  6. Oooooo, it is so wittle and kitten-y!
I wonder if skunks make good pets… I’ve heard they can be ‘de-scented’, but can they be happy as indoor animals and mingle with other critters?

  7. Allo, bah-bee! Ah am ze Pepe lePew, ze Seconde! Ah may be le ty-nee, but ah am not zo zmall for ze woo-weeng, non?

Is there a rule “When it fits in the palm of your hand, it’s cute”?
And if this isn’t a rule shouldn’t it be one?

    but seriously.. SUHH_WEEEETT!!

  12. Brian says:

Skunks don’t make good pets, like any wild animal. Yes, they can be de-scented, and I’ve known of some people who had it done to abandoned babies they adopted, or injured animals they took in to care for. They are raccoon-y in their craftiness and inquisitiveness. They are pretty energetic, and even de-skunked, they still smell – not as bad, but they have a definite skunky odeur about them.
They are like big stinky ferrets, from what I understand.

  13. crazyweinerdoglady says:

Skunks do make good pets. They’re like cats. Never take one from the wild though…there are people that breed them and there are alllllll sorts of cool colors you can get them in!

    Oh, and DAMN THAT’S CUTE!

  14. Theresa says:

    Omigosh, that is so precious!

  15. Indiana Joe says:

    Flower!

  16. CoffeeCup says:

Not sure if I like skunks being talked about as if they were purses or shoes (you can get them in different colors?) and I’m not sure as to whether they should be bred to be pets…seems to me that either they’re treated as pests (stink factor) or they should be left alone in the wild.

  17. dub1 says:

    Flow — dammit!

    IJ beat me to it.

And if you can’t say anything nice … dramatic pause … don’t say nothin at all.

… psst! unless it’s really, really funny

  18. Elaine E says:

Okay. So we have one “skunks DO NOT make good pets” and one “skunks DO make good pets.” (Plus an alarming they come in “cool colors” (?????).)

I’m going to err on the side of caution.

Aw what an adorable stink pot! Keesy keesy on his wee little haid!

they brought a de-stanked one to my school once when I was little. He was tame. I don’t remember him stinking! But I do remember they warned us that they have very sharp teeth!

  21. Jenni says:

    Precious!!

  22. fawn lust says:

    so tiny!

  23. catablob says:

actually we had a pet (descented) skunk when I was a child. I wouldn’t do that again, nor necessarily recommend it to others (though I won’t heap flaming excoriations on people who want or have pet skunks). He really didn’t seem temperamentally suited to pethood, which was something we (my family, anyhow) really didn’t understand 35 years ago. But he was a pretty darn cute little guy, I have to say.

  24. Kahva says:

That is not a skunk. That is a little black kitty who got run over by a line painter.

    :P

  29. neptune says:

I think something a long the lines of “youthful fluffulence” should make another rule of cuteness! The way the little wisps of fur stick up while his back is rounded (reminiscent of a kitteh) are too adorable!

  30. neptune says:

OR maybe just a rule that says “When wisps of your fluffy hair stick up while your back is rounded, it’s cute.” Right?!

  31. chanpon says:

    Le Mew…Le Mew…

If the stinkiness didn’t come with it, I wouldn’t mind the Mom
Skunk (with her own brood of anerable little babies) that always came into our front yard at night.

  32. Dusty says:

I just want to kiss him on his perfect Disney skunk nose!!

  33. Wbirdie says:

    LE UBERCUTE BEBE PEW!! :D

Single or double stripe? IIRC, the double stripes are on the decline, or a least much rarer. But,what is life without a dash of exotic perfume?

  34. Liz says:

Yesterday, our dog got into the Snausages and ate everything that was left – about half a tub. There is NO WAY that any skunk could smell as bad as her doggie farts right now.

  35. Gioia Kerlin says:

I have had three pet skunks in my life, and yes, I’d say they make good pets for the right person. They’re NOT as craft as a raccoon, and they do NOT smell bad. They have a faint (VERY faint) musky smell to their fur, but they do not stink. They use litter boxes like cats, play with toys like cats, and enjoy being with their humans just about as much as dogs do! You have to think a lot before you get a pet skunk, because they aren’t legal in all areas, and when they are, you may need to get an official permit and have your home inspected yearly. You also need to keep records of everywhere you take them, and if they bite someone, they will most likely be euthanized to check them for rabies.

Skunks become very attached to their humans, and love to play with you. If you feed them right, help them exercise, and understand that, while they’re not as pesky as raccoons, they do get into things sometimes, you can have a wonderful relationship with them. My guys generally like to take walks on a harness and leash in the back yard, play with cat toys and beanie babies, and my baby especially just wants to be snuggled. There’s no reason that a well socialized skunk can’t be a wonderful member of someone’s family.

