Damselfly Pr0n!

by Not That Mike The Other Mike on September 26, 2008

You know, you’d think that insect porn would be all sinister and nasty-like (heck, if it involved Praying Mantises, the "money shot" would include decapitation), but there’s something graceful about these mating dragonflies—almost romantic, in a way that’s hard to explain.  I can’t quite put my finger on the reason, though…

Tilt your head, genius.

I believe a “bleen” is in order.

[HURRRRRRRRRRR! *thpppt* - Ed.]

2 Renee 09.26.08 at 12:29 pm

awwww, it’s lurve!

3 SarahP 09.26.08 at 12:38 pm

5 katiedid 09.26.08 at 12:41 pm

awww they <3 each other!!!

6 Babs 09.26.08 at 12:44 pm

Well, this is a freaky way to start the day.

7 Audrey 09.26.08 at 12:47 pm

Aww, how lovely!

These are damselflies, not dragonflies, which makes it even cuter!

8 Dallas 09.26.08 at 12:47 pm

At first I was like…

“Aw, a heart. Cute. Now, what am I looking at here?? Such a bizarre lil dragonfly. Uh, wait… there’s two sets of wings. Um, hrmm… OH, OMG, OKAY!!!”

hahaha

9 nancy 09.26.08 at 12:51 pm

eeeuuuwwww:-P

10 Rosie A. 09.26.08 at 1:00 pm

aw, that’s sweet… even bugs can be romantic…

11 pounce 09.26.08 at 1:00 pm

You see, when you see dragonflies/damselflies flyin around in the air all hitched together, they’re not mating yet – they’re just involved in aerial foreplay!

12 AmyJ 09.26.08 at 1:01 pm

Definitely damselflies. And I think they fly around that way, don’t they? Mating on the fly, literally. Sort of their own mile high club?

Damselflies and dragonflies are beautiful, such amazing colors and iridescence, and beautiful wings as well.

13 momof2kitties 09.26.08 at 1:02 pm

Omgitsproncoveryoureyes!

Won’t something think of the kittehs? A NSFK tag would be appropriate here, no?

*takes off sarcasm hat*

14 AmyJ 09.26.08 at 1:03 pm

I didn’t know that, pounce, I always learned they mated while flying. Do they really not mate till they settle down?

15 momof2kitties 09.26.08 at 1:03 pm

Or, you could say someONE. If you’ve had more coffee than me. Sorry ’bout that.

16 Jim N. 09.26.08 at 1:12 pm

For a photo essay entitled “Love Bugs: Sex in the Insect World”, go to this link:

http://www.scienceray.com/Biology/Zoology/Love-Bugs-Sex-in-the-Insect-World.242827/1

It’s very cool. If you work in a beehive or ant colony, I suppose it’s NSFW.

17 Erebella 09.26.08 at 1:12 pm

I’ve always liked dragonflies. They’re neat looking, dainty, and they eat mosquitos which makes them one of the good bugs in my book. I especially like the blue ones. Cool pic.

18 Jezebel 09.26.08 at 1:16 pm

I find this photo disturbing. Please remove it! Dragonfly porn? On Friday?

19 Peter 09.26.08 at 1:16 pm

Remember: Wings fold back = damselfly.

20 Juno 09.26.08 at 1:24 pm

Fly United?

21 Estlin 09.26.08 at 1:36 pm

Remember: dragonflies eat mosquitoes. So, that’s another reason to like them.

Also, my rant: when will people stop using “bleen” in their first post? God, you look like a loser when doing that.

[Agreed, and agreed. That *used* to be the whole point, in fact... - Ed.]

22 Amanda 09.26.08 at 1:40 pm

This should not be in the Gee-ross! section.. This is so romantic and beautiful! It almost make me cry happy romantic tears! There is nothing odd or gross about this! I’m going to wallpaper it!

23 surfzone 09.26.08 at 1:40 pm

I got a picture of them a month ago… it’s here!

Where was your photo taken? What part of the world?

26 Hon Glad 09.26.08 at 1:59 pm

Is this a Damsel in distress or just having a damn good time?

27 Theo 09.26.08 at 2:03 pm

Juno — ha!

28 Jae 09.26.08 at 2:05 pm

Wow, Jim N! That link is great!

29 DKN 09.26.08 at 2:11 pm

Awww!!

Beeyootiful buggie booty call!

30 Kris 09.26.08 at 2:15 pm

So pretty! Nature is amazing.

31 bucket 09.26.08 at 2:16 pm

:’(

32 BeckyMonster 09.26.08 at 2:25 pm

Jezebel – Friday is the perfect day for damselfly porn! And please note that the irony between your comment and screen name is not lost on me!

Either way, I can’t wait for someone to say “I can’t believe my kids look at this site, now I actually have to talk to them about sex!”

33 Jennie Mello 09.26.08 at 2:39 pm

Much nicer that that show by Isabella Rosellini- which seriously disturbed me.

