“We want your dog to hold their head high in what they are wearing even if it has a pom pom on it”

by Meg on March 9, 2009

Those nutjobs over at Etsy are at it again! Get a load of these hats!

"If you live somewhere cold and windy and your dog’s ears turn into little icicles on the walk, this is the hat you’ve been waiting for…"

Il_fullxfull56471916

"This is our most practical hat and is completely adjustable for the best fit so it will stay on for a long walk. It’s very soft and comfy."

2 Redzilla 03.09.09 at 8:53 pm

Knit one, bleen one.

3 sunnymum 03.09.09 at 8:53 pm

Simply adorable!

4 Pip 03.09.09 at 8:54 pm

But the dog’s ears aren’t covered. How can it keep them warm?

Wait a minute! This is just some crazy excuse to make dogs look ridiculous for their people!

I’m onto you, Etsy! And I’m telling all my doggy friends!

5 Brenda 03.09.09 at 8:54 pm

I think it’s hilarious! I’d buy one for my dog. If I had a dog! :)

6 Chantel 03.09.09 at 9:17 pm

Well the hat is just daft, but what a beautiful dog! Gorgeous little face – want to hug her/him :D

7 Charlie 03.09.09 at 9:20 pm

im not a fan of putting clothes on animals but this doglet seems almost proud of his bogey green hat o.o

8 Ginger 03.09.09 at 9:23 pm

Puppy not included.

9 Natalie 03.09.09 at 9:33 pm

*now also available in a matching people version!*

Oh my

10 Mary (the first) 03.09.09 at 9:35 pm

Yeah, my first thought (ok, second thought; first thought was “adorable puppeh!”) was that the hat will NOT keep the pupper’s ears warm. It’s definitely the QTE though.

11 Manda Bain 03.09.09 at 9:36 pm

Oh wow…he/she looks just like my BFF’s Boston, Murphy. And he would SOOO wear this. He’s a little on the soft side…I bought him a doggy tee that says “Hug Me” which he loves to wear – and he literally puts his little paws around your neck and rests his head on your shoulder. I don’t know if my chic and stylish friend would put him in a knit cap though…dammeet! I think I might do it anyway!!

12 Mary (the first) 03.09.09 at 9:37 pm

The doglet’s name is Bean!!

13 Mel2 03.09.09 at 9:58 pm

Take off, hoser. Quit starin’ at my toque.

15 Anne Boleyn 03.09.09 at 10:05 pm

“we want your dog to hold THEIR????? head high?
Love the hat…. Hate the grammar.

16 Megan 03.09.09 at 10:20 pm

Yeah, but who is going to put his/her on what is essentially a product advertisement?

17 Megan 03.09.09 at 10:24 pm

Oh also, the one pictured isn’t the one that covers up the ears, which is where the caption came from. You see the ear-covering hat if you go to the link.

18 catloveschanel 03.09.09 at 10:29 pm

Chic! But they’re always fashion forward in Boston. I guess pea green and peacock blue is in for spring. Don’t know if I could pull that look off… or if I would even want to.

19 pitu 03.09.09 at 10:34 pm

Awesome! Loving the doggy and the hat!!

20 ding 03.09.09 at 10:39 pm

AWwww, cute little Boston. Needs matching waistcoat.

21 January 03.09.09 at 10:41 pm

I think it is lovely and fits quite well.

22 snorglepup 03.09.09 at 10:59 pm

Yea! Matching hats and sweaters all around!!11!

23 snorglepup 03.09.09 at 11:00 pm

The prices aren’t bad either…

24 Nik 03.09.09 at 11:05 pm

The first pic looks almost like a formal portrait!

25 Theresa 03.09.09 at 11:13 pm

Now that’s a church hat!

26 Theresa 03.09.09 at 11:14 pm

Whoa, check it, the hat’s sold out!!!

27 AuntieMame 03.09.09 at 11:20 pm

It’s a Boston Bean! Heh!

(Anne Boleyn, I noticed the same thing this morning on LinkedIn. “So-and-so has updated THEIR profile.” Ugh!)

28 Berg 03.09.09 at 11:40 pm

I don’t want the hat if it doesn’t include Bean. He’s adorable!

29 KittyMarthaPoo 03.10.09 at 12:05 am

ah, such a STYLIN’ Boston!

30 260Oakley 03.10.09 at 12:21 am

Just add a little weed and you have Boston Baked Bean.

31 scooterpants 03.10.09 at 12:36 am

looks jus like katy perry.
her people will be contacting your people. :)
(i kill me)

32 Blondie 03.10.09 at 12:41 am

Awww, Bean is adorable!