And btw–skunks only spray in self defense. A wild skunk will try to run away from you first, and if they have enough contact with you they’ll learn not to even care if you’re around. They don’t just “stink” ever.

  36. kaitlyn says:

i worked at a wildlife clinic.. we had lots of baby skunks and they do smell when they are not “de-skunked.” they can spray you when they are very tiny, although it’s not so much of a spray as a lingering fart, haha. much weaker but still enough to make your eyes burn. Although the above post is true that they will try to run from you before spraying most of the time, if you surprise them or if they feel the slightest bit cornered, you better bet they will have the butt facing you quicker than you can imagine. they often stamp their little feet before spraying though. it’s adorable although a bad sign… :)

  37. Skunk means something entirely different to me.

  38. freya says:

    GRAB! KEESS!! SNORFFFLE!!!

Oh, the cuteness! It makes my teeth hurt!!

  39. Subhangi says:

    Le Petit Pew!

  40. Corinne says:

This is pretty crazy timing – just last night I ran into a baby skunk right outside my front door (and I’m in Chicago!). I came about 2 feet away from the little guy before I noticed him…and even then it took me a minute to compute since it’s not usually something you see in the city. I did kind of yell a little – but he just kinda looked at me before running off. Definitely didn’t spray. If I could have picked him up like this little fella I probably would!

  41. slythwolf says:

This? Right here? Imagine five of them living under your shed. Uh-huh. They were adorable, following their mom across the yard at dusk with their little teeny tails in the air. This is why I never had a strawberry harvest. These little buggers always ate them before I could.

  42. LisaHoneychan says:

Awww!!! I’ve allways thought skunks were adorable animals, this just solidifies it to me. Bebee skunks? I’m trying to pet the little skunkie head thru the monitor!

Wish I could have then for a pet here in Nevada, but no way. They look a million times cuter to me than ferrets, who cares about the stink! LOL

  43. DC says:

I had one of these little $hits bomb the crawlspace under my house once. I think it may have been cornered by a cat. Took months to get the smell out, it was horrible. They may be cute but they are not to be messed with!

I think a live skunk would be the most effective method of crowd dispersal. Forget tear gas, drop one of these little guys in the middle of a crowd and watch everyone run for cover!

  44. trin says:

watch out… to some people “big stinky ferret” is an endorsement.

    I LURVED my ferrets…
    (I have 2 cats now… )

  45. Owlfeather says:

    Flower!
    It really is adorable ^^

  46. Kris says:

    What a cutie pie!

Don’t skunks shoot flaming excoriations when they’re defending themselves?? ;o)

  47. girlnextdoortn says:

We have three little girl skunks at the zoo, and they are seriously the cutest things I have ever seen. Their tiny little heads, their digger claws, floofy tails (and removed scent glands) and they love being held.

  48. Babs says:

N’awww, this wee anerable tyke couldn’t possibly smell like anything but cookies.

  49. Erebella says:

Oh, that is just so precious with its super tininess and its curled floofy tail!!! I’ve heard skunks make good pets and I think I even saw a skunk show on TV once – like a dog show – seriously.

  50. freakymysty says:

I saw a program on Animal Planet about skunks as pets (I think it was a small segment of a whole skunk program or something). They seemed aloof, didn’t desperately clamor for attention, and sometimes playful (kind of like a cat). And the only “cool color” I saw was albino, which was actually very pretty! I think there may have been a few red ones but I’m not sure.

Btw, the eye capsules! So adorable!

  51. Jenn in IL says:

    And vanilla, Babs…don’t forget vanilla…

  52. Noelle says:

    Wittle Pepe is sooo cute.

We have lots of skunks around where I live. You always know when one gets hit by a car…ewww the smell.

Last October my family was vacationing in the mountains, my brother-in-law and I where tending the bonfire outside when we saw a skunk walk right up to the porch of the cabin and start sniffing around. We had accidentally left the remains of a turkey dinner out the night before and we think he was looking for that. We were frantically trying to call inside to tell everyone not to come out, I could just picture my sister opening the door and being sprayed. Luckily that didn’t happen and we just watch in amazement as the skunk sniffed around then walked off the porch and back into the woods. They waddle! It’s so cute.

  53. bucky says:

    SKUNX ARE DA CUTE!!!!!
    so beautiful.
i love them and wish they could be a pet, but i know they require specialised care.
I can still dream of skunkies, tho

    Thanx for the linky-luv too

  55. crazyweinerdoglady says:

Well when I said “cool colors” I meant they breed colors as in a dark red, apricot, etc (aside from standard black). As a wildlife biologist for my state I don’t recommend taking anything from the wild but see nothing wrong with RESPONSIBLE people breeding a tame species of skunk as pets. Of course who ever knows what responsible really is! lol (trust me in my job I’ve seen it all)

  56. Fegli says:

They aren’t stinky when they’re that little, I don’t think. Soooo cute! Bleen bleen bleen!

