Caturday workout

Cue the treadmill mix, it’s about to get exercisy

LOL, Michelle S. LOL on the two-paw action.

// UPDATE — looks like you’ll have to go to YouTube to see this video, now – Ed. //

Comments

  1. would be funnier if they got them going really fast and then hit emergency stop so that they shoot forward

[How 'bout we try that with you, first? You know, dry run.- Ed.]

  2. SayYesh says:

    hysterical

  3. Those cats are TOO cute-and determined!!!

  4. GreyCat says:

    Beyond redonk cuteness!

Tank, that isn’t very kind of you.

  5. I don’t know what’s so great about two-legged treadmilling. I do that all the time.

  6. I applaud their effort to work off all those kitty treats. (I think this is the only time in my life I’ve ever enjoyed a treadmill.)

  7. I’m making the same exactly squeals of laughter as the cat videographer, even on the second view. Ah, thanks for the laugh.

  8. Is this something the cats just…do? Of their own volition?

  9. bunnyluv says:

wow i just watched this on youtube and then i was like how can this nto be on cuteoevrload…and whatyaknow

    OOOOOMG. Me too, Shelley!!

    Dying! Laughing! OMG!

I love how the calico trips over her own HEAD every time she climbs on! OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG. And the two-paw action. OMG.

  12. hi-larious

  13. girlnextdoortn says:

My favorite part is that the cats are doing this because they like it, not because someone tossed them on a treadmill! It’s really funny because of that!!!!!

    That calico cracked me up.

  14. The chick laughing in the background is as funny as the cats!

  15. Ker-snorf! Best use of treadmill EVAR. My kitty would prolly just sleep on it… kinda like me!

  16. girlnextdoortn, that’s my favorite part as well :0)

  17. My cat would not even look at a treadmill. The two paw action had me on the floor laughing.

Just waiting for some commentroversy(sp) to start….

  18. Aaahahahaha! Love the determination in those little paws even when Mama kept beeping up the speed!

  19. k. o'dee says:

Poor tabby just. Could not. Do it.

    I understand the feeling. Meh.

  25. That is the cutest thing I have seen in a long time. I love those kitties!

  26. Theresa says:

My cats just say, “No thanks, but you go right aheadzzzzzzzzzzzz . . .”

  27. Theresa says:

PS My cats *are* interested in the treadmill, but only to the extent of trying to stop it, or trying to figure out “Where does it *go*??” Actually get on it and walk on it? Forget eet!

  28. Comedy GOLD!

  29. Omg. The video’s over and I’m still laughing.

  30. “Meh, two paws is just fine for my cawt-io workout today.”

    LOL!!! :D

  31. someone got this music from diiiiiisney worrrrrld : )

  32. Remind me to pee BEFORE I watch this video again.

  33. Another Angela says:

A perfect CO post! That was hysterical!

  34. binky-mama says:

TOO FUNNY! Somebody needs to send this to the lasagna-eating Garfield cat as motivation.

  35. I loved that, the look of determination on the cats’ faces! Wish I had that much motivation.

  36. Okay, if these were my cats, I would SO have a greenscreen set up behind that treadmill so I could make a chase sequence!

  37. Laughing my head off here!!☺

  38. Khadija says:

burning the calories. wish i had their determinay-shons

  39. Oh boy – this isn’t going to be popular, but in my opinion the video is documenting an event that could quickly turn into an act of animal cruelty.

Considering how many warnings are given to humans before they use a treadmill, cats on treadmills, especially with long fur, could go very, very wrong.

The concept is cute, and I would have felt better if the owners had not so sharply increased the speed, but overall, I would encourage others to not recreate the stunt at home :/

  40. …”Sparky”, eh?

  41. Too funny!!!

Hmmmm, all of us (me and 4-leggeddy ones) could use this!!!!!

  42. Martha in Washington says:

I wish I had these kitties motivation to get on my own treadmill. Does laughing as you watch the cats count as exercise?

