  4. How did you manage not to include one of the shots of an anteater in a SWEATER?? Or dressed as SANTA???

    Completely redonk.

  5. bryn says:

Anteaters as pets? I didn’t know they were so cute!

  6. brinnann says:

I scrolled through that entire series of photos with my jaw hanging open. O. M. G.

  7. Katina says:

That’s so cute – them on a leash is hysterical. But I do hope they are like rescued or something because that is an unusual pet….

  8. Ri L. says:

Oh, I want one! But I think my cat would get mad.

  9. El Zapato says:

Ubercute, until they get a head cold. Then it’s off to Costco for the megapack of tissues.

OMG who nu they were sooooo cute and snuggly?

  12. Pliny says:

I have never heard of these animals as pets. He/she certainly looks happy and well cared for!

  13. Katina says:

That’s so cute – them on a leash is hysterical. But I do hope they are like rescued or something because that is an unusual pet….

  14. pyrit says:

Oh! Oh! Come to my kitchen! The ants are small, but if you want a snack…
Free ants for ya! Right here. I got ‘em. I’m just squishing ‘em, what a waste of food!

  15. pyrit says:

Tell ya what, you eat my ants, I’ll paint your nails! Deal?

  16. brinnann says:

Oooh, they’re so long you could put all kinds of fancy designs on them!

  17. brinnann says:

Theo, why’d you throw that poor sheep in the water? Don’t you know wool shrinks?

  18. Theo says:

No no, silly. That’s only after you throw them in the *dryer*.

  19. Angie says:

    Wow. So not cute.

  20. DoodleyDog says:

Creepy….and yet, cute. Can’t quite put my finger on why.

  21. This thing is tremendously adorable and a bit frightening all in the same shot.

  22. Rosie A. says:

    Awww?

    Yeah, awww!

  23. Meow says:

This is cute, but bothersome. Are Anteaters some trendy exotic pet?

  24. Khadija says:

i sure hope they were saved from some sort of danger cause if not then keeping them as pets is just plain wrong. the middle finger claw is quite sizeable hehe

  25. Theo says:

Trendy, no. Go read the FAQ.
    http://anteaterentertainment.com/FAQ.html

  26. Khadija says:

oh derrh just saw the pics in the gallery from the link Theo provided.. why not take the remaining teeny bit of their dignity? don’t like this. they probably dream of termite hills and no human to be seen anywhere near.

  27. pyrit says:

I’ll paint ants, on your nails! Ah, bad idea. OK, you know black would look mahvelous. Do you like to listen to Streisand?
Peeps are trying to comprehend you by the way. I’m personally cool with the proboscis thing.

  28. lou says:

Very odd to see them as a pet, but if it was raised to be domestic, I just hope it has access to live out its natural behaviors! I’ll give the owner the benefit of the doubt and just focus on how CUTE this lil guy or gal is!

  29. jmuhj says:

Anerabuhls. Bettur inza furrust uv reign, tho.

  30. Golden says:

Unbearably CUTE. But must be A LOT OF WORK!

  31. Very, very strange. I’m glad someone has found a critter to love and take care of. Love that pic of the tam snorgling the arm.

P.S. Not sure if this is right or wrong? Read the link Teho included before making a comment.

  32. nads says:

    Creepola.

  33. Why the long face? ;——-)

  34. lurkertype says:

I want to rent this McSchnoz to come to my kitchen and hoover up all the ants that are infesting.

Then he can romp in the yard where they come from. Moar ants than he could ever eat.

  35. fish eye no miko says:

The snuggling picture (#4) made me totally squee! OMG, so cuuuute!

    Yay for cute unusual animals!

  36. 260Oakley says:

Anybody else kinda freaked out by the big schnozzles? And no Freudian analysis, please. Sometimes a schnozzle is just a schnozzle… a big scary schnozzle perched above some righteously frightening nails.

  37. HonorH says:

Look at the silvery fur! So pretty! These are rather adorable. Coulda used a few at my old college apartment–it took spraying, obsessive cleaning and a bunch of “ant hotels” to chase the little buggers out.

