And Now, Another Cute Olympics Update

by Not That Mike The Other Mike on August 21, 2008

BEIJING — In gymnastics today, the odds-on favored Hamstrovakian team took the gold in the Women’s Synchronized Dangling.  Pictured here, from top, are teammates Uvula Stolichnaya, Ivana Hugankissya and Olga Reallylongfunnynameski.

Yeah, prolly a fake, but who cares? WE LOVE EEEEET!

Our thanks to cute-porter Tabby for today’s update.

First comment!!!! Fantastic false Russian names!!!!!!!

Great postingk!!!

3 Katherine 08.21.08 at 9:10 pm

Oh… by the time I’d written my comment someone else had dashed in. I’ll never comment again :-(

4 Gail (the first one) 08.21.08 at 9:11 pm

Aw, Katherine, we can share!

5 Rebecca 08.21.08 at 9:12 pm

Adorable, but, unfortunately, very obviously photo-shopped. Take a very close look at the paws.

6 Theresa 08.21.08 at 9:13 pm

What is NTMTOM going to do when the ‘Lympics are over? He’s gonna have to take an interest in Russian ballet!

“Uvula”! [SNORT!]

7 heather_f 08.21.08 at 9:24 pm

Way to make fun of people’s names. It’s great to see NTMTOM show such respect for diversity.

8 AuntieMame 08.21.08 at 9:27 pm

Rebecca…read the roll-over text…

And NOMTOM, are you sure Olga Reallylongfunnynameski belongs on the that team? She sounds like she’s from a whole ‘nother country! Hee!

9 DumBunny 08.21.08 at 9:28 pm

Look real close, they’re all the same hammie.

10 SarahR 08.21.08 at 9:32 pm

Woo-hoo, Rebecca, don’t forget the hover text!

Some Photoshopaholics provide meritorious service to the Qte.

11 Dan 08.21.08 at 9:33 pm

LOL WUT

12 Erebella 08.21.08 at 9:39 pm

Nom Tom, I bow before your quirky creativity! This is the best one yet! And you know, DumBunny, I think you’re right. It’s still awesome, though.

13 scooterpants 08.21.08 at 9:41 pm

if it were not for making fun of each other.
my childhood would have been silent.
i’m so glad we did, and we still have a sense of humor.
i love the names! hilarious! GO NTMTOM!

14 Tugs 08.21.08 at 9:45 pm

That is not fake. My hamsters do that all the time. They are special flying hamsters so they do not weigh much and can dangle from just about anything.

15 Kari 08.21.08 at 9:47 pm

I didn’t think props were allowed in the Olympics!! They must be disqualified, which opens the door for the team from Rodentika to capture the gold. Those young ladies really deserve it, too. Silky Furballovich, Belinda “Pouches” Powschkovitz, and Natalia Hamstrovia have worked their tiny taillios off!!

16 Mel2 08.21.08 at 9:49 pm

She’s sayin’: Um, yeah, I hate to be a pest about this, but I’m pretty sure I asked for a yellow flower.

17 OlympicDork 08.21.08 at 9:59 pm

The Chinese ambassador immediately insisted that

1) the photo was not edited, and

2) all hamsters were at least 16 years old

18 Katrina 08.21.08 at 9:59 pm

I have the strange compulsion to ululate-lalalalaalallaallalala.

19 Jorden 08.21.08 at 10:03 pm

Now that’s teamwork!

20 Mary (the first) 08.21.08 at 10:17 pm

This is just too moishe!! Photo shopped or not, who cares. As for the names, love them!

21 momof2kitties 08.21.08 at 10:34 pm

Is this the newest rotation in the Olympic rhythymic gymnastics competition? Ball, hoop, rope, ribbon and flower?

Go Hamstrovakia!! woo! woo! woo!

I was watching some of that today. I am a former (Really Former) youth gymnast and even to me those girls seemed freaky flexible. Yipes!!!