  43. D. Kickham says:

My tubby tabby could use this. So could my little Buddy boy with the Buda-Belly.

  44. lmao the grey one seems to be genuinely enjoying it! That’s adorable! And the poofy one actually running on it… soooo cute!

  45. kmslearn says:

Cute, but I’m with Lydia…I was reel skeered their tails would get caught!

  46. Lydia,
Why did you feel the need??? Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy???????? “Cruelty”???? Jeebus! Everything’s fine. Let it be!

  47. I wonder how they discovered that the cats would do that?

  48. I shouldn’t laugh but hahahahahahahahahaha, very funny :-)

  49. Sparky must have some pretty good forearms! Probably needs some glute action now!

  50. I laughed so hard when the calico gave up and plopped off the end…

If that counted as cruelty, when the cats got on of their own accord, then it must be cruel to let a cat outside too. Think of all those sharp edges! Oh noes!!

[Well, that might not be the best example... though more because of the cars & wild predators... - Ed.]

  51. Wish I could get my fat cat on that. She needs to loose four pounds according to the vet!

  52. Meriweather says:

    @west:

I bet the camera gal was doing her treadmill walk one day, dutiful and bored, and suddenly, with a mighty *ankletwine*, she had company.

  53. A treadmill isn’t ‘cruelty’ any more than owning a rocking chair is cruelty. Sure you can rock over a cats tail, but usually do it once on accident, and they don’t go near it again. These cats have obviously been around the treadmill for awhile and know not to stick their paws under it. The tabby even seems to have a determined excerise plan going on.

  54. There’s a link to a “cat wheel” that appears after you watch the kitty on the treadmill. It’s hilarious.

There are a bunch of treadmill kitty videos on youtube. I don’t get the attraction to it…I really don’t… :P

  55. wagthedogma says:

    “Jaaane, stop this crazy thiiing!!!”

  56. Silent Meow says:

Those cats should be my personal trainer. LOL!

  57. Annie J says:

So adorable! Diggin’ the two-paw action :)

  58. AliceBlue says:

It’s like that Kliban drawing of the cat with a gazillion legs.

  59. I would be so much more willing to use the treadmill if the kittehs would join me! But I might get hurt when I fall down from the laughing!:)

  60. Kricket says:

I totally identify with the tabby- my front half has much more motivation than my back half (er, lower half).

If there were Geeky Typing Olympics I’d totally be there winning the gold… so long as my chair had wheels so I could scoot from event to event.

  61. Patty P says:

LOL at the two-paw lazier action of the tabby. Love at 1:03 when he looks at the calico, trying to figure out how she stays in one place on the treadmill, not having figured out it takes constant quick action on all four legs. The woman snickering in the background was just as good!

  62. PooperScoopums says:

I agree with Lydia, I don’t think it’s an act of animal crulety, especially because the cats jumped on the treadmill on their own, but the sharply increasing speed had me a bit nervous. Things can happen very quickly…I wouldn’t want my own pets to play with a treadmill, that’s for sure

  63. Yitzysmommie says:

OMG!!! I’m short of breath from laughing so hard and then watching it a second time & laughing just as hard.
Thank you Meg, for this day before Mother’s day present.

  64. That was freaking hysterical. I was laughing out loud, I even had some tears of laughter. I can’t say why it’s so funny, but it is. I think when the one cat tripped and then rode the treadmill to the end was funny. Now how did they get the cats to want to get on it?

  65. between tank and lydia i think i’m just going to stop reading the comments from now on.

those kitties are so cute, they’re having fun, and they were not left unattended. so cute and adorables!!

  66. That’s hilarious. The look of determination on the little cat faces was priceless.

To the ’nuffers – as any cat owner knows, a cat’s not going to do what it doesn’t want to do. When these cats had had enough, they walked away. No harm done. Chill!

  67. Amazing!!! Now if I can just get MY cat to do that, instead of her just begging for treats all the time. How did you do that??? Wow!

