Quote of the day

"These are pictures of the cat that we found in our garden.

He was only two weeks old and his tail was bitten off.

We called (him) Apollo."

It is not fair to slay someone with the cuteness this early in the day! How will I get anything accomplished the rest of the day???

    TOOOOO adorable!!

  9. Anne Boleyn says:

I am on my way to my garden to see if there’s one of these there for me. I had no idea they came from gardens!

  10. Kit says:

Someone nom’ed his tail clear off! He IS cute, but it wasn’t me! I would have only nibbled on this ears… just a little.

  11. Jorden says:

  13. Chronic Sender-Inner says:

I’m so worried for B-Servant! He’ll have a coniption fit when he gets here. Someone – quick stop him!

I agree on getting him a Starbuck and maybe even a Papadama and Mamadama Roslin to go with him!

  14. Darsa says:

Ohhh, sweet orangey baybeeee!! I want, tail or no tail!

  15. brooklynjoe says:

Awwww what a cutey! Shame about his nom’ed tail, but…whats with the knitting needle and yarn in the first pic? I hope you’re not planning to knit him a substitute tail? At least use yarn that matches his marmalade color!

  16. Kar says:

Poor baby. I just want to kiss that little face and make it all better.

Sounds like Becky’s doing just that.

  17. Don’t forget the “Cute or Sad?” categorization.

  18. Lesley says:

I planted some kittens in the fall, but mine haven’t sprouted yet :(

  19. The Button says:

i love the wrinkly eyebrow whiskers in the xtreme close-up! and his nose is totally boop-able.

    Also…hovertxt plz!

  20. debg says:

@brooklynjoe, I think it’s a cat toy (or it’s become one from what someone hoped would be a knitting project. This happens to a lot of my projects.)

  21. Sonya says:

AW. That poor little thing. Yay for a happy ending!

  22. metsakins says:

I would think that the knitting needle and yarn is a cat toy, it certainly is in my house.

Is marmitude a word, cause if it is, this kitty has it.

    thanks for saving him becky~!

  23. Cambridge Rat Mom says:

Love a happy, if “short”, ending…

  24. oliverc says:

What a cutie pie! He reminds me of my Erik.

  25. snoopysnake says:

    Eat him up – yum!

  26. Amy says:

Ok, I am totally in love – so cute I could almost fall down! I am glad he has a happy life now!

  27. Berg says:

Poor little Apollo had a rough start in life, but it looks like he’s got it good now. Well done, Becky R.!

  28. pscaley says:

Lesley made me spit my tea. (…and wish I had more time for gardening)

  29. Von Zeppelin says:

If the yarn and knitting needle are supposed to be a prosthetic tail, it needs a little work.

  30. Brie says:

These photos should come with a warning.
    Extreme cuteness ahead.

  31. Eastie says:

What a sweet little baby! Thanks for rescuing him, Becky R.

I had a kitty named Apollo. I miss him.

  32. thefluffies says:

    Cute!

  33. Theo says:

Becky R — just wondering… you’re absolutely certain the tail was “bitten off”? Cats are sometimes just born without them. Little River here has only ever had his tiny rabbit puff tail:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/7296895@N08/3299811707/
(he’s also polydactyl, along with his brother Simon)
(yes, originally they were thought to be brother and *sister*)

  34. Poohbear says:

Very well. Very well indeed. *sniffle* Guess I’m just teary today.

  35. zeldapie says:

    Hooray for Becky R.!!

    Apollo, you are beeeyoootiful!!

  36. scooterpants says:

what kind of fertilizer did you use?

  37. Zak says:

Are you sure his tail was bitten off? He could just be a manx. They are often born with little or no tail. My family had two beautiful manx kittens when I was young (and we found both on the street!).

    Regardless, what a sweet cat!

  38. Melinda says:

He’s so adorable! It breaks my heart that something nommed his tail off. Poor little bean. I wants to cuddle him.

