Caturday Craftin’

by Meg on May 3, 2008

Sender-Inner Maria Ruth writes: "I am an avid collector (and embroiderer) of vintage embroidery patterns, and when I came across this one (it originally said "Sunday") I thought, "Oh, no, that looks like Caturday to me!"

…To use it, one would print off the Caturday_transfer.jpg, trace over it with a special embroidery transfer pencil (available from any craft store) and iron it onto a piece of cloth. I just made the "flipped" image so you can see what it looks like once it’s ironed on.

Happy Caturday crafting!

I was wondering what I was going to be doing today……
now I know. I’ll let Maria Ruth make the underpants, though. Happy Caturday folksies!

2 leah b. 05.03.08 at 11:13 am

what a neat pattern and yes I agree with the sender inner its definatly a Caterday design. Now If I only had the patience to actually make one.

3 leah b. 05.03.08 at 11:15 am

Oh, and Katerina we call each other peeps not folksies around these parts.

4 Allie 05.03.08 at 11:30 am

You’re infringing on copyright. Changing on letter does not change that. These are still available through Aunt Martha’s, the company that made most of these transfers back in the day.

Not cute.

[Could we have a dash of proof on this helping of libel, please? - Ed.]

5 Holy Cuteness 05.03.08 at 12:14 pm

Cool…

6 L.H. 05.03.08 at 12:22 pm

There are lots of cute- and weird- vintage patterns for free on mytransfers.blogspot.com from companies that are out of business. She avoids ones like Aunt Martha’s that are still around.

I got interested in embroidery just a few months ago, and started looking for vintage patterns online just last week, so I was surprised to see this on CO. Maybe the world really does revolve around me and my interests. Hee!

7 SayYesh 05.03.08 at 1:00 pm

Okay, here may be the dumbest question of the day. How does someone start doing this? We’re talking about someone who knows little, or may have known little in a long ago time. Tell me it’s simple.(new hobby comin’ up?)

8 Katrina 05.03.08 at 1:28 pm

Thanks Leah, B. and fellow peeps, (after the squishy yummy candy-like non-foodstuffs? I love those!) and I call myself Katrina. Just sayin’. Peep!

9 AliceTanzer 05.03.08 at 1:30 pm

Allie – Does Aunt Martha’s make a Kitten sleeping in a bed design? The design does have an Aunt Martha type of design to it, so I wouldn’t be exactly suprised if it was a redesigned Aunt Martha, but I don’t remember a sleeping cat…

10 ermine violin 05.03.08 at 1:41 pm

I sure wish I embroidered … I’d be all over this! I think it’s adorable :)

Why are people bein’ so snarky lately?

11 nads 05.03.08 at 1:52 pm

Hey I have this pattern! (minus the Caturday)but I don’t remember if it was Aunt Martha or not-probably though because that’s the only kind my grandma bought and it was she who taugh me to embroidery…I made this as a pillow case when I was 6! Super easy pattern to follow! Yeah embroidery! :)

12 ermine violin 05.03.08 at 1:53 pm

http://www.colonialpatterns.com/

there are no such patterns as this at the Aunt Martha website. FYI

13 Maggie 05.03.08 at 1:57 pm

I can’t say for sure whether it is a copyright infringement (as embroidery isn’t my thing), but it is a serious issue. Designers work long and hard on patterns (whether embroidery, knitting, sewing, whatever), and have rules about how they can be used. It’s not snark, it’s protecting yourself and other artists.

That said, it is a very cute pattern and reminds me of the Youtube video of the smush-face kitty waking up and rubbing his eyes.

14 blair 05.03.08 at 2:30 pm

can’t doo eeeet!

(goes back to sleep honk-shoo)

15 Lori 05.03.08 at 3:18 pm

It could be Vogart, Aunt Martha’s, Workbasket, or McCall’s if it was taken from a commercial pattern. All of them made embroidery patterns like this.

16 Allie 05.03.08 at 3:25 pm

Here’s your “dash of proof.”

SayYesh – There are two places online that I suggest you look for help. The about.com website has a lot of information about crafts. And I sure the Embroidery Guild of America (do a search) will have information and links. Many local libraries have groups dedicated to needlework of various kinds. (as a matter of fact, all the libraries within a 20 mile radius of me have one of some sort). Often at these groups there are many experienced peeps who would like to teach/help people learning the craft.

that said, I am a sucker for cat crafts if anyone would like to give a glance at my blog.