22 Mary 08.21.08 at 10:51 pm

Unfortunately, Tugs, that is fake. There’s no such thing as a “flying hamster” as they are burrowing animals, not flight animals. What you are looking at are Syrian hamsters, a very common breed. They will climb and sometimes dangle, though usually off of cage wiring or food hanging from a cage.

23 eikoleigh 08.21.08 at 10:52 pm

Cute photoshop concept

OlympicDork – LOL your comments

24 Loris 08.21.08 at 10:53 pm

Hello, British Airways? I would like one one-way plane ticket to Hamstrovakia, please. No, no, Hamstrovakia. H-A-M-S…oh, really? How much? Hmm. Well, alright, just send me to Roborowski Airport in Powchevania, then, I’ll get the train from there.

25 snoopysnake 08.21.08 at 10:56 pm

They swept the podium on the individuals, too. You should see them wearing their medals.

26 catloveschanel 08.21.08 at 11:16 pm

[judges looking down over 1/2 glasses from Walgreens] way to go Uv, Liv and Olg. Unfortunately, you are from …. Hamstrovakia …. AND your act is a little too artistic, so we have to take away your gold and give it to China!!!!

Seriously, this should go in synchronized air swimming. The art, the grace, the style….

27 Linda H. 08.21.08 at 11:28 pm

Sweet.

28 emily 08.21.08 at 11:37 pm

Looks like the “Hang In There” cat has handed the torch to these mofos.

29 skye 08.22.08 at 12:28 am

kwait– I don’t understand the first name: Uvula Stolichnaya?? Other than that, love it! Dangling rodents rock.

30 Maggie 08.22.08 at 12:39 am

Yeah, I dunno. It seems surprisingly unsavory to make fun of “funny” foreign names, entirely made up or not.

I don’t want to be a humourless shrew (aww, shrew!), but that was honestly my first thought too.

Next time you can pick some Chinese-sounding names! Those are always funny!

31 berthaservant 08.22.08 at 12:54 am

This is weird. I saw this photo and the zebra one somewhere within the past couple of days — same place — but I can’t remember where. And this is like the only cute website I visit. Deja vooooo.

32 CoffeeCup 08.22.08 at 12:56 am

Maggie:

As a Chinese person, I’m not exactly thrilled by your suggestion for substitute names, and if one takes offense to made up Russian names, one should take offense to made up names that mock any nationality. With that said, I wouldn’t particularly be offended if the hamsters were Chinese, rather than Russian, but I don’t appreciate the suggestion that Chinese names are “always funny” as if Chinese people are always a good standby to poke fun at.

33 Daphne Moss 08.22.08 at 12:56 am

Photoshop or not, an adorable photo! ;-)

34 Elanor 08.22.08 at 1:09 am

Maggie, that wasn’t very nice of you. Ouch. :-(

35 binky-mama 08.22.08 at 2:06 am

Umm……excuse me but WHERE are the barrettes?! And the hair sparkles? These must be rookies…but a perfect 10 for cute factor!

36 uncomplicatedly 08.22.08 at 2:20 am

guys, I’m pretty sure Maggie meant her comment about Chinese names as sarcasm. I don’t think she was suggesting them as a legitimate, less offensive alternative.

37 Elaine E 08.22.08 at 2:33 am

You said uvula. Heh. Heh.

38 KendraPT 08.22.08 at 2:36 am

Cute! But totally photoshopped…well photoshopped, but still…is there no integrity in the Olympics anymore? Just kidding!!! Very cute.

39 Mrs. Door(belphebe) 08.22.08 at 2:44 am

I’m surprised people complain about the pseudo-Russian names but no one seems overly offended about all the pseudo-Scottish names on Cute Overload.
McSquirmersons: http://mfrost.typepad.com/cute_overload/2008/06/stubbular-unfoc.html
Eddie McBlobbles: http://mfrost.typepad.com/cute_overload/2007/09/mr-google-e-mcb.html

I think those hamsters deserved their gold medal! Way to go!

40 Jupiter Star 08.22.08 at 2:48 am

It’s…it’s too moishe! I cannot takes it! The dangling! The pawsees! THE FLOWER!

