Aww man. And here I thought I was the first to comment.

  5. Annie says:

The little tootsies are no bigger than a strand of Hair. And the teeny tiny antenae so fine you can not see them.

  6. jill-o says:

Yeah, yeah, the caterpillar is cute and all, but what about our person of mystery, one Jessie Gower?

A quick Google search reveals that Jessie is either:

    A) a cost accounting manager in the copper industry

    OR

    B) the third place finisher in the 2002 Dartistry Championship – Ladies’ ONLY Blind-Draw

    Jessie, care to elaborate?

  22. Annie says:

Do you think you can play the this little piggy went to market game with a caterpillar?

  23. Annie says:

@ Teho perhaps I never noticed it before because I never was on both browsers before at the smae time.. but the comments don’t show up at the smae time in each one and there is some wierd lag… Sorry I am now on a mystery hunt at work like a dork trying to make sense of it LOL I wll let it go but when I get home tonight ohh the experiments I plan on having ; )

  24. Poohbear says:

Ghost of Jessie Gower, we salute you…

  25. inka says:

    silverfish?? eww

  26. Shannon says:

I admit. I had to look to see the cute. But I swear, that caterpillar has a little head tilt attitude going on there! Now, that’s cute!

  27. Annie says:

Little caterpillar sings as it strolls down finger
These boots are made for walking
and that is just what they will do
one of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you.

  28. Annie says:

    Swish Swish Swish Swish

Sound of caterpillar skiing down Finger Mountain.

  29. ratchic says:

You can see the tiny eye ball and those antennae/tail whiskers are longer than he!!!!

I never knew there was such a small caterpillar. I only know of the furry colorful ones all over the trees in the spring.

  30. lrm says:

Ew, that is a bug, I think a silverfish/centipede, and they are NOT cute! I prefer fur, but even feathers and scales in small amounts, but not bugs! (Sorry I had to vent!)

  31. the other Brenda says:

It’s only cute because it’s so small.

  32. Gail (the first one) says:

It’s sad, actually. The caterpillar’s children can only go to school one at a time during winter, cause they only have 1 full set of shoes. In summer, each one does have flip-flops!!!

  33. Brie says:

    Okay, that’s adorable.

  34. Jiffknee says:

’tis a wee fuzzy cat-r-pillar . . .how is that not ka-yute? It isn’t a silverfish, and centipedes are scaly and fuzzless.

What type of myth/flutterby this will become, I wonder.

  35. eek says:

Yeah…that looks like a tiny house centipede to me, not a caterpillar. They are the most creepiest, disgusting bugs I’ve ever had in my house (at least at the sizes I’ve seen them grow to). EW. I can just feel them crawling on me now! Bugs are pretty much NEVER cute to me, except that one “Carnivale” mantis thing from a while back. :)

  36. doxnsox says:

    Leetle werm!!

If it were any bigger I would be completely disgusted.

  37. Fegli says:

Now usually those things disgust me (I squashed one last night), but the “deedle-dee” sound effect makes this one OK :)

  38. warrior rabbit says:

It’s definitely not a silverfish, and it does look a little centipede-y. Where’s Bug Man to give us the skinny?

  39. the bug man says:

(balances glasses on end of nose and looks over them)

Ahem. That is certainly a larval Lepidoptera, or, as the unwashed heathen call it, a caterpillar.

And, if you *must* know, caterpillars only have six true legs, like all insects. The rear “legs” are not in fact legs at all, but mere extensions of the body wall. They arise from a *completely* different developmental pathway from true legs, and–

(vanishes in a hail of pedant-seeking tomatoes)

  40. the bug man says:

    (emerges from tomato pile)

    Oh, and–

    (deep breath)

    SQUEEEE!! So cuuuuuuuuuute!

  41. Vanessa says:

Okay people, that is a centipede, and there is NOTHING cute about centipedes.

If you want to know how to tell the difference between a centipede and a caterpillar, look at the body and the tail. Caterpillar bodies are fat and fuzzy. Centipede bodies are thin and hairy. Also, look at the tail. A centipede (like the one pictured) has little feelers coming out of it’s tail. A caterpillar does not.

  42. Theo says:

You’re describing no centipede I’ve ever heard of, Vanessa.

  43. Mary says:

Alo, would you like to come in for a spot of Tea?

  44. Angelstar says:

I’ve found the boots! *waves in air* here, let me put them on. *squishes* oopsies…

  45. Vanessa says:

Theo, if you don’t believe me, look at this Wikipedia link:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scutigera

  46. Jen says:

It does look a bit like a house centipede. They are creepy, but they’re pretty harmless and can prey on insects you really don’t want in your home, like roaches.

    http://www.whatsthatbug.com/category/centipedes-and-millipedes/centipedes/

  47. oni says:

    it’s a FUZZY caterpillar, vanessa.

  48. Annie says:

Sorry Vanessa that is not the same as what is pictured here..though definately similar in look.
But I am thinking maybe the common tent caterpillar
    see more here.

    Any other guesses

    http://www.whatsthiscaterpillar.co.uk/america/hairy.htm

  49. gato says:

I’m with Vanessa. Definitely a small house centipede. I’ve seen enough of them to know. ::Shiver::

  50. minjo says:

Eww. That’s a baby house centipede.

