of these rats were destined to be hawk food but got rescued!

46 Holly 06.04.09 at 10:28 am

49 charliewabba 06.04.09 at 10:57 am

my goodness – there’s a whole middle to the Chiquita Banana song that I had never heard before. My mom taught it to us when I was a little girl. Many years ago, my sister called me long distance and made me sing it to a friend of hers to settle a bet.

I’m AnnaBanana and I’ve come to say
Rex Dumbos must be treated in a special way.
When their ears are big and have a pinkish hue,
Rex Dumbos look their best
And sing their best for you.

You can put us in a hammock
(doot doo doo doot)
Or you can tuck us in your rack-ack-ack!
Any way you want to treat us,
(doot doo doo doot)
Just be sure that you don’t eat us

(we aren’t nutria)

50 Theresa 06.04.09 at 11:13 am

Wow, three earworms and counting.

51 cheshirekittehkat 06.04.09 at 11:22 am

I was just thinking how much fun it would be to give their liddol hammock a push and watch them swing back and forth……. (the one who would be going “Squeeeeeeeeee!” would be me…..)

52 AuntieMame 06.04.09 at 11:24 am

LOL, Theresa. I am stubbornly humming the “Rat Shack” earworm, to try to keep the others out of my brain.

Rat Sha-a-ack! That’s where it’s at!

53 Katrina 06.04.09 at 11:25 am

Yes, I have been chastened, I did not include the hyphens. I’ll go slink off now-to the shower and dry off and try to get some sleep so I can think more clearly.
To the Bat Shower! wot-wot-wot, cheepcheepcheep, blub, blub, blub.

Only forty-five minutes from Broadway,
Think of the changes it brings;
For the short time it takes,
What a diff’rence it makes
In the ways of the people and things.
Oh! What a fine bunch of rubens,
Oh! what a jay atmosphere;
They have whiskers like hay,
And imagine Broadway
Only forty-five minutes from here.

“The most delicious thing in the world is anna banana,” said English statesman Benjamin Disratli in 1831…

69 anner 06.04.09 at 2:17 pm

Oh, this is just torture. I so want to have ratties again, but I’m waiting until we buy a house so that there will be a room with space enough for the cage, and limited kitty access.

Also, I don’t know if my landlady would approve, and I don’t want to ask because, dammit, I’m just so sick of people and their insulting reactions to rats as pets. I once asked perspective landlady if my 2 rats were OK, assuring her that my mom was willing to take them if not, and she freaked out and gave me a long lecture about how, “If your mother can’t keep them anymore for some reason, that doesn’t mean they come here,” and other slowly-enunciated statements that clearly implied (a) she believed I was lying and/or planning to sneak them in and (b) she thought of me as a small child (I was 30 at the time). I did not end up renting from this woman.

Anyhoodle, Anna Banana’s is now on my list of daily interweb visits. Will it help fill the void, or make that void feel all the more empty? Only time will tell.

70 Ellen W. 06.04.09 at 2:24 pm

Wasn’t there a study a few years back that proved baby rats giggle when they’re tickled? It’s too high for human ears to hear.

I concur that Anna Banana and her Bunch are adorable, and now I will be singing Banana Phone at time-and-a-half speed for the rest of the week.

Anyone have a link to the cats eating bananas set to Banana Phone?

71 JohnnieCanuck 06.04.09 at 2:48 pm

I have a neighbour who legally changed her name to Anna Banana. I was talking to her just a day or so ago. She’s made a name for herself around here.

Ok, peeps… some of you are just NOT LISTENING!

Rule of Commenting: you are not allowed to post a comment unless you have already read all the previously posted comments.

(It’s amazing how much time & space would be saved if all would just r-e-a-d.)

1. No, rats are not gross. Except for maybe the N.Y. rats that live in sewers. But YOU would be gross too if you lived in a sewer! (And by the way, rats are one of the cleanest animals there is.)

2. These ratties are so fluffy because as AnnaBanana said herself, they are rexes. Rexes have curly hair so they are more… well… floofy.

3. No, the teeth are not stained or dirty. Rat teeth are supposed to be that color — their lower teeth are yellow and the upper more orange. If they were white then you
would need to be worried.

Ok, I’m done. Maybe. (Sheesh!)

On a totally unrelated note… Now Ziggy, you be nice to poor LH. After all it appears that LH’s mom never told him/her that “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything”. And most likely LH has led a very sheltered life and has no idea what wonderful pets rats can be. He/she probly has never been introduced to a rat… unless of course it was in a sewer… in which case… well… you know what they say? “Location, location, location.”
