Monkey see, monkey do! I love that they demonstrate to their kids how to do this…just like all good moms!

4 CoffeeCup 03.13.09 at 2:05 am

Hilarious, and yet kind of gross because they’re using human hair…that can never be minty fresh.

5 Nana 03.13.09 at 2:05 am

Makes me wish I was a monkey. Maybe my dental bills wouldn’t be so high. Wait! I AM a monkey!!

6 Gail (the first one) 03.13.09 at 2:06 am

Good one, Helene!!!!

I imagine the dental floss manufacturers will be looking for one of the monkey mommies to be a spokesmodel!!!

7 CoffeeCup 03.13.09 at 2:06 am

I didn’t even read the text above the video, but if you look at the video box before playing…doesn’t that look like a rabbit or a chinchilla?

8 berthaservant 03.13.09 at 2:44 am

Can orang-utan mani-pedi’s be far behind?

9 foxy 03.13.09 at 2:52 am

Helene – that is brrrilliant (much rolling of ‘r’s)

10 Porsupresto 03.13.09 at 2:54 am

I floss twice a month.

11 Kar 03.13.09 at 3:27 am

A couple of observations:

1. Here I’ve been wasting money during a depression on minty fresh waxed floss.

2. My dentist is somewhere thinking: A monkey can do this, WHY CAN’T MY PATIENTS?

3. Stupid but obvious question, ** Where did they get the human hair? **

12 Dustin 03.13.09 at 3:30 am

How can anyone doubt the intelligence of monkeys? they are remarkably human like take this story a chimp at a zoo actually fashioned concrete discs and other projectiles to hurl at zoo visitors to get them to move away when he was tired of being gawked at

monkeys are doing better than me–they have prehensile tails. My treetop skills could stand improvement.

14 kibblenibble 03.13.09 at 4:05 am

People aren’t even motivated enough to floss knowing what will happen if they don’t…What’s motivating these clever monkehs? :-O And will whoever (whomever?) is giving them the human hair just give them some flosss already?

15 kibblenibble 03.13.09 at 4:06 am

Oooh, extra s in floss. Ssssibilant, baby!

16 Squez Mommy 03.13.09 at 4:25 am

As an animal lover AND a dental student, I approve of this video!!! <3 I sent it along to all my friends and dental colleagues. :)

17 Von Zeppelin 03.13.09 at 6:08 am

I’m wondering where the monkeys get all this human hair. Does someone give it to them? Do they just find it lying around? Or do they lie in wait for long-haired people to come by and leap onto their scalps and rip it out?

Also, I think dental hygienists need to teach that hold-the-floss-with-your-hind-foot technique.

18 Shannon 03.13.09 at 6:14 am

One word. Fascinating.

19 Hon Glad 03.13.09 at 6:47 am

I’ve never got on with flossing, I use inter-dental brushes.

20 yuna 03.13.09 at 7:09 am

I love this!!

21 DaytimeDeb 03.13.09 at 7:49 am

Ha… the 100th monkey effect is real! :-)

22 Isabela 03.13.09 at 1:06 pm

So it might be really difficult to distinguish the first humans and the monkeys!

23 kar 03.13.09 at 2:04 pm

In one of the related articles, they supposedly steal it off of tourists.

24 W 03.13.09 at 2:10 pm

Dude, this makes me want to floss every day

25 Estlin 03.13.09 at 2:13 pm

Well, aren’t you special, Hélène. Is your life so vastly improved now that you’ve come first in a thread? Does it now have meaning?

26 cjms 03.13.09 at 2:41 pm

Fiver???? Where’s Hazel? Where’s Bigwig?

27 Jimbeaux 03.13.09 at 3:14 pm

Adorableen, Helene! (Oh hey, that rhymed!)

28 chanpon 03.13.09 at 3:16 pm

Monkeys are clearly SMARTER than humans. This video proves it.

29 jen 03.13.09 at 3:30 pm

Stupid monkeys, showing me up. Maybe if I had been raised by a monkey, I’d be better at flossing.

30 Psilopathic 03.13.09 at 3:41 pm

Thanks for the link, Dustin. Very interesting article about the chimp (who sounds like he would have made a great alpha male if he were in the jungle.)

31 Paunchie 03.13.09 at 4:29 pm

“something to chew on” hardee har har.

Estin, you having a bad day or somethin?

32 Jen 03.13.09 at 5:10 pm

Does anyone else get the idea that if they continue to teach and pass on knowlege from monkey band to monkey band, they will eventually take over the world?

33 Paula57 03.13.09 at 5:26 pm

Is this flossing behavior something that was taught to the monkeys or did they take up the habit on their own? I’ve never seen this before!

34 Annie 03.13.09 at 5:46 pm

Estin are you a tad bit Jealous?
Helene(Lanie) Totally awesome picture too.

35 DaytimeDeb 03.13.09 at 5:47 pm

@Jen: Some people would say that this has already happened. :-)

36 Kristabelle 03.13.09 at 6:06 pm

That is just strange! I say we get together and send them those Reach Flossers, that way they only have to use one hand!!!!

37 Theresa 03.13.09 at 6:45 pm

Obligatory Peter Gabriel ref:
Watch the toofies get flossed!
MON-KEH!!

38 Theo 03.13.09 at 9:31 pm

Floss the monkey’s dessert, MONKEY

“In your teeth”

40 John E 03.13.09 at 11:44 pm

“OK kids, our next lesson will be how to peel and eat bananas with your feet. Then we’ll break for lunch, and afterwards I’ll teach you the proper way to fling your poo at tourists.”

41 michelle 03.14.09 at 2:23 am

This is NOT the first evidence of monkeys teaching their young to use tools. Researchers have seen it going on for years. Primates are also not the only animals known to do it. I mean, come on. *grumble*

Sorry, I mean OMG that is cute look at the leetle baby do it.

42 amaretto_bunny 03.14.09 at 5:50 am

Michelle –

I caught that too and thought it sounded off. I’m no scientist, but I could have sworn I have heard of other instances of primates teaching their young how to use tools.

And speaking of other animals teaching their young, does anyone remember the story about some dolphins that taught their young how to use sponges to protect their snouts while foraging? I thought it was pretty cool. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/ID/8121399/

43 Deb 03.14.09 at 7:20 am

Only 2 species are known for cavities Bears and Us. Why? Sugar. Nothing else has sugar plus teeth. Unless of course you’re a monkey in the big city. Then you might die at a young age from cavities which cause infections and abscesses if untreated. That’s cool that this sugar-filled environment is naturally selecting for floss.

44 Babydon 03.14.09 at 8:32 am

that cooooooooool

45 bev 03.14.09 at 3:13 pm

Maybe they just had some popcorn, in which case flossing is a basic, primal NEED!

46 Hélène 03.14.09 at 8:48 pm

Well, aren’t you special, Estlin, if that’s your real name. Is your life vastly improved now that you’ve insulted someone over the internet? Cause that takes great courage.

47 becca 03.15.09 at 5:30 pm

I wonder if it’s not for cleaning as much as a gum massage. They’re pretty good at it no matter what the reason! Macaques are awesome.

48 Paunchie 03.15.09 at 9:01 pm

I bet other animals would floss if they had the hands to do it. I wish we could train dogs to brush their teeth!

49 Aoife 03.16.09 at 5:23 pm

Ah, this is where my parents failed. They taught me to floss themselves rather than having a monkey teach me. If a monkey had taught me, I’d be a much better flosser today.

50 eris 03.29.09 at 8:49 pm

I think monkeys are brilliant, too. But wow, advanced hygiene skillz? Come on. They floss because there’s food stuck in there. Food!
