Mr. McMunkersons takes in Old Faithful

by Meg on February 6, 2009

"Ooooooooooooh!

Aaaaaaaaaaaah!"

[light bulb goes off] "with the right board, I could surf that thing…"

Pict2306

Meanwhile, Sender-Inner Margaret F. looks on:

Pict2310

Margaret F., I think he’ll join you on the bench if you ask nicely.

Aw, man, I was wanting a pic of Mr. McMunkersons pwning the Old Faithful waves–even if it was shopped.

2 Estlin 02.06.09 at 5:40 pm

Stay away, little chipmunk! Stay far away!

3 Cambridge_Rat_Mom 02.06.09 at 5:46 pm

He’s so one with Old Faithful that he won’t break his mood to avoid the human. Brave little chipmunk.

4 chanpon 02.06.09 at 5:48 pm

“Oh, I’m sittin’ by the dock
of the bay, wastin’ time..”

5 Von Zeppelin 02.06.09 at 5:52 pm

The temperature of Old Faithful can be as high as 265 degrees. Surfing it is a recipe for Planked Braised Chipmunk (perhaps accompanied by a Nuits St. Georges 1959).

6 Hon Glad 02.06.09 at 6:00 pm

McMunkerson likes to think big.

7 lori 02.06.09 at 6:16 pm

If Mr McMunkerson surfed that thing Macdonald’s would surely have to consider adding him to the menu…McMunk-nugets! Or Maybe he’s giving sender-inner-Margaret saftey tips since she seems to be paying more attention to him than the steaming jet of gas spewng forth from the earth.

8 CoffeeCup 02.06.09 at 6:21 pm

McMunkersons thinks he’s got the guts…but alas, he does not. In the second photo, he’s backed up from the curb. Methinks the springs got a little too dramatic for McMunkersons.

And I really like Margaret F.’s shoes. They look super comfy.

Also, even though Margaret F. doesn’t have a tail, isn’t dressed in brown, and McMunkersons isn’t dressed in grey…doesn’t this LOOK a little like matchingks? They’re practically crouching in the same position!

9 Prof. Bleen 02.06.09 at 6:22 pm

Hey, no fair showing summertime pics in late winter!

Once the water leaves Old Faithful, it will turn to steam if it’s above about 92 °C (198 °F), so he’ll take longer to braise than you might expect. You’ve seen the “High Altitude” directions on instant noodles, right?

10 wiven57 02.06.09 at 6:32 pm

Actually, that’s not technically a chipmunk but actually a golden-mantled ground squirrel, I think. (Sorry for being such a nerd!)

11 J.B. 02.06.09 at 6:46 pm

Cute. And Li’l McMunkerson even staying in the vicinity is a good sign…means the whole place isn’t quite ready to blow from beneath just yet. A very good sign when the critters aren’t yet running and hiding — but when the McMunkersons of Yellowstone McHunker en masse, THAT’s when you know to do your quick trot to the interstate. :)

12 kar 02.06.09 at 6:52 pm

honey bunny, don’t even THINK about it! That thing would make a fondue tidbit out of you.

You’re too cute to be flash-seared alive.

13 Theo 02.06.09 at 7:12 pm

Mmmm, fondue…

14 Trinky Dink 02.06.09 at 7:12 pm

I miss chipmonkuloids. There aren’t any in Florida. Only very scrawny squirrels that I am working diligently on fattening up.

15 Theo 02.06.09 at 7:17 pm

TD — you’ve got all kinds of little lizards, though.

16 Enormo 02.06.09 at 7:28 pm

CUTE!!!

The chippy is not so bad either.

17 Mandy 02.06.09 at 7:28 pm

I love chipmunks! There’s one at Mt St Helens that chills with the people. I’ve always wanted a pet chipmunk. My grandpa used to have a pet squirrel that would hang out with him in his wood shop outside.

In grad school in TX, we had a ton of chipmunks and squirrels. Don’t see either much around here. I KNEW there was something missing.
Adorable photo.

That is too sweet. Chipmunk is watching a natural wonder. Girl is watching another natural wonder. Deep. :)

25 trinky dink 02.06.09 at 8:58 pm

Yeah, the lizards are cute but there isn’t the same mammalian relationship building factor that you can have with the “furred or feathered”.

26 berthaservant 02.06.09 at 9:05 pm

That dude is super-teeny! Love his racing stripe! And yes, I call matchingks too!!!!

27 berthaservant 02.06.09 at 9:05 pm

And Tracy…we are watching them…..

28 eikoleigh 02.06.09 at 9:05 pm

adorable!

29 Paunchie 02.06.09 at 9:10 pm

can’t look at pictures of gysers without getting a headache from the imagined smell. Run away Chipperson!

30 Paunchie 02.06.09 at 9:11 pm

and hey! it’s Friday teho! how about some alternate reality??

31 nismo 02.06.09 at 9:13 pm

That’s adorable. Look at how fascinated she is with the chipmunk.

32 noonie 02.06.09 at 9:23 pm

When I grow up, I want to be a Sender-Inner.

34 Paunchie 02.06.09 at 9:27 pm

I missed that lobster pic! Please tell me he’s not eating a bowl of bisque! Crab bisque maybe, yeah there ya go.

35 Ginger 02.06.09 at 9:57 pm

I wanna be a sender-inner too, but my pets won’t cooperate when the camera comes out.

36 Matt 02.06.09 at 10:53 pm

I can’t decide which one of them is cuter: the chipmunk or Margaret F.

37 JD 02.06.09 at 11:03 pm

If you really want to see chipmunks, go to Seven Falls in Colorado some time. They are so used to humans, that they will almost eat peanuts out of your hand.

