This Is Spinal Wrap

by Not That Mike The Other Mike on February 25, 2009

According to The Sun, albino hedgie Jay Jay wasn’t safe in the wild, because his color made him an easy target for predators. So some nice people took him in, and now his future’s as bright as he is.

It's like, how much more white could this be?

And the answer is: None. None more white.

8 DanBenZvi 02.25.09 at 8:27 am

With a rebel quill, she cried “Squee, Squee, Squee”…

9 forsakenbeast 02.25.09 at 8:29 am

Being white makes him a lot easier to dye blue ;) Now if I could just find some tiny running shoes for him…

10 photogirl 02.25.09 at 8:42 am

Hedgehogs now in Milk, Dark and White Chocolate!

11 Trisha 02.25.09 at 9:16 am

What insane predator goes, yummy, it has quills I must eat it? None! I refuse to think that anything could possibly eat that cute critter!!!

13 Caitlin 02.25.09 at 9:25 am

Beatrix Potter would be so proud!

14 nursemyra 02.25.09 at 9:55 am

I was expecting him to have pink eyes

15 paulajeanne 02.25.09 at 10:43 am

years ago, there was an albino rocker with long hair and the pink eyes. Wish I could remember his name. I want to say Winters for some reason. This little guy is adorable in his quilliness!

16 Dustin 02.25.09 at 10:56 am

yup he’s adorable but the albino = cute equation does not always add up. years ago we had a albino raccoon in my neighborhood, he was one scary mofo.

17 Robert M. 02.25.09 at 11:36 am

I’m not sure if this little guy is a true albino, due to the beady little black eyes as opposed to red or pink, but he certainly is nineteen different types of adorable.

18 snorglepup 02.25.09 at 12:40 pm

Edgar or Johnny Winter. Saw them in concert, back in the day…
Love the pink nose.

19 Hooly 02.25.09 at 12:58 pm

Edgar Winter…it’s the sideburns that makes him a ringer http://www.edgarwinter.com/gallery/display.php?ID=869

20 Cambridge Rat Mom 02.25.09 at 1:21 pm

He’s not actually albino, his eyes are dark suggesting that he is leucistic. This is simply another way of saying “reduced pigmentation”. This occurs all the time in nature. Go to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leucism for more info.

21 Katrina 02.25.09 at 1:36 pm

There just isn’t any way anyone can top “With a Rebel Quill” etc., thanks very much,DanBenZvi.

I also thought of “Spike” from the Buffy/Angel TV series.

Is anyone else going to the Philadelphia Flower Show this weekend?

Feeling pewey again, going back to bed, have a good day, Peeps!

22 AmyJ 02.25.09 at 1:40 pm

Juniper Jupiter, you beat me to it! Perhaps they’d look good posing in a model of Stonehenge?

23 biscuithead 02.25.09 at 2:01 pm

This lil’ pigmentally-challenged fella.
I bet he’s one of the bassists playing on “Big Bottoms”.

/talk about bum cakes.

24 bucky 02.25.09 at 2:16 pm

lol@ the Winter brothers comment

what a cute spiny lil snowball!!!

25 chanpon 02.25.09 at 2:27 pm

Oh god, those pictures of Edgar Winters will be burned into my memory for life. :(

He actually reminds me of Mark “Jacko” Jackson – that crazy dude who used to the do the Energizer commercials in the 80s. [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2RSu9Gw61U ]

Though much cuddlier of course.

26 temperance 02.25.09 at 2:38 pm

it’s such a fine line between stupid and clever…

27 Ltlray 02.25.09 at 2:44 pm

OMG – I bet those clawses are SHARP!!!

28 Theresa 02.25.09 at 2:54 pm

Nice day for a
WHITE HEDGIE!!!

[Hey little sister, who's your porcupine? - Ed.]

29 darkshines 02.25.09 at 2:55 pm

I actually saw a hedgehog wandering down the street last night, it was huge. At first I thought it was a massive rat, my friend thought it was a brick. Then we realised.

It was dark, ok?

30 260Oakley 02.25.09 at 2:55 pm

“We’ve got, like, hedgehogs in our trousers.”

31 wannadance 02.25.09 at 3:22 pm

looks like a lil’ hedgie burrito….nummy num num…ow!

32 emudoug 02.25.09 at 3:24 pm

I want to snorgle it, but I shouldn’t!

33 nora 02.25.09 at 3:29 pm

I too believe he is Leucistic. The New Orleans zoo has a Leucistic alligator, and he has blue eyes!

34 Cory Albrecht 02.25.09 at 3:30 pm

Is this hedgie really an albino, or just an amelanistic variant? ‘Cause hsi eyes don’t look pink/red, too.

35 Lesley 02.25.09 at 3:35 pm

I’m trying to figure out a way to work “Lick my love pump” into this but just can’t

36 shahinrani 02.25.09 at 3:57 pm

Tiny white claws of doom! It’s like, how much more white could they be? And the answer is none, none more white (or, indeed, doomy).

37 ~A 02.25.09 at 4:03 pm

Top pic: “One of these things is not like the other… “

38 OreoMonster 02.25.09 at 4:12 pm

Leucism, amelanism… so very educational!

And thanks for the earworms, all you Idolizers. %-)

39 Lerrinus 02.25.09 at 4:15 pm

Personally I tend to think of albinos as good luck charms, so this picture will make sure my family and I will have a great time celebrating my dad birthday today!

