Finally, a zoo that understands the evil power of otters

by Meg on June 4, 2008

People, the Minnesota Zoo gets it. Finally a reputable establishment that understands the evil, evil powers that otters have over just about every other living creature! They simply cannot be stopped.

Washing washing ALWAYS WASHING, Alie S.!

Why do we want to stop otter from taking over the world? Just think…seafood at every meal, lots of lazing about the pool and EXTREMELY CUTE OVERLORDS!!! What is wrong with that?

3 Martha in Washington 06.04.08 at 6:24 am

DAMN YOU Lilyleo!! I was THIS close to a BLEEN!

4 binky-mama 06.04.08 at 6:31 am

Otters are totally evil! I saw a duck land in an otter enclosure at the Zoo, and the whole lot of them ganged up and took it down – very quickly.

9 Audrey 06.04.08 at 7:15 am

Gah! All the youtube videos aren’t working for me!! I wanna see the otterses!!

10 Lauren 06.04.08 at 7:30 am

12 berthaservant 06.04.08 at 7:59 am

And it’s not even Ottersday!

Speaking of which, it’s late, and I otter go to bed.

13 Kim 06.04.08 at 8:36 am

Welcome back, otters!

yuk yuk yuk

14 Sarah 06.04.08 at 10:20 am

Sea Otters are the kelp forest rangers of the oceans! If you think they’re cute regularly, just imagine them in tiny cloaks with tiny bows and arrows to defend the forests from the encroaching threat of sea urchins. Aaaieee~
Seriously, otters use tools with great precision and discretion, have dedicated life long relationships with each other, AND are cuter than puppies kittens and bunnies combined. I have NO idea why they haven’t managed to take over the earth yet.

15 Gail 06.04.08 at 10:25 am

Hmmm…..seems to me that maybe someone at the Minnesota zoo is a CO fan??

Teho??

16 Theo 06.04.08 at 11:36 am

Yep, this otter clip is part of a promotion for a new exhibit area the MN Zoo has been preparing, “Russia’s Grizzly Coast”. Officially opens this coming Saturday.
http://www.mnzoo.com/guests/RGC/rgc.asp

(I’m not *at* the zoo, though; I just live near it.)

17 Kari 06.04.08 at 12:02 pm

Yay, my zoo made it onto Cute Overload! :D

18 metsakins 06.04.08 at 12:04 pm

otterzotterzotterzotterz! oh my!

cuter than puppies, kittens and bunnies combined? Sarah, I can arrange for your deprogramming, will you come willing or do we have to have an intervention?

19 Khadija 06.04.08 at 12:46 pm

my workplace is like a zoo.

20 Sharon 06.04.08 at 1:07 pm

Otters, they try to have it all–even the disapproval. My bunneh is not amused.

21 OtterCubDC 06.04.08 at 1:14 pm

One day otters will rule the world, while kittens and puppies bow in deference!

22 Michelle 06.04.08 at 1:18 pm

They’ll be soaked to the skin, but with just a rub-a-dub, they’re all fluffy again.

Insane.

23 Kari 06.04.08 at 1:35 pm

I was reading through the comments and saw MY name on one and I thought, “Wait a minute — I don’t live in Minnesota!” Then I realized, my name has been usurped by a youngster that hasn’t even been around for as long as I’ve been a Kari!

But on the subject of otters: They’re OTTER-LICIOUS!!!

24 Kari 06.04.08 at 1:54 pm

That sounded really trollish. I’m sowwy.

25 Ermine_Violin 06.04.08 at 2:14 pm

JonTom would approve too!

26 One Skunk Todd 06.04.08 at 2:16 pm

I don’t think they have to worry about their backs too much. I mean they TAKE ON CROCODILES for goodness sake:

27 Sprock 06.04.08 at 2:34 pm

What good clean fun! I’ve gotta go now and book a trip to Minnesota. K. Bye.

28 Sherry 06.04.08 at 2:43 pm

Otters are extremely cute AND intelligent enough to use their cutenes for evil… however, have you ever visited otters at a zoo? They are extremely stinky! Ack! I’d say the stinkiness balances out the cuteness and so would prevent them from TOTAL world domination (though not from dominating a country or continent or two).

29 I! 06.04.08 at 2:43 pm

I went to the Dallas World Aquarium to visit a friend who loved otters and wanted very badly to see the ones they had there. As we found our way over to the exhibit, we saw a father shake his head and say, “That’s not very family friendly. Not family friendly at all.”

We got to the exhibit, and (as was Jaggy’s experience), saw an otter tearing a poor duck to bits! Yes, it was Nature in all of its glory, but that one traumatized a few kids. I will never think of otters the same way again.

30 J. Bo 06.04.08 at 2:48 pm

Meg, Meg, Meg– when will you ever learn? It’s not otters who are evil…

it’s SQUIRRELS! THEY’RE EVIL! EVIL, I TELL YOU!

31 Amy 06.04.08 at 2:58 pm

Aaaaaah, I love having home-state pride! There are lots of cute animals here.

32 One Skunk Todd 06.04.08 at 3:00 pm

Aren’t otters just sea-squirrels after all? Or maybe squirrels are just land-otters. :)

33 shappy 06.04.08 at 3:05 pm

Reminds me of that South Park episode where Cartman freezes himself so he won’t have to wait for the Nintendo Wii’s release. He ends up in a distant future filled with warring atheist groups, one of which is made up of fiendish sea otters.

