Vintage Supercat

by Meg on January 4, 2009

It’s 1981.

Supercat gets his first flying lesson.

Next stop: finding a hamster sidekick.

Supercat

Excellent Caturday vintage scannage, Mike and Carole C. Nice wooden owl on the wall, too.

The cat is cute. Being tossed in the air? I dunno. Kind of mean.

2 Boomer's Babysitter 01.04.09 at 1:10 am

I just wondered if Supercat, when caught (I certainly hope), inserted his/her superclaws in the catcher…

3 Jade 01.04.09 at 1:20 am

I think I’ve seen this kitteh before….

Nuffest in 3,2,1…

5 fish eye no miko 01.04.09 at 1:33 am

You’re already too late, Lilith. [points to ***********]

[...I believe you were about to point to the comment at the top of this thread, weren't you? - Ed.]

6 cachorro 01.04.09 at 1:39 am

This is a kitten.

7 Juniper Jupiter 01.04.09 at 1:45 am

OH MY GAHD!!

That is HYSTERICAL!! XD!

Don’t worry, gang, whoever tossed Supercat probably ended up with Zorro-slashed arms and wag of the finger from their mom for tossing him.

8 POSTY MCPOSTERTON 01.04.09 at 1:45 am

haha… considering the ways cameras were back then, I’m surprised whoever took that picture got such a good one.

9 Rachel of Cyberia 01.04.09 at 1:48 am

We had that owl. Not the Supercat, unfortunately.

10 Jezebel 01.04.09 at 2:04 am

Hello people! That kitteh is FLYING! Why else would he wear a cape?

11 Annie 01.04.09 at 2:46 am

LOL Streaky the super cat.

HAs it occured to the folks concerned for the kitten that said kitten perhaps just leapt from the curtain rod to the human and the picture taker got it on film.

12 emily 01.04.09 at 2:51 am

some kittens enjoy being thrown like that

13 browngrl 01.04.09 at 2:56 am

I just snorted my water up my nose laughing at this picture. Now I am coughing and waiting for the nuffing to begin!

14 metsakins 01.04.09 at 2:56 am

I’ll see your wooden owl and raise you a macrame one.

[Wouldn't that put us in the '70s, rather than the '80s? - Ed.]

15 em 01.04.09 at 3:02 am

I throw my cats onto the couch from halfway across the room all the time (it’s a small room.) They land with their tails all up and eager and run back to me to do it again. If the cat doesn’t like it, he’ll let those hands know..

16 Not That Mike The Other Mike 01.04.09 at 3:04 am

Wow, back in 1981 you could get a SuperCat for only $9, and that included a shampoo!

17 marmar 01.04.09 at 3:09 am

My guess is that the vintage wooden owl is actually genuine, authentic wood-grain simulating-plastic.

18 Faye 01.04.09 at 3:19 am

Can’t you tell the cat is trying to jump AWAY from the hideous popcorn ceiling.

19 Sarah 01.04.09 at 3:21 am

LOL!

20 Mumzie 01.04.09 at 3:25 am

This isn’t the same kitten with the broken paw and pink cast that was posted earlier is it? If so–not cool!

21 Shannon 01.04.09 at 3:29 am

Holy crap batman! That’s cute.

And relax – I’m sure kitteh wasn’t injured. I suppose you folks never threw your precious little human ones up in the air like this? I mean, they even made him a little costume!

22 joey 01.04.09 at 3:45 am

@metsakins, raise you a driftwood clock and call.

23 Theresa 01.04.09 at 3:53 am

“I like it! It make me feel strong . . . and brave . . . and tingly!”

24 dub1 01.04.09 at 3:59 am

Like watching Superman I: a reminder how special effects have improved in the visual ahrts over the last 25 years

25 chanpon 01.04.09 at 4:33 am

Am I the only one who thinks the kitten looks like he’s doing a high-bar routine, because of the curtain rod in the back? Of course, he’d have the wrong outfit on for that.

26 jfc 01.04.09 at 4:37 am

this is animal abuse. This website should flag and remove all photos of animals being tossed or otherwise abused.

27 Juniper Jupiter 01.04.09 at 4:50 am

HEY! I just realized something!

Wasn’t the guy’s name that reggae-rapped with Sugar Ray on the song “FLY”…Supercat?

Coincidence? I think not!

28 Selphie van der Boffin 01.04.09 at 4:53 am

This is not animal abuse. Get a life.

29 Magi 01.04.09 at 5:04 am

I was going to say “in b4 ‘waaa cruelty baaaw’” but I guess I got beat to it.

