Was it stolen? Removed by a mini bird plastic surgeon? Batted off by a smooshed-face cat!? Whatever happened, we need to get to the bottom [<--Heh] of this!

Judging by the darkness under the eyes it’s had quite a night on the millet. I don’t know about a Bearded Tit but I feel a right tit.
JIMWICh: Et Brilliante.
Its a bearded tit, my favourite bird ever. They usually have a long tail so i’m not sure what happened to this little guy. he is like a chubblar alice cooper. if you like tiny round birds check out the Goldcrest!
Ohmigosh… do y’all always have your minds in the gutter? The posts today are reminding me of my best friends. And, cute bird. Very cute. Tail was probably bitten off–gives a whole new meaning to “Missed by a hair”. Missed by a feather? I think so.
I am fostering four kittens while they are sick. One is white with a blue and a green eye and zero tailage, an all black and a swirly tabby have one inch stump tails, and another swirly tabby has a real tail (I call him “Tail”). They are SOOOOO cute. Of course the disfigurement makes them cuter. Though my bf thinks it’s gross, so maybe that’s a motherly instinct?
Well, I might as well come clean… (Blush) Me took the wittle tail because, see, the boid was too cute and I wanted the boid so mush. But it didn’t want to stay and tried to fly away. I held on to the feathers of its tail but he, plump wittle boid, flew away anyhow. So, I got the feathers, there… but I doubt we can glue it back on again. I really sorry, really!
kara
one of the parents of your fosters probably had some manx in their blood way way back. so you have manxes! extra special kittehs indeed.
of course you know to watch the completely tail-less one closely, sometimes no tail at all is really bad.
best of luck and good for you for fostering!
@JIMWICh: LOL!!! That was great!!
@kara: Good luck with your foster babehs!!! Of the 10 I had in Philly, one was blind in one eye (infection)and I was afraid no one would adopt her. So Helen came home with me!
Whatever it’s called-Reedling, Tit or Parrotbill (I personally like Reedling best) it is gorgeous! I would love to add this one to my life list!
Heather–here (the US) they are called Golden-Crowned Kinglets. I’ve had them in my yard. BTW there are also Ruby-Crowned Kinglets that are just as tiny and pretty.
I’ve seen tailless birds before (which I’ve always attributed to slow cats) and they seem to fly okay.
This bird is cute not just because of his taillessness, but because of his roundedness. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one quite like that before. The lack of a tail does make him seem more round though. LOL
Martha – the Golden-crowned Kinglet and the Goldcrest are related, but not the same species. The Kinglet (Regulus satrapa) is endemic to North America, and the Goldcrest (Regulus regulus) to Europe and Asia. They’re both frikkin’adorable though!
As is this guy. I hope his tail feathers grow back soon. They’re important for flying.
Bearded Reedling would be my guess… not that I’ve ever seen either species, but from pictures I’ve seen, Parrotbills have “messier” face markings. And, well, parrot bills.
As for his tail– I wouldn’t worry, one of the reasons birds have long tails is so that predators can grab the tail when they mean to grab the bird. It’s like certain lizards– it’s supposed to come off. He might fly a little awkwardly until it grows back, but long tails aren’t necessary for flight; the Bateleur Eagle is a very acrobatic flier despite having hardly any tail.
So I think we can enjoy this little guy’s cuteness with a clean conscience : )
I can’t get the title which became a song out of my head – oh where oh where did my tail go………. That is one of the cutest birds I’ve seen, and even beats the baby robin with his grumpy old man expression I rescued last year. never mind my own finches and parakeet provide much entertainment to me daily.
heh
I am forced to admit that one can live well without a tail. Mind you….
Cute boid!
What kind of adorable bird is this???
oh oh oh where can I get one of these?
his roundulousness is so cute!
aww, feathery potato
Looks like an egg–with a beak. Maybe he just kept his original shape!
it is a Bearded Reedling, Panurus biarmicus.
OMG Qte fur burrdz. Well, I’ll be dipped.
I think it’s called a Bearded Parrotbill.

