Michelle, don’t listen to those people, they’re lying. “Nuffer” is actually a misspelling of the French “neuf heure,” which means “nine o’clock.” It’s actually a very long and complicated story as to where it came from, but it’s basically equated with “being out in left field” (which is where 9 is on a clock), not to mention the numerical reference hints at RADAR lingo, as in “look out, we’ve got a whiner on the screen” kind of thing.

I know what they told you before, but it’s all hokum. I’m telling you the honest-to-Pete origin of “nuffer” here. No lie.
