I too thought it might be an affenpinscher – is that for sure or just a guess?

I have an affenpinscher cross and nobody ever knows the breed…

  19. berthaservant says:

Awesome…a little bit of Fizzgig, too, no? Like that mouf is gonna open real wide and growl atcha….

  20. Pamela says:

A friend just pointed out that the little dustball should be named “Tribble”.

    Tee hee..

    Makuro Kurosuke, with legs!

  24. Michelle S. says:

If that’s not a purebred Affenpinscher I’ll eat a dust bunny.

That reminds me. Where DO crosses of rare breeds come from? Yeah, yeah. I mean I know where they come from… I just mean whenever I encounter folks with mixed breed dogs, there seems to be an unusually high number of “Foxhound, Spinone, Norbottenspets, Puli, etc.” mixes. How does that happen? Or do people just guess at the mix?

  28. SummieG says:

I’ve heard the saying “so ugly it’s cute,” but I think this dog stops just short of that line. Not ugly enough to be cute, not cute enough to overcome the ugly. No thanks.

What an education. Never heard of Totoro until now. I don’t have kids, that may be why. The dog AND the dustball are kinda cute. Cute in a shocked sort of way.

  41. Rose says:

D’awwwww, soot sprites. I want a real-life one so bad. Especially with those little stars they eat in Spirited Away. I think I need to break out the Miyazaki box set now.
As for the pup? Meh. I’ve never really been one for teeny-tiny dogs anyway…

  42. Jennie Mello says:

This Zink likes to drink ink. He likes to drink pink ink, I think.

  43. Jezebel says:

    OMG.

  44. AuntieMame says:

Isn’t there an “eyes too big for your head” rule of cuteness? Or is that ears?

I’d go check, but every time I click the “Next” page link, it opens another &^%$#(* window. I’ll have 75 windows open before I find all the rules.

Someone please tell Typepad that their “improvements” aren’t improving anything.

  45. Theo says:

AuntieM, that new-window thing doesn’t happen for me. Maybe this is something you could take care of right in your browser settings; what are you using? (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari…?)

  46. Haley says:

AHHH! I love that movie! THE ORIGINAL VHS! Not any of that horrid new dvd :/ ewwww

But damn, that dog is the spitting image of a soot sprite! :D

  47. Melisma says:

Aww, cute puppy! And a Miyazaki reference – he’s one of my very favourite filmmakers!

(And berth, I have a Fizzgig. He came with my Kira collector’s-figurine-not-a-doll. Jen came with his panpipe thing. Yay Jim Henson!)

  48. Annie J says:

    How silly! How cute!

  49. Nik says:

@Theo, inquiring minds want to know. How did you fix your browser so you don’t get multiple new windows opening up? *Sits in the front row with a notepad and pen ready to take notes…*

    Thanks Yoda.

  50. eknirb says:

I cannot even believe this. I want this little person so bad I cannot even begin to tell you. FedEx his ‘tocks to me STAT!!!!!

  51. Frankie says:

    Who could turn away from
    those puppy eyes?

  52. Theo says:

Nik — it’s a different setting depending on which browser you use. I’ll take the liberty of assuming Internet Explorer 7 for the moment, since it’s the only one I’ve ever had this trouble with.

    1) From the “Tools” menu, choose “Internet Options”.

    2) Under the “General” tab, look for the “Tabs” section (toward the bottom) and click its Settings button.

    3) Make sure that the option box for “Enable Tabbed Browsing” is checked.

    4) Look for the heading “When a pop-up is encountered:” and click either of the options you prefer that ISN’T “Always open pop-ups in a new window”. Personally, I let Internet Explorer decide.

    5) The next section is “Open links from other programs in:” — select an option that ISN’T “A new window”. My personal preference is a new tab in the current window.

    6) Click OK, then click OK.

  53. pyano says:

I thought you might find it cute to know that (according to my Dad’s knowledge of japanese) makurokurosuke means literally “very black black thing”.

  54. Theo says:

Nik (and AuntieM) — I wrote up a long answer about how to set your Internet Explorer to work right, and not open new windows all the time… but then I tested it out, and all it did instead was open new TABS all the time.

The better work-around appears to be: Use Firefox.
    http://www.GetFirefox.com

(Honestly I don’t know how TypePad has coded their new pagination feature. However, I do know that they’re still working on it.)

  55. kibblenibble says:

Perfectly round black button eyes…what a sweetie!

  56. Nik says:

Theo, thanks! This is really helpful. (But then I wouldn’t have expected anything less from you!)

  57. Nik says:

@Eris, yes, that animated drawing is defintely unsettling…

  58. scooterpants says:

  61. Johanna says:

Soot alors! Zat is one cutie poochie!!! And for anyone into movie trivia, this is the same breed (Brussels Griffin) that was in “As Good as It Gets”. The one that doesn’t step on the cracks….

Only that one wore a different color soot. (Sorry, couldn’t help myself)

  62. pounce says:

It so does look like the soot sprite!! I have 2 on my fridge … the sprites, not the dogs. :)

    Also: WANT THESE!