30 Argentee 01.04.09 at 5:32 am

@joey How about a 3 ft tall brass-toned plastic spanish galleon hanging on the living room wall?

31 berthaservant 01.04.09 at 7:46 am

Impressive, as photoshopping was much more difficult in those days. (I’m KIDDING, Theo).

[Well, it was, though. Nobody had the software, they had to have hobby darkrooms instead, like my Dad... - Ed.]

Yay for flying cats!

32 jfc 01.04.09 at 8:14 am

Yup…still animal abuse
Hey Meg, how about you don’t remove this comment, eh? Stop condoning animal abuse.

33 cubbybutt 01.04.09 at 8:18 am

I have that same exact owl wall hanging!!!!!

34 ps from cubbybutt 01.04.09 at 8:24 am

I should add the following:
1) The owl wall hanging is made of paper mache.
2) It was made in Mexico.
3) As a child, I used to gaze at the owl in fear, because the beak had fallen off, and made it look extra scary. But then again, I was also terrified of floating up and bursting like a balloon against our popcorn ceiling. Clearly I was a strange kid.

35 cheumis 01.04.09 at 9:03 am

Noooooo don’t toss the baby around…sigh.

36 Brenda 01.04.09 at 9:23 am

How about some crewel work mushrooms.

37 Eyre32 01.04.09 at 9:33 am

It’s a bird! It’s a plane . . .

38 Katrina 01.04.09 at 12:17 pm

Ibid the people who realize that if the kitteh didn’t like it, he would mete out his/her own brand of justice, wait for it, 3,2,1 OUCH!

39 hamster-on-rye 01.04.09 at 12:37 pm

No one has mentioned the
hamster sidekick? I am mentioning the hamster
sidekick.

40 butter 01.04.09 at 1:29 pm

jfc:

I condoned animal abuse when I was with your mom last night. ;)

(Damn, that was too easy…)

41 metsakins 01.04.09 at 2:29 pm

@Brenda, I have those crewel work mushrooms, I’ll add a crewel work horoscope picture.

@Ed, caught me, I’m a 70’s girl (with a 60’s hubby.)

42 Theo 01.04.09 at 2:33 pm

Hmm, that situation is… familiar to me. (‘cept I’m the ’70s hubby)

43 Theresa 01.04.09 at 2:35 pm

Camp Song time again:
Up in the air, Junior Birdmen
Up in the air upside down.
Up in the air Junior Birdmen
With your noses to the ground.

And when you hear the grand announcement
That your wings are made of tin,
You will know the Junior Birdmen
Have turned their box tops in.

For it takes five box tops,
Four bottle bottoms,
Three wrappers,
Two labels,
And one thin dime. Ahhhhhh!

44 Brenda 01.04.09 at 2:50 pm

@ metsakins and Ed
I realized I had revealed my age too, as soon as I posted, but then it was too late.. Man those crewel things were fun to make, but such dust collectors. You would need a kitty duster.

45 Jennie Mello 01.04.09 at 2:52 pm

how come nobody mentioned the *turguoise* walls? Does it only bother me? Are they back in style?

46 JennieMello 01.04.09 at 2:53 pm

turQuoise.

47 Theo 01.04.09 at 2:55 pm

I was thinking “turduoise” actually.

48 Brenda 01.04.09 at 2:55 pm

Only if you add red curtains on a traverse rod.

49 Brenda 01.04.09 at 2:56 pm

Those curtains are probably brocade.

50 Hon Glad 01.04.09 at 3:03 pm

Is it a bird is it a plane, no it’s super Kitty.

51 Katrina 01.04.09 at 3:58 pm

Theresa-I never went to camp, but it is very clear to me that yours was the only one worth attending!

52 Theo 01.04.09 at 4:03 pm

Oh now that’s HARDLY a fair assumption.

53 metsakins 01.04.09 at 4:47 pm

Which reminds me of my favorite line from the second Adam’s Family movie…

Wednesday says–
“You sent us to camp, they made us sing.”

and my camp was good and so was my kids. Both well worth attending!

54 Charlie 01.04.09 at 5:18 pm

Its a orange kitty with a cape o.o he needs a hat and monocle then he can wrought destruction…noes we are doomed

[Pardon my pickiness, but that's past tense; I think you mean he can *wreak* destruction, y'know, and/or havoc - Ed.]

55 starling 01.04.09 at 6:10 pm

My dad’s just laid his darkroom to rest by installing a skylight in the loft, Teho.

[Good choice, I approve... - Ed.]

That’s not a turquoise wall, that’s a green wall! Turquoise is cool! Green, not so much.

