Ye Olde Quteness

by Meg on August 28, 2008

It’s Circa 1925, People, and Thee Quteness is alive and well, according to Shorpy.com.

Just like this century, fine folks bottle-fed their piglets.

Oh, and took them for walkies.

Lath and plaster bleeny snacks! I love how the chauffeur is standing by holding the piggy’s bottie ready for Madame.

Cute peegy!

As to its hooMom – Let the nuffs begin!

3 summie 08.28.08 at 12:23 pm

Am I wrong, or does this peeg have a gem studded harness?

4 Gillie 08.28.08 at 12:25 pm

peegwalkies!!

awwwwww!

The pet store in our mall has piggies. I could hover over their cages and listen to their sweet baby peeg grunting noises all day.

I don’t think they’d get along so well with the cats though.

Hamlet strolls the hamlet.

6 Lurker 08.28.08 at 12:37 pm

Love, love Shorpy.

I’m also rather fond of this Mr. McOinkerson.

7 Gail (the first one) 08.28.08 at 1:10 pm

I looove these pics!!!

Lady Prunella Bassington: “Why, Henry!! You’re eating like a pig!!”

Chauffeur: “Well, yes, Miss. After all, he IS a pig.”

Lady Prunella: “Oh, quite right! I’d forgotten.”

8 jenna 08.28.08 at 1:12 pm

love this picture- :)

9 katiedid 08.28.08 at 1:13 pm

I love the little harness!!! So cute!!

10 Barbara 08.28.08 at 1:20 pm

Everything about these pictures is absolutely perfect :-D

11 Pussytoes 08.28.08 at 1:25 pm

Peeeg lofs his meelks.

12 bboss 08.28.08 at 1:27 pm

I just discovered Shorpy and I love it! This is not typical of some of the sad pictures of people. Can you say “eccentric rich”.

13 Kris 08.28.08 at 1:31 pm

Richy McPiggersons looks quite happy! Clearly, having pigs for pets is not a new phenomenon! Adorable!

14 Hon Glad 08.28.08 at 1:35 pm

We see pictured; Lady Evadne Kneetrembler Fitzwillmington Hypotherneuse, feeding her pet pig arthur, “He reminds me of my dear departed Husband Arthur, only his manners are better”.

15 Theo 08.28.08 at 1:38 pm

And if you’re not a pig person…

This one is just begging for another one of Berthaservant’s breeliant novellas!

I await…

17 Susanna 08.28.08 at 2:03 pm

OMG, I want one. :) So cute!

18 DKN 08.28.08 at 2:21 pm

I really hope Aubrey sees this.

19 marie 08.28.08 at 2:36 pm

How ironic, she’s feeding and caring for an innocent baby piglet while wearing another innocent animal on her back that probably was skinned alive.

strange crazy world.

[Not a lot of vegetarians about in 1925 either. Over it yet? - Ed.]

20 Fegli 08.28.08 at 2:36 pm

And while I kinda want to nuff about the lady’s fur coat, I just can’t! This McPiggerson is tooooo adorable.

Love the (eyepatch clad?) guard/army dude type holding the piggy’s bottle.

21 Courtney 08.28.08 at 3:08 pm

Awww, baby vintage piggie.

I’m really digging that woman’s hat, too!

22 wagthedogma 08.28.08 at 3:19 pm

LOL @Hon Glad! :D

23 (the original) Mel 08.28.08 at 3:27 pm

That chauffer, forever holding a pig’s bottle. Captured on film. The way the world will remember him.

24 Katrina 08.28.08 at 3:37 pm

The nice lady is sharing her piggy with that nice man, oh, what? oh, never mind. Yes, very dignified, (the original Mel).

Lath and plaster bleeny snacks! Hmmm, sounds very tasty-can you share the recipe? Does it come in a wooden box for lunch, by any chance? Will it fit in a backpack? (harharhar)

25 Lurker 08.28.08 at 3:56 pm

I bet that pig does a mean Charleston.

26 Erebella 08.28.08 at 4:19 pm

Are you talking to me? Are you talking to me? They call me MISTER PIG!!!!! AAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!

27 mberkie0 08.28.08 at 4:21 pm

@Katrina: Lath&plaster bleeny snax are an ol’ family receipt complete with secret ingrejunts, ya know, the ones that I could tellya ’bout, but then I’d hafta do something nasty tewya, so we usually just leave’em out of the receipt and makeya guess.

28 Zanna 08.28.08 at 4:22 pm

OMG I *so* want that lady’s cloche hat.

But yeah, she should have been wearing one of the many plastic based faux fur or synthetic wool polar fleece winter coats that were widely available in the 20’s (rolls eyes)…

29 chanpon 08.28.08 at 5:32 pm

Is little piggy heading to the market?

