I agree, it is animal abuse and total laziness on the owner’s part. Are they aware how difficult it is to get a cat to lose weight because of the potential complications of fatty liver disease?
Looks like a family cat we had that had a thyroid problem. She was this size despite being on a strict diet from kitten hood. Let the nuffing begin!

Kudos to the owners for trying to help him lose weight. Its a tough process and I wish them well. I’m working on it with one of my babies right now. How about showing some support for the people who are trying to fix the issue – much better loving support than cruel assumptions and angry judgements. (and even a chubby cat can be cute.) Some kittehs are just chubby, diet or no. At five months my Thomas turned into a little balloon overnight, vloof. No overfeeding involved, his sister eats almost as much and remains sleek and trim. He’s just a large, Ragamuffin type kitteh with extra snorgling surface. The thing is to make sure they get enough exercise.
Looks exactly like my father’s sweet Alex. He was a big boy but we eventually got him down to a svelte 17 lbs before the vet said that was enough. Unfortunately, part of the problem turned out to be a congenital heart issue – a small heart but boy, did he love XXXL.
Good luck with the dieting. I’m doing the same with mine & you’d think it was inhumane torture the way she carries on.
One TIP, I have an enrichment toy which is a cylinder with a small hole. I put dry in it and if she’s really that hungry, she has to work for it.

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit huffin’ kitteh.
Try putting Digweed on a low carb diet. When my kitty became diabetic he went on a no grain cat food. There are several good foods. He is on Innova Evo. He immediately lost weight and his sugar level became normal without insulin. Kitties should not have grain in their cat food. This is part of the reason for the epidemic of feline diabetes. If you want more information just Google a phrase like “feline diabetes grain in cat food.”
That’s a delicious looking cat loaf. I’d like him on my lap with a side of curled up hamster, paws up please.
My mom’s cat Belle is a round pudgy cat and she is not too happy with her new diet. She enjoys the extra play time but growls when she eats her Kitty Slimfast or whatever it’s called. I feel her pain.

I’m with you on that Kar! My kitty is currently quite trim, and his diet maintains his weight quite nicely. However, if it were up to him, he’d be twice his weight by now! And he wails and cries and begs as if I am starving him.
I’m rooting for Digweed and his diet plan!
That’s sad, you should be careful not to let your kitty get so big in the first place but it’s good your doing the right thing now.

Well maybe he likes to dig in the garden with his owner. WE had a kitty like that his name was tuffy he liked to get into any hole you were digging in the garden and dig too.

Two things came to mind when I saw this picture.

Aw, I have a cat like this. He would eat his food and push his “sister” out of the way to get hers also. I always thought it was cuz he was starving when we found him. I put the big guy on a diet, got him a big old cat tree to play in and took him outside on a leash for walks. He’s doing great now, but I still have to keep sissy’s food away from him.
Agree with SandiDQ. If the first incredient in your cat’s food is corn or any kind of grain, get another food. Even so-called Science foods that vets recommend have too much grain. The first ingredient should always be some kind of protein. Also, if you only feed your cat dry food, you increase the chance of obesity and urinary problems. It may seem counter-intuitive, but a little HEALTHY wet food or scraps of chicken will do wonders for “little” Digweed’s figure.

Digweed, I feel for you… I need to lose weight myself!
Our Henry tends to plump up, and one thing we found that helps is an automated feeder that dispenses a small amount of food three times a day. You can control the amount of food and the number of feedings; we found that three small feedings worked better for Henry than one large one.
The feeder is much stricter about the amount served than I was, and it also only gives Henry food at the scheduled times–no matter how pitifully hungry he looks.

I just want to say that this kitty’s full figure reminds me of my dear departed Katrina. I’ve had kitties all my life and I had Katrina from the time she was 6 weeks old. Although she was very active (more so than many skinny cats I’ve known!) and didn’t overeat, she became extremely overweight at about 1 year old. I gave my friend the highest quality food and care available, but Katrina died suddenly at 5 years old, weighing 22lbs. An autopsy revealed an enlarged heart – a genetic condition that should have kept her from living beyond 1 year. A fat cat isn’t always a sign of bad parenting.
I really hope that Digweed has a “kitty udder” when he loses the weight. Studies show that the appearance of cats is objectively improved by 64% when they have the udder-waddle thing.
Being a big girl myself, I can appreciate Digweeds roundness!

Actually, Digweed has a great life, despite his size. I babysat him once and he was all over the place – very playful and into everything. He can jump remarkably high, too. He’s a great, happy cat!