  38. steph says:

    OMG SOOOOO SWEET!!! XOXOXOXO

  39. steph says:

    OMG SOOOOO SWEET!!! XOXOXOXO

  40. steph says:

see that i got so excited i posted it twice!

  41. wen1 says:

This bothers me. She took in the animal because it was “too weak to survive in the wild”, but she bought it. She is not a licensed rehabilitator and seems to have no intention of returning the animal to the wild. Yes, it is just an animal, but it looks plenty healthy right now and should not be kept as a pet.

  42. chanpon says:

This went from: “not so sure it’s cute” to “redonkulous cute” (snuggling next to arm, making circles by playing kissy face with anteater 2) to “cute but kind of disturbing” (big claws protruding from blankie, extra close up of snouty-ness) to “kill me dead cute” (anteater trying to act like my cats on laptop and in my purse).

  43. Jim says:

Reminds me of “The Doubtful Guest” by Edward Gorey.

  44. Fuzzy says:

I think it rather silly to say they dream of being far from people when one is shown hugging a people. It does show them getting outside too.

  45. suzanne says:

    Oh nos! So not cute!

  46. Mel says:

Yes, it is just an animal, but it looks plenty healthy right now and should not be kept as a pet.

Healthy AND acclimated to humans. Maybe she might be better off in a zoo (and maybe not), but the wild is probably not a good place for her anymore (especially since “the wild” would involve overseas shipping).

I wouldn’t get an anteater from the wild, though–it’s more likely she got sick after she was caught or during travel.

  47. dub1 says:

    Yep, the buzzkillers are soapboxing.
    [gets out muh schoolmarm glasses]
**Well-cared for** domesticated wild animals live three times longer than their wild cousins, and don’t die of parasites, starvation or murder by predators. It’s not in a too-small cage, cuz it’s PADDLING IN THE CREEK AND CLIMBING AN APPLE TREE, AND I’M NOT!!
So chillz, pills, if you want to anthropormorphise [I see your lips moving] dig the contented hexpression on the honkshuing eatanter.
    Cyute!!

  48. My sister's cat is a blob says:

Well, that’s certainly not fair. Someone has TWO anteaters (apparently, anyway, according to the photos), and I have NONE. None anteaters in my house. So not fair. (shakes head despairingly)

I must say, an anteater is an amusing mascot, but very cute.

But still not as odd as UC Santa Cruz. I mean, how can you say “Go Fighting Banana Slugs!” with a straight face?

  72. Decca says:

Can I have one? We have a random invasion of ants that is driving me crazy.

  73. Oce says:

    OMG.

    WANT.

that’s adorable! I’ve always had a soft spot for anteaters, especially with the giant ones, how the lil’ babies ride on mom’s back. cuuute!

  74. Michelle says:

Jim! <3 the Doubtful Guest (and anything else Gorey). :D

  75. anner says:

holy sh…jesus ch…oh my g…wow. i mean wow. that certainly put the “overload” in cuteoverload. and the cute. but also the overload. big time.

  76. luckycliff says:

this prosh anteater is ready to snarfle up some Raspberry Ants!

  77. Lúcia says:

What part of WILD animal these people don’t get? My God, a leash? Since when domesticated wild animals are wild animals?
And for God sake, you actually BUY wild animals? That’s crime! Such a shame most of the people around here doesn’t give a shit about these animals. I didn’t know C.O. suported wildlife trafficking.

  78. butter says:

Oh my. Anteaters certainly are flipping adorable (especially the giant kind), but I do have to wonder about the legality of owning these critters.

Lucia, CO doesn’t support anything except cute. Like how DVD commentary dooesn’t necessarily represent the views of whatever company producing the DVD.

  79. butter says:

So evidently owning tamanduas is legal wherever TamanduaGirl lives.

    http://anteaterentertainment.com/FAQ.html

  80. Laura says:

I… I… don’t know about these critters. They are kinda freaky but attractive. Like the fellas I always fall for.

    I’ll take two!

  81. dub1 says:

Irony alert: My gods, don’t bring that wolf in the cave to save us from the sabretooth tiger! It’s a crime! Yes, much better to let it die a natural death from starvation and for us to be eaten.

