the presents are labelled – do you think the goggies knew to open the packages with their names on?

also: i LOVE the kind of people who would wrap up their goggies’ gifts so the goggies could have the fun of opening them. THAT is what christmas is all about, charlie brown.

  2. Utterly sickened says:

That was beautiful. Sigh. Looks like The Son and I will be going to the shelter in the new year…and you can’t get just one, or he’ll be lonely! (If my wife asks, this is the story and we’re sticking to it…)

  3. Karebear says:

    awww geeez
I smiled through that whole thing. And then that little message at the end? AWWW made me frown!
    but happy doggies they are/were!

  4. Not really sickened says:

Sorry, didn’t mean to post using that name. Those pups do not sicken me at all.

  5. Dreamspinner Cheryl says:

Cute-but how the bleen do you keep them from unwrapping ALL the gifts under the tree?

[That's what the labels are for, silly! - Ed.]

Six doggies and seven cats are why there are no gifts yet under the tree-and won’t be until Christmas!

  6. janaki says:

    ahn!!!!!!!!1

  7. Erebella says:

That was great! Made me remember how it felt being a kid on Christmas morning.

  8. Paunchie says:

cute dogs! Like the one at the end with the piece of paper stuck on hims mouf! Lop ears!

But, is this really a behavior you want to encourage??

  9. Junior says:

I was smiling through the whole thing until the very end, then instant tears.

That’s the only bummer about owning pets :(

    Well, that and the hair.

  10. Jiffknee says:

Ahhh . . . bacon scented wrapping paper. I use the same kind myself. Hard to keep the hubby from unwrapping before Christmas Day though.

Love the one ear up and one ear down action. Too cute!

  11. Annie says:

The music makes it- Lucy and Linus theme is my ring tone and it makes me happy every time I get a call.
    Lucky doggies. Great owners.

  12. Shoezq says:

arrgh! I was laughing and smiling throughout the entire video and then my eyes welled up with tears at the end. Thanks. A. Lot.

  13. kultgirl says:

    God I miss my doggy.

  14. carriegood says:

go to the youtube page and click on “more info” to read the story. i read it before watching, and it made the whole thing very bittersweet. but defintely more sweet than bitter.
now, if you’ll excuse me, i have to go give my cat a big hug.

  15. willardsmom says:

My doggie always recognizes his presents by smell. I’d imagine he’d only make a mistake if I got my dad some rawhide for Xmas :)

  16. Shreela says:

Their humans better make sure they have prezzies under the tree every Christmas from now on.

My father put off buying our family dog’s prezzie, and they were sold out when he finally went. Daddy figured King probably wouldn’t notice.

    Wrong!

After we kids opened our presents and started cleaning up the wrapper paper, and bringing our toys to our room, King kept looking expectantly at Daddy. Then after we had everything picked up, King went into the corner and pouted.

Daddy called me out to sneak into the kitchen for some Christmas goodies, and use thrown away wrapping paper for an impromptu gift. Then he told me to sneak it under the tree in an unobvious place (King was smart).

Daddy played it up, and “found” King’s prezzie, then played up opening it. King got all excited, and was happy with his prezzie.

Daddy never postponed King’s Christmas prezzie again, and King always got excited towards the end of gift opening.

  17. Lenore says:

I liked the victorious jump onto the couch with the toy! “I got just what I wanted!”

  18. scooterpants says:

i love that the old golden is all “You guys are gunna get is SO much trubbles!”
and keeps looking at mama to tell on them.
all of my pets have stockings on x-mas morning, this is our favorite part of x-mas, i’m going to wrap some of their little presents this year so they have have a paper shredding party too! so cute!

  19. scooterpants says:

    dang, my post didnt post.

  20. Oh no! Bumpuses!!

  21. Theo says:

Scooter — you mean that comment above your comment?

  22. Mandy says:

My three stooges (cats) get presents wrapped plus a stocking each full of wrapped presents. Plus, from grammew and gammpaw, they also get more presents.

I like to spoil them that way. I also do it for the purrdays too. They (I) get a buttercream cake, they get their own can of Fancy Feast (they don’t get wet food except on purrdays and holidays), and lots of presents.

Yes, I know, I need therapy. But, they are my kids and I will always treat them as such.

  23. Theresa says:

Aww, so sweet. Copperbat, do yourself a favor and get yourself some new buddies before next Xmas!

  24. anniem says:

ahh how we luvs our animals! I usually just give my doggie his present unwrapped – but this idea is really cute! I was all happy watching the pups – then got sad at the end. {sniff} Gonna go give my furkid an EXTRA big hug now!

  25. Paunchie says:

cute spotty faced shepherd too. Aww.

  26. anonnymous says:

My dogs can smell the presents for them too – I have a box in my closet and one dog was trying to climb up to it last nite!
I loved the video, so sweet, but the end made me sad too.