  39. Mel says:

OMG, look at that little belly! It looks like Apollo is now llving the good life. I’d better actually start a garden if I want to be able to pick fresh kitties by August.

  40. kodalai says:

He’s joined the cool club of tail-less kitties, if you ask me. Living the high life! (But yes, still sort of belongs to Cute or Sad.)

  41. Theo says:

    [Hovers added - Ed.]

  42. Ruth says:

Donchya just love it when a marmelade lands in the jam?

  43. kk3 says:

Ok…I was thinking that he could just be a manx (they come in alllll colors). Was there a wound on his tail? Was is just a furry nubb’n? If there wasn’t an apparent wound…I bet he is just a Manx! They are soooo cute. (Well, he is cute no matter what). Yes, I too am going to go check my garden. :)

  44. Jennie Mello says:

Just like Squirrel Nutkin, he was probably teasing Old Brown Owl….he is a very sweet baby, and I send him hugs.

  45. Hon Glad says:

    What a captivating face.

  46. KittyMarthaPoo says:

GORGEOUS. You should name him Mr. Marmalade, for obvious reasons :)

  47. Pip says:

    Princess Bride reference FTW!!!

Oh, and I SO want to keees his tum tum!

  48. Theresa says:

    Angel face.

  49. Theresa says:

@Theo, thanks for that link– nosing around there, I saw THIS:
    http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3500/3299811865_22a63914f3.jpg?v=0

    WOWZERS!
EVERYBODY should look at these two kittnz!!!

  50. brooklynlou says:

Sorry to rain on everyone’s cute parade but the cat may not have had his tail bitten off but may have been born without one. If thats the case get him to a vet to make sure either way. Many cats born without tails have spinal deformities and may not last that long. :-(

  51. Jano says:

My ex-roommate and I had a kitteh with no tail and his name is Apollo too! (I moved out, she kept him).

He was born with a bad tail — it was stuck down (deformed before birth). So we had it removed and now he’s a happier kitteh.

  52. kibblenibble says:

This kitteh has stolen my soul…can’t stop gazing into those eeyyyeessss…

  53. Jezebel says:

brooklynlou have you seen my hari-kari sword?

  54. Theresa says:

Many cats born without tails do just fine, like my friend Vino.
    http://picasaweb.google.com/badwilson/Vino#5016437260197901442

    Notice, also, his awesome orangeness.

  55. ThreeCatNight says:

    Little darling kitteh.
Thank you, Becky R., and other kind hearts who rescue these sweet innocents.

  56. BeckyMonster says:

    Sing-song:

    It’s show time
    At the Apollo…

Am I the only one who watched it???

  57. Desert says:

Aww, he’s so gorgeous! My sister coined the term ‘fur facial’ where you rub your face into a kitty’s belly. I could do with a fur facial from this little guy.

On a much sadder note, I saw this news article today (I live in Perth, Australia) and am absolutely sickened. Maybe if we can pass this along to more people there’ll be enough of an outcry that the sentence can be changed? http://www.news.com.au/perthnow/story/0,21598,25147921-2761,00.html

  58. Juno says:

“Fish Heads” AND “Princess Bride” references–whoa! What’s next–cats and dogs living together?

It can only be the magic of marmies. And Fridays.

  59. nads says:

Is this a ResQte? Apollo found his forever home, right? RIGHT???

  60. Theo says:

Theresa, you missed the big version…
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/7296895@N08/3299811865/sizes/l/

  61. Theo says:

    Juno — it’ll be anarchy!

  62. kibblenibble says:

Theresa, I looked at all of Vino’s pics…He’s beeyooteeful. I’m in love. Awesome orangeness indeed. :o )

  63. chanpon says:

I admit I would’ve nommed his tail. *guilty eyes* Bet you it was a cute, little fluffy tailio, so alluring with its gentle twitching.

He would’ve just sucked out my soul in return with his eyes, but that’s ok.

BTW, isn’t King of the Olympian gods Zeus?