  68. Lydia is right, but the term may be wrong: not cruelty, but maybe “unsafe” -? There is the potential for something getting caught along the edges of the treadmill. I’d say, just watch the speed and never take your hands off the control.

  69. Nicolletta says:

    Run, kitties! Feel the burn!

  70. Best. Post. EVAH.

(I too would have been keeping an eye on the long fur, but really – it’s fur. Any that got caught would just SHED, if it was my cat! She gives off poofs of it if you just LOOK at her!)

  71. Michelle says:

I have a treadmill nearly identical to this one. There is only one small place a cat could get caught and it’s on the underside. The belt is fabric on a teflon-coated surface and the roller pulls the belt *away* from the fender at the front, not into.

Yes, I know. Cats manage to get into all sorts of trouble and danger no matter how safe you keep your home. I had a cat who tore a tiny hole in a window screen, squeezed through, and fell three floors to a concrete driveway. Another time I came home from work and she was hanging by her hipbones from the headboard of my bed. She’d squeezed halfway through the rails and got stuck. I have no clue how long she was there. Plus countless other accidents during her life. She died happy at the age of 20. Can’t exactly cat-proof a house if they’re adventurous and half-simple. ;)

  72. Aesthetica says:

jezebel.com has been horning on teh qte ak-shon lately. they posted this cats-on-treadmills clip a couple weeks ago.

    http://jezebel.com/388537/two-girls-one-cup-meet-two-cats-one-treadmill

there are a couple of other cats-on-treadmills clips posted in the comments.

  73. Aesthetica says:

okay i really need to share this one from the jezebel comments. the title really says it all.

“Shrimp Running On A Treadmill With The Benny Hill Theme”

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMO8Pyi3UpY

  74. TurboFloof says:

I cracked up right along with the filmographer kitteh mama too! The calico was not to be undone – her determination was awesome – especially the head-flop, paw-roll and then… perfect recovery.

Tears still in my eyes from the laughing…

  75. Not funny…

  76. Shannon says:

No one has mentioned the “concentrating ears.” Could also be “frustrated ears” but it looks more like concentration and focus to me. That’s my fave part!

  77. So kewt! It’s not cruelty if the kitties did it all by themselves. It’s not like the owners forced them on the treadmill.

  78. chanpon says:

I’d be willing to hit the treadmill more regularly if my kitties joined me. :)

  79. Mrs. Catlabash says:

I don’t think Lydia meant cruelty as the owner inflicting cruelty on the kitties by forcing them to do this. I think she meant that because of their general floofiness (compared to the hairless munkees who own ‘em), there’s a risk that they might get snagged by a part of the machinery, which could occur in an instant as a freak accident.

I don’t agree with her, but I think that was her point.

  80. You have saved the day with this one! Bravo!
    Sandra Evertson

  81. Raemie L. says:

I like how the calico tries different ways to stay on the treadmill by jumping onto it from different angles. “Lemme try jumping from the front part this time!”

@Aesthetica: Good lord, I think the “Shrimp Running On A Treadmill…” vid clip beats the kittehs playing on treadmills in pointlessness. Redonk. O.o The good ol’ Benny Hill Theme’s cheesiness does make it work, eh?

  82. I honestly have tears STREAMING down my face. I can’t control my laughter! HILARIOUS!

  83. Monimie says:

This is ridiculous. I NEED to join this gym.

  84. Raemie L. says:

Oh, but I must add, kittehs on treadmill vid clips PRWN the shrimp on treadmill clip in cuteness and teh funneh.

  85. Juniper Jupiter says:

“Two cats baiwly awake. We can webuild them. We have the teknology, gentamen. We can make them betta than they think they alweady awe than us. Betta…stwonga…FASTA!!!”

The Six Fiddy cat and the Myopic Womcat!!!
    :D

This is what happens when you drive for three hours to see Crater Lake only to find out you’re two weeks too early and you have to go back home next Saturday! :(

  86. Lemongrass says:

This had me laughing like crazy.