30 AuntieMame 08.28.08 at 5:35 pm

I should have been born in the 20s. The no-boobs-no-butt look was all the rage back then…

*oink oink snort*

31 clairezilla 08.28.08 at 5:36 pm

oh lord. nuffing about about a nearly 100 year old fur coat? there are actual current things to get upset about–just ask around if you need a few.

32 jmuhj 08.28.08 at 6:17 pm

Well, Fegh, I CAN nuff about what this woman has on her back.

Anyway.

33 Barbara 08.28.08 at 6:58 pm

OK, well, I guess the ONE thing imperfect about the picture is the real fur coat…

…but I still love the picture!!!

34 warrior rabbit 08.28.08 at 7:47 pm

I don’t think he’s wearing an eyepatch. I think that’s just the shadow from the brim of his hat. Arrrrrgh, matey.

35 Vampy 08.28.08 at 9:24 pm

Let’s try to not apply modern mindsets on people from almost a hundred years ago, mmmmkay? Otherwise we would all hate and dispise generations past. You can hate on the damned coat all you want, but try to grasp the whole historical perspective thing? As in, it’s bloody pointless to whine about it now. Pointless and more than a little stupid.

36 alexandra 08.28.08 at 10:18 pm

Is that a sexy nazi? I looooove them. Cuddly piggy and SS sexy boy cuddling!!! ooooohhh yum.

37 Vampy 08.28.08 at 10:57 pm

It’s a chauffer. There were no Nazis in 1925, especially not in Washington DC, where the photo was taken, in 1925.

38 warrior rabbit 08.28.08 at 11:05 pm

Vampy, if she thinks Nazis are sexy, then I say good luck getting her to recognize the anachronistic (or geographic) flaws in her post. Uphill struggle.

39 Vampy 08.28.08 at 11:11 pm

I’m only hoping that the sexy nazi comment was sarcasm.

40 binky-mama 08.29.08 at 12:03 am

I think it’s the cats pajamas!!!

And I love the chauffeur, he’s all “Grumble, grumble…”

41 Corona 08.29.08 at 12:09 am

I love pics from this period. Everything in the pics bring up mystery. The time of year. The fog. What that path looks like in Summer. The courteous tendant. The notoriety of the piglet. The immense mansion. The bodacious honker on that woman. All good.

42 Hon Glad 08.29.08 at 7:17 am

Corona: I hadn’t noticed her bodacious honker :} your right, and her plates (plates of meat=feet) are on the largish side.

43 Barbarella von Fluffenstein 08.29.08 at 9:43 am

Mmmh, it´s the fur coat that bothers me too…. I´m sure they didn´t have fake fur coats back in 1925 so surely that must be real…

Mmmmh.

44 cat among the pidgeons 08.29.08 at 11:09 am

Erm, does anyone else thing that photo’s slightly dogdy? It’s awfully clear and crisp for something taken 90 years ago…

45 Momcat 08.29.08 at 12:45 pm

I’m kinda with you, cat among. Do those look like 1920’s shoes? I dunno, not an expert. I am, however, a little taken with the price tag still on McPiggerson’s leash. How gauche!

46 Vampy 08.29.08 at 1:58 pm

Well, for a start, not all old photographs are damaged. My family has several old photos from the late 19th and early 20th centuries that are in perfect condition. Those that do have damage on them get scanned and corrected/cleaned up.

As for the footwear, the shoes look quite period to me. Not all women then wore the fancy small heeled mary jane type shoes that one sees in fashion plates, that was hardly the only style of footwear. Just like not all women today wear 4 inch heels or Ugs or whatever other high fashion shoes one sees in fashion photos nowadays. The woman in the photo doesn’t look like she’s dressed up to go party, so why would she be wearing what are essentially the dancing shoes?

47 Katrina 08.29.08 at 2:06 pm

mberkie0- as this is Cute Overload, I won’t be needing Nasty things, thanks. I’ll just make up a batch of Old Mother Katrina’s finest, um, biscuits, that’s it, warm, fresh from the oven, so light and airy with butter dripping off them, and oh, look there are more over there, yes, by God, they have cheese in them with light herbs and oh, look, more butter dripping off them. No, no you don’t have to eat the whole thing, dear, just let me get you a piece of fresh chocolate CAKE that I just frosted and decorated with YOUR NAME ON IT.
(Mess with me, huh? I’ll make you talk! No-sir-eeeee-I’ll get that recipe if it ki….wait a minute…) that was the point, wasn’t it? (Flern), grumble, grumble, teeth nashing…

Vampy, I don’t understand your logic. Should we not try to understand what led to oppression of women or slavery or other things in the past we’d rather not see repeated? Just because something is long over doesn’t mean it should be forgotten or forgiven… or that it is pointless to think about it. We should try to learn from the past, no?