34 chanpon 09.26.08 at 2:43 pm

[Bow chik-a-bow-bow...]
*in deep Barry White voice* Oh yeah…

35 Ellen 09.26.08 at 2:56 pm

Heh, the Trojan side bar ad is particularly apropos.

[AAAARGH, contextual ad targeting! I shudder to think what they'll turn into after 8:00 PM... - Ed.]

36 darkshines 09.26.08 at 2:58 pm

When I was in the park the other day, a dragonfly landed on my leg. It was emerald gren and at least 7 inches long, so pretty <3

37 Pheas 09.26.08 at 3:03 pm

LOL@Juno!

Wonder what this RCF has in store ….

38 laureling 09.26.08 at 3:06 pm

Heh, nomtom said “money shot”

Great picture. Dragon/Damselflies are so pretty, from far away, when they’re close up I feel like they are going to eat me. Yes, I know, I have issues.

39 KailinRileysMom 09.26.08 at 3:12 pm

Arghhhh! Now I have to talk to my girls
about damsel fly sex!!! And just when it’s
time for Riley B to be spayed!

Sarc/off

40 Theo 09.26.08 at 3:13 pm

Pheas — it’s Friday already??

41 Rachel 09.26.08 at 3:26 pm

Yeah, other people mentioned it on here, but the reason it’s so beautifully romantic is because it’s a heart! Now if only I can figure out how to do that posish in my bedroom…

42 ThreeCatNight 09.26.08 at 3:30 pm

They come together on gossamer wings, catching the sun’s rays
But, unfortunately, in the end, the male of the species pays!

43 (the original) Mel 09.26.08 at 3:34 pm

Money shot

*giggles*

44 Alice Shortcake 09.26.08 at 3:38 pm

PHWOARRRRRR!

*does ladylike pelvic thrust*

45 Balamuthia 09.26.08 at 3:39 pm

“Tilt your head, genius”

LOLOLOLOL

46 edmundh 09.26.08 at 3:49 pm

“And that’s why birds do it,
bees do it,
Even damselflies do it!
Let’s do it,
let’s fall in love!”

Now I have Cole Porter stuck in my head.

47 Cat-astrophe 09.26.08 at 3:50 pm

I hate to burst anyone’s romantic bubble, but I really think it’s just a damselfly molting in an interesting way.

The “bottom” fly is just too pale, especially on the right side, and the eyes look funny. JMHO

48 AuntieMame 09.26.08 at 4:06 pm

I can see where you’re coming from, Cat-astrophe, but surely a damselfly would molt only its skin. It wouldn’t be molting its wings and head, too, would it? (And do damselflies eat their mates after…um…doing it?)

49 Mel2 09.26.08 at 4:06 pm

I don’t get it. What does “bleen” mean and why should one refrain from using it in one’s first post? I looked it up in Urban Dictionary and didn’t find anything that made sense. Can someone please explain it?

50 Monica the tiara chick 09.26.08 at 4:28 pm

Jennie Mello, that is exactly what I was thinking!

“If I were a dragonfly, I would make love in the heart position….”

51 Juno 09.26.08 at 4:30 pm

edmundh: Having a Cole Porter song stuck in your head is ALWAYS a good thing! (And I personally believe there’s a Cole Porter lyric for every occasion.)

52 ding 09.26.08 at 4:45 pm

Ah, the damselflies and dragonflies – beautiful shiny iridescent little flying jewels. So pretty. I’ve even seen them way out in the desert, which means that there must be water nearby, but only THEY know where it is.

53 Theresa 09.26.08 at 4:50 pm

@Jim N, the pictures are fantastic, but the text is also wonderful! Examples:
“A pair of Migrant Hawkers mates, the fantastic coloring of their bodies coordinating so well with each other. Found in Sweden, this dragonfly is known there as Höstmosaikslända which translates to Fall Mosaic.”

“The Robber Fly, which not many people find terribly attractive, has some fun in the sun. They can be recognized by their furry moustache and each has a group of three primitive eyes nestling between the larger two compound ones.”

54 Balamuthia 09.26.08 at 4:58 pm

@Mel2-

I guess “bleen” is just one of those mysteries. I looked it up on the C.O. glossary even and all I got was [...]

Other then finding it irrationally irritating, I got nothing on it’s origin.

55 Jezebel 09.26.08 at 5:07 pm

No, it’s definately damselfly nookie, the girl is on the bottom, she’s just not a flashy as her boyfriend.

56 Michelle S 09.26.08 at 5:09 pm

Lovely. <3

57 Martha in Washington 09.26.08 at 5:11 pm

Edmundh–That was exactly my first thought.

I love dragon/damselflies. I have a dried one that my son found tht sits on my mantle. It is still beautiful.

58 Mary (the first) 09.26.08 at 5:28 pm

I’m a little confused as to what I’m actually seeing here, anatomically speaking, but I suppose it doesn’t matter since I don’t intend to mate with a damselfly anytime soon.
Mel2 .. “bleen” is a substitute for “first” which people took inordinate amounts of glee in being first to comment even when they had no comment other than “first” .

