gargle bleen horseradish Jingleheimer Schmidt?

why do i want to hear that stupid old “ma nah ma nah” music as a background to this? (there may be music, but I don’t have speakers in the office)

Awesome! They should have invented these years ago. It’s like a Barbie car for Hammies.

3 binky-mama 05.06.08 at 7:30 pm

*pulls over Mr. Mc Speedypants*

“Sir do you know how fast you were going?”

“Nyerhe!”

4 Estlin 05.06.08 at 7:31 pm

Third?

(God, I hate it when people go bonkers over being “bleen” to post a comment. Who cares?)

Anyway…that’s a cool contraption!

[No worries, Estlin; I'm on it... - Ed.]

5 Christy K. 05.06.08 at 7:33 pm

This should totally be in the Product Cuteness category, too!

6 jen 05.06.08 at 7:36 pm

estlin, play nice!

a hammie car. tewtelly redonk! lol. so cute! that looks so funny.

7 Theo 05.06.08 at 7:46 pm

Christy K. — agreed… fixing

8 starling 05.06.08 at 7:47 pm

That’s not a HumVee. That’s a HamVee.

9 Melissa M. 05.06.08 at 7:48 pm

I love the way hammie backs up so he can scootle properly over the carpet/tile barrier. WHEEE!

10 steppy 05.06.08 at 7:49 pm

All the better to make a fast gettaway for the evil cat creature lurking around the corner!!!!!!!!! Vrrrrrrrrrrrrrmmmmmmmmmm

11 M. V. 05.06.08 at 8:04 pm

Dang! I never saw anyone (or thing) go so fast before that both front AND rear wheels come off the road!

12 Amanda 05.06.08 at 8:10 pm

…More like a Ham-Whee!

Sorry, that one kinda hurt.

I really want some sweet background music, like 409 or Grease Lightning or something. That would totally make this video for me.

13 KendraPT 05.06.08 at 8:27 pm

That’s pretty cool. Wonder if the hamster can learn to really control it and try to run things or people or other animals over? When Hamsters attack in cars…..

14 claudia 05.06.08 at 8:39 pm

This made me laugh! Sweet!

15 sunnymum 05.06.08 at 8:39 pm

I think the background music should be “Go speed hammie racer! Go speed hammie racer! Go speed hammie racer go!” And perhaps hammie could see the new Speed Racer flick ensconsed in her cool pink hamvee! prolly make them call her Trixie next…

16 sunnymum 05.06.08 at 8:39 pm

oops, ensconced that is…

17 lymerae 05.06.08 at 8:47 pm

can it turn? Or only go forward and back? Seems like there would be a lot of repetitive bumping if it was the latter.

18 DaytimeDeb 05.06.08 at 8:48 pm

Don’t worry, little hammie — I had a hard time getting out of 1st gear when I first learned to drive, too. :-)

19 Mary (the first) 05.06.08 at 8:55 pm

“Her name was Lola, she was a speed-girl, ” er um that’s the end of my Barry M. knowledge. But I do know this hammie’s name is Lola! How fun to give her a pink car to drive around the house. Less likely to get stepped on also.

20 Seven Paws 05.06.08 at 9:13 pm

…..slinking away with tail between legs… :(

sorry…

21 Theo 05.06.08 at 9:15 pm

’sokay 7Paws. Now you know.

;)

22 Juno 05.06.08 at 9:16 pm

Just remember when they’re in one of those contraptions–make sure you block off the stairs. (I’ll spare you the details.)

23 AuntieMame 05.06.08 at 9:19 pm

I can’t see the video yet (no videos at work), but from the sound of the comments, this picture seems appropriate here:

24 Becca 05.06.08 at 9:31 pm

The solution to rising gas prices? All we need is dozens of little hammies..

25 Marianne 05.06.08 at 10:10 pm

go little hammie go!! I’m glad to finally see one of these in action.

26 Gail 05.06.08 at 10:39 pm

I wonder if the folks at Glarkware could manufacture the HamVee?? We have lots of Hammie-owners, environmentalists, peeps who just like cool stuff.

“It could work!!”

Just thinking….

27 chanpon 05.06.08 at 10:49 pm

Racer X! The years have not been kind to you. :(
*No, I’m not looking forward to the upcoming Speed Racer movie*

28 ornith 05.06.08 at 11:09 pm

I saw a picture of this on Boing Boing and thought, “omg Cute Overload must see this!”. Not at all surprised someone beat me to it!