Although I personally don’t want to wake up at dawn to milk the formicophages, imagine what would have happened to humans if wild goats, pigs, oxen, horses, etc., had never been domesticated. We’d still be in trees being eaten by jaguars.
And somehow I think the eatanter’s people give more than a shizzle about it.
And language, please! Let’s be civilised if not civil.

  82. butter says:

Fie, Theo beat me to it. :/

  83. Theresa says:

Holy Moses, this is like reasoning we shouldn’t had drugs, because God created bacteria to kill us, and by golly, who are we to mess with God’s will? If some helpless baby of any species turned up on my doorstep, I would try to find out and do whatever I could to save the baby’s life, and see that it was safe and healthy. If that one baby ended up on the end of a leash, with me on the other end, it wouldn’t mean that I supported profiting from trafficking the little beast’s relatives!!!

  84. Jenny says:

Too much kyoooooootnesssss! Him in a red hawnessssssssss! Sniffy sniffy snoo snoo y’all …

  85. Kaye says:

You got it, taj! :) Though the BC anteater is pretty awesome too.

  86. Ant says:

Don’t support these ant eaters!! [grin]

  87. Lee says:

Theresa: Like a south american wild animal would appear magically on your doorstep, and the only thing you could do is to keep it in a leash, lol.

  88. Gryph says:

I would like to point out that I enjoy the “domesticating wild animals” protests even more when you see the post that follows it – a species saved through domestication and rehabbed to the wild. I don’t think every species needs to be domesticated. But I also don’t think that ever domestication of a wild animal needs to be demonized like we are trying to oppress all animal species.

  89. SqueakySquirrel says:

Oh my!!! Soooo gorgeous :D I’ve always loved anteaters and this set is just jawdroppingly cute! Encore please!

  90. teeno says:

    cutest animal ever

  91. Subhangi says:

    EEEEEEE!!! Tamanduas! I WUB tamanduas!!!

    [snorgle∞]

  92. Aesthetica says:

    @260Oakley

    I had the same thought.

also, something about the size of an anteater’s schnozzle being comparable to the size of an anteater’s… uh… you know. in other words, i don’t think this anteater needs to drive an expensive sports car to get the ladies, if you catch my drift.

  93. Hon Glad says:

    So lets celebrate
    I’m feeling great
I’m the guy that found the lost chord.
    (Schnozzle Durante)

  94. Shimmering Mercury says:

    NOT cute.

NOT fun for the poor wild animal to be kept in captivity and walked around on a leash!

NOT ethical for people to pretend to ‘rescue’ them only in order to serve as a respite their own boredom.

Disappointed that you posted this, Meg.

  95. Poohbear says:

Amaaaaazingk! Thank euwwww Meggs and Tehos! what a way to start the day. Love it because over here in this time zone there are always new postingks to wake up to. Meggums and the commentpeeps get busy while I’m sleepingk. A comforting thought. :)

  96. Poohbear says:

Nuff, nuff, snorfle, snorfle, nuff nuff [[tamandua foraging sounds]] *loooong soooft sliiide* [[sound of nuffs going up that snout]]

  97. bookmonstercats says:

I want the beautiful soft silky shiny fur (hair?), but only if the A-A is still inside it, natch. I don’t normally approve of trying to domesticate “obviously” exotic wild animals, but some people can make a success of it, like here *ducks*

  98. nuri says:

Butter: a giant anteater actually killed a zoo keeper in Argentina a couple of years ago.
    [*citation needed - Ed.]

There are people who suceed at keeping a wild animal as a mascot while others cannot manage with a wee dog.

As a rule of thunmb, though, I don’t support this sort of display of wild beasts kept as pets, since I believe encourage the whimse for keeping such animals in the sort of people who cannot even take care of a Tamagotchi.

  99. Susie says:

I hopes they send them back to the forest soon! SO CUTE!!!!

  100. Trinky dink says:

For Edward Gorey fans: Kinda (actually a lot!) looks like the Doubtful Guest. Apt discription of an anteater in the house, yes?

  101. Arielemc says:

    Those things are gross.

  102. Kwistee says:

    These are just too much.
    I can’t handle them.