18 Annie 05.03.08 at 4:32 pm

Chances are this image is in the public domain now. Without getting too technical, copyrights issued before 1978 had shorter terms–generally a maximum of 56 years. Since it was published in the 40’s, the maximum time of protection has expired.

19 jules 05.03.08 at 4:42 pm

Beautiful! I’m not stitching up any underpannts, but this is SO cute. *head splodes* Thanks, Maria Ruth!

20 Michelle 05.03.08 at 5:10 pm

While I’m not a copyright lawyer, I don’t believe this is copyright infringement. This particular pattern was created in the early 30s, according to the earliest versions of the vintage Monarch patterns I saw online. The artist was probably commissioned or employed by Monarch, which means they weren’t credited. The copyright for the artwork probably expired recently (70 yrs after first publication) and the company would likely have no claim, even if they still existed.

21 Eli 05.03.08 at 5:19 pm

That pattern is too cute!
and to Maria Ruth:that makes two of us. I’m one as well lol.

22 Hon Glad 05.03.08 at 5:34 pm

As I can barely sew on a button, I won’t be attempting this. However if some enterprisig embroiderer wants to knock out a few handkercheifs, I’l by one. Hint hint.

23 Dete 05.03.08 at 5:44 pm

I thought the pattern was adorable. And thank you for sharing. About the comment of the copyright…Frankly, yes I’ll be using the pattern. But this picture has revived an interest in an old hobby. I’ll be checking the legit patterns as well. If I didn’t see this pattern I might not be cruising legit websites (thanks for the address) – so there are winners all around.

24 berthaservant 05.03.08 at 6:13 pm

This was me like twenty minutes ago.

The whole concept of copyrighting images seems vague in this our digital age. But then, I know less about copyrighting than I do about embroidery.

25 Ms.McPantiesinaBunchnuff 05.03.08 at 6:16 pm

Some of these people that come here…they must be the most stressed out people on earth…they could make a toothpick into an object of controversy!

26 debg 05.03.08 at 6:33 pm

Non-embroiderers who want to get started: after you’ve transferred the design according to Maria Ruth’s instructions, put the fabric in an embroidery hoop. This design is really well suited for simple French knots, described on any embroidery how-to site. You just make a knot on each dot. That’s how I’d do it, if I still embroidered.

27 Theo 05.03.08 at 7:32 pm

Allie –

OK, good eye. It does appear to be the same pattern shown on the link you have provided, the one that says (quoting) “Copy of Monarch Pussy Cat Tea Towels you’ll adore Circa 40’s. Kittens doing chores 7 days a week. Easy to use, just use a tracing pencil and iron the image on your fabric.”

http://www.juliascollectibles.com/ju28000.htm

It’s now 2008, though; these *copies* are from the 1940s. You might skim some actual descriptions of copyright law before you start making accusations. Start here; this seems relatively readable:
http://www.bitlaw.com/copyright/duration.html

28 Amanda B. 05.03.08 at 7:59 pm

We really need a Bunday.. Sunday = Bunday.. bunnies need this kind of attention too!

29 Chupi 05.03.08 at 8:11 pm

I wonder how much money Meg gets from Hartz.

[That'd be Meg & Co.'s LLC, actually, not Meg herself... and probably about as much as any other ad... - Ed.]

30 Monty 05.03.08 at 8:11 pm

The patterns are no longer avaliable through Colonial Patterns Inc, the owner of Aunt Martha’s. They seem to have discontinued this particular pattern at some point. These particular patterns (going by the link provided by Allie) are no longer produced and a quick search shows them showing up at vintage resellers.

Finding it for sale at a vintage reseller does NOT offer proof of copyright owned by Colonial Patterns Inc. It only offers proof that they were, at one point, produced and sold by Colonial Patterns Inc, likely in the 30’s or 40’s. The copyright may well have long run out.

Infringement would only really come into play if a) the copyright is still in effect or has been renewed and b) this was offered at a price.

31 Jmper 05.03.08 at 8:21 pm

Hey peeps just got the scoop from my brother the lawyer (He specializes in copyright and pattens(sorry if my spelling is off its been a long night)) Anywho he said that since this was done in the 40’s or 50’s and they didn’t renew the copyright it would now be public domain. He said the only way for this to be infringement was if they did renew. He said to check and see if the picture had a copyright on it.