  64. Colleen says:

Awww… What a darling (and lucky) little guy. A rough start, but it seems like he found his way to the right home. :)

  65. Jenn in IL says:

Von Zeppelin, I felt the same. I was all, “So someone bit his tail off…and you attached a string and a stick to him? Innovative.” :-)

That face is just ridiculous. I want a marmie in MY garden! NOW! *Runs out to check*

  66. cjms says:

Apparently all I can do with a B.A. in Classics is make snarky comments on blogs and forums, so, I do have to say that Apollo is not the king of the Olympians. Zeus is.

  67. Mary (the first) says:

I am not normally big on the marmies but this one is truly gorgeous. That face!!! So sweet.. and he’ll be fine without a tail. My kitteh has not had a tail for the last 17 yrs. or so and she does just fine and is adorable besides.
And can someone tell me if it’s SFW what FTW means?? Every once in awhile I see it (@Pip) and I don’t know what it is..

  68. AuntieMame says:

Am I missing something? Did Apollo (the god or the Cylon vanquisher) have his tail nommed off, too? I’m not a classicist, so I don’t know these things.

And chanpon and cjms, do YOU want to be the one to tell kitteh that he’s not the king? Good luck with that. ;)

  69. Theo says:

CJMS, Chanpon — teh oops. Corrected.

  70. Annie says:

Oh Dear!!! AS Apollo was the fairest(Most beautiful) of the Gods… So goes this little Marmie. My soul has been PWN’d.

  71. T.U.M. says:

Him was in the garden ’cause him though the punkins were him mama and papa.

  72. Pip says:

    @Mary – FTW = For the Win >’;’<

  73. Lucy's mommeh says:

I love the swirls on his furs-is that referred to as a swirl tabby?

  74. Theresa says:

@KibNib, my favorite is this one:
    http://picasaweb.google.com/badwilson/Vino#5098348862305129010
The kitten is surely father to the spoiled rotten Lord of the Universe. ;)

  75. David (the first one) says:

@AuntieMame – I don’t think there’s a connection between Apollo and having no tail, unless Becky R happens to be the college Classical Mythology professor whose name I can’t remember :)

I can still picture her telling us “It’s very strange, although Apollo is handsome, intelligent, and almost all powerful, he always had problem with women:

Exhibit A: Daphne – the river nymph rather turn herself into a tree than being caught by him.

Exhibit B: Cassandra – struck a deal with Apollo where she gets the gift of prophecy in exchange for love. She reneged on the bargain. Apollo amended the contract so that no one would believe her prophecies.

Exhibit C: Sybil – Apollo granted her eternal life, and said ‘sleep with me and I’ll give you eternal youth too’. She declined, and shrunk through the ages until her body could fit in a tiny jar.”

  76. wannadance says:

    so who knitted this kitty?

    good job!!

  77. kibblenibble says:

Theresa, that’s a great pic of Vino. It is obvy that he is VERY well loved by his humans. :o )

  78. Jen says:

Aww, he’s cute!! His tail was bitten off? Oh no poor little guy. So good your taking care of him. Give him lots o love. =)

  79. andrea says:

Lesley–You must furr tilize the garden with catnip…

    Andrea

  80. Tractatus Blorpico-Philosophicus says:

@David (tfo)–Apollo had probs w/men too (cf. Marsyas). This kitteh has “flayed” me w/his winsome pose!
[blushing at being noticed by the mighty Theresa in a previous post]

  81. eijakristiina says:

I have a garden. A pretty garden. The question is… well, you know what the question is. Whaaaaaaaah *crying* No marmalades to be found. :’(

  82. berthaservant says:

gaaaahhhhhhhhhh! anerable marmie resqte! anerable marmie resqte! HOW CAN YOU DO THIS TO ME MEG?

  83. KatieKat says:

I don’t think anyone needs to despair for the little guy… sometimes the mom, especially if it’s her first litter, accidentally chomps on a tail when she’s cutting the kittens’ umbilical cords during delivery. Her frequent leecking of the bebehs usually prevents any further probs.