38 scooterpants 02.06.09 at 11:22 pm

ah! look how teenie weenie tiny he is! OMG SO cute! and being adored by a lovely young lady. and eating something obvie really yummie.
Looks like so much fun, I wish I was there too!

39 Katya 02.06.09 at 11:22 pm

He’s so cute! and he’d totally sit on the bench! If she brought some peanuts.

40 Katya 02.06.09 at 11:29 pm

41 Katya 02.06.09 at 11:29 pm

oops, sorry, computer fail.

42 Theresa 02.06.09 at 11:37 pm

Te-ho!
(50ws sitcom trombone sounds)

43 AuntieMame 02.07.09 at 12:55 am

Teho, that lobster needs to be holding titanium sporks. Remember these?

Sporks are for lugiers.

Naaaturee!

46 Richard F 02.07.09 at 2:24 am

Bluemenro,
Nope not photoshopped. Just a great photo. That is my daughter Elizabeth F., the twin of Margaret F., who took the second photo.

47 hamster-on-rye 02.07.09 at 4:08 am

Hi everyone–enjoying vacation! Fans here wear tees, sweat pants or cargo shorts
and comfortable shoes. Love it when they offer to share
a Nature Valley granola bar!
I may not leave here unless
you offer me a better contract.
Alvin

48 Broke Bettie 02.07.09 at 4:56 am

Yep, decidedly quite cute ;)

49 Frankie 02.07.09 at 5:11 am

I really look forward to CO
at the end of the day. It’s
my reward for getting work done…any amount of work.

50 Acecool 02.07.09 at 5:45 am

Wow, extremely cute.. The chipmunk is cute too I guess…

51 Jane Feuille 02.07.09 at 7:10 am

Congratulations to sender-inner Margaret F. a longtime fan of C.O., her twin Elizabeth F. and Mr. Chipmunk, all of whom knew how to time Old Faithful!

52 biscuithead 02.07.09 at 7:19 am

Why is it that when we click on the first pic, we get a cropped version where we can’t see the wee chipmunk?
The wee critter is cropped out of the frame!
I wanted a better view!
What a tease.

[It's not cropped. Scroll down. - Ed.]

53 platedlizard 02.07.09 at 9:40 am

That reminds me, nearly 15 years ago(!) on my trip to Yellowstone we ate at the Old Faithful Lodge (err, the new one, not the old one) and there was a SQUIRREL who would waltz in with the humans and beg from the tables. And everybody let him. Imagine that, a gray squirrel inside a restaurant! I wish I’d gotten a picture.

Not quite so cute, if you look in the hot springs you’ll see the bones of elk and bison who fell in during the winter, and boiled to death. Nature’s way, but still… *shivers*

54 Sami 02.07.09 at 11:48 am

The girl is cute to. She looks kinda like Diane Lane.

55 Dave 02.07.09 at 12:06 pm

I own a chipmunk by the way – they live about 10-12 years and are excellent pets!

56 Katrina 02.07.09 at 2:46 pm

Teho, dear, Sporks are for people who travel in skin-tight suits at extreme speeds head-first on super fast-ice tracks? Hmm, ok, if you say so.

57 gizmo 02.07.09 at 3:04 pm

Looks like McMunkerson packed up the tribe in the Wagon Queen Family Truckster (you think yo hate it now, just wait!) to head west to visit Wally World for a week’s vacation. Apparently, on his quest to find the World’s Largest Acorn (only a short 3 hour trip off the interstate), he got sidetracked and ended up here.

58 Max 02.07.09 at 3:04 pm

What happened to the navigation at the top of each post (to go to the next and previous post)? It’s impossible to navigate now. :(

59 SoCalSis 02.07.09 at 3:11 pm

Last time I was at Yellowstone it was on fire, burning all across the park. Okay it was in 1988, but pretty memorable at that.

Comment to pass on to the folks working on new format– when there are large numbers of comments, as in the yuk-fest a few days ago, I couldn’t find a way to go straight to the end to catch the latest gems without having to click Next Next Next etc etc etc. Makes it hard to keep up with the scintillating conversations and pudding fests.

60 Theo 02.07.09 at 3:19 pm

Katrina — no no, you’re thinking of skeleton sleds. Luge = feetfirst.
(On a giant spork, naturally.)

61 Poohbear 02.07.09 at 3:40 pm

@Biscuithead (that is, if you haven’t left in a huff) : when I click on the picture it’s cropped for me too, and you can’t scroll down, at least in Explorer. The only way I could get the whole picture was to zoom out.

62 Silent Meow With Claws Extended 02.07.09 at 5:39 pm

OMG! Could I pet the chipmunk? Please? Pllllleeeeeeaaasssseee?

63 Theo 02.07.09 at 6:06 pm

*** NOTE ***
I’ve restored the scrollbar which was missing from the full-size photo.

64 DJ 02.07.09 at 8:14 pm

I think that chipmunk just blew up Megaton.

65 Katrina 02.07.09 at 10:16 pm

Thanks Theo, I am not the most sports-enabled person in the world. People slide down things in the most uncomfortable-looking ways, don’t they?

Just between you and me (sh) my agency became a 501-c-3 this week! Oh, big whoopity, whooppie doooo! (sh)

Oh, all right- HEY EVERYBODY! We got our 501-c-3 this week! I feel like Pinocchio after that unpleasant incident with the whale! Or, maybe the Velevteen Rabbit? Or Corduroy? Tinkerbell? Yeah, that works! Woopie-doo! Have a snack bar on my behalf! Or pudding, pudding is nice!

66 biscuithead 02.07.09 at 11:32 pm

@Poohbear
Didn’t think I was alone in that.

@Teho! :)
Thanks for fixing the pic + enabling me to peer more closely at the wee ‘munk!

67 Alaa Abdelhaq 02.22.09 at 11:19 am