  57. Aoife says:

Oh, I just adore baby snunks (that’s right, snunks)! And big snunks, too. I volunteered at a wildlife haven that had dozens of baby snunks one summer. Not having all the necessary vaccinations, I wasn’t allowed to handle them, but I got to see them up close and adore them. They were so amazingly cute and funny.

  58. ThreeCatNight says:

And now, ah weel take a leetle nap,wiz mah adorable self. Zis hand looks so comfy, no? Ahhh, now to dream of ze l’amour. Le zzzzzz…..

    I’m now imagining CO boilerplate.

    ** WARNING **
The following post contains an exotic and/or unusual pet. Such pets are not for everyone. Careful research is recommended before the adoption of any pet. Please contact your local rescued organization(s) if you are not certain this pet is right for you.

Side effects include: Oohing, awwing, baby talk, bumped fingers and/or noses from trying to reach through the monitor, and exploding heads. In rare cases, nuffing-dom may result, followed by being drenched in pudding.

[Dude! I may need to put all this into the Glossary somehow... - Ed.]

  60. Eris says:

I call for a new category:

If you can fall asleep in someone’s palm, you’re cute.

  61. Gioia Kerlin says:

I still don’t think skunks smell bad at all. The baby one I just brought home this last month had a little bit of a smell, but that was from being raised in a skunk farm and from not being as clean as she should be. Now she smells just like my adult girl, which is MUCH MUCH less musky than an average ferret. Maybe the body odor depends on what you feed them, or how you keep them to a certain extent. I bury my face into my girls’fur, and kiss them all over, and it doesn’t bother me at all.

As for skunks being aloof, I suppose there are some who are less affectionate than others, but to be 100% honest, I can’t move in my house without having a skunk under foot. The big girl tries to climb my leg until I pet her, the baby begs to be cuddled, and they both follow me around wherever I go (and they have a fit if I close the door and they can’t get to me!). I actually have to close them in the kitchen sometimes when I need some “me” time. So mine are not aloof in the least. Both girls like to play chase at night–they chase me around while I run, and then we switch and I chase them.

Skunks come in several different colors and patterns of stripes: albino, champagne, lavender, brown, chocolate, black and white, etc. Obviously “lavender” isn’t purple–it’s a variety of light coloring. But they can have one stripe, two, big swirls of color, or splotches.

And I even have a friend who has a fully armed skunk (not descented). This skunk doesn’t spray anyone, and hasn’t for all the years my friend has had her–not even strangers. So even if they’re not descented, they still tame down to the point that you can have a great relationship with them, as long as you put the time into socializing them.

Like anything, there are individuals who don’t follow any certain norm. But in general, I think skunks are in some ways better pets than cats even. They don’t scratch the furniture as badly as cats, they don’t spray like an unaltered cat, and they’re more likely to follow you around looking for company. That’s just my .02.

    Gioia

  62. Mrs. P. says:

When I was an undergrad my parents had eighteen (18) skunks living under the shed of the neighbours behind them–mum and two litters. Cutest damned things, but when they sprayed . . . I rang a place to come and remove them (they didn’t get killed, just taken to a nearby national park), and my folks actually got a discount for volume–the owner had never seen so many at once. My mother called the young lad whose unfortunate job it was to come and set the traps and collect them “Dances With Skunks” . . . the babies used to come out about 8:30 every night and frolic. My father was less-amused. He was never again able to grow grass on a patch near their home until the day he died! We used to tease him that he must have pissed off St. Francis of Asisi pretty bad.

  63. Neighborhood Kitty Haven says:

Berthaservant – I almost sprayed green tea out my nosicles and onto my screen when I read that! Only 3:20 here.

  64. MMc says:

Oh maaaaan, sooooo cute! The eyes and the nuzzliness kill me…

  65. Katrina says:

Eris- Right you are! “Tiny Things in Palms” should be a category!

  66. Carolina2 says:

I can tell you in NO uncertain terms that the bebes DO spray!! When my daughter was about 6, she saw one in the playground. She was smitten, picked it up, and BAM!! The itty bitty skunk did what any self-respecting skunk would do!! It took several baths and shampoos with tomato juice to ‘descent’my daughter, and I even washed her clothes with tomato juice and bleach several times!! When I asked WHAT she was thinking, she said she didn’t think a baby skunk would spray. They DO, and if you’re holding them when they ‘go off’, well, you’re in trouble!! I can laugh about it now, but it wasn’t too funny at the time.

