It is weird. I don't like its hair...but I like the bathing idea.

Joy, thanks so much for the info. I have been thinking about getting a hedgie for a while now, but my life may be a bit too busy for a more high maintenance pet....I am glad I found that out NOW. I also was unaware that they were prone to certain diseases, though it makes sense, as certain diseases are common in certain species. But thanks so much for the knowledge! <3

Oh, and that was some serious adorable-ness and beadiness....

knibblenibble - hedgies are unique. Some hedgies have great personalities, others have no personalities but most don't show affection like a dog will. As for handling them, I use a towel or a hedgie blankie to pick them up and cuddle with me. Hedgies are contented to be wrapped up and suck the warmth out of you during cuddle time. They do make good lap pets - all they do is sleep. Another thing to keep in mind is that hedgies are poop machines - it's amazing how much poop they produce and it stinks to high heaven. You have to clean their cages every day and keep a generous supply of hedgie bags and blankies for them to snuggle up. A heating pad on low under their cages provide constant warmth. Hedgies does have a way of worming their way into your heart and you either love them or are indifferent to them. They are fairly high maintainence and best for people with patience and willingness to care for them daily. Expensive pets, hard to find and they do require an exotic vet or 2 who has experience with hedgehogs. After 8 hedgehogs over a 8 year period, I finally was worn down from the frequent, disabling illnesses hedgies are prone to and decided a dog was in order for my next pet. Hedgies do have a lot of health problems and that can be dispiriting. I love hedgies, problems and all. Maybe in a few years I'll try again with another hedgie.