  27. Uber prosh:)

  28. platedlizard says:

My kitteh watched the whole thing with me, gave me a look that said ‘Please Mom?’…and then bit my elbow. She, uh, likes to play rough.

    We’ll see about presents, Kitteh, we’ll see…

  29. Shirley says:

Murphy, our chocolate lab, would attempt to steal the stockings from the mantel on Christmas Eve, knowing that one of them contained treats just for her. We will miss her this year also.

  30. Liz says:

What happy puppies! The end was sad but they clearly had great lives and brought joy to their owners.
My kitties have tiny stockings and get a visit from Santa. One year they got crunchy balls filled with catnip but that went awry and Santa doesn’t bring them drugs anymore. :)

  31. Michelle S says:

Yay! My dogs are featured on CO! :D

For those curious, their presents were wrapped only in white tissue paper, so that’s how they knew not to open anything that wasn’t in white tissue. They checked under the tree every day for white gifts until they found the pile on xmas morning. They were all in their teens when this movie was made, and they’d been doing this since they were puppies.

  32. Lisa P says:

The poor sweet, silly goldie just couldn’t quite figure out what was going on. I hope the other goggies shared!

  33. Gail (the first one) says:

@Michelle S: You are obviously a wonderful Mommy!!! What lucky doggies to have been loved so much.

  34. Ryan says:

Every year without fail, I get presents for my two cats. And every year, without fail, they rip apart their packages, completely ignore the gift and go nuts playing with the ribbons and wrapping paper. Kinda makes it easy to shop for them :)

  35. tank says:

Awesome. I miss them now too. :(

  36. Space Cowgirl says:

Actually, my feeling was more “I’m glad I’m not the one who had to vacuum after.” But it is really cute and sweet!

  37. Juniper Jupiter says:

Awww! Michelle S, YOU are an AWESOME MOMMY!

    :’)

  38. berthaservant says:

Shreela — great story! Michelle S. — how wonderful you are!

My kitties never want presents. Just the wrapping papiers, thank yo.

  39. T.U.M. says:

One year, Grandma wrapped up a bag of cat food and put it under the tree as a joke.

When they opened it Christmas morning, it was empty. The cat had opened a tiny hole and fished the kibbles out one by one without collapsing the bag.

  40. T.U.M. says:

My Mississippi likes to de-bow the packages. She doesn’t rip the paper or play with the bows or anything. She just calmly walks up, takes the bow in her teeth, tugs it off, sets it down on the floor, and looks up at me all, “There! I’ve fixed it up for you!”

  41. CJ says:

    “We miss you.”

Oh god. Those three words had me in tears. I miss my old dog painfully on Christmas Day every year, especially when I see her stocking in the box when we’re decorating.

Merry Christmas, doggies both here and gone. :)

  42. Villy says:

    *sniffles*

That made me cry at the end.

  43. temperance says:

    amen to that, CJ.

  44. spb says:

CJ, I have an idea for you… why don’t you pull your old dog’s stocking out of the box and hang it up. Then put something in it in memory of him/her. For example you could make a donation to a shelter or charity. You could actually put the check you write into the stocking and then on Christmas day you could take it out in honor of your dog and mail it.

It could be something different… but it would be like the gift was from your dog. A good way to remember the love you shared and do some good at the same time.

Just a thought. Make it a good memory (i.e. a new tradition) rather than a sad one when coming across the stocking each year. Kinda makes you in charge of the emotions. Know what I mean? As a pet-lover, I too know what it is to loose someone that was so integral to your life.

  45. Arachnophile says:

We do something similar every year too. The all white tissue is a good idea to distinguish between the people prezzies and the pup prezzies. :D LOVED this vid.

  46. Shannon says:

We usually give pet prezzies altho this year things are a bit tighter. I LOVE the white tissue paper idea, wonder if my old dog could learn that trick…

The same old dog ate TWO candy canes with wrappers this afternoon. Doofus. He has NEVER done that before.

  47. totalee puppy says:

Good Grief! Pets are a wonderful part of the holidays. And pets who are
    gone are always celebrated
    in our hearts.

  48. ornith says:

The paper is the bestest part of the gifts, amirite?

My family’s dogs have always gotten presents (just a treat with paper around it usually) because they get jealous of all the humans getting presents otherwise!

  49. scooterpants says:

    T-
    I am a dork.
YOU of all people, know that.
    word.

  50. Kar says:

I LOVE that shot on the couch. The whole “lookit what I got mommy” joy.

  51. scooterpants says:

oh they could have totally left off the ‘we miss you’ thing.
pleeze peeps, dont share the downer. we need happy stuff the entire way thru..
share the luv at this time of year especially now please. ,,,,;)

  52. scooterpants says:

    I must go cry now…

  53. Michelle S says:

Aww, scooterpants. Don’t be sad. My beautiful dogs had very long and happy lives. They took such good care of me and in turn, they were much loved. I agree the season should be filled with love, joy, and happiness, but for me it’s also a time for warm memories of those special souls we’ve been lucky enough to know.

