OK OK, this is the story of the amazing Captain Rick Chipmunk, Space Adventurer (da-da-da-DAAAAA!!) who travels around space saving good people from the evil Baron von Nuffenstuff! First, our hero crash-lands on an alien planet in his Space Adventure Pod — NEEEAAAAWWWMMM! CRASH!!!
OH NO!!!1! Our hero is ambushed by the Interplanetary Space Army!!! PTEW PTEW PTEW!!! There’s too many of them, I surrender!!! says Rick!! Hah hah we will take you to our leader and he will kill you, say the Army Guys!!!!
Oh please mister Army Leader don’t kill me because I am the famous Rick Chipmunk, Space Adventurer (da-da-da-DAAAAA!!) and I need more Power Seeds to fix my Space Adventure Pod!!! Why didn’t you say so, I will send a scout to show you where are all the Power Seeds!!!1!
Um, why do you have to ride on my back?? Because I can see better and because it’s more funner, that’s why!!! OK, here are the Power Seeds, gotta go, byeeeeeee!!!!!

Skip, this Canadian powerpig dude (see flickr) has befriended the chipmunks in his yard. They aren’t pets.

@skip: I don’t think it’s a pet, but from the notes in the Flickr photoset from which these photos came, it appears that the chipmunks have gotten used to being around humans, getting treats from them and having their pictures taken. The photographer just puts some almonds where he’d like the chipmunk to pose, then waits.

Disclaimer: no animals or Army Guys were harmed in the making of this “film”. The Space Adventure Pod of course bit the dust… the Power Seeds were all eaten up… and poor poor Baron von Nuffenstuff… he didn’t make it. His stand-in had to… well… stand in for the promo shot above. (Fortunately, they wore the same sized helmet.) The official story is that the Baron lost his head in the ensuing battle, but reliable sources claim that Rick mis-took the helmet for a Power Seed, took a big bite out of it, and snapped the Baron’s head clean off. Rick was seen later gargling with mouthwash. Seems von Nuffenstuff’s have a nasty aftertaste.