Thank goodness for photoshop! ^_^.

41 maijasservant 08.22.08 at 3:04 am

I am certain that this image would never appear on NBC — methinks it is some behind-the scenes romance; the top ham is the hapless Christiaham, center is Cyrhamo (ever faithful wing-ham), and at the bottom we see the lovely Roxham. Wonder how the story ends…?

42 rabble 08.22.08 at 3:15 am

for a really good explanation of the word uvula go here: http://www.cartoonistgroup.com/store/add.php?iid=8322

as a Scottish-Ukrainian-Canadian i fully endorse the use of funny made up names, but i would like to clarify that McSquirmersons is actually Irish; the Scottish spelling would be MacSquirmersons. :P

43 blue-kun 08.22.08 at 3:26 am

I don’t care if it’s ’shopped…

Just…

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww <3

44 J. Bo 08.22.08 at 4:09 am

Oh, COME ON, guys. Half the fun of the Olympics is making fun of names we can’t pronounce. You think other countries aren’t falling down laughing over OUR names that are unpronounceable to THEM?

And let’s not forget the (cute) Robot Olympics from “Futurama”: [Bender singing] “Hail, hail Robonia, a land I DIDN’T MAKE UP.”

45 Laura 08.22.08 at 4:11 am

I don’t care if it’s photoshopped either. LOL. It’s pretty darn cute. :)

46 David 08.22.08 at 4:30 am

Oof, Katherine was out-touched by the appropriately named Gail (the first one).

47 Monique 08.22.08 at 4:55 am

CofeeCup and Elanor,

Maggie was joking, you can tell because she called making fun of names “unsavory.”

I would have liked this more if it was more believable. Like if it was just one hamster hanging with the flower, I could have suspended disbelief and appreciated the cuteness without annoyance that the paws overlapped and the grass wasn’t bending right. The PhotoShop Disasters website has spoiled me!

48 Ginger 08.22.08 at 5:49 am

I love hammies! This photo is so cute. I’m kind of insulted that no-one uses silly / cute made-up Welsh names ;) How about Hamyth Hamphries or Fluffi Jones or something!

49 warrior rabbit 08.22.08 at 5:59 am

As an Italian-American, I hereby approve of any and all Italian name jokes (especially in the name of diversity — why should the Russians and Irish have all the fun?), a la the one about the Italian sports car, Ronzoni Downhill.

50 Brandi 08.22.08 at 6:33 am

While part of me says, yes, it could be rather un-PC and offensive to make up names, but it’s really about how you choose to take it. Do I think that any offense is meant to Russian people, certainly not. And I agree with the comment that they probably think American names are weird, and probably ugly and dull sounding.

I don’t care if it’s photoshopped. It’s still really stinking cute. I like.

51 Hon Glad 08.22.08 at 6:47 am

A Tail Of Urequited Luff.

Patrick Fitz Michael and Michael Fitz Patrick attempt to deliver a love token to Tanya Arse the well know Russian Athlete and Vole strangler.
“Vot the hell is eet, wit da crappy flower” she was heard to utter. ” Brink me a dooble Cheesburger unt fries, vis a side order of der T-bone steak, und mebee, vi can talk, my leetle melon ball”.
A forlorn Patrick was later seen in Mo’s bar, looking somewhat worse for wear…Sigh. As Maria Ouspenskya said “The path you vorked vos stony, through no fault of your own, and stuff like zat, kiddo”

52 starling 08.22.08 at 7:16 am

I luf silly made-up international names! I think being politically correct is highly overrated.

Dutch/German joke:

What do you call a Chinese thief? Lang Ving. (long fingers)
What do you call a Chinese policeman? Lang Ving Vang. (long fingers catch)

Thank you, I’ll be here all week.