I love birds!
I love this picture!
He needs to go to a re-tail establishment.
Perhaps indeed a bearded tit!

I think this isn’t the first time tits have been featured on CO.

What a gorgeous little bird! And I especially love the teeny tiny tailio!!!
Good work, Meg!
Could it be he’s a juvenile whose adult tail feathers are still coming in? Wings aside, he looks so fluffy!
Definitely an unfortunate Bearded Reedling (aka Tit aka Parrotbill).

Cuter because of disfigurement.
How sad!
JimWich, very cute.
And yep, it’s a bearded Tit.
Musta had a close call with a predator!
Here it is WITH tailio.

Yeah, call the CUTE cops! OMG! I can’t stand it!

JIMWICh: Et Brilliante.
Dude; that’s not his tail. It’s part of his wing. Argue all you want, but I am correct.
I had no idea birds could be so cute without a tail!
I mean, I knew birds could be cute. But bird – tail = super cute.
It seems they do come with tails:

The plot thickens…

here a goldcrest, tiniest songbird in the UK! http://www.arthurgrosset.com/europebirds/photos/regreg8572.jpg
Thanx for the earworm, jimwich!
This birdie is beautiful and spherical.
I want to give the poor little thing a tissue. It’s so upset about it’s tail that it’s crying and letting its mascara run.
are two bearded tits called a rack?

Wonder if he is coming off a molt??? Sparrows and starlings both lose tails periodically-

Good for you, Kara. What a nice thing to do! Those kittehs are lucky to have you. It sounds like you’re worth much more than a tail!

Where’s Birdchick – she would know!
Peoples, he is a little sensitive about this, but the rumour is that he lost his tail playing craps in Vegas over the weekend.
Another rumour is that he is the famous but hard-to-spot “Corgi Bearded Tit.” He even has the tri-coloring of some Corgis.

SQUEEEEEEE! Wookit the widdle round birdie!
Remarkable bird… lovely plumage!
I always thought birdies needed their tails for a rudder, like airplanes do. Does this mean that this little bird only flies around in circles?!!
Well, the bird is simply adorabuhls… plus the delicate coloring is simply dahling!!!
Here’s a mug-shot and some other vital stats:

This is actually the new SmartBird from Europe.Gets much better fuel economy. You’ll be seeing more of them in the months to come.
Sounds like a case for Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law.
Pheas, you slay me.
Birdy needs some re-tail therapy.
Hey, folks, rounded bottoms are supposed to be sexy!
…my personal thanks to the commenters from the
“Re-Tail” and “Smart Bird” gas economy Departments. Much joy was received & thoroughly enjoyed.
And there was much rejoicing (“Yay! “Hurray!”)
From the Monty Python & the Holy Grail Jokes Department
I thought it was just some weird tail-less species of bird… WEIRD!!! I hope it doesn’t effect his ability to fly, because he’s pretty darling <3
Oh, yaya……..
I love the little birdies…
i just want to say i love the statement “argue all you want but i am correct”
cheesybird–thanks for the info. I love bird knowledge! (If I were a bird I would want a name like Regulus regulus.)
If you have the same sort of sense of humour I do, and love birds, you will find this funny. Its surrealist Brit humour: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfvEgWINUFc
“These are worker ducks, they’re digging a hole”
NOTE: Contains some adult humour, but not language.
Cutest.Bird.Ever. =O
darkshines – Very, very funny, pip-pip- eh, what? Hon Glad- be a dear, do chirp in about it…phtpthtp utphtuptthh.(laughing with lips sealed)
Martha, I agree! Regulus regulus sounds so… regal. Better than the poor wren who’s stuck with the name Troglodytes troglodytes.
Bearded Reedling would be my guess… not that I’ve ever seen either species, but from pictures I’ve seen, Parrotbills have “messier” face markings. And, well, parrot bills.
