How long before we’re told of the serious concern about what would happen if this poor dear SWALLOWED that scrabble tile, including instructions on attempting the heimlich maneuver on a cockatiel? What are the bets?
The teddy bear in the corner is hiding in humiliation after the bird demolished him in the game. Yes, some birds can be trained to talk, but who knew they could pull off triple word scores on “syzygy”?
seriously, i can always cheat @ scrabble based on the patterns of beak marks and chewed off corners from my parrot… we cannot play scrabble until after her bedtime.
Cockatiel’s are such funny little guys. Mine used to love to carry stuff around in her beak, she’d tweet shrilly to make sure everyone in the house noticed her prize, especially when she managed to pry the battery cover off the back of the remote control. Then she’d do her “I’m naughty and I know it” strut. Silly birdy. I love the mischief in their eyes.
Awww, what a cutie patootie. Makes me think of my own lil’dirty birdie at home. Say, gotta question here for other bird owners. I’m going overseas for 3 weeks this spring, and it’ll be the longest I’ve been away from my little buddy in 18 years. He’s a green-cheeked conure, and my question is, do you think he’ll be alright? I’m having a bird sitter come and stay at the house, but I’m concerned he might think I abandoned him. I know birds are super emotional, and I’ve heard of them plucking their feathers and refusing to eat when they’re upset. Arrrggghhh!!! I’m a nevous wreck about leavin him.
PS, though, if someone is staying with him, I think that is the BEST arrangement. He doesn’t have to be moved out of his own place, which would be two stressors instead of just one.
Birds rule!!! My peach faced lovebird Paulie (yes soooo original, thank my nephew for that name lol) likes to carry his little silver bell around, quite comical, seeing him toddle around the carpet chucking the bell in a shoe, then digging it out lol. I wonder if he would play scrabble with me… hmm
When I first saw this bird, at first, I thought, how did my parakeet, Robert, get on CuteOverload, and then I realized it was a very handsome cockatiel, who is the same color as Robert. Just a bad case of mental confusion today. Seriously, this is one posh cockatiel who is probably the Scrabble champion of the bird world.
Thanks Theresa for the words of assurance. I usually take the little tyke with me whenever I go on a trip, but not being able to this time makes me feel guilty and perhaps overly concerned.
If this were my cockatiel his next move would be to wander over to the edge of the bed and throw the letter on the floor, wait for me to pick it up and then he’d throw it back again.
It’s like reverse fetch and apparently never get boring…
This photo here is of my cute Elissa. If I remember correctly, she’s holding a blank. Ms. Teddy Bear was on my team, and I think Elissa was a double agent. Or triple agent. Or quadruple.
Womanofbird: In 20 years, I almost never traveled, because I was afraid to leave my conure with anyone else. Eventually, I took a week-long vacation. I kept him at home, and had two different sitters looking in on him daily. When I came home, he was a little extra clingy for about a day, but other than that, he was fine. I called the sitters every day, and they would describe his exploits to me, which comforted me. I’ll have to admit, though, I had nightmares during that vacation about being so far away from him. I think you just have to find the best care you can , and go for it. Good luck.
Womanofbird: I used to pack up all my boidies, their cages and accoutrements, and haul them in the minivan (purchased just for that purpose) to hang out with my friends who also had a birdpack. My Amazon parrot was furious with me when I returned. Finally, I learned that if I left them at home and had caretakers come to THEM, all was well with the babies when I returned. Petsitter/housesitter is absolutely the way to go. The bigger the bird, the more sensitive about stuff like this. My little cockatiels are happy all the time — you can tell by their perpetual impish smiles.
Womanofbird…Do you have
an organization in your area called Pets and Plants? I found them in the phone book here, and they go out of their way to
do things as you need. They
come to see you a few days before you leave on vacation and they take notes for a file for your
pet–all the instructions you need to give, all the directions for food (medicine, if any), necessary phone numbers. I hope you will feel reassured about your conure. And, yes, they do take care of house plants.
Wow… flashbacks. When I was a kid, I’d play boardgames at a friend’s house. She had a cockatiel that looked just like this and whenever I lost a game, the bird would laugh.
Nothing like being made fun of by a bird. I’m scarred .

Like da birdy’s mohawk.
And extreme use of blush.
BOK!!!!
I guess I could bleen here, but it feels like too much trouble after the Scrabble-beating I’ve just had at the feet of this bird.
quijibo!

I would never play scrabble with a bird. They lie AND cheat!
You always lose to a bird. Your heart, that is. I miss my Scoutie.
(
EXCELLENT! You just placed the wrong word LOSER! I triple score off you Ha hahahahaha. (evil maniacal bird laughter)
“I can’t lift the horse head, so I guess a scrabble message will have to do.”
We knew our love was true,
We knew our love was real,
But you were a cocakTOO,
And I was a cockaTIEL.

Naughty lil’lutino! Very nice looking bird
Yay for quijibo! Bart Simpson rules, like, totally.

Thank you so moiche, CO. A boid on Friday. I lurve you guys.
There’s something about tile games that birds like. My big bird plays dominos.

Um, DWZ is so not a word…
oh yeah? I call dictionary!
T.U.M., that’s sweet.
Love the boidies. Too bad they don’t really mix with kittehs.
Looks like Ed Grimley.
and two minutes later there was no tile – just a little pile of toothpicks!!!
Did I read 2010 calendar??? YEAH!
I’m looking right now at March 6th: Rule of Cuteness #8. If you can eat you furniture, you’re cute.

7-syllable ringer…
Syllable??!? Seriously??
@Womanofbird, my friend with a peach-faced lovebird always boards her when she goes away.

Shaz, don’t doubt it. Bird is a Scrabble ninja. Who can also FLY.
Hey, honey. This Scrabble set is missing the G’s.
..and the R’s.
What the heck, it missing some A’s, too.
Kids, have you been playing with this again? What do you mean, no? Who else would have taken them?
Apparently the teddy bear lost the scrabble death match (the only way to play).

Statistically, the birdie is most likely holding an “e.”
I’m glad that I’m not the only one who interpreted the teddy’s position as one of humiliation!

Womanofbird…Turns out it’s Pets-n-Plants online,
a member of PSI, Pet Sitters International. Hope information for your area is available online.
I agree Meg…truly calender worthy. Most D-E-F.
Is ok I lost a game of connect four to a cockatiel that looked just like this one.
…also lost a game of tic tac toe to a chicken, but that’s a different story…
It’s the first time of my life that I find a bird cute.
I like the two long feathers on its head.