53 xyz 08.22.08 at 9:00 am

:)

54 Hila 08.22.08 at 10:33 am

OK, this one definitely goes to my “Top 10 Favorite CO Posts Ever” list :)

And – Starling and xyz, both of you – LOL! :D

55 Katrina 08.22.08 at 10:54 am

Having a name that was widely made-fun-of in the 60’s elementary school scene, and now taken up by the worst God-Awful American storm in US history, I can comment.

I think that making up names if funny. Stolichnaya is a brand of Vodka, ‘uvula’, as has been demonstrated (so well), is the globby thing in the back of our throats. Put the two together they are hilarious, to me.

Putting people down isn’t funny, but, man, a good weird juxstaposition will make me chuckle any day. These are comedy characters, not names of real people- and if there is someone out there with the first name of ‘uvula’, well she/he needs a very good laugh every damned day in the English-speaking portion of the world.

Hang in there, Uvula!

56 Khadija 08.22.08 at 11:05 am

NTM TOM you’ve done it AGAIN!!

57 Hon Glad 08.22.08 at 11:28 am

Its shows my dirty mind but I read uvula as your Vulva. Blushes with embarrassment. Not.

58 JFS in IL 08.22.08 at 12:00 pm

Photoshop is cheating!!!!!

59 vanessa 08.22.08 at 2:09 pm

Cute.. and I wish this was PHOTOSHOP! but IT’S NOT! Look closer at the paws. You can actually see that the two are tied together with clear string/ fishing lines… the one is tied to the branch, the other has the flower tied to his hand.. This makes me kind of sad because they are probably in pain and terrified!

60 Gail (the first one) 08.22.08 at 2:18 pm

@Hon Glad: “Vole strangler Tanya Arse”—-ROFL!!!!

Okay, miscellaneous Olympic complaint about the TV coverage:

Way, WAY too much Beach Volleyball!! Does anybody really care about Beach Volleyball, especially Women’s?! Do you menfolk here really enjoy it? It seems like a lot of adjusting wayward bikini bottoms (unintentional SpongeBob reference—LOL).

61 starling 08.22.08 at 2:19 pm

It’s the same hampster three times, Vanessa. Don’t be a silleh goil!

62 Slav 08.22.08 at 2:53 pm

as a slavic-american with a reallylongfunnynameski, i am not offended in the slightest. lighten up people!

63 Katrina 08.22.08 at 3:11 pm

Please- don’t anyone delude him or herself, this is a pure fabrication, it is photoshopped and it isn’t real.

No ham was hurt in the making of this funny-haha.

Hon Glad- no. (!) We went there some months ago, just no!
Most respectfully submitted,
etc.

64 Rachel 08.22.08 at 3:25 pm

This photo has haunted me ever since I saw it here yesterday. I know, some of you say it’s photo shopped, and it very well may be. But that doesn’t stop me from thinking about it so much that I couldn’t even fall asleep last night! I mean, really. Why would you photoshop a hamster holding a flower? Who does that? Why must they torture me with this redonkulesmess?

65 warrior rabbit 08.22.08 at 3:56 pm

“Hang in there, Uvula!”

That seriously made me crack up.

66 warrior rabbit 08.22.08 at 3:58 pm

“Hon Glad- no. (!) We went there some months ago, just no!”

When was that, Katrina? Was it with…lip curtains?
http://mfrost.typepad.com/cute_overload/2008/03/delectabuhl-kit.html

67 Brian 08.22.08 at 4:53 pm

Yeah, its definately a fake. Hamsters can never be this coordinated. They’d be all fighting over who gets to stuff the flower in their powshe first, and then be running around trying to find a wall to run along.
Hammies = cute, but dumb. Lordy, so very dumb. And I love hammies. But the stupid…

68 Brian 08.22.08 at 5:00 pm

Maggie – eh, we used to do that with hockey names all the time.

“Wakmiov passes to Jacmiov. Jacmiov over to Blomiov. Blomiov shoots AND SCORES! Oh, Blomiov came through for the Russians, and blasted one right into the face of the opposing goalie, and through his stiff defense.”
“Yeah Jim, that one really blew up in the face of the Americans, who look like they just took a shot in the eye. Stiff penetration of the Americans led to a big one-timer through the rear of the American defense. No resistance at all.”