  54. scooterpants says:

    michelle-
    i have lost too many.
so i like to see happy things here, and i think the video was so lovely, i just think they could have left off the wording at the end and let us all feel good about it.
it broke my heart all over again.

  55. Kristabelle says:

What a great video. Michelle, you taught your kiddies well. Looks like the present opener was part border collie and shepherd – you know, give a border collie a job and he’ll do it!!! What a sweet face at the end.
I can only hope that my dogs (now 6 & 8) live well into their teens. They get Flossies in their stockings. My husband said that yesterday he walked into the living room and one dog was staring at the fireplace (I hung the empty stockings), and then today, the other one was doing the same thing. He told them they only had to wait a few more days for Santa Paws to get here…

  56. Michelle S says:

haha Kristabelle, yes she sure was a determined individual who loved having something challenging to do. She was a purebred Australian Shepherd (stock type – who often very much resemble Border Collies).

Santa Paws! I love it! >.<

  57. AuntieMame says:

What sweet old things! I love old doggies! And hearing that they’ve passed on just made the video that much sweeter. *snif*

  58. pounce says:

I especially love the guilty little looks from the other two dogs … “uh … are we really allowed to be doing this?”

  59. Okay…I’ve watched this video 3 times and each time I’ve choked up. Why do I torture myself??!?

Michelle, it’s so lovely to see such healthy dogs in their teens. I think there are other doggies who are waiting for you to be their mum…come on now!!

I love the old white face on the golden…SO SWEET!! And the Aussies’ – are they both Aussies? – faces look so determined. *sigh* I want a doggy.

  60. *sniff* My comment was flagged as spam. *sniff* I have no idea why. :(

  61. Northern Tigress says:

This reminds me of my own childhood pup, Pierre the Poodle, who loved to help people open presents. All you had to do is get one corner undone, and he’d do the rest. No treats required, either; the paper was its own reward.

  62. zski says:

The yellow lab was all like “are you SURE we’re sposed to do this? You’re gonna get in trouble you know…”

  63. Hon Glad says:

Look we made you some snow.

  64. Theo says:

Shaz, I’m all over it, no worries.

  65. totalee puppy says:

Scooterpants–Since when are you a dork? Some of us
feel more sensitive, have more trouble with the holidays…I’m one of them.
    Not all memories are good,
especially at this time of year. Your honesty means a lot. Plus you are one of
    the most delightful peeps
    on CO.

  66. Mandy says:

Yeah the little thing at the end keeled me too.

My kitty is curled in a ball on the couch here.

I, too, only get her wet food at Christmas, and she usually doesn’t like it, actually… trying pouches instead of cans this year, combo pack or something.

Every year, I get her a new food/water dish and last year I got her a covered litter box. Ran into a rough patch so had to use the old one in the summer but bringing back the covered one with the ground corn husk (flushable! but I am not allowed in my apt.) green litter. I am also getting her groomed on Monday. :) xoxo

I miss my westie/goldie mix (yes you read that right) Tori, too… lost her in 2002, she was 11.

We got her some stuffies one year and she helped open them, we have pictures.

  67. *sniff* Thanks, Theo.

Anyway, Michelle, it’s so lovely to see teenaged doggies looking so healthy. You can see they had a good life.

I think there are some doggies waiting for you to be their new mum now…I’m sure of it…

(I watched this 3 times and choked up each time…why do I torture myself??)

(This was the gist of my original post.) :)

  68. Thanks, Theo…but…but…it happened again! What am I doing wrong? :(

  69. Theo says:

Y’know, Shaz, your original comment *is* posted. Along with the new one.

  70. Okay…that is weird…they were not posted when I posted my whines but now I see them. They also weren’t there when I went back to check. I’m wondering if this is the same thing that happened with Scooterpants. I swear I’m not imagining things!! Anyway…thanks. :p

  71. Melissa says:

    OY.
I actually was teary through the whole thing…just cuz it was so warm and fuzzy and adorable. Then I thought of all the dogs who aren’t as lucky as all of ours to have such a loving home. AND THEN
of course the end note…at which point full blown bawling ensued….
    Thanks for sharing :)

  72. HvsL says:

I figured they must have been taught that white prezzies were theirs- very smart idea, and one I may adopt when I get a new four legged fuzzy. I miss my old man a lot too; we would take him tree shopping every year at the tree farm, and he KNEW that he was gonna get to run around like an idiot for 2 or 3 hours while we picked out a tree. “OMGOMGOMG TREES!! YAY!!! I ‘MEMBER DIS!! DIS IS FUN TIME!”
