THIS JUST IN: from Gobbler’s Knob

by Meg on February 2, 2009

Punxsutawney Phil, the wisest of all groundhogs, Prognosticator of all Prognosticators has proclaimed that his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers are World Champions AND that there will be six more weeks of winter, Bitches.

local groundhog who isn’t looking at his shadow by jjp178. Is it really called "Gobbler’s Knob"!? Too… many… joke… possibilities!

Thanks for the update, Phil!

2 fish eye no miko 02.02.09 at 8:15 pm

Hee… Rachel Maddow ref, cool. ^_^

3 Kelly 02.02.09 at 8:19 pm

Chuck, the Staten Island groundhog, did NOT see a shadow… I’d like Chuck to be right, please.

4 llism 02.02.09 at 8:22 pm

But he’s cute too.

5 The Button 02.02.09 at 8:27 pm

Look at the teef! The teef!!!

6 lindr 02.02.09 at 8:35 pm

Woo hoo! Only six more weeks of winter! Here in the frozen upper midwest it’s exciting if winter is on it’s way out by mid-March. Thanks Phil!

7 Penny 02.02.09 at 8:39 pm

General Beau Lee from Atlanta has predicted an early spring for the South! Hooray!

8 Becca 02.02.09 at 8:40 pm

It was Hedgehog Day first!!!! *stomps foot* Where are da hedgies?

Even though Phil is super cute..

9 Ruby Tuesday 02.02.09 at 8:41 pm

Dude, here in Cali, winter has been gone since New Years.

Tell Phil to head out this way. There’ll never be a question of winter out here!

10 Juno 02.02.09 at 8:44 pm

Well, at least it isn’t “Knob Gobbler’s.”

lindr, my neighbor: I hear that! The way I see it, six more weeks is GOOD news. If the groundhog claims winter is over, we know it’s just completely bogus. At least this way, there’s some hope.

11 Theo 02.02.09 at 8:48 pm

*snort*

Shame, that.

12 T.U.M. 02.02.09 at 8:52 pm

My Dad got to see Phil’s act in person once. He brought me back a T-shirt and everything.

JUNO!! Ya just had to, din’tcha!

Into the corner you go! :D

16 Estlin 02.02.09 at 9:29 pm

Wiarton Willie gave us Canucks the same bad news today.

17 scooterpants 02.02.09 at 9:38 pm

is this the REAL Phil?
cuz last time i saw Phil on the TV he was so FAT he couldnt even walk.(how could he MISS his shadow???)
so what?, did he do nutra-system or somethin?

18 Michelle 02.02.09 at 9:39 pm

The sun is actually shining in Buffalo today. I can handle six more weeks of winter. It’s when it’s still snowing in May that it drives me crazy.

19 Theresa 02.02.09 at 9:44 pm

We love Phil, but our little dude, Staten Island Chuck, is calling an early spring!

20 katiedid 02.02.09 at 9:45 pm

Why Phil why!?!?!?!
*Shakey fist!!*

21 Nicole 02.02.09 at 10:00 pm

The teeth are too cute. He looks like he’s up to some serious business.

22 Boomer's Babysitter 02.02.09 at 10:19 pm

Not sure what part of Cali you’re in, Ruby, but I needed the heater when I got up, but when I walked home for lunch, I was overdressed. Silly schizophrenic weather! Wonder what sort of a critter could predict Cali coastal weather…?? A ground squirrel? Pelican? Cat in a sunbeam?

23 Shannon 02.02.09 at 10:35 pm

The one in Atlanta predicted an early spring.

I feel more sorry for this poor critter every. Such a rude awakening.

And I REFUSE to let winter end until I get some of that snow everyone is getting. I demand it, I say!

24 Juno 02.02.09 at 10:36 pm

Well, SOMEBODY had to say it!

25 Brian 02.02.09 at 10:50 pm

Shubenacadie Sam, the resident Nova Scotian Marmota Monax Meteorologist, also predicts 6 more weeks.

Bitches.

26 Gail 02.02.09 at 11:28 pm

Woodstock (IL) Willie saw his shadow today!

Not that a prediction of 6 more weeks of winter around here is exactly going out on a limb….

27 Jennie Mello 02.02.09 at 11:43 pm

lol brian :)
cain’t touch this

28 Michelle S. 02.02.09 at 11:53 pm

heheheh you said Gobbler’s Knob.

29 vfxchick 02.02.09 at 11:58 pm

He’s positively regal!

30 Malinki 02.03.09 at 12:14 am

Phil’s only one really cool thing ’round there. Stop into Sykesville during deer season, get the pancake & sausage breakfast. Beautiful country.

Oh, and all you other rodent prognosticator-wannabes are shams. Phil knows more than Santa, but only shares a small portion of his vast weather knowledge with us mere mortals.

31 Kimberly 02.03.09 at 12:41 am

Not only is it called “Gobbler’s Knob,” but you can get MARRIED on Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney by the officials who preside over the groundhog, and your marriage certificate would have a little groundhog embossed on it.

I REALLY tried to talk my husband into this during our engagement, but no go. We live in PA so we’d only have to drive, but – no.