69 liiiting 08.22.08 at 5:03 pm

Awww. it’s photoshopped? I can’t believe I actually seen this picture so many times and go ga-ga over it. Now it sort of lost it magic lo~ Anyway, i still love hamsters tho!~ XD

70 scooterpants 08.22.08 at 5:22 pm

vanessa.
you MADE me look for fishing line.
GAHHHH! that makes me mad.

71 warrior rabbit 08.22.08 at 5:41 pm

@Brian, total lol!
@Vanessa, caretroll ftw!

72 Mikeyfur 08.22.08 at 5:45 pm

Of course it’s photoshopped. And a darn good job! Very, very cute. .

73 ButtaRumCake 08.22.08 at 6:16 pm

@Brian I am over here screaming LOLOL!!!

74 Martha in Washington 08.22.08 at 6:43 pm

Brian –you guys are just sick. I like that in a person!

I was thinking of changing my often-mispronounced last name to Reallylongfunnynameski but now I can’t cause NTMTOM stole it!!!

Gymnastic Hammies are adorable BTW.

75 Juno 08.22.08 at 7:31 pm

Yikes. Anyone offended by made-up names should never, ever listen to Car Talk. But then, anyone that easily offended would would turn off the radio in a huff long before they got to the end of the hour, when Ray reads their list of “staff,” which has included Pikup Andropov, Zbigniew Chrysler, Slowmedown Milosovic, Bela Cartok, George Stayontopofthis, Notyetyouyahoo, and many more.

76 sera 08.22.08 at 7:36 pm

Uvula Stolichnaya!

*is ded from laffing*

77 Juno 08.22.08 at 7:40 pm

. . . and Pepe LePew would be right out!

78 sera 08.22.08 at 7:47 pm

Uvula Stolichnaya!

*is ded from laffing*

79 warrior rabbit 08.22.08 at 7:47 pm

Juno, don’t forget the barristers — Dewey, Cheatham, and Howe. Not so much made-up as accurate, though.

I love Car Talk. Who would have ever thought that a call-in show about car problems would be so all-encompassing and hilarious.

80 J. Bo 08.23.08 at 1:17 am

My favorite is their statistician, Marge Innovera. Also, the organizer of their working mothers’ support group, Erasmus B. Dragon.

81 Subhangi 08.23.08 at 9:07 am

Oh come on people, lighten up! There’s plenty of fun to be had in laughing at other people’s names (totally LMAO @ “reallylongfunnynameski”.) Laugh, and expect to be laughed back at – it’s a way of cultural appreciation and it’s all good.

Signed,

Miss 11syllablenameski. ;)

82 Brian 08.23.08 at 12:42 pm

Hey my last name is “Crocker”, and my first name begins with a B. Just to head off the inevitable questions, when I step into a classroom (especially Jr High) I always say “My name is Mr Crocker, and no, my wife isn’t named Betty, nor are any of my family members named Betty, and my name certainly isn’t Betty. Also, please remember that first R – its the most important letter in there.”

83 warrior rabbit 08.23.08 at 3:32 pm

Yeah, otherwise it would be Bian. :) I keed, I keed.

I wonder if Joe Cocker suffered. He probably did. There were some kids at my high school whose last name was Penix. I always felt bad for them. And I worked with a woman named Assman. Hee.

84 Katrina 08.23.08 at 7:01 pm

Thank you, Warrior Rabbit, (in my best Irish Soap Commercial accent) “And I liked it tooo!”

No three hamsters are going to stretch out and form a hamsterchain. “Hamsters arent’ organized!” (From Chicken Run, with apologies)
They don’t think like that, if at all. But it is a very cute anthropomorphizing thought. (giving animals people qualities-something we do here ALLLLLL de time.)

Hrm. My last name is a McName. Should I be offended by all the Fluffy McHamsterson-type names given to pets on this site?

I’ll answer that for you: NO. Because it’s all silly fun.
