OH! That is heartbreaking-poor little tinker! But I bet when he/she wakes up they are doing their best to tear around on that thing! Kittens cannot be stopped! I had a foster kitten who had was born with a terribly deformed leg that had to be amputated. When I picked him up after surgery I was devastated and was sure it was too much for him to bear. The next morning I was so fearful to open his little crate, and when I did he SURGED out and hasn’t stopped since! Of course I had to adopt him, and now he is Charlie Parsley-biggest terror (and love) of our 5 cats! Animals are truly amazing.
I fostered a little guy like this. He was found in the middle of a road, rolling around. He had broken his upper arm bone, either having been dumped from or been hit by a car.
The local rescue group found a vet who would donate his services and this wonderful doctor put a pin in to stabilize the fracture.
“Pierce” was in a body cast for weeks and stayed with me.
Is there anything more pathetic than a kitten in a body cast? I think not.
My little foster guy had a wonderful attitude and learned how to get around in that body cast very well. He grew up to be a splendidly handsome cat who found a forever home a few Christmases ago.
I think of him often.

What’s the healing time for kittenette broken leggers?
I’m guessing fairly quickly, so most likely the little one will be castless very soon and able to get into all the regularly scheduled kitteh mischief.

As I am currently healing from a mangled elbow, I can so relate to this little kitteh. I hope they’ve given him some good pain meds. I’m thinking, perhaps, a little catnip gas mask… I expect in no time he will be running about creating havoc.
The cast wasn’t made extra-long so hopefully that means it won’t be on for a long time (to allow for growth). The part that gets me is that you can tell just how tiny he is by seeing how the bandage snugs in around his body. The COXCU on the face kills me!

AmyJ: Yes, his feet DO look big! My George has big feets, and he went from 8 lbs. at age 8 months, to 14 lbs. at 10 months! And he’s still growing! This bebeh is so cute, with the pink earsies, leeps and toe beans. Hope him feels all betters soon.

curious kittens will get in all kinds of trouble. we think our cat jumped off our roof when he was a kitten and someone left an upstairs window open. he had a little limp and we took him to the vet, but it wasn’t broken, just hurting him. he got better in a week or two. i hope mr. or ms. pink cast is pain-free pronto, too.

I’m with Jilger on this: While it is definitely sad to see him sick with his cast, he has someone who cares for him, is willing to spend the money (no mean feat!) and time to nurse him back to health. That’s what I call *love*.

Thanks for the comments, everyone! This is my kitty, Gus. I’m really thrilled that this made it onto cuteoverload!
We found Gus on a farm back in September, and he wasn’t using that leg at all. We adopted him because we fell in love and were worried he wouldn’t survive otherwise. The leg indeed was broken, which the vets say happens easily in a small kitten. He had surgery in October to repair it and had a cast on for two weeks. There was also a metal post that was wrapped around the outside of his leg and went up around his neck, hence why he could fall asleep with it sticking straight out. The break couldn’t be repaired 100% as it was too severe, but he’s doing wonderfully and only has a limp for now. We’ve started physical therapy with him to improve the limp and to hold off arthritis as long as possible. Gus has always been incredibly happy and carefree, and has never cared less that his leg is icky.
I told her rugby is a hard sport, but did she listen? Nnooo, she didn’t. I told her that pug was a ringer, did she listen? Nnooo she didn’t.
Then I told her to always come home for love and did she listen? yes, she finally did.
Yay, Gus-Gus! Thanks, Jen, for coming on here and explaining this poor kitteh’s plight. So glad he’s with such caring owners as yourself! Kittehs this tiny and cute shouldn’t be without human mommies and daddies.

Awww, makes me think of my first pet Chester, who we got after he’d been run over by a tricycle driven by his mom’s owner’s child. He was already healed by the time we got him, but he must’ve looked like this at one point (except in B&W, he was a beautiful silver/gray blend in a tabby pattern). He walked with a pronounced leg “swing” (the broken leg swung to the outside then forward as he walked or ran – I wouldn’t call it a limp) for the rest of his life but it didn’t seem to cramp his style at all. I would climb way up in the peach tree to read books and Chester would climb up with me and sit on my lap and purr for hours. Sigh. That was around 45 years ago.

As someone who works in a clinic, I can say that as long as they get proper treatment, animals do GREAT on three legs! I’ve seen many happy-go-lucky amuputees. Animals are much tougher than we think. We own a three legged kitten (birth defect had to be fixed with amputation) and she does just great. Although we do have to think like a cat and put little ramps and steps all over so she can still jump up on things. She runs like a little bunny.

One of our cats, Dale, is in the hospital right now getting IV and has a little red stocking bandage to keep it in place. Her prognosis is not good (kidney disease) so please pray for her. We have 3 other cats including a tripod name Adrianna who is the most affectionate sweetie. Dale should be coming home tomorrow and the others will be thrilled to have her back. All our cats came from this shelter http://www.animalumbrella.org which is a great place to donate to if you want to help some wonderful kitties. They work very hard to help sick and injured kitties and find homes for the ones who can be adopted. Thank you.

Poor little sweetie. Reminds of when my boy Salem came to us at 6 weeks old. He had a broken leg (broken by his foster carer’s when someone trapped his little leg in a door.) He had a plaster cast on with paw prints on the bandgage. So cute! Byt the time we had to take him to the vet to have it taken off, it was filthy! He’d drag it through his food bowl, the litter tray, whack his brother on the head with it, you name it!
Salem now has a dislocated back knee and broke that leg months ago. It needed surgery and pins. Oh, and he lost an eye a couple of years ago. Doesn’t stop him being a rampaging pest of a kitty! We love him so much!
a couple years ago my long hair chihuahua broke his leg (while home alone no less) and had to have a blue cast like this. It was so sad seeing him try to walk and run and go up stairs and go outside

For anyone who is thinking of getting an animal companion, and becoming one, I can recommend the Corgi. They are the most cat-like dog I have ever had the pleasure of living with. It is like getting two in one. Dog outside the house, puddy-tatt inside.
Just wonderful, if you, too, have a stubborn streak in you and can lovingly reign him/her in when he/she ’selectively listens’ I think a Corgula could be for you.

Dale has been home from the hospital for 2 days now and is eating fairly well again. She has CRF and we have to give her subcutaneous fluid therapy daily. She’s been a very good girl about it so far. She was thrilled to be home as were our other 3 kitties to see her. We know she doesn’t have good prospects for long-term but it’s a joy to have her something of her old self again.
Ohhh.. poor kitty. This is kinda cute, but that poor little kitten must be terrified. I had a kitten with a broken leg and the injury and cast really freaked her out.. she would suddenly thrash around screaming many times a day. Also, she had difficulty washing herself and would urinate on herself. Her siblings were really upset and would hiss and run if they got near her. It really scarred her.. took her quite awhile to get over the emotional damage and she was always a bit off.
Definitely belongs in ‘cute or sad?’.
