A Cautionary Tail

My friends, ours is a generation that accepts what it sees because it has seen it all.  Scientists explore the moon and Mars; images and sounds span continents in seconds; tiny robots vacuum our floors and startle our kitties.  It is the end of Magic.  There is nothing left to astonish us.

Dum de dum, loo de doo ... oh, hello there!

And so if, by some odd chance, you should find yourself in a forest alone, and you should encounter a squirrel with a coconut on its head, you might consider it nothing more than a mild diversion, placed there for your amusement.  But take heed, my friend:  If that squirrel should notice you, raise the coconut from its head, and begin to sing …

Hello, my baby / Hello, my honey / Hello, my ragtime gal / Send me your kiss by wire / Honey, my heart’s on fire / If you refuse me / Honey, you’ll lose me / Then you’ll be left alone / So, baby, telephone / And tell me I’m your own…

… put the damn thing back in the box and run like hell!  You don’t wanna end up like this sucker, do you?

You're having visions of dollar signs, aren't you? That's how it starts.

Tell me you didn’t rent a theater already, Vanessa B.

I knew squirrels liked nuts, but coco-nuts? How cuuute.

  2. are you suggesting coconuts migrate?

  3. LMAO!! Thanks NTMTOM, that’s my 2nd fav WB cartoon.

*sas becomes very wary of the squirrels in her back yard

(if you were curious, my fav is transylvania 6-5000

  4. smokeyJoe says:

i think CO has entered the realm of the unwell. or perhaps surreal.

  5. berthaservant says:

I’m calling “bleenshopped,” but it doesn’t matter because NTMTOM went 1910s on us.

I look forward to the “Jeepers Creepers” post, NTMTOM.

  7. Ok, I love “One Froggy Evening” like the rest of us WB cartoon fanatics, but how can you not mention the equally classic “Much Ado about Nutting”?

Immediately thought of this cartoon upon seeing the first pic!

  8. P. Erasmus says:

It’s not photoshopped. They hung the coconut with some fishing line, so the squirrel would have an interesting time trying to eat it.

  9. Esther Sassaman says:

I bet his belleh is incredibly soft!

Big cute kudos to whoever had the genius notion to give a squirrel a coconut!

  10. scruffylove says:

    Michigan J. Squirrel!!!

  11. Not That Mike The Other Mike says:

@Chanpon: Good call; I had forgotten that cartoon, so thanks for the link. When I saw picture three, all I could think of was “top hat,” and so “One Froggy Evening” became inevitable at that point. 🙂

  12. Ai wantz tu attind teh matunay. Kan ai buyz tew tikkutz pliiz?

  13. There is no way a squirrel can ‘palm’ an coconut shell.

Golden or NTKTOK-how are things going?

  14. I’m glad someone mentioned Much Ado About Nutting. Interestingly, like One Froggy Evening both seem to have parable-like elements about the folly of greed (and in the case of Much Ado, stubbornness as well).

  15. aawwwww, michigan rag! i love that song, and that cartoon, and this squirrel. :]

  16. Much Ado could also be saying something about perserverance, no? (can’t spell that….)

  17. And here I thought you HAD to be linking to this scene from Spaceballs (a little gross at the beginning, just a warning):

One of my favorite scenes… 🙂 The whole scene can be found here:

  18. LOL that much ado about nutting… I am old And I do not think I have ever seen that classic. so apropo to this post!

  19. ha-cha-cha-cha-chaaa…

  20. Chanpon, you RAWK! I have been looking for that cartoon for ever and ever – it’s my favorite, and I never knew the title. I think it’s what started my love of squirls. 🙂 Thank you so much for linking to it.

  21. scooterpants says:

yep. the ‘fancy rats’ are ALL OVER my backyard, hiding stuff and diggin and carrying nuts and crap all over. they are the devils spawn. bye bye walnuts, so long filberts, they even like the figs.. (i’m saying goo-bye to my nuts) darn lil nibblers!

  22. I thought of Atlas when I saw this picture. You know, the guy in Greek mythology that was so strong he held up the Earth. 😀

  23. Tak, the Hideous New Girl says:

    Re the last picture.