  67. sara says:

cute picture. random comment, if someone reads this who knows how to post a picture on the website, PLEASE TELL ME!

  68. sara says:

nevermind. i found out how to post a pic.

  69. Chelonianmobile says:

    Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

I went to an exotic animals show at a university once (some thing about encouraging people to sign up for Animal Sciences) and they had a mother skunk and her baby. Soooooo cute. The baby skunk was all little and fluffy and floppy and I’m squeeing right now even though I have the beginnings of my third ear infection of the month. We hired the same company to do my eighteenth birthday party (family thing, so I couldn’t get a stripper *grin*) and the baby skunk wasn’t available, but the mother made her appearance. What stayed with me was the way the tailfur is a very different texture to the rest of the fur – the tail fur is quite coarse and sticks out, but the rest of the fur is really soft. Odd little critters, and so very cute.

  70. Paunchie says:

so, do you actually use tomato juice to get the smell out?? (think Brady Bunch here)

  71. Katrina says:

Paunchie- You betcha. Poor Daisy Mae got skunked many a time, and tomato juice came to the rescue. Except that one time we got Daisy into the bath tub-(no mean feat) and my Mom brought up the V-8 juice. Yes, it worked, too.

  72. Theo says:

There’s actually stuff that works a lot better than tomato juice for removing Skunk Funk, though. The MythBusters tested this, in one episode:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MythBusters_(season_2)#Skunked.21

  73. Paunchie says:

HUGE mythbusters fan! Love crazy giggling Adam. and Jaime with the big walrus mustache.

  74. Paunchie says:

“beer. Busted Beer did not work.
…a douche. Busted A douche had also no effect at all.”

a beer doesn’t work? Or a douche?? How about a beer douche?? LOL

  75. Theo says:

Don’t go there, Paunchie. Just trust me.

  76. Paunchie says:

Sorry Theo, it cracked me up.

  77. Theo says:

Well sure, it’s funny until you… just trust me.

  78. Paunchie says:

    (psst, I get it now)

  79. Theo says:

Yeah, but there’s still this dead horse, and I got me this stupid rainstick…

  80. small but voicy says:

i dont know who you are but obviously your stupid! why would you post a comment like that when little kids can read it! by the way i am talking to theo and paunchie!

[Uhhmmmmm... okey dokes, then. Best be careful with that internet, there, you don't want to hurt yourself... - Ed.]

  81. That’s an adorable wee one…
I’ve never had the pleasure of smelling a skunk :)
    Are they really that bad?

I’m not really eager to test it out :) but that baby is just ADORABLE!

  82. Paunchie says:

so sorry to offend! though I do not believe I said a bad word. Blame MythBusters then.

    btw, it’s “you’re” not your.

  83. small but voicy says:

ok theo and paunchie, i was just kidding, i was at this girls house and she loves horses and she got mad because of one of your guys’comments and she told me to leave a comment. so i thought that i would, i really did not mean to be rude. truth is that i am an adult who was babysitting and i thought that i would be a good babysitter to her. once again soooo
sorry, i did not mean anything by it.

oh and just to let you know i am really good at grammar i just wasn’t paying attention.

  84. small but voicy says:

oh just wondering who is Ed?

[So, should I tell her, or do I make something up? - Ed.]

  85. Katrina says:

NO, tell the truth about you living on a small island off Madagascar and being a retired loofah salesman, she deserves the truth. It is up to you if you want to tell her what is in your refrigerator, imho.

  86. small but voicy says:

i think that you should tell me and also tell me some other things that i want to know like how old are you? or who is katrina? i mean i deserve a right to know, i didn’t do anything and this suspense is not doing any good.

  87. small but voicy says:

i mean you don’t have to tell me how old you are just tell me if you are a kid or not, i told you i was an adult. but I’m guessing that you are a teenager.

  88. Theo says:

Close, sort of. I *have* teenagers.

  89. Paunchie says:

Um, I’m not a kid, I’m “old” by now, or at least officially at middle age. Yeah again sorry to offend.

  90. smal but voicy says:

i usually don’t call a teenager a kid, so i really didn’t think you were a kid. so, do you (paunchie and theo) know each other?

  91. Theo says:

SBV — I haven’t met *anyone* from the Cute Overload circles, not even Meg or Other Mike, and that’s saying something. So you could say that I know Paunchie every bit as well as I know you.

  92. small but voicy says:

well i was just wondering. how long have you been looking at cuteoverload? ever since i first saw this website when i was babysitting i couldn’t get away from it.

  93. carrie says:

I took this pic, my friend found it along side a highway in the woods, near its dead siblings. The skunk was friendly, too young to spray, and took to milk right away. It was then brought to a rehabilitation center to be released into the wild.