As to “cruelty”, I often wonder what could motivate anyone to post something like that and so clearly make herself look ridiculous. Don’t you KNOW people are going to roll their eyes at your comment?

  87. “would be funnier if they got them going really fast and then hit emergency stop so that they shoot forward

[How 'bout we try that with you, first? You know, dry run.- Ed.]

    OK!

  88. I’m not an easy LOLer, but this had me in hysterics. Something about the earnest confused expressions on these kitties faces.

  89. The horror… THE HORROR!

    (Well, actually, “THE HILARITY!”)

    Awesome, danger-free kitty antics.

  90. Hey peeps, let’s not nuff on somebody who was obviously trying NOT to be a nuff. She is just expressing her concern/opinion in a respectful way. Jeez, let’s not prove the REAL nuffers right about us not allowing other opinions.

  91. My husband just called up from downstairs wanting to know what I was laughing so hard about. This is hilarious!!!

  92. Happenstance says:

    Cruelty? Hardly.

But the guy ramping up the speed to the point the cats can’t possibly keep up is a bit of a jerk, yes.

  93. Creepy Sheep says:

“If that counted as cruelty, when the cats got on of their own accord, then it must be cruel to let a cat outside too. Think of all those sharp edges! Oh noes!!

[Well, that might not be the best example... though more because of the cars & wild predators... - Ed.]“

Which was my point exactly (although the only “predator” over here is someone else’s pet dog)… but I guess my point hinged on my feeling that it’s unthinkable to keep a cat indoors, they’re too independent. I’m more of the attitude that if you live somewhere you really can’t let your cat out, you maybe shouldn’t have a cat. But then, my introductory cat was a giant marmie boy, a total softy with humans, but he could certainly look after himself.

  94. catablob says:

There must be an enormous can of tuna at the front of that treadmill. Enormous!

  95. Hon Glad says:

    Kitty says WTF.

  96. Well, if the treadmill is too dangerous, you gotta come arrest me- I am now teh Crutch-monster, terror of 5 cats (though Onyx, my own kitty, will occasionally try to play chicken with me in the hall).

Be funny if my friend’s cat would join him on the treadmill. we call her rump roast due to similarity of shape.

  97. AuntieMame says:

“kittehs on treadmill vid clips PRWN the shrimp on treadmill”

Good one, Raemie L. PRWN! Hee!

“Hey peeps, let’s not nuff on somebody who was obviously trying NOT to be a nuff. She is just expressing her concern/opinion in a respectful way. Jeez, let’s not prove the REAL nuffers right about us not allowing other opinions.”

I can’t help but agree with Gail. A respectful expression of concern is not the same thing as nuffing.

  98. Kathleen says:

    Faster, faster!

  99. I agree with “The concept is cute, and I would have felt better if the owners had not so sharply increased the speed, but overall, I would encourage others to not recreate the stunt at home”. I enjoyed it until they kept cranking up the speed for their own entertainment. :(

  100. PheonixKarr says:

I love how the poofy one is running, running, RUNNING, so hard, so fast, so – eh I’m bored. *drops off treadmill*

    *examines the people with camera*

    Phfft.

    *goes to find snack*

  101. lifespan of indoor cat: 15+ years…lifespan of outdoor cat: research for yourself…much much shorter. Take your cat on walks if you would like it to go outside.

Also I would not say this is cruel but yes dangerous my grandmothers cat killed itself on a treadmill when she left it running to grab some water it was horrible.

  102. CATAPULLLLLLT!

    (gets some much-needed water)

  103. “lifespan of indoor cat: 15+ years…lifespan of outdoor cat: research for yourself…much much shorter. Take your cat on walks if you would like it to go outside.”

Maybe my family’s just been lucky, but ours have all lived well into their teens as outdoor cats, aforementioned marmie was 17 when we finally had to put him to sleep because of severe arthritis.
Also, I’m not sure life length is the only measure of life quality.