Being owned by a rescued Marmie and recently indoctrinated into Battlestar, this post wins my day. Bravo Becky R.!!

  84. Lyndse says:

    I haded a tail…

    …but somebody eated it. :(

  85. Katy says:

Looooove the spread toesies in the first pic. =)

  86. sestina says:

I have a marmie named Apollo too! They are the best flavor of kitteh.

  87. snorglepup says:

    Did I miss something?
What is the “Quote of the Day”??

  88. Lee says:

    LOVE the sweet baby kitty!
    LOVE all the Battlestar geeks!
Really LOVE all the Classics Geeks!
    My favorite comments ever!
    …maybe…(fear of commitment)

  89. totalee puppy says:

Sweet dreams, little marmie. I’ll have sweet dreams, too…”fluffy, orange…honkshu…loaded with cute…honkshu…need
    kitteh…honkshu…I can haz WHAT?…honkshu…”

  90. Subhangi says:

    Marmalade & cream! Yum yum.

  91. Quizkid says:

Many years ago, we found a grown-up cat without a tail in our garden. (Well actually, it was the dump behind our house and she had just eviscerated a squirrel.) She didn’t seem to have an owner, so we named her Tailless and took her in. We felt sorry for her because her tail had been bitten off.

She was also pregnant. When the kittens came there were:

    One with a normal tail,
    One with a short tail,
One with a corkscrew tail, and
One with only a stub of a tail.

So that answered the question of what happened to Momcat’s tail. We kept the short-tailed orange kitten.

  92. Yoshi says:

    Those EYES. O_O

  93. Edward says:

Becky, I honestly don’t care if the cat was born with a tail or if he lost it later. I just want to say thank you for taking this beautiful bit of fluff into your life, willingly and without preconditions, and giving it love. May it bring you years of happiness. Thank you again.

  94. Sarah says:

I had an orange cat named Apollo too. I miss him a lot <3

  95. January says:

Hey little dude…you got lucky in that garden!

  96. wannadance says:

had no idea so many kitties named apollo!

i knew some named stelazine and thorazine. seemed a shame to waste such great names on _druuuuugs_…

what about the other gods/goddesses? any cats named dionysius? hera? medusa?
or persons from antiquity? like damocles? oedipus? phaedre?

or we could get into wagnerian operatic ….nah. never mind…

jasmine is jasmine because she was jasmine when i adopted her and i didn’t want to confuse her. how about other vine flowers? honeysuckle? trumpet?

    shut up, dancer.
    oh, okay.
(post-migraine, ‘thank god i am still alive’ euphoria…)

  97. robin says:

soooooo darling. i’m so happy someone found this little dear and gave him a home. yay!!!

  98. Teresa says:

AWW, what a cutie :-) I am so glad you rescued him, Meg :-)

  99. RedZ says:

Check your gardens regularly. I have, so far, found two itty bitty kitties growing in mine (in ten years). Alas, the hubby & stepdaughter are highly allergic. But once a kitty decides to live in my yard, I feel responsible. Both have loving forever homes now.

  100. Teresa says:

I watched an episode about a kitty like that on either “Animal Cops” or “Heroes:Phoenix”. The poor kitty was thought to have been burned on her little ears and tail by some nutcase (polite word), but it turned out to be a problem with the blood flow to the ears and tail. The vet had to fix the tips of the ears and remove most of the tail, but the kitty was soon bouncing around and trying to nom on the vet (giggle). They showed her at a foster place playing with a Yorkie and said there was already a LONG waiting list to adopt the little sweetie.

  101. Beep Beep says:

That cat is not two weeks old. Try two months.

[They said he was 2 weeks old when they FOUND him, not when they took the photos. Please at least read before getting snotty. - Ed.]

  102. Sarah says:

Isn’t it possible that the cat is a manx? Neither of my cats have tails (manxies) and I’m constantly having to defend myself that I did not cut them off.

  103. sofi and chloe x says:

    awww this is sooo cutee x x x x
