My apartment is infested with koala bears. It’s the cutest infestation ever. Much better than cockroaches. I turn the lights on and the koalas scatter. I’m like, come back! I want to hold one of you, and feed you a leaf.
I had a friend in high school whose (very cruel) older siblings told her that koalas were endangered because they had no rib cages, and tourists (not knowing this) would pick them up to hug them and squoosh them.
She was very relieved when I said, “Um, nooooo. No. Don’t worry. No.”
Koalas were my very favorite animal when I was little. Eric G gave me a koala stuffed animal when I was in 3rd grade (back when 9 year olds still played with stuffed animals) and I cherished that thing. I slept with Koali every night. Eventually his little neck got threadbare from all the hugging.
That first picture is just awe inspiring – sunbeam napping with that sweet baby! When my son went to Brisbane for graduate school he visited The Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary and got to hold one of these hugular bears! He even sent me a picture to prove it. So not fair!
Whenever I see a pic of mama and baby koala I’m reminded of many years ago, when a mama and a baby koala were stolen from the SF zoo (the dude stole them to give to his girlfriend; odd way of showing your love…) and the mama’s name was Pat and the baby’s name was Leann–and my mom’s name is Pat and I’m (obviously) Leann.
Don’t worry, the koala’s were taken back (by authorities) to the zoo and few days later and were just fine.
I’ve always wanted to pet one…
I went to the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary in Brisbane back in 2001 and held one, too! Their fur is really, really dense, yet still soft. The little girl I was holding got obsessed with the metal headband I was wearing and kept trying to grab it.
The longer I look at the mom and baby pic, the better it gets. Note the curved paw hugging little baby. And mom’s snorgling of little baby’s back. And both mom and baby’s eyes are closed (prolly blissed out). There’s a lot of curvitude going on in this pic. It’s all good.
People, people, people! This is the one and only rule that matters…..LOVE….no matter who loves who, love is what makes the workd go round, and this just shows how beautiful love is!!
I expected to come in here and find a bunch of Aussies screaming that koalas weren’t bears. There don’t seem to be any, so I will stand in. KOALAS AREN’T BEARS!
@RoseLB: [zoo glasses] Opossums (the only North American marsupial) have gestation period of about 12 days, making it the shortest gestation period of any mammal. All marsupials have really short ones, but that’s because the baby is born only partly developed and matures the rest of the way in the womb. [/zoo glasses]
And add my name to the “Not Bearz!” list. Also, not that soft… kinda feel like a blow-dried sheep… Red kangaroos, now, they’re made of clouds.
But cute? YES!!! Goodness me, yes oh yes I wanna kiss the widdle baby koalanosicle!!!
Koala hugs! There can be nothing softer! Bleenage?
Oh me wants one to snorgle. So soft so sweet love em love em!!

My brother had a soft toy Koala, called Coco. It was coloured blue…something wrong there methinks.
[You don't have blue cocoa in Merrye Olde Inglande? - Ed.]
That momma koala almost looks like she’s holding a teddy bear… I have seen kids sleeping with their bears just like that. Well, except not in a tree.
Aww, hugs! Hugs are the best, especially when from mom.
Can I curl up with my mommy in the sunshine? Wish i could….
Are those eyelashes or eyebrowsies?
Happy Birthday MEG!!!
Lone Pine, CATifornia? My absolute favorite place on the planet!

I need some assistance please. Where can I find the Rule of Cuteness? I need to study for the next quiz.
[Look in the right-hand margin under the Categories for "Rules of Cuteness" - Ed.]

I tried to get this to post his picture, but it didn’t work!

I expected to come in here and find a bunch of Aussies screaming that koalas weren’t bears. There don’t seem to be any, so I will stand in. KOALAS AREN’T BEARS!
They are, however, very cute.
We works with whut categories we gots, Shaz.
Hug, you koalas! HUG! Hooray, they are hugging!
Koalas combine all the cutest parts of tiny babies, fuzzy bear cubs, and elderly old men into one perfect cute bag.
Thank you, Shaz, for saying that. Cause I was-a-gonna if no one else did.
Cute? Yes. Bear? No.
I’ve also heard koalas don’t have a very strong grasp on world events for what it’s worth. Not great conversationalists.
Very cute! I’ve also been to the Lone Pine Sanctuary in Brisbane it is a beautiful place; but just for your info Koalas are marsupials NO BEARS!!!!

Um, so I went to, um, the San Diego Zoo, um. And on the tour, um, I heard that, um, Koalas, like, have a 35 day pregnancy.
Dude…sign me up for that….
Er…as opposed to the 40 week variety that we humans have….
Yeah.

You could always put ‘em in the category with the kangaroos and possums…
AAAAAARRRGGHH
They aren’t bears!!!
Look at that, when did sideburns ever look that anerably cute?
They are super cute.
Too bad I also know they’re super smelly.
Thanks, Ed, for the link. I can see it now!!! I can see I’ll be up all night with a pot of coffee; that’s a lot to learn — 39 rules!!
Sam is right – they aren’t bears.
They are angry, scratching, stinky marsupials that sound exactly like babies when they cry. They also feel like steel wool.
But they are adorable to look at from afar
Just wait till you get to the Glossary, Rooanne.