However, I interpreted this picture slightly differently… I think Bean is saying “If I have to wear this stupid hat one more second I’m going to bite the first thing I can reach…”

But maybe that’s just me. :-)

33 Lerrinus 03.10.09 at 1:09 am

*snickers*
Only you, Oakley! :-D

34 Shana 03.10.09 at 1:26 am

they take custom orders I got one for my hound/beagle cross – even CUTER if possible on dogs with floppy ears.

35 Mel2 03.10.09 at 1:53 am

[Reciprocates with 4 lbs of back bacon for Theo]

36 Redbone 03.10.09 at 1:53 am

Well that made me smile kindasorta against my will. Haha what a cute little beanie.

For those who oppose clothing for animals: when I was a kid, I had a daschund for whom I bought a suitably sized hat. It had a velcro chinstrap and was shaped roughly like a baseball cap, complete with a bill that really did shade the eyes without obscuring vision.

That dog ADORED his hat. He would get all giddy when he saw the hat come out, and would hold still while I put it on him. Didn’t matter if he was going out somewhere or just hanging around the back yard. He loved that hat.

I tend to think some dogs enjoy clothing because it makes them feel like they fit in with their humans.

37 Redbone 03.10.09 at 1:56 am

Dooo dee dee dee doo dut dee deee

Dooo dee dee dee doo dut doo dooo

Okay uh, good day.

(just saw the above hose-head jokes)

38 Birdcage 03.10.09 at 2:34 am

I’m tired of the Canadian stereotypes, ok, eh?

39 foxy 03.10.09 at 2:41 am

Redbone, Redbone, Redbone

Not sure if you’re a real Canadian or just a wannabe, but the word isn’t ‘uh’! It’s ‘eh’, mostly pronounced like ‘ay’ or ‘hay’. I don’t care if you want to use it as a stereotype, but for the love of god spell it correctly!

40 Theresa 03.10.09 at 2:43 am

“Wannabe Canadians.” Wow, there’s something to contemplate.

41 Arr Arr 03.10.09 at 2:44 am

Reminds me of “The Girl with the Pearl Earring.” If only little Bean had a pearl earring.

42 berthaservant 03.10.09 at 2:55 am

Lol Mel and Teho.

This dog possesses excellent modeling skills. I recommend the nearest pet-related fashion reality show, stat! (Project Bunway?)

43 totalee puppy 03.10.09 at 3:56 am

Ginger…”puppy not included” ROFL!

44 darling duck 03.10.09 at 4:04 am

Love the hat. My duckdom
for a matching sweater for the cutest little Boston on the Bunway. (Thanks,
berthaservant)

45 danielle 03.10.09 at 4:06 am

I luv u bean!

46 rah 03.10.09 at 4:09 am

Oh, come on, he looks miserable. What kind of owner would subject a helpless dog to wear something that ridiculous?

47 Jill 03.10.09 at 4:14 am

haha, the hat is already sold out. understandable though it is soo cute.

Adorable!

48 foxy 03.10.09 at 4:24 am

Well, there were a few wannabes with the last president….

49 Vanessa 03.10.09 at 5:08 am

Touche foxy, that’s very true.

50 JB 03.10.09 at 5:17 am

Arr Arr — girl with a pearl earing pose…YES! bet the top not color help you make that connection, too.
Now, is it just me, or is there silent pleading for rescue in that pup’s eyes in the second pic?
Oh, the indignities he must endure at granny’s (obviously!) whims…hope he at least gets good kibble.

51 Kar 03.10.09 at 6:00 am

Some of us have been waiting for a “knitted” section. Not that we’re hinting or anything.

52 Hon Glad 03.10.09 at 7:22 am

Glaucous green and cornflower blue ‘interesting’ colour combo. I don’t think I’ll be copying it.

53 MoonCatty 03.10.09 at 8:19 am

“Dog walks down the street in a hat like that, you know he’s not afraid of anything.”

54 Brenda 03.10.09 at 12:00 pm

Just wait till you find that poop in your shoe!!

55 Meredith Perdue 03.10.09 at 12:29 pm

These are super cute!

56 Nancy 03.10.09 at 12:55 pm

Just goes to show ya, dogz will do anna’thing for a belleh rub.

57 Macey 03.10.09 at 12:56 pm

First of all, they are lucky to have a sweet puppeh that allows them to take it’s picture, sitting all nice and such.

Second of all, they’re lucky they have such a sweet puppeh that hasn’t TAKEN THEIR HANDS OFF for putting stupid hats on it!

58 Anna von Beaverplatz 03.10.09 at 1:29 pm

Etsy = <3

Doggie w/hat = <3

59 Kristabelle 03.10.09 at 1:52 pm

260Oakley gets the WIN on this post!!!! I am still smilingk and that’s a tough one these days!!!

