Unfortunately, a horrible propane accident claimed the life of Martha Stewart’s baby Chow Chow "Genghis Khan" and other pups yesterday. More details are here at Martha’s blog.
Here is a muzzlepowshe and paw tribute follows. Mr. Khan at 9 weeks:
Rare purple tongue sighting:
Prosh paws:
General bear-like demeanor:
Poor thing!

*sniffle* Barooo!
It really is tragic, poor pups. I was so saddened to read this last night.
Awww. Poor babeh.
So incredibly sorry for such a devastating loss.
Losing a pet is one of the most awful things to go through. My heart goes out to Martha and the others.
I just cried reading through all the news reports
How old was little Genghis? I’m surprised she hadn’t taken him home yet, hasn’t it been a while since she first picked him out?
I’m not particularly fond/interested in Martha, but my heart really goes out to her and all the other dog owners who have lost their dogs or have dogs undergoing painful burn treatments along with the poor propane driver. I can barely imagine what they are going through. Burns are the worst things to go through, so I hope their pain is as minimal as can be.
Aww, that’s awful. So sad for Martha (and the other doggie owners). I know she was still sad about losing her doggie last year. How sad to lose a puppy, too, and in such a nasty way. Poor Genghis.
still utter sadness. a lifetime of snorgles cut tragically short.
Oh my goodness, that is AWFUL!
Poor Martha, and poor puppies.
I think Martha was ok…an hour later she was making a Chinese lunch (check her Twitter).
But poor lil Genghis.
Poor little guys
Poor dogs. How incredibly awful. I cannot imagine either how the breeders feel. I would be devastated.
I can only hope that he is in the arms of the angels, their noses buried in the soft furs & he’s being spoiled rotten being cuddles…
(sigh)
My heart aches for the poor baby & the others.
What do you say? It’s so tragic all around. This poor baby and all those poor babies. I’m so sad for this.
Yeah, noonie, the grieving shouldn’t eat or give in to any bodily demands, lest they be judged.
Much love and sorrow for all concerned.
Poor little guy! So tragic.
Prayers also for the propane truck driver, who in the middle of fire, took time to rescue one of the puppies instead of just saving himself. The man ended up being CareFlighted to a hospital, so you know he is badly injured. I can tell you from first-hand experience, skin grafts are the most painful thing imaginable. This poor guy is going to suffer a lot for his kindness. There should be more of him in this world.
Just too sad for everyone and every little creature. RIP, little pups.
What a sweetie =[ poor thing
My mother lived 2 weeks after she was burned over 60% of her body, I wish she hadn’t lived that long, 45 years ago burn tretment wasn’t that good.
Prayers for the brave Propane driver.
May God keep you, little guy. And good thoughts and blessings to Martha and all who loved these dogs.
BAROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooo!
All dogs go to Heaven. Fact.
Is there any more news on the truck driver? From what I read, the man was a capital-H, capital-E, capital-R, capital-O.
In any case, *hugs* to all.
So sad for Martha and Karen and all the dear little pups.
When I was at the Circus Cats show last weekend, the lady ringmaster recommended everyone teach their cats to go into their carriers (she uses a whistle)….which is an awesome idea if for no other reason just to reduce my stress at having to capture!
Oh and I forgot the delivery man—I hope he has a quick recovery.
What rotten luck. This would be equally sad no matter whose puppy died. I wish all those burned the quickest, most comfortable recovery possible. Or at least, least UNcomfortable possible.
An interesting bit from the news report: The newly formed Carbon County Animal Rescue Team or CART scrambled to treat the severely burned dogs. This was their first rescue mission.
Looks like they set it up just in time! I’m glad they were able to help, and extra glad that there are people in our communities ready and willing to do these things.
So sad, for all the poor dogs. Such a short sweet life the little guy had.
Im not sad for martha. Actually i know she has all the money to get another puppy and she didnt think too much about it. Im really sad for the puppy, and that puppy could have been saved if SHE TOOK IT TO HER HOUSE. Ive had rescued puppies and bottled them and never happened nothing bad, they all became healthy pups.
Ive been working too long in an animal shelter and i think she should give an example and adopt one instead of buying it.
Hope those puppies are fetching balls and happy in doggie heaven.
This is beyond heartbreaking. I hope that those who survived heal soon and without too much pain. Blessings to everyone involved.
Look at those spectacular little chubby clawsies! Poor doggies, poor Genghis Khan.
kitty kat, knock it off. This is not the place to be snarky and judgmental. Maybe Martha boarded the dog at the breeders so that it could be around other people and dogs rather than being left to molder alone at her house while she’s out all day. You know. Working.
as I mentioned in the previous post about this, i’m still confused, didn’t martha pick the puppy like months ago and wouldn’t it have already been transferred from the breeder to martha’s place by now? oh that’s so sad.
I’m with Lillith- can we offer a heartfelt chorus of BAROOOOO! for this poor little guy? And Martha, too.
@ XEN: I didn’t know about the rescuer, I hope he recovers. What a good and decent man to think of little puppies in a terrifying crisis like that!
He was absolutely adorable! May he rest in peace in puppy heaven.
Unbearably beautiful, these
pictures. Unbearably sad, the loss of any pet.