It may be a baby, but it’s made of 100% pure evil.

  51. SoCalSis says:

Oh to live on Finger Mountain,
with the barkers and the tiny balloons…
You can’t have twenty (legs) on Finger Mountain,
though you’re think you’ll be crawlin’ away too soon, crawlin’ way too soon…

  52. JR says:

@ the bug man: thank you

Look at da widdle cattypiwwar! I just want to scoogie heem!

P.S. correct me if i’m wrong, but don’t centipedes have legs on their sides, not under them? That would make this guy a not-centipede.

  53. Theo says:

re: “House Centipede” — I know what those are, my cats & I all hunt them. How anybody can look at the caterpillar in THIS post, though, and see one of those things which crawl out of your downstairs shower drain…? I just don’t get it. This is not that.

  54. Melinda says:

It’s a freshly hatched gypsy moth caterpillar. Google is your friend.
    http://insects.about.com/b/2008/04/30/its-raining-tiny-caterpillars.htm

  55. warrior rabbit says:

Thankgs Bug Guy. Vanessa, that doesn’t look anything like what’s pictured here. Melinda wins! Way to google.

I’d have googled it, but I googled a spider that scared the bejesus out of me the other day, and that’s enough insect googling for me for at least three months. :shudder:

  56. Kimski says:

    So teeneey, I LOLed.

And THE COMMENT COUNT IS WONKY!!!!!!!!

Oh and it eeeees cute (glad I am for once not on the side of the nuffers).

Insect Rights! (marching with lots of legs)

it’s sooo cute, I can hear it going “dum de dum dum…. where are the leefs, where is the grass, where’s my food…. what strange planet am I on. Nobody told me there’d be fleshy warm ground like dis….”

Also I call rule #14. It is teeny tiny compared to lines in hand.

  57. Katrina says:

I’ve got to agree with tiiiiny tent caterpillar-or gypsy moth. We had an infestation long ago-, what 1972 or so, when my poor sister went driving with the top down on Rt 68-very full of trees. Poor sister has gypsy moths falling from the trees on her and gypsy moth scat all over her and the car, a Triumph. We know a gypsy moth when we sees one around here! I’ll stop with the details.
I still think the little ones are cute. Theo- what are you using to hunt them- a 30-30 over/under or a 22?

  58. Linda says:

Ugh, it looks like the super-creepy house centipedes that jump at me every now and then in my basement. eeeee

  59. Brandy says:

Mary, ROFLMAO @ Labrynth reference……c’mon, you could meet the missus!

  60. Theresa says:

The problem with ID-ing cattypillars is that the pictures in books are all enlarged to show detail, so they seem to be monsters. But the many of the real things are so tiny, you can’t see any of those details.

  61. Theresa says:

@Kinski, I think those are the Processionary caterpillars. Here they are, lining up for their tiny picket signs:
    http://i4.tinypic.com/16j0qk5.jpg

  62. Theo says:

Katrina, we use TEH PAWZ UF CRAWLY DOOOM! (or whatever loose reading material happens to be sitting on the toilet tank)

  63. Theo says:

(by the way, I think Melinda’s correct)

  64. Theo says:

Theresa — “processionary caterpillars” conjures a… well, I can’t really believe I’m about to use this word without irony, but it conjures a delightful mental image. And the photo just validates it.

  65. Theresa says:

    “^^^ “^^^ “^^^ “^^^ “^^^ “^^^

  66. Theo says:

first I was all “huh???” but then I LOLd

  67. Theo says:

    abooooooooout FACE!

    ^^^” ^^^” ^^^” ^^^” ^^^” ^^^”

  68. Annie says:

Yes Melinda is correct good find Melinda. And the processionary catterpillars … I opened the photo and went Hunh a hairy worm???? Enlarged and giggled.

then I see Theresa’s comment and I am thinking thank goodness I have no coffee yet.

    okay

Off to spanish class I march. visions of wolly worms dancing in my head.

  69. Susan L says:

First a lizard, although with admittedly lovely tropical colors, and then a worm with lots of little icky feet. This is turning into creepy crawly overload instead of cute overload.

  70. Theo says:

[notes how the Cute Overload Master Plan is progressing like clockwork]

  71. Lindsay C says:

    Yay for the A!

That said, that little guy’s really cute for being a gypsie moth hatchling. I’m glad I don’t live where that photo was taken…. *shudders*

But he’s still really really cute…

  72. Vanessa says:

Melinda, you’re right. I stand corrected. Sorry guys! :)

  73. Heather says:

Whether it’s a caterpillar or a centipede, it definitely evokes centipede-related feelings in me. AKA severe phobia omg omg omg omg. When that carnivale praying mantis was posted, I commented that the day I saw a centipede as a “cute” thing on here was the day I stopped visiting and/or recommending this website. SICK!!! Ugh. Not cute, shuddery icky. *reaches for Raid Spider Blaster – VERY effective at killing those little jerks.*

  74. anner says:

i’m pretty freaked out by centipedes, normally. they usually remind me of a bunch of spiders doing a conga line. but this little guy is just so…little! i guess i’m just a sucker for the miniature=cute phenomenon.

ugg boots, on the other hand…*shudder*

  75. cachorro says:

This is one of those days
when I learn a lot reading
    comments.