BUT! I can tell you where to get your VERY OWN HamVee!
http://www.petgadgets.com/product_details.cfm?product_id=281&content_id=9

And apparently they make a “Hamtrack” for it to run on, too, so your fuzzball doesn’t crash into the walls so much!
http://www.petgadgets.com/product_details.cfm?product_id=390&content_id=32

AuntieMame, that’s perfect! Hamster speeders totally get pulled over by guinea pig cops!

29 Fegli 05.07.08 at 1:34 am

Pffft! Nuts to knight rider… CO has ham rider.

30 Ajax 05.07.08 at 1:42 am

Hmm. Would you like to be put in a big plastic ball that rolls whenever you make the slightest movement? What is it that is cute or funny about confusing a small captive animal? The hamster is running because he’s confused and wants to get out of the plastic ball prison.

31 berthaservant 05.07.08 at 2:42 am

Ajax: I would say WHEEEEEE, what a great way to get exercise! (I don’t imagine the hammy is kept there permanently!)

[You, sir, are what we in the Serious Business call "right on". - Ed.]

32 AuntieMame 05.07.08 at 2:48 am

I just watched the video. OMG!!! I had no idea it was really and truly hammie powered! I thought it was a hammie on a radio controlled car. Eeeeeee!

33 Meri 05.07.08 at 2:49 am

@ ornith: So cute! Thanks for the links!!

34 tenshihi 05.07.08 at 4:31 am

It’s a HamVee.

35 Ajax 05.07.08 at 4:44 am

Berthaservant [and Ed.]: According to your logic, any amusement that a human would voluntarily engage in is fine–indeed, fun(!)–for any other animal. Push kittens off high dives? Yes! That’s fun (at least for some people)! Puppies in parachutes–how cute! Almost as cute as bungie jumping bunnies!

Is this way of thinking just a bit solipsistic? Well, maybe, but it’s sure amusing! And that’s what matters!

BTW, I didn’t suggest or assume that the hamster is in the ball permanently. Can’t understand why you pointed that out.

36 berthaservant 05.07.08 at 5:40 am

Umm…because you called it a “plastic ball prison.” Using the word “prison” tends to indicate some kind of involuntary incarceration.

Look, I personally don’t like to run in a treadmill type wheel thingie, but from what little I know about hammies, they seem to enjoy it. They are given wheels to run around and they do. No one forces them. I don’t think this plastic ball is that different. Or at least I think it’s POSSIBLE that the hammie is having a good time. But you know what? I don’t know. BECAUSE I’M NOT A FREAKIN HAMSTER.

Let’s put it this way — does this hamster have a better life than it’s sibling who was probably fed to a snake?

37 Kitty 05.07.08 at 6:16 am

Ajax – while I can’t speak for all hampsters, having shared my home with a number of them over the years I’d like to think I have a reasonable amount of experience with the little fuzzy guys. I’m 100% sure they enjoyed their plastic balls. How do I know? I didn’t put them into their balls, instead I’d put the ball into their terrarium. Every time, they immediately scrambled on over, gave it a good sniff, and then clambered on in and waited to be transferred to the floor. When my teddy bear hampster Frasier was feeling poorly due to congestive heart failure she stopped this tradition for a bit, but I knew her meds were starting to kick in when hopped right back over to her ball again a few days later. You just keep an eye on them, give them plenty of room to run around, and make sure they’ve got access to water after a limited amount of exercise time… they’ve always seemed to enjoy it. (And occasionally a good long nap in their fluff immediately thereafter!) ^_^

38 Firn 05.07.08 at 6:53 am

No matter how hamsters enjoy running in this treadmills – I still think there is a difference between weather they CAN get out of it if they want or not.

To me it looks like the hamster can’t get out of this on it’s own and I don’t think it looks cute, but cruel.
But that’s just my opinion.

39 PitterPatter 05.07.08 at 7:36 am

Hamster balls are getting nuffed now? Good grief. Everything has become nuff worthy. :(

40 Hon Glad 05.07.08 at 7:43 am

Now we have the answer to Global warming and the fuel crisis. Hammie powered vehicles. Of course we would have to replace petrol stations with Hammie stables for a change of fresh Hammies along the route.