Rest in Peace little puppies. We have to return a very special gift.
And any news about the little burn survivors means
a lot.
Hall of Fame paw action.
RIP, puppeh.
Barooooo!!
We mourn the loss and extend our wishes to the man who helped save some of the pets. Keep you pets close tonight peeps!! Tell them you love them!
KKKKKHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNN!!!!!
Awww i was really sad wen the first pic was posted and now theres all this! Poor puppehs, miss u lil babies =(
Yes, it’s sad the puppies died but there’s a guy with mostly likely 3rd degree burns as a result of this horrible accident. My prayers are with the propane guy. My heart goes out to him during his long recovery and I applaud his bravery in trying to save at least one of the dogs. That poor guy.
I am lost for words. *sobs*
This story brings tears to anyone who has a heart. God save the driver, who took time to rescue a pup in spite of his terrible injuries. And may all those doggies recover quickly, or pass away without pain.
For those wondering, the explosion and fire was in the boarding facility, and not specifically at the breeder’s place.
Unfortunately, I’m stuck as to trying to find some way to combine KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN with BAROOOOOOOOOOoooooo in the same comment.
eternalcanadian–The article said the breeder also cares for other people’s dogs while they are on vacation. Perhaps Martha had left him there while on a business trip?
Too sad. Can’t imagine. [sob]
Could you guys stop posting the Khan stuff, it’s breaking my heart. I look to you guys for uplifting happy stuff. Dead puppies are certainly not cute.
Poor little teddy bear. ;_;
He is so cute. Sorry for the loss of you dogs. I started to cry when I read the story and then saw the pictures of those cute dogs. I am really saddened by your loss…..
actually, he looks very much like a ‘old soul’ in this picture. he’ll be back.
:::crying for all the victims – canine and human:::
Martha posted on her twitter page that she was waiting for a good time to introduce him to the home.
This is what I thought happened. She’s been traveling a great deal for her book and wanted to be home more before having Khan live with her permanently. Just a horrid freak accident.
BTW, the last photo the bear-like one is actually a little girl chow that came to Martha’s home to visit along with Genghis. (I’m a big geek when it comes to Martha’s pets.)
there is no god
Well, yeah, there is. God is what gives you the resolve to go on after a dreadful thing like this.
There was extra traffic over the Rainbow Bridge with this one. Poor puppies! Hugs to the puppy owners, including Miss Martha. Prayers and best wishes to the driver and others injured in this horrible accident.
*retreats to hug dog and sob quietly*
Have been in that terrible position several times through the years, and you never get used to it.
Poor babies. Thank God and the propane trucker, and the ones who did survive. Let’s send prayers and all the best his way, too. In the midst of tragedy there are still some wonderful people out there putting themselves on the line. Don’t forget them.
OMG!!! This is whut i want to have really happened in the accident: the dogs all run away safe and unharmed and they make their way back to their owners in no time!!! AND NO BURNS ‘CAUSE GOD KEPT THEM ALL SAFE! AND YES, GOD IS REAL, SO BELIEVE IT!!!
My heart goes out to Martha, the breeder, and all that were affected by this. The driver is indeed a hero. Let’s hope those beautiful animals died quickly and did not suffer. Others may not agree, but I think all God’s creatures have souls. I hope they are playing and enjoying the other side of the Rainbow bridge.
@ sad but true: i’m with you on that one.
I can hardly bear to think about this — I first read about this last night, and it haunts me. My thoughts and prayers are with all the dogs and their owners, and especially the brave truck driver. Thank you for letting us see that there are still good people and heroes out there.
i dislike martha stewart but love the dog! its sooooooo cute it is so sad that that terrible inncident happend
Now, now, what did we say about saying nothing at all, hmmm? Ms. Stewart reads this, so be nice, we are Peeps afterall. Sweet and made of spu sugar and oh, so delightfully sticky. Not tacky.
The news made me cry and I feel absolutely heartsick.
I am so very sorry for the dogs and puppies (I was so happy when Martha adopted Khan!!), and I’m sorry for Martha, the breeder, the surviving dogs, and the poor truck driver. What a terrible, heartbreaking event.
@Zoe: this post isn’t about lifting YOUR spirits, it is about supporting those who are going through this horrific event. we all know this isn’t “cute” but I am glad it was posted- in honor of sweet Khan and the other puppies. My heart goes out to the HERO propane man and all the others involved. Poor babies…
So sad…poor puppies! I hope the driver is making a quick recovery. Good man.
Zoe, at the risk of sounding bitchy or disrespectful, I say to you- too bad. I’m with Mags. We know this isn’t cute. No one said it was cute. Well, obviously the puppy is cute, but you get my point.
Yes, this site is called Cute Overload, but there is much more to it. They bring attention to animals that are being rescued, animals that need help, or in this case, an outlet to offer support.
I hadn’t heard of this, but now I know. I’d be willing to bed there are at least a few others in the same boat. You never know, this very post may help get some donations to help that poor lady and her puppies.
Hell, I’d donate to help the driver! What a wonderful man!
My prayers go out to all affected by this.
呵呵 我很喜欢松师呢,傻傻的,太可爱了。走路慢悠悠的,还会滴口水,太可爱了啊啊啊!!!!!