I see an internet meme in the making.

  24. That is the single greatest thing I have EVER seen in my life.
Made my crappy day a lot less crappier!!

  25. You put the lime in de coconut and drink it right up!

  26. eikoleigh says:

  27. Balamuthia says:

This has got to be my favorite thing I’ve seen here.

    So awesome.

  28. CoffeeCup says:

Wow. Just when I thought I had seen so much on CO… squirrel holding a coconut. Whether it’s tethered on a string (I agree, squirrly cannot palm a coconut like Shaq) or that really is body building Arnold Schwartzenutter, I think it’s absolutely awesome. And the commentary by Nom Tom is equally as awesometasticallygoodness.

I’ve had a long day, a good amount of caffeine, and one of my best friends just got married, so whooo!

  29. Totalee Puppy says:

KATRINA–I left you a message at the end of “Gentlemen We Have
a Situation”…the second of two messages. Thanks, friend…
PJ–Love the lime in de coconut!
    Mr.Coconut Head–You are the cutest-looking entertainer since Maurice Chevalier…

  30. @cheryl:

Well, a swallow could have carried it!

  31. “I’m puttin on my coconut
    Mussing up my front fur
    Polishing my nails”.

  32. LOL! Silly Sqwerl.

  33. @shadyman:
Wait a minute! Supposing two swallows carried it together?

  34. It’s not where he holds it, it’s a simple case of weight ratios……

  35. saucy bernaise says:

    @Karen – I bwaaahahaha’d at “jazz hands” for 15 minutes!!!

  36. But it depends what kind of swallow it is, doesn’t it?

That said, Mike, that was one of the funniest captions so far! Good work.

  37. Totalee Puppy says:

Y’know what…Remember the talking & singing candlestick in Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast”? His fun musical number for Belle called “Be Our Guest”? What do you think? Coconut squirrel’s Big Number…

  38. “A European swallow or an African swallow?”

    “I don’t know that–WAAAAAAGGHH!!!!”

  39. (the original) Mel says:

@Hon Glad: Luv the Top Hat ref.

My fave Bugs Bunny is The Rabbit of Seville.

  40. (the original) Mel says:

Oh wait, I lied, it’s What’s Opera Doc. The one that spawned “Kill the Wabbit.”

  41. (the original) Mel-
    I sing….
    “You’re so woovewy”
    and you respond….
    “yes, I can’t help it!”

The horse, as it galumphs down the hill always makes me giggle.

“With my magic helmet…” thanks for the veeery long earworm, I’m set for the day! (goes off humming happily)

  42. Cheryl, Shadyman, and Juno – thanks, that’s where I was headed too! Holy Grail is one of my all time favorite movies.

My sister has a squirrel “bungee jump” in her backyard, a dry corn cob attached to an elastic cord hung from a btanch. It’s hilarious and adorable. In the meantime, I definitely want to stick my nose in this little squirrel’s belly!!

  43. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

10 points to the person who gets this right!

  44. Ermine: A fish.

(At least, that’s the way I heard it.)

  45. Got to be your best one yet NTMTOM!
I think I would run for the hills if I encountered a singing squirrel.

  46. I can see his pee pee.

  47. as long as they don’t try giving me in-flight magazines we’re ok.^v^

  48. AMY:My sister has a squirrel “bungee jump” in her backyard.
I’m falling off my chair lol just picturing it in my head.
How about making a video for us.
hello my baby hello my honey
can’t get this tune outta my head now

  49. OT-does any one remember the black and white cartoon of a cat trying to get his owners attention. She is yakking on the phone while the cat is trying to get her to notice him while trying also to open the can himself. I saw it on Sesame Street show back in the 1980’s.I would love to find it again as it was a favorite of our family’s. Thanks:)

  50. Alexa, I’m your Sesame Street gal, here ya go:

Fab cartoon, you have great taste 🙂 And a belated thanks to chanpon for “Much Ado About Nutting”, wonderful memories for me there. Squirrels and C.O. rock!