41 Red 05.07.08 at 7:50 am

Hammie Unleaded?
Fill ‘er up!

42 Magnoire La Chouette 05.07.08 at 10:41 am

Um, how does he steer the thing?
He or she was enjoying the heck out of it anyway!Cute, but give me an old fashion hamster ball!

43 slythwolf 05.07.08 at 11:01 am

Okies, so now I require one of these for my own ham. Do they come in dwarf size?

44 Cat 05.07.08 at 12:02 pm

http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=11142&rel=1

They have ‘race tracks’ for these little things. I bought one of the cars for my beloved little syrian twinkie and she’d always clambour to get inside. When she wanted out? She’d just stop running and sniff or nibble at the little plastic safety.. nub. I don’t know what to call it. Either way, it was clear when she wanted to go out, and the track seems like you could make sure they didn’t roll off the stairs or something.

Either way! It’s cute and she definately enjoyed it.

45 amy 05.07.08 at 12:25 pm

I am passionate about animal welfare and despise animal cruelty. I have to chime in here and say that my Syrian hamster loves her hamster ball. I wouldn’t put her in the one of the cars, because they’re not made of clear plastic and they’re not very maneuverable. Plus, it looks like it would be hard for hammies to “smell” where they are going in it.

My hamster willingly and happily CHOOSES to climb into her ball to go exploring and has since the first day I introduced it to her. She’s intelligent enough to know what it’s for, and she enjoys it. Plus, it keeps her safe in areas where she can’t “free range.”

Just use common sense. Use a clear ball of an appropriate size, limit time in the ball, make sure not to use it by stairs, and give hammies the choice of whether or not to use it.

46 Babs 05.07.08 at 1:07 pm

I want one. For me. I has no hammie.

47 Addis 05.07.08 at 1:27 pm

He forgot to say “Yabba-Dabba-Doo!” before speeding (?) away.

48 Ray 05.07.08 at 2:47 pm

I hate to admit it, but after seeing hammie in his cool little car, an image of the Pope-mobile flashed into my mind. Yep, I know where I’m going.

49 Katrina 05.07.08 at 3:02 pm

Ray-I’ll save you a seat in one of the higher circles…I thought the same thing. A clear white one would be worse. No miter, though, that’s one distinction….unless we get the hammie a, oh what were those hats we were working on? Sarcasm hats? OH, dear and it isn’t even my religion, I’m going a level down farther than you, Ray. I’ll look up once in a while and wave!

50 Theo 05.07.08 at 3:02 pm

Would that be the Vatican, Ray?

51 Alden 05.07.08 at 4:19 pm

Count me in on the hammies-love-balls train! My hammie ASKS to come out and VOLUNTARILY enters her ball. Some evenings she doesn’t want to and nobody makes her. But she LOVES her ball. And she follows the cat around when she’s in it… she’s hardly confused or anxious. I don’t think anybody who’s ever spent serious time watching a hammie in her ball could think that.

Of course there should be a time limit and you must be safe blah blah, but the balls themselves are great hammie fun!

On the OTHER hand, as cute as this vid is, I am not a fan of the cars (or the Barbie horse-drawn chariot one). We bought one (and the racetrack!) for my last ham and she thought they sucked, because she couldn’t steer and couldn’t really see that well. Now THAT was an anxious, unhappy ham. We returned both the next day and went back to the steerable balls! Paws up!

World’s Fastest Hamster Chases
Caught on Tape!

53 Susan 05.07.08 at 7:08 pm

It really is a car powered by hamsters!

54 Suzanne 05.07.08 at 8:29 pm

I thought this video was cute because it reminded me of my old hamster.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v669/GremlinGirl/DSC00007.jpg

Although, I will have to agree with the comments. Bella liked her ball but did not like her pink car. I believe she was put in it this one time for photos and never put in it again.

55 nads 05.07.08 at 9:57 pm

Sir Hamlet Peanut loooovees his ball and his predecessor Gus did also. I think they’d rather roll around in a ball for a while than stay cooped up in a cage all the time. Gotta nuff a little about the car though-looks like it would be frustrating for the ham to not be able to see or turn properly.

56 Katherine 05.08.08 at 5:57 am

Did that hamster really just BACK UP THE CAR in order to get off the carpet??

57 Gail 05.08.08 at 9:56 am

LOL-ing @ Pope-mobile!!