He also said that the person who made this probably wouldnt get into that much trouble if it was copyrighted because she was not claiming this as her own. She changed one word and put it on a free website for people to download as needed. Because she is not charging for this and because the copyright is probably out of date and the pattern is now indeed public domain then Maria Ruth is perfectly fine doing what she did.

Man I alway knew it would come in handy some day having a brother who does this kind of thing…even if i did have to interrupt his big meeting with Nike over a patten issue…oops

So yeah very cute pattern.

32 Jmper 05.03.08 at 8:24 pm

An addition.

He said to check and see if it had a copyright on the picture and if it had a renewal on it (I have no idea what that looks like though)

All in all its up to the company to deal with this…9 times out of 10 they are not going to get anything out of Maria Ruth even if they did pursue the matter. Happens all the time.

33 Point Of Contentionuffer 05.03.08 at 8:44 pm

Just a point here – the website that was pointed out is selling “copies” of these – so, isn’t this too – some kind of infringement?

Also, you’re going to tell me that back in 1949 when Aunt Martha sat down to embroider something that she didn’t perhaps change it sometimes, someway, somehow?

Oh and I think the cross-eyed cat on the ad makes up for the ad itself.

34 Lizzy 05.03.08 at 8:46 pm

But would you wear your Bunday undies on Sunday or Monday?

Pfft, what am I thinking – two pairs, where them both days!!!

35 L.H. 05.03.08 at 9:49 pm

SayYesh, or anyone else interested in starting embroidery, go to sublimestitching.com. Jenny Hart has kits with everything you need to get started, and the coolest patterns around. (All her own artwork.)

She even advertises on CO. :)

36 patito gigante 05.04.08 at 12:10 am

*ahem*
(unrolls parchment)

“My Excellent Queen, Her Majesty Maude the Cat, does Hereby Decree on this Caturday the Third of May 2008, that all Dog Sweaters, Dog Kerchiefs, and Any Such Related Articles of Canine Apparel shall Henceforth be Stitched with the above Caturday Design, on Punishment of Disapproval.”

(nails parchment to doody-bag dispenser at dog park)

(rides away on squeaky bicycle)

37 Lydia 05.04.08 at 1:18 am

I am a copyright lawyer, and my argument would be that the new design is protected by the concept of fair use. The creator is not making any money off her ‘Caturday’ interpretation, and the concept taken as a whole is clearly parody.

Goofy stuff – and never a good idea to wildly launch a claim of copyright infringement unless you:

a) created the work yourself *and* are annoyed (check Creative Commons for some common sense of this topic)

b) consult an attorney

Cheers,

Lydia

P.S. In exhange for this legal non-advice, I would like to see more rats :D

38 Lydia 05.04.08 at 1:20 am

Darn it – common sense *on* this topic, not *of* this topic. Ugh – being a lawyer doesn’t mean you aren’t a weenie ;)

Lydia

39 Yitzysmommie 05.04.08 at 1:30 am

Qte pattern – looks a teensy bit like Chessie, the sleeping kitten of the Chesapeake railroad.

40 Mel 05.04.08 at 2:30 am

Okay, I propose the days of the week be renamed as follows:
Meowday
Toadsday
Weirdsday
Turtlesday
Fishday
Caturday
Bunday

41 Average Jane 05.04.08 at 2:33 am

I think this is what I’ve been waiting for to get me to drag out my old embroidery floss and hoops and start embroidering again!

42 Annie 05.04.08 at 2:38 am

LOL… such seriousness. I actually made this exact pattern when I was in fifth grade… oh and BTW the days of the week were and optional part of the pattern.
oh and Hang on a tick I will go find a link to some embroidery instructions

43 Annie 05.04.08 at 2:47 am

here you go… any interested peeps

this link takes you to an illustrated page of embroidery instructions

http://www.craftown.com/instruction/embroidery.htm

and here is a quick list of tools and supplies
needles- type embroidery (they have a larger eye so easier to thread)
An embroidery hoop
embroidery thread
a nice piece of cotton or cotton polyester blend cloth
a pair of scissors

and you are up and running
IT is actually a quick and easy and fun craft and easily carried with you in the car or on train or bus.

44 debg 05.04.08 at 3:00 am

But not a plane! No needles or scissors! Don’t embroider in the air.

45 hey-h 05.04.08 at 3:13 am

The pattern is totally cute – and the discussion of copyright law has actually been pretty interesting. Thanks for the contributions, lawyers and relatives of lawyers!