[...but now you've wandered into questionable territory - Ed.]

56 Mike Curtis 01.04.09 at 6:47 pm

It was my kitten Peaches, and she was fine with it. If you look you’ll see the cuffs of my Superman costume on my hands. We went out Trick or Treating that year.

Mike

57 mervtheflamingo 01.04.09 at 6:58 pm

In my experience, lima beans are not typically turquoise.

58 Jezebel 01.04.09 at 8:05 pm

Puke-oise.

59 M 01.04.09 at 8:19 pm

Mike, that is one of the cutest things I have EVER heard. Taking your superkitty out trick-or-treating in MATCHING constumes? That deserves a big… SQUEEEE!!!!

60 Jenny H 01.04.09 at 8:23 pm

I want that owl!!!

61 warrior rabbit 01.04.09 at 8:36 pm

Actually, wrought is the past tense of work, and wreaked is the past tense of wreak.

62 warrior rabbit 01.04.09 at 8:40 pm

And I also think it’s awesome that you took your kitty trick-or-treating!

63 "Nuffer" 01.04.09 at 8:49 pm

Look, it’s a kitty! It’s a flying kitty! It’s CO condoning animal cruelty!

How do you know Peaches was “fine with it”, Mike? She told you so, right? She must’ve also possessed the superkitty power of vocalization in perfect English. Holy cat, if my kid tossed our furball in the air, I’d start keeping a closer eye on my kid and the psychiatrist’s number handy.

But who cares what I think. I’m just a loony nuffer who doesn’t like animal cruelty.

64 Theo 01.04.09 at 8:52 pm

Warrior, you might work destruction; I wreak it.
(let’s call the whole thing off)

65 warrior rabbit 01.04.09 at 8:56 pm

It’s good that you wreak it. Just be sure later to say that you wreaked it and not that you wrought it. Whatever you do, don’t say you reeked it, unless you were in the john at the time. ;)

66 Theo 01.04.09 at 8:57 pm

I *rocked* that old destruction, girlfriend.

67 Olga 01.04.09 at 9:54 pm

Scaring the beejeezus out of poor widdle kitty? NOT CUTE!!!

68 Anonymous Person Who Just Found Cute Overload 01.04.09 at 9:57 pm

Why are the hamsters on leashes?

69 Jennie Mello 01.04.09 at 10:14 pm

because they are dangerous?

70 Jennie Mello 01.04.09 at 10:22 pm

and unpredictable?

71 Charlie 01.04.09 at 11:11 pm

my bad english doesn’t matter we are still doooooomed!

72 Charlie 01.04.09 at 11:11 pm

doooooooooooooooooooomed

73 Gail (the first one) 01.04.09 at 11:48 pm

@metsakins: I looove that movie!! Especially Wednesday…..that deadpan delivery, the best!

@Theresa: I bow to your vastly superior camp song knowledge! One of the few I remember is about the billboard (“smoke Coca Cola cigarettes, chew Wrigley’s Spearmint beer…”)

Meanwhile, that is a COOL story about trick or treating with the kitteh!!

74 Theo 01.05.09 at 12:02 am

Doooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooomed??

75 chris 01.05.09 at 1:12 am
76 Selina's Mommy 01.05.09 at 2:49 am

Dun da DUNNNNNNNN!!!
super-CAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!!

77 Amanda 01.05.09 at 3:47 am

So did anybody notice that the two fingers on the person’s left hand kinda look like a heart? I thought that was pretty cute as well. loves it :)

78 Colleen 01.05.09 at 6:11 am

Mike, thanks for clearing up that kitty liked it. :) Just when you can’t tell from a photo, you can’t help but wonder, you know? Bet you got more candy than anyone that year.

79 Elisha B. 01.05.09 at 5:45 pm

I just think it’s too cool that someone found an old pic of cuteness and posted here. My kids responses would be …. they had cameras back then? And I would respond … yes we even had music videos too! (Not that I totally lived for them or anything..)

Oh as to the wall art, how about some of those wooden fork and spoon sets? My family home had them up on the wall until the mid 90’s.

80 peaseapea 01.05.09 at 5:48 pm

His first three movies were pretty good, but his fourth movie kinda sucked. Flying around the world disarming mousetraps – soo laaaame.

81 Lerrinus 01.05.09 at 11:06 pm

*stares at the hands*

*looks for the heart*

*finally sees it*

Yay!

82 lauren 01.06.09 at 1:50 am

LOL so cute!

83 binky-mama 01.06.09 at 4:51 am