60 Maliika 03.10.09 at 2:13 pm
61 Lyndse 03.10.09 at 2:20 pm

I don’t see how much that hat would really do about keeping the doggie’s ears from turning into icicles…

62 Kiragirl 03.10.09 at 2:38 pm

you guys need a new category, “I shall BITE you.” (for making me wear this ____ fill in the blank.)

63 Kiragirl 03.10.09 at 2:41 pm

“earcicles”

64 kodalai 03.10.09 at 3:19 pm

I will never get how people come to conclude that the animals in the pictures are angry/scared/traumatized/humiliated when their body language seems to indicate that they’re perfectly calm and happy…

This little guy is all proche and chillin, mugging it up for the camera, if you ask me :)

65 superboymom 03.10.09 at 3:28 pm

Beanie baby!

66 Andrea 03.10.09 at 4:10 pm

A few things:

a) Bean is prosh; I think we can all agree on that.

b) The captions underneath the pictures actually refer to their ‘Blue Baron’ hat (http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=21365555 ) – which does cover the ears – NOT this hat (not sure why these captions got put under these pictures…).

c) For all the people who feel sorry for Wee Bean, take a look at the info the sellers provide on their ‘Profile’ page: “We design apparel for dogs, not people clothes for dogs. The dog’s safety, comfort, warmth, ease of movement, and yes even their pride are our top priorities…and then we’ll make it cute. We want your dog to hold their* head high in what they are wearing even if it has a pom pom on it, and if Bean won’t wear it, we won’t sell it to you. Please don’t purchase items for your pet if you think they will not enjoy the experience. Bean associates modeling with lots of positive attention, liver bits and peanut butter.
*I am aware that “their” should be his/her in this case (my mother is an English teacher) but that just sounds goofy as a motto. ya’ll know what I mean?” (http://www.etsy.com/profile.php?user_id=6458655 )

d) I hope the asterisk above puts to rest the grammatical pangs several of us grammar-philes have felt. I know it made me feel better :) .

67 Aoife 03.10.09 at 4:44 pm

Wish my dog would be such a patient model. I make dog sweaters I want to sell, I need to take pics of the sweaters on a dog, but mine has a supermodel/diva snit fit by the third sweater and refuses to cooperate after that. I keep telling her that, unless she’s making $10K a day, the “I’m the queen of it all” attitude isn’t allowed, but she won’t listen.

68 Paunchie 03.10.09 at 5:25 pm

“Glaucous green” it is a rather barftastic shade of green, hon glad!

69 AuntieMame 03.10.09 at 5:31 pm

The obvious grammatical solution (besides just saying “his” and “he” – because dogs have better things to do with their time than to take offensive at generic language) is to make it plural.

“We want your dogs to hold their heads high in what they are wearing even if it has pom poms on it.”

70 inktupbbw 03.10.09 at 5:59 pm

*swoon* A BT! An epic hansum BT in a crocheted hat?! HOMG…I may need to go lie down, teh qte…it makes meh woozy. Not so big on the green of this hat, but being black/white means you can pull off almost any color combo.

71 CoffeeCup 03.10.09 at 8:31 pm

That’s a size small? nooooo! I want one for my rabbit!!

72 anner 03.10.09 at 10:35 pm

Yyyyes…”practical”.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who questions the grammar used in the description. Personally, I think it’s time for gender-neutral pronouns. Here’s an interesting article on the subject: http://www.cnn.com/2009/LIVING/03/06/words.language.pc/

73 feezie 03.11.09 at 1:45 am

“I am wearingks zee tres chic chapeau en laine vert et bleu. I am vairy saicure in mon masculinity comme Michael Caine in _Miss Congenialite_. S’il vous voulez, observer ma dignite.”

74 Michelle S. 03.11.09 at 5:18 am

I loved your story, Redbone. I, too, had a dog that loved wearing clothes. She had a little pink cap for the horse shows that she was nuts about. She had to have a hat because she had dilute genes and her eyelids were pink. She also had a red sweatshirt she wore as a pup in the snow. When she was sick and had to wear diapers, it made the whole thing a bit more bearable that she didn’t mind her bloomers.

75 tricia 03.11.09 at 5:41 am

That’s not a “happy” Boston terrier face. Poor baby looks mortified!

76 Brenda 03.11.09 at 6:10 am

It is clear from the etsy link that Bean is a working dog. No less noble than a herder or a guard dog. Just working smarter, not harder.

77 Donna 03.11.09 at 1:11 pm

This at one time was a really cute site to visit. Now it is just plain boring and mostly stupid.

78 Theo 03.11.09 at 3:23 pm

Oh noes, we has teh stoopy.

79 Kelly 03.13.09 at 10:24 pm

I totally submitted these over a month ago and they never got posted!