46 ermine violin 05.04.08 at 4:32 am

I’m just posting to test someting…. don’t mind me :D

47 Nuffy McNufferson 05.04.08 at 4:53 am

“hrumph. nuffer. copyright. grrr. infringement.”

Points for originality and armchair lawyering, though, Allie.

48 Kate 05.04.08 at 4:57 am

one post a day does not a cute overload make….

49 Theo 05.04.08 at 4:58 am

Annie — allow me to quote a bit, if I may…
“a pair of scissors and you are up and running”

Tsk. What WOULD your mother say.

50 A 05.04.08 at 5:42 am

Teho LOL she would probably say something about putting my eye out.
Har har har

oh and @ Debg snicker please note the careful omission of taking said items on a plane… IT was on purpose. LOL.

51 Annie 05.04.08 at 5:54 am

Urk that was me that posted grrr you would think I didn’t use the computer every day sometimes LOL typing my name as A and not Annie

52 Martha in Washington 05.04.08 at 5:55 am

I’m wondering if some very industrious person (obviously NOT me) could make this into a crosstitch pattern?

53 taj 05.04.08 at 6:32 am

Point Of Contentionuffer,

I’m SO glad I’m not the only one who thinks the Hartz cat looks cross-eyed. Hehe!

54 Totalee Puppy 05.04.08 at 2:07 pm

May I put in my suggestions for renaming days of the week? Other ideas are still there…
I’m trying to include as many animal groups as I can…
Monday Jungleday
Tuesday CutePupday
Wednesday Wildernessday
Thursday Turtlesday
Friday Fishday
Saturday Caturday
Sunday Bunday

55 Totalee Puppy 05.04.08 at 2:21 pm

KATRINA–A rose by any other name–you are, for us.
YITZYSMOMMIE–You’re right, the sleeping kitten does look a little like “Chessie.” I forget a lot of nice things like that until I read comments on CO.

56 anomalous4 05.04.08 at 3:05 pm

When it comes to unnerwarez, every day is Bunday! :-)

57 bookmonstercats 05.04.08 at 3:14 pm

Allie, Maggie and anyone else on the subject of copyright infringement. I’m a lawyer (albeit English) so I know how important it is to protect people’s legitimate interests. However, I will now visit the web-sites mentioned, especially anything “Aunt Martha” and probably buy something, since I embroider (badly) and do cross-stitch (a bit better). So, in her own way, the sender-inner will certainly generate more revenue for “Aunt Martha”, at least from this peep.

58 Turbofloof 05.04.08 at 3:38 pm

OMG Ponies!!1 Ok, off the “Copyright Infringement” topic for a moment… I got my “No Hammipants Pink CO T-Shirt!” With a “cute” on the sleeve, no less! Bleeeen!

I’m off to run Bunday errands in my new uniform!

59 metsakins 05.04.08 at 4:27 pm

MarthainWashington- All you would need to do is print it out on the grid size you would like to work it in.

For making pictures into counted cross stitch (photos and stuff) plenty of software is out there.

60 Brenda 05.04.08 at 8:00 pm

I would have embroidered (sp)
this onto a pillowcase for one of my toddlers (back in the day). Ah, the memories. My kid’s pillow case had a lion, a giraffe and a camel. Sigh!!

61 Jules 05.04.08 at 8:21 pm

Has nobody mentioned candlewicking? I think this would be perfect. A nice understated embroidery – tone on tone, maybe candlewicked in cream on an off-white linen. Very retro!!

62 Babs 05.05.08 at 1:16 pm

Lydia, why am I not surprised a lawyer is a fan of rats? ;p

I hereby copyright that joke.

Hey, Meg, I find singing wallets offensive. I demand you C&D that ad immediately.

63 h3llc4t 05.05.08 at 3:26 pm

Has no one else thought it looked like it said “Carurday”?

64 Seven Paws 05.05.08 at 4:53 pm

The design rules, whether it was appropriated or not…and even if it was, it won’t stop me from embroidering it on a t shirt! (BTW, I have also done my own embroidery design of Chessie the cat, since I couldn’t find a commercial design. Wow, last week it was crochet, this week embroidery!

65 DawnOctopus 05.05.08 at 8:07 pm

*NICE* Thanks for the pattern, it will be put to good use.

66 Lydia 05.06.08 at 4:47 am

Hey now, some of my best clients are rats!
