How long before we’re told of the serious concern about what would happen if this poor dear SWALLOWED that scrabble tile, including instructions on attempting the heimlich maneuver on a cockatiel? What are the bets?

Cockatiel’s are such funny little guys. Mine used to love to carry stuff around in her beak, she’d tweet shrilly to make sure everyone in the house noticed her prize, especially when she managed to pry the battery cover off the back of the remote control. Then she’d do her “I’m naughty and I know it” strut. Silly birdy. I love the mischief in their eyes.

Awww, what a cutie patootie. Makes me think of my own lil’ dirty birdie at home. Say, gotta question here for other bird owners. I’m going overseas for 3 weeks this spring, and it’ll be the longest I’ve been away from my little buddy in 18 years. He’s a green-cheeked conure, and my question is, do you think he’ll be alright? I’m having a bird sitter come and stay at the house, but I’m concerned he might think I abandoned him. I know birds are super emotional, and I’ve heard of them plucking their feathers and refusing to eat when they’re upset. Arrrggghhh!!! I’m a nevous wreck about leavin him.

PS, though, if someone is staying with him, I think that is the BEST arrangement. He doesn’t have to be moved out of his own place, which would be two stressors instead of just one.

Birds rule!!! My peach faced lovebird Paulie (yes soooo original, thank my nephew for that name lol) likes to carry his little silver bell around, quite comical, seeing him toddle around the carpet chucking the bell in a shoe, then digging it out lol. I wonder if he would play scrabble with me… hmm
When I first saw this bird, at first, I thought, how did my parakeet, Robert, get on CuteOverload, and then I realized it was a very handsome cockatiel, who is the same color as Robert. Just a bad case of mental confusion today. Seriously, this is one posh cockatiel who is probably the Scrabble champion of the bird world.
Statistically, the birdie is most likely holding an “e.”

Thanks Theresa for the words of assurance. I usually take the little tyke with me whenever I go on a trip, but not being able to this time makes me feel guilty and perhaps overly concerned.
If this were my cockatiel his next move would be to wander over to the edge of the bed and throw the letter on the floor, wait for me to pick it up and then he’d throw it back again.
It’s like reverse fetch and apparently never get boring…

Womanofbird: In 20 years, I almost never traveled, because I was afraid to leave my conure with anyone else. Eventually, I took a week-long vacation. I kept him at home, and had two different sitters looking in on him daily. When I came home, he was a little extra clingy for about a day, but other than that, he was fine. I called the sitters every day, and they would describe his exploits to me, which comforted me. I’ll have to admit, though, I had nightmares during that vacation about being so far away from him. I think you just have to find the best care you can , and go for it. Good luck.
Womanofbird: I used to pack up all my boidies, their cages and accoutrements, and haul them in the minivan (purchased just for that purpose) to hang out with my friends who also had a birdpack. My Amazon parrot was furious with me when I returned. Finally, I learned that if I left them at home and had caretakers come to THEM, all was well with the babies when I returned. Petsitter/housesitter is absolutely the way to go. The bigger the bird, the more sensitive about stuff like this. My little cockatiels are happy all the time — you can tell by their perpetual impish smiles.

an organization in your area called Pets and Plants? I found them in the phone book here, and they go out of their way to
do things as you need. They
come to see you a few days before you leave on vacation and they take notes for a file for your
pet–all the instructions you need to give, all the directions for food (medicine, if any), necessary phone numbers. I hope you will feel reassured about your conure. And, yes, they do take care of house plants.

Wow… flashbacks. When I was a kid, I’d play boardgames at a friend’s house. She had a cockatiel that looked just like this and whenever I lost a game, the bird would laugh.