59 AuntieMame 09.26.08 at 5:31 pm

“Bleen” doesn’t really mean anything. It’s just some nonsense that was used to replace “First!!1!” in posts, in hopes of getting people to realize how absurd it is to trumpet about being the first one to comment. But now people are just saying “Bleen” instead of “First.”

As if calling it “Bleen” or “Nawt Sekund” or whatever makes it better. A rose by any other name is just as annoying…

60 AuntieMame 09.26.08 at 5:32 pm

Yeah, what Mary (the first) said (first). I mean (bleen). :P

61 berthaservant 09.26.08 at 5:48 pm

Is every creature in the universe having sex but me? Or does the internet just make it look that way?

62 Mary (the first) 09.26.08 at 6:17 pm

No Berthas., me either.

64 Katherine 09.26.08 at 6:59 pm

Not so cute..male damselflies actually clamp down on the female behind her head…like Homer Simpson choking out Bart..

65 Juno 09.26.08 at 7:24 pm

Hey, you know what they say. Sex is like money–the only ones who talk about it are the ones who don’t have enough.

66 Trabb's Boy 09.26.08 at 7:27 pm

Oh, Katherine! You HAD to go there. Here come the rants about the heartless photographer more interested in the cute picture than in rescuing the helpless animal in 3 … 2 … 1 …

67 Ms.McPantiesInABunchnuff 09.26.08 at 7:45 pm

……0!!

The heartless gutless photographer who wanted a cute pic instead of helping the poor damselfly in distress!! save her from the Homer Maneuver!!!Insensitive I tell you!! *shakes fist*

How was that? :D

68 Paleoprof 09.26.08 at 7:46 pm

well it *did*…

72 Lance 09.26.08 at 10:45 pm

Did anyone else notice they make a heart?

73 Theo 09.26.08 at 10:47 pm

I think that’s what NomTom is hinting at. Hinting *hard*.

74 Gillie 09.26.08 at 10:55 pm

NSFW!!!!

75 Kevin 09.26.08 at 10:58 pm

i took the photo, and i can promise the doubters that there are two damselflies in that pic. i saw them flying around, watched them, um, hook up, then fly away.

76 binky-mama 09.26.08 at 10:58 pm

Heavens!!! Think of the children!!! ;)

77 Jennie Mello 09.27.08 at 12:51 am

Monica the tiara chick-
I just looked at your link, and you designed the web site for the tiddy bear actor!!!??!!?!?!?! Why didn’t you speak up???You should be so proud! And all your other stuff is cool too! Congratulations!!!

78 Monica the tiara chick 09.27.08 at 5:04 am

Hey, Jennie Mello, thanks for the kind words! Yes, it’s all true, and boy is Actor Mike proud of the infamy of the Tiddy Bear. ;D

79 Vladimir 09.27.08 at 5:16 am

They (as in, Isabella Rosselini) already made that praying mantis movie (along with a few more):

“Money shot?” Why, NTMTOM, what on earth does that mean? *innocent wide-eyed blinks*

81 surfzone 09.27.08 at 7:41 am

@ Theo:

That was shot in Calldetenes, 70 km from Barcelona.

Thanks for putting it large, I wasn’t sure if that would be considered spam or not!

82 BarbaraL 09.27.08 at 1:12 pm

so wait. He puts the sperm into her neck???

83 CJ 09.27.08 at 4:59 pm

I’m kind of confused about the.. physics of this mateage. I see the obvy blue guy’s head but the grey.. and the other set of wings.. nngh. *tilts head* confused.

84 Lone Truth 09.27.08 at 11:04 pm

Woah, I just blew my wad. That’s some hot insect pr0n. How is this legal in the US???

85 CJ 09.28.08 at 5:03 am

Paleoprof – holy man! That is one complex boinking posish. I had a little trouble figuring out that diagram (I’m a law student, science is not my forte), but it looks like his genitalia are spread amongst his whole body?? Insane!

“Wheel position”. Teehee.

86 Totalee Puppy 09.28.08 at 11:19 am

Love Bugs! (sorry)

87 Alice 09.28.08 at 10:51 pm

It’s sad, though, because most female damsel flies are horribly mutilated by the mating process…

88 nottmi 09.30.08 at 5:23 am

TEH SECKS = TEH CUTE

combine this trend with the posting-humans trend for EPIC CO WIN

89 tsering 09.30.08 at 3:53 pm

alice is right.

when they’re connected like this, the male is mostly just making sure that no one else is going to have their way with this woman.

and his *apparatus* is covered in spikes in order to clear out any residue from any previous dudes who might have had this lady.

not so romantic… more like… abusive, controlling lover ftl.

90 Theo 10.02.08 at 12:45 pm

They’re insects, you know. Not people.