I NEED to have an anteater as a pet now.
    It HAS to happen.

…is that even legal? To keep them as pets..? I wonder if it would get along with my cat..?

  103. Babs says:

Other Mike: That was so bad, it’s good.

Them are some spoilt tamanduas (tamanduae?). The snoozin’ one is so qte. The big claw do skeer me some, tho.

  104. layla42 says:

    D’awww!
They’re so freaking adorable and look so verry snorgle-able.

    Other Mike: that was great.
Teho: best hovertexts. All made of win.

  105. Wait a minute.. I saw these guys on Ugly Overload just the other day!
    http://uglyoverload.blogspot.com/
    Pick a side, anteaters!

  106. ThreeCatNight says:

Seems cute when it snorgles, but it’s not something I’d personally like to have as a pet (however exotic). It’d scare me a bit, frankly.

  107. ediew says:

I can’t tell. Is there hair/fur on their tails?

  108. Tinky says:

sometimes, what is usually a “wild” animal in a home setting, are rehab cases or somehow connected to zoos – and on rare occassions actually pets. What i don’t like is the people that just assume everything in a home setting is a pet, wanting one, and just supposing he or she can handle it. I do not encourage pet owner n00bs to get exotic pets/undomesticated species to keep as pets. From what i’ve seen, there are usually two people who do have them – people who actually really *do* know what they’re doing (you go, peeps <3) - and people who have no clue whatsoever and shouldn't own an animal at all. I agree with earlier posts that this tends to encourage the latter kind. the amount of people claiming to want one just get my hairs to stand on end =P.

That SAID, there ARE people out there who know what they’re doing and handle it well. Those ant eaters are the snuggliest i’ve seen, and they do look healthy :B. pretty nosies.

  109. Hope says:

This little thing is so cute and i think it is very interesting how you take care of it by looking at the picures. Its adorable im jealous. :D

  110. snorglepup says:

Hey peeps. I read the links and viewed all the pictures.
Awesome critters! Ads a new meaning to “climbing the walls”!!

  111. blair says:

if you have three or more you risk being known as the “anteater lady” on your block…

  112. Sprock says:

Just TRY to imagine the honk shoos coming from that schnozz in Picture #4. People, I implore you, JUST TRY TO IMAGINE!

  113. brinnann says:

Disclaimer: This comment is neither meant to bait the nuffs nor argue with them. This is a genuine question.

Why do some people get so up-in-arms when another says “WANT!”? Most of the time, that “WANT” is not meant in a serious way, that they truly intend to go out and acquire an anteater/baby seal/panda/other exotic pet. It’s merely an expression of “that animal is so awesome, it’d be great to have one, but I know it’s not possible” wishful thinking. Why do some reply with “this is bad, people will try to own these wild animals” when the initial statement doesn’t seem to be intended as a serious aspiration to start their own exotic collection of animals? The peeps here are all animal-lovers. They don’t want to see these precious babies taken from the wild to become pets. If that happens to be the case in the photo, most don’t condemn the owner of such a pet, because we don’t know if that’s how they happened to have this animal in their care. I’m betting 9 times out of 10, it’s a rehabilitation situation.

  114. Metz says:

    Exotic!
till this very moment I never thought of anteaters as cuddly cute…I’ve been so blind!

  115. brinnann says:

Sorry. That didn’t turn out as impartial as I intended, now that I’ve re-read it.

  116. Katrina says:

Now, I have peonies. I am very happy to be a respite home for your Anteater AFTER peony season.
brinnann-I agree with you and what a well-said, well-reasoned comment.

Dead ant, dead ant, deadantdeadantdeadant-the Pink Panther Song……..
And, should you ever find a picture of a Giant Anteater, could you try to find a picture that includes his/her fluffy tailio? That is the tail I would want if I could have a tail. Hmmm? I’ll try, too. Thanks!

  117. Kar says:

While mama appears to be taking excellent care of those anties, (love the idea of Grandpa being the snack giver so they associate him with good things), I don’t think that I could have one of those around me.

Even if they are apparent cuddlers and cute blanket stealers.

Those big claws are freakin’ scary!!!