  63. Marymomma says:

Awww my 2 year old loves Totoro, think he’d love the dust ball pup too.

  64. pogopuschel says:

The starshaped things that these fellers eat, are conpeito, a japanese sweet that originally came from Portugal. Basically you put sesame into a drum with sugar water and spin. The sugar cristalizes around the sesame and forms a star shape.
It also tastes reeeeeally delicious ^^ *must go to supermarket to buy conpeito*

Oh dear, I have a fierce urge to dognap and I don’t know if it can be contained. You’ve been warned owner of Dustball.

  67. AuntieMame says:

Well, I do use Firefox at home. But at work, the only choice we have is Exploder. I’ve tried to figure out how to stop the window thing, and it doesn’t work. Sorry. It was just one more thing on top of the other Typepad changes that I also am not crazy about.

But the lil black fuzzball with laigs is still cute.

  68. Smigoo says:

    to~to~ro

  69. Hon Glad says:

This dog, was originally bred for sending up chimneys to sweep them. (perhaps)

  70. eikoleigh says:

    kawaii!!!

  71. tigerpie says:

haha! I have one of those dust balls – it’s a magnet on my fridge! that wild-haired pup looks like something out of the Labyrinth, or the Dark Crystal :)

  72. Poohbear says:

    Hon Glad – hee !

Zis eez not a Brussels Griffon (says my sis who is owned by one). Eez indeed an Affenpinscher.

  73. starling says:

There is such a dog breed as an “affenpinscher”? You must be kiddink moi, a dog breed named after a monkey?

  74. meggy says:

I bought Totoro on DVD for my niece and nephew. Soot sprites are cool. But there is a scene in movie where Dad takes bath in rustic washtub with his adolescent daughter and his preadolescent daughter (meanwhile Mother is in hospital).

My niece asked to watch the bath scene over again and recorded it with her kiddie video camera (Flash? is that what they are called) Did anyone else see film and wonder about that scene? DVD container said Roger & Ebert gave two films up for great family movie, yet…?

  75. Poohbear says:

Starling : don’t you think there’s some Affen in that Pinscher, when you lOOk at eet ?

BTW, my sis KNOWS these things, she’s a CAT show judge ! *cross-eyed eye roll* :)

  76. Frankie says:

    puppy is prosh.

  77. starling says:

I dunno, Poohbear, maybe it got its name cos it keeps pinching monkeys?

This doggy reminds me of the little goggy in Garfield: “there are two things I hate about high grass: burrs and small dogs”. Then he proceeds to throw a bucket of water over the dog and says “See? Just as I thought, it’s nothing but fur and eyeballs”.

  78. Tee says:

I adore the pup and the site changes….Thanks CO

  79. Terra says:

If you do rent Totoro, make sure you don’t rent the dubbed version. Rent the one with subtitles. It’s cuter in Japanese!

  80. Maribeth says:

Maybe this pup just had a bath. That would explain both the fluff and the tragic expression.

  81. MegW says:

@meggie, that’s a simple cultural difference. Baths are frequently shared in Japanese culture and prior to puberty gender doesn’t really affect the situation.

    となりのトトロ、トトロ!トトロ、トトロ!

I agree, I find them even cuter in Spirited Away with the little sugary star things they eat.

  82. Meers says:

    warms my heart.

  83. Rooanne says:

Yay!! Totoro! I didn’t know you could purchase dust sprites. Want one, and a stuffed Totoro too.

  84. meggy says:

    thanks Meg W. for reassurance!

  85. SoCalSis says:

LOVE Totoro! My favorite is the amazing KittyBus with the cool headlight eyes and soft furry seats… so comfy and warm, like sitting on a kitty’s lap ‘stead of the other way round.

  86. SoCalSis says:

Yeah, and I also have lots (and lots) of windows opened after a CO session. Firefox causes probs with some other apps, plus use Explorer at work ANYWAY, so hope those Typepad folks figgur this out. I miss the Home button, and (btw) hate the Next/Previous buttons… but will slog on through sleet and snow and extra open windows to get to my Daily Cute. Uphill Both Ways!

[You can have both Firefox and IE on the same computer, y'know. No problem. That way you can still use IE when you have to (like, when the developers only bothered to build & test their site in a Windows environment; I've seen a lot of internal business apps made like that) - Ed.]

  87. CuTeLovEr says:

    LOL!

  88. Eris says:

are these Next and Previous buttons new? Are they a TypePad thing? I like them in theory, but usually I just wanna get to the end of the comments to see the new stuffs. Anybody know of a way to do that now? Usually I just scroooolllled down.

  89. Rivka says:

Who leaves the seeds for you to find?
Follow them and you will see a treasure there!

… Or maybe just one of these little soot balls ^_^

  90. January says:

I think this is one for the calendar. Pretty great cute, don’t ya think?

  91. momnerd says:

They are called Soot Sprites, or Soot Gremlins, according to the movie.

  92. fussball says:

    Gute Arbeit hier! Gute Inhalte.