OMG I thought someone took a picture of my kitty Shelby and posted her on here – they could be twins with that sweet precious face. I wonder if it is an inherited trait of tiger tabby’s to be so overweight. Unfortunately, my sweet Shelby is 17 years old and lost all her weight and then some in the last year because she developed hyperthyroidism which is very common in older cats. She is on medication and still as sweet and loving as ever and her paunch is a reminder of how chubby she used to be. I couldn’t get over how much Digweed looks exactly how Shelby used to, their faces are still like twins…

And for those of you who are interested, there is a web site called catinfo.org that discusses what cats should and should not be eating. I’m about to change my cats’ diet. We’re being snookered, esp. by the dry cat food industry, even the so-called “Science” brands.

Good luck with the diet, kitty! My sadly departed and very much missed kitty was a ginger blimp when I adopted him from a relative. The vet put him on a diet, and although he lost about a third of his body weight, he was a nightmare to live with. He was incredibly grumpy and launched sneak attacks on me and my food. It’s hard to eat with a 15lb cat standing on your shoulder swiping at your fork.

I love this kitteh, he just needs to play more that’s all. (and he should probably be checked for thyroid disease, but his coat and eyes look real pretty so…) I would really like to see some more photos of this lil angel!

I have a hamster this size. She eats roughly half of what my other skinny hamster eats and is still roughly the size of a small manatee. Give Digweed a break– he’s just naturally big-boned! My daughter’s cat is a chunk too (not quite this big). We call him Tubby. Dunno how he got so large, he is on the same diet as his sister, and she is not chubby at all.
I put it down to his inactivity. When he was a teeny kitten (about a month old) his head got stepped on as he was charging across the room, and my husband stepped down. Hubby didn’t see him coming, and couldn’t feel Tubby under his foot (since it is a prosthetic).
Tubby had to have medication to prevent his brain from swelling and stay in the hospital for 2 days (no skull fractures). Since then he has been very cautious, doesn’t run anywhere, and doesn’t play much.
So, you never know what the story is, Tubby isn’t overfed, but is still overweight (and under the care of a vet who isn’t concerned about his weight at this time).
Digweed’s mom should take away his car keys to stop his midnight runs to the local burger joints. And take away his cell phone so no more pizza delivery.
Digweed, you are a hunka hunka burning puddy tat! I would love to rest my head on your purring side. Yitzy is headed in your direction and the treadmill videos gave hubby and me a very good idea. Now we just have to figure out how to get the Yitz running on said treadmill….

My little Skoona was getting rotund, and although it’s hard not to feed her at the end of the day when she begs me to, she has lost 2 lbs (1 more to go!) and her energy is off the charts! I can tell she feels better, and I imagine her little heart and joints working a lot better.

@Rachel – my boy is at a good weight for his age, but he, too, would just eat all day if I let him. He’s slightly less active now at thirteen (I stress “slightly”, you wouldn’t know he’s a middle-aged man), but still insists that he’s underfed, wailing every time I go to the kitchen (and heaven forbid I open a CAN because CANS contain TUNA. Even if they contain hearts of palm or corn). If I do give him extra, or if I overdo the treats, he puts on weight fast; it’s not worth it for me to risk his health.
(I’m glad Digweed’s owners are doing something for him! He’s a beautiful kitteh)

wannadance, I’m with you too! if you have to be PC, “his or her” is the only way to go (or the trans. “zis”, if your super progressive), but “their” is plural! i got in an argument with someone about this on a blog, and he said he was right because it said so in the dictionary (he was really condescending about it). when explained to him the difference between a “descriptive” and “prescriptive” definition and then quoted Strunk and White about how using “their” this way weakens ones prose, he ceased to respond.
in other news, you can do it, Digweed! Our Petra was over 16 lbs. last September. we were feeding her what seemed like minuscule amounts of dry food. the vet had us switch to we, lite food (half a can in the morning and half in the evening), and she is now just about down to 14 lbs. and counting. her energy level is way up and, best of all, she can clean her own butt!
Ahem. that’s “wet” food. And I realize the number of typos and inconsistent capitalization in my comment weaken considerably the strength my arguments about grammar…

My cat Harpo was quite big, he get up to about 20 pounds, and he was beautiful. He died peacefully when he was about 8. Rider was also quite large and had a bit of pudge, and he lived to 14 (and his weight did not contribute to his passing, he had cancer). But both of them were active, playful cats. Best of luck, Mr. Weed.