  118. Yay! Stewie and Pua made it to Cute Overload! I have been watching them on flicker foreva.

  119. Sandra says:

Their fur/hair(?) looks so silky!! I’m thinking they use Pantene. :)

What a strange world we live in!

  121. Adrienne says:

Ok, these aren’t cute. Not even a little bit! They are skeery. I sez more kittens!!!!!

  122. kk3 says:

Ok…just because everyone is saying that they “want on” doesn’t mean that they will actually go out and get one. Hey, I want a polar bear cub, but I know I C-A-N-T. Besides, he would probably eat me some day! Ha. Even dog breeds. I l-o-v-e Border Collies (my favorite dog). But they need lots of attention and if they have a “job to do” that’s even better. IF they get bored they can really misbehave and be distructive. I want one…but a border is not right for me. Thus, I have a kitty! We fit perfectly together. If you read this lady’s FAQ, you can see the amount of research and dedication she has put into this! You go girl! They are amazingly cute. By reading her FAQ 99.99999% of us will know that they are not the pet for us, but we all will still *squee* and yell that we want one! Enjoy! Maybe she will let us all snorgle hers for a small fee! :)

  123. catablob says:

    jim: Yes!

    “he stayed for breakfast

    all the syrup and pancakes
    and part of a plate.”

  124. Katrina says:

I want a giraffe. There are so few in Connecticut, though, it seems unlikely I could find ‘play dates’ for it. We have some pretty low bridges, too and I don’t know how to say ‘duck’ in Giraffe. Anybody?
Alas- when I hit a big lottery, I’ll adopt one that needs assistance. They’ll send me pictures of its progress and I can write to it, and say inspirational things, once I learn Giraffe, that is. So far no translation programs on the market, though.

For those wondering why Pua wasn’t returned to the wild after she was rehabilitated: she’d formed a bond with TamanduaGirl; separating the two would’ve been detrimental to Pua…among other things.

  134. Kimmy says:

    It’s Pua! :D :D

I’ll have to show this to hubby. He loves seeing her antics at Pet Talk. :)

  135. Lúcia says:

And that’s why anteaters are disappearing in Brazil. Because some people just want to satisfy their ego by buying an exotic animal. Just to remind you guys, in my country it is still a federal crime to sell or buy this kind of animal. I gently ask everyone to read this site (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anteater ) , it’s not an excellent site (some important information lacking) but it’s worth the reading.

  136. Jaye says:

Lucia, I suspect it has a lot more to do with habit destruction than the *extremely* rare case of a person wanting one as a pet.

  137. Jaye says:

Um, that was supposed to say “habitat,” not habit.

  138. Sara says:

Wow. You can really tell it is related to the sloth. how cute is that!

  139. That’s it–I’m SERIOUS.

I *want one* and I’m going out to buy an anteater this weekend.

    hee hee–Kidding ;-)

  140. spb says:

Lucia forgot the rule about reading all the previous comments before posting your own comment. Hun… exotic pet ownership has already been covered, ad nausium.

  141. Raemie L. says:

Eee! The eye capsules, the velvety fur, the oddly cute schnozz. I can imagine the ears flickering. So cute!

Ahahaha, I like that I’m not the only one thinking of Edward Gorey’s “The Doubtful Guest.”

LOL@ Ant and “No Bleen” thong concept.

  142. Gail says:

    LOL’ing at Gryph & Theo!

These anteaters are so GD cute. One of the less pleasant memories I have of living in northern CA was the invasion of ants! If only there’d been an anteater visitation service!!! Certainly better than using pesticides, right????

  143. J. Bo says:

SO VERY TOTALLY “Doubtful Guest,” Jim, Michelle, Trinky dink and catablob.

  144. A says:

Well, I hope this is a case of sending the snufflesnuffles back into the habitat to which he/she is accustomed to.

  145. B. says:

I checked the link and it said that the anteaters were rescued and “would not have survived” in the wild. Hummm..
Just because you’re obsessed with some exotic animal, does it really justify to fly it all the way from South America so it can please you at the comfort of your home?

  146. Nastassia says:

    …not cute :[

  147. Jewelia says:

Freaky little buggers. I prefer ants, thank you.