32 pilotgirl 02.03.09 at 1:14 am

I’m okay with six more weeks of winter as long as it’s six more weeks of the current winter weather. It’s in the 70’s and sunny in SoCal.

33 Theresa 02.03.09 at 1:23 am

Rub it in, why don’t you.:p

I went to Florida a couple of weeks ago, and it was the coldest week there in years. My first night there, it was the same temp in Ft. Lauderdale as it was in Bismarck, ND!!

34 berthaservant 02.03.09 at 1:47 am

It’s a tad nippy out on the campus of UCSB….the co-eds are wearing clothing that covers their shoulders, though many mid-driffs are still exposed. Still, signs point to an early summer, as the skaters have all switched from sweats to shorts.

35 Neko19 02.03.09 at 2:46 am

hi peeps i’m new heer

36 Theo 02.03.09 at 2:54 am

Hi, Neko; I sure as hell ain’t.

37 vegas vickie 02.03.09 at 3:45 am

for the Californians, if you don’t like the weather, wait for a few minutes it changes! or move to Las Vegas, no don’t do that we don’t have any jobs here either, but come to visit, rooms are cheap! and today is my mom’s birthday HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM!

38 Patito Gigante 02.03.09 at 4:11 am

Seriously?? Gobbler’s Knob is for reals???
There’s no emoticon for what that makes me feel. ICBTCIGK!!!

39 kibblenibble 02.03.09 at 4:16 am

In Cali, winter can mean rain, and we NEED rain. We’re havin’ a drought. So I hope Phil is right…

BTW, does he look just a bit disapproving?

40 chanpon 02.03.09 at 4:38 am

“Whither art thou, Spring?”

41 Helena 02.03.09 at 4:39 am

Not down here in the Southern hemisphere.
Oh, wait…this is California…nevermind!

42 Kar 02.03.09 at 4:58 am

Staten Island Chuck is a total bad a$$. Today is his big day of the year and what does he do?

Unrepentantly bites the hand feeding him. Chuck Norris would be proud.

43 Doxylover79 02.03.09 at 5:27 am

Why do they keep dragging that little guy out of his hole every year? (shakes head in dismay)

44 silligurl 02.03.09 at 5:33 am

Up your nose with a rubber hose, Phil. I’m tired of winter already!

45 squirt 02.03.09 at 6:06 am

Is there really a reason for foul language here peeps? I realize people can talk what ever way they wish but their are familes with small children that do look at this web page.

46 Karen 02.03.09 at 6:14 am

I was going to reply “in before complaining about profanity” but now I see I am too late.

47 Hon Glad 02.03.09 at 9:20 am

We don’t have any animal predictictors in the UK. But for the record I’M PISSED OFF WITH WINTER. Sorry for shouting.

48 darkshines 02.03.09 at 10:03 am

Its been snowing HARD CORE in the UK, snow flakes the size of tuppennies, its BRILLIANT!

49 Punxsy native 02.03.09 at 10:13 am

Punxsutawney is my hometown (although I don’t live there anymore). I’ve been to the main event more than once, and yes, Gobbler’s Knob is the location’s real name. It’s not in the middle of town like in the movie, though, and Phil doesn’t live there. He and his wife Phyllis live in the town library. Another fun fact: although Groundhog Day was not filmed in Punxsutawney, there was once a plywood groundhog “statue” in town just like the one that Bill Murray drives through.

50 Gail 02.03.09 at 12:28 pm

@Punxsy native: I live close to where the movie was filmed (Woodstock IL). Every year since then, the town has had G-Hog Day celebrations with events from the movie (like the bachelor auction, walking tours of the filming locations, etc.) and Woodstock Willie, who according to the newspaper, tried to escape yesterday before the festivities, LOL!

51 Susan 02.03.09 at 12:40 pm

@neko: Welcome! Are you named after the little cat that would follow a mouse pointer around? That must have been 10 years ago. Or the Jurassic Age in computer years! Neko was CUTE![google google google] Yes! I was right! 1998. And there are links that seem to say you can still download him. A true classic!

52 Minya 02.03.09 at 12:57 pm

Damn. It.

I’m am so ready to break up with winter.

53 ButtaRumCake 02.03.09 at 1:09 pm

Meh – the two groundhogs (one chocolate & one blonde) living under my mom’s shed told me just yesterday that spring will be here March 20, 2009 which is six weeks away anyway…

Phil, Willie, Chuck & the boys don’t impress me with their weather prognositcations, sorry.

(They’re indredibly cute, though LOL)

54 Darsa 02.03.09 at 1:21 pm

Stupid giant rat. I (and my several feet of snow in the front lawn) hope he’s wrong.

55 Simon 02.03.09 at 1:21 pm

Did he watch his shadow?

56 evangeline's sla...er...servant 02.03.09 at 3:22 pm

Well, OUR local groundhogly prognosticator saw his shadow too – but you know, if you know that there IS an end in sight, it’s much easier to take, non?

57 Rooanne 02.03.09 at 7:20 pm

Heeelp!! Now I can’t get that Groundhog Day tune out of my head.
To people in the UK: you really don’t have groundhog day? How do you forecast the weather? :(

58 Hon Glad 02.04.09 at 7:44 am

Rooanne. we use seaweed.