Love all the comments, there are so much better than anything I can come up with right now…I think I need another coffee!

40 shahinrani 02.25.09 at 4:30 pm

And I should probably read the alt text before I comment next time. *sigh*

41 Noelle 02.25.09 at 5:20 pm

Albino Hedgie = absolutly adorabuhls!!!

Edgar Winter = scary as h***

Lerrinus: Happy Birthday to your Dad!

Katrina: I’m planning on going to the Philly Flower Show this weekend. Hope you feel better soon.

42 scooterpants 02.25.09 at 5:37 pm

not so much white, as PINK!
“I’m trouble now, ya trouble now”…

43 temperance 02.25.09 at 5:49 pm

Lesley- the best i can think of is; ‘Lick my love-ly plump quills’.

oh, well.

44 Boomer's Babysitter 02.25.09 at 6:20 pm

I really want to find out more about keeping hedgehogs as pets. Before CO, I didn’t know anyone did. I don’t know if I want to – but I want to find out more. Where, please?

Noelle- I feel like I overdid and maybe a cold, or just overdid it a lot. I’m just resting and CO’ing today, I’ll be there. Have you gone before?

This will be my first time. Thanks for the kind thoughts. Back to bed I go.

51 Patricia 02.25.09 at 7:10 pm

So if This Is Spinnal Wrap… a hedgy spoof. Which on is St. Hubbins, Tufnel, and Smalls? Good thing there is only three, wouldn’t want to be their drummer :p

52 Noelle 02.25.09 at 7:20 pm

Katrina…reating and COing is the only way to treat a cold.

I’ve never been to the flower show before but my Mom has and she loved it. Too bad they don’t have little forest critters at the flower show, hmmm…maybe a suggestion for next year. Flowers and cute all in one!

53 Theresa 02.25.09 at 7:21 pm

Edgar Winter, scary? Eh. The fact that he has a TWIN??? YIKES.

A tiny Spiny Norman.

55 Noelle 02.25.09 at 8:26 pm

Theresa…Dang, now I’m gonna have nightmares! Must go back and stare at albino hedgie to get scary image out of my head.

56 Michael Claymore 02.25.09 at 10:27 pm

Yeah, he’s a cute little guy. More likely to be leucistic than albino though as his eyes are black- in an albino they are pink/red because the lack of pigment lets the veins show.

57 Michael Claymore 02.25.09 at 10:29 pm

Johnny Winter…the world’s whitest Blues man…good music.

58 ellie 02.25.09 at 10:41 pm

60 Sarah 02.26.09 at 2:06 am

I just realized the english hedgehogs look like the “Wombles” from that old TV show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKQpLA4QL-w

61 totalee puppy 02.26.09 at 2:23 am

Katrina…Hope you feel better soon. Rest and CO
recommended. How about some Yerba Mate tea from the health store? Also great are Traditional Medicinals Gypsy Cold Care (tea) and Cold Care P.M.(tea)-health
store. Hope herbal treatments will have you feeling ready for the flower show.

62 berthaservant 02.26.09 at 3:26 am

I was going to say “This one is called ‘Lick my Love Hedge.’”

But another one might make reference to the band’s greatest production number:

STONE-HEDGE
Where the demons dwell
Where the hedgies live
And they do live well.
STONE-HEDGE
Where a hog’s a hog,
And the behbehs sleep
In blanket logs….

63 jt 02.26.09 at 4:33 am

Wow, Billy Idol re-incarnated as a hedgie.

64 Delta Sierra 02.26.09 at 4:55 am

65 Subhangi 02.26.09 at 6:04 am

66 Theresa 02.26.09 at 3:06 pm

Hundreds of years before the dawn of history!!!

67 Theresa 02.26.09 at 3:08 pm

PS in the first pic, they do look like they’re wearing Snuggies. Pink ones.

68 Elle 02.26.09 at 6:02 pm

*Begins veterinary lecture*
Actually, this little guy is not albino, but hypermelanistic, meaning he is lacking coloring. If he were a true albino he would have red eyes, but because of the normal eye coloration we can see that he is simply hypermelanistic.
*Ends lecture*

69 January 02.26.09 at 9:35 pm

Why can’t we Americans have these cute guys wandering around our country…the British forgot to bring them.

70 Theo 02.27.09 at 9:18 pm

Elle —
hypOmelanism = less pigmentation; hypERmelanism = more pigmentation

(hyperalbinism: The goggles, they do nothing!!)

71 Katrina 02.27.09 at 11:19 pm

I let my boys see that movie when they were young- and then put it away until a couple of years ago or so, they laughed so hard at the jokes and at their ‘new understanding’ of the jokes. It was truly funny to watch.

We are constantly making Spinal Tap references-two boys – it is natural match with the movie!

72 MLO 02.28.09 at 1:28 am

Boomer’s Babysitter:
My husband bought a hedghog into our marriage from a previous relationship. When Otus (his name) died, we got Calvin…after a heartbreakingly short experience with another hedgehog in between.

Hedgehogs are adorable, but they do require work and their short life spans (in comparison to dogs or cats) is heartbreaking. After Calvin died we decided he would be our last. We couldn’t take another.

Heather In OR W/kittens:
Foxes will roll the hedgehogs into a river, lake or deep pool. The hedgehogs unroll in water and that’s when the fox strikes.