34 Theresa 06.04.08 at 3:40 pm

Kari, I hear ya, there is another with my name who pops up sometimes and says things I would never say. That’s life on the net. Just ask Not That Mike The Other Mike.

35 Theo 06.04.08 at 3:54 pm

If ever a comment BEGGED me to insert a rogue “bleen” or two…

36 BBM 06.04.08 at 4:07 pm

Otters are extreeeemely adorabaubble!

37 Caryn 06.04.08 at 4:17 pm

Word…my membership dollars at work! I have not yet seen the new exhibit, but this ad is really going over big here in MN. And my cats are pretty pissed.

38 trin 06.04.08 at 4:36 pm

One Skunk Todd:”Aren’t otters just sea-squirrels after all? Or maybe squirrels are just land-otters. :)

No they are Sea-Ferrets… being from the Mustelid family.

Kittehs are cute and catch and eat birds and fish, puppies are cute and can catch and eat a lot of things. (Had a spaniel as a kid that brought in PART of a baby duck. eww.)

So I don’t really see how devouring a duck is somehow a minus for an otter, but not for more domesticated carnivores.

39 Kim 06.04.08 at 4:41 pm

If you love otters, check out http://www.vanaqua.org/ottercam/

The Vancouver Aquarium in Vancouver, Canada has a 24 hour live web cam of their totally cute otters.
By the way, when it looks like they’re preening themselves, they’re fluffing out their fur to create air…it talks about it on the website. Too adorable.

40 Jen in MN 06.04.08 at 4:41 pm

I just saw this ad on tv last night! My daughters and I are SOOOOO excited to see the new exibit!!!

41 claudia 06.04.08 at 5:12 pm

44 Leslie 06.04.08 at 6:44 pm

The Kansas City Zoo had a similar advertisement, but for koalas!

http://tonyvinh-writer.blogspot.com/2008/03/kansas-city-zoo-koalas-exhibit.html

45 Theo 06.04.08 at 7:11 pm

Leslie — it’s the vast no-wing conspiracy!

46 Joanna 06.04.08 at 8:02 pm

I saw this on TV last night too! and immediately assumed that the campaign was done by someone who is a CO regular.

47 Theresa 06.04.08 at 8:12 pm

Theo, maybe someone could write a “bleenizer,” like the old Swedish Chef “bork-bork-bork-izers.”

And then, maybe it could be used for something like this:

48 Theo 06.04.08 at 8:34 pm
49 Jen in MN 06.04.08 at 8:44 pm

Now I just heard an ad on the radio, too, some guy leaving a pet shop or something apologizing to the animals for leaving them to see the cuties!

56 Lemongrass 06.05.08 at 12:12 am

They are truly Monsters of Horror. From their Frolicsome Lairs of Death, they plot their Ultimate Vengeance, wherein they will lull us to sleep with their seemingly sweet playfulness, and then SUCK OUR BRAINS OUT WHILE WE SLUMBER!!! Then they will laugh their evil Laughs of Doom. BEWARE!!!

57 jn 06.05.08 at 2:17 am

58 ashagato 06.05.08 at 2:19 am

How ELSE are you going to get that hair perfectly unkempt if you don’t keep washing and fixing it until it’s juuuuuuust right.

62 CuteOtters.com 06.05.08 at 6:50 am

AAhhhh! You scooped me again on another otter entry! Nice one! :)

63 Theo 06.05.08 at 12:12 pm

Hi Peter — just serendipity, this time. Heh.

64 Capt' Tightpants 06.05.08 at 2:04 pm

Ok, first of all, the otters are damn cute and I, for one, am prepared to snorgle them all in their quest for world domination.

Second, I just set my Google preferences language to Elmer Fudd, and my life is now complete.

how did ah ever truwwy wive befow now?

65 Nicole 06.05.08 at 3:44 pm

Awesome advertising gig! ^v^

66 riolinda 06.05.08 at 4:39 pm

Best commercial ever! Love the washing behind the ears! :)

67 c 06.05.08 at 10:42 pm

I used to collect anything that had to do with otters. I have loved them since I was little. They are so cute.

68 Auroram 06.06.08 at 12:53 am

Hey, that’s my local zoo! Yay, my local zoo made CO news! Those otters are frazzing adorable, which is a good thing, considering you can smell them from two trails away. And we’re not talking lavender chamomile body lotion, folks.

69 Carolina 06.06.08 at 8:04 am

How come they took this vid down already? That’s SO not fair!! I wanted to see it, but I was a day late, I reckon. Does anyone know WHY it was removed?

70 Carolina 06.06.08 at 8:08 am

Wow!! I just tried again, and it’s back up. Less than 5 minutes ago it said it was ‘no longer available’, and now it’s back!! How strange. I have always wanted one of my own. I have an extra bathtub.

71 Theo 06.06.08 at 2:31 pm

Embedded YouTube videos are sometimes just goofy that way, Carolina.

72 Jo 06.08.08 at 5:08 pm

So otters tear ducks to bits, they have to eat. Roadrunner tear hummingbirds to bits, hawks tear up anything – get over it. Otters are anerable!! LLO – Long Live otters.