  104. momof2kitties says:

Yeah…count me in with the concerned people, too. I witnessed my friend’s four year old boy’s gruesome injury to his hand when he stuck it into the treadmill, ya know, just to see what would happen. Not pretty.

The video was funny and all, but I cringed when the treadmill got sped up, knowing it only takes a fraction of a second for disaster to occur.

  105. Also; take a cat for a walk? Sorry, not sure I can cope with jumping over a 6 foot fence, crawling under a hedge or chasing after rabbits.
A cat is not a dog.

  106. U b backslaidin’. An tew-steppin.

Hey, Khadija, izzat u? Iz mii, muhj.

  107. Hilarious!!! X D

  108. Faster Pussycat! Run! Run!

  109. Creepy Sheep.

My two cats are indoor only. I live in a city and therefore they are not permitted outside (except excursions on the back deck under supervision).

My cats are happy, healthy and content. One actually refuses to even stick his nose out on the deck, preferring it inside.

And some cats actually enjoy taking walks, either on a leash or no leash. Depends on the personality of the cat and the bond with the owner.

What worked out well for you is not going to work out well for others. I for one am not going to give up my happy, healthy content kittehs because someone holds the (rare) opinion that it’s better for the cat to be outside than inside.

And one request for everyone else. Can we not even hint at what may or may not have happened to someone else’s cat and a treadmill, or someone elses child and a treadmill? Some of us have vivid imaginations and are easily upset, and would rather not go there, thanks.

  110. Caitlin says:

I’ve seen a lot of great posts here, but this one wins for RECORD HILARITY. I’ve squealed in adoration, certainly, but I have NEVER laughed this hard at a CO post before. OMG.

  111. Creepy Sheep: Do you think that packs of wild dogs stroll around sidewalk squares? Dogs do it because they are taught. Cats can be too. Go to the humane society and ask to walk one of their dogs without training! They’ll drag you through quite an impossible trail as well.

    ANYWAY. That video is fantastic.

  112. Anne Boleyn says:

I kept thinking how the two legged treader is really building up some litter box digging muscles.

  113. I love how gracefully and noiselessly the calico plops off at the end of the treadmill! When her paws start going really fast, you can hear her determined little kitty footsteps, but then she just stops and glides silently onto the floor. Hilarious.

  114. My favorite part was at the beginning when the calico did a “fly on”. That cracked me up! Yes, just supervise them and keep the speed down. They will be fine….and healthier!!!

  115. Electra says:

That’s great and cute and all (not nuffing!)… but my cats are just not as smart and slim as these ones… so don’t try this at home. While jogging on my ‘mill I have been been known to retrieve a grazed cat from underneath the back-end. Now they stay behind a closed door… waiting for me under my aerobics step in the other room. What is it with these danger monsters?

  116. charliewabba says:

If she had 2 more cats and 5 more treadmills, she could do a really cool music video. The hard part be putting the little bitty vest and glasses on the bald kitty.

  117. AWESOME vid… really motivated me to get on the PreCor this morning…

ALL — the thing that really sets off my alarm bells is when someone drops the “C” word… cruelty… when there was no such thing going on. Iffy? Maybe. Possibility for fur snaggage? I guess. But cruelty? Please don’t water down such a word with something like this. It’s the epitome of “nuff” for me, when someone puts on the fear-nanny-blame hat and harshes the Qte.

  118. MUST run on treadmeeeeel! MUST DO EEEEEEEEET!

  119. I just want to add something, maybe some clarity, to the discussion of “cruelty.” I thought this video was pretty funny and the cats are adorable, and obviously they know how to work the treadmill. but I do see a cruel instinct (or, as someone above said, evidence of the owner being a bit of a jerk) at work in the speeding up of the treadmill. It wasn’t funny or cute enough to see the cats run on the treadmill at a speed they could just about keep up with? The human just had to ramp up the velocity to make it even funnier for them to watch. I think that shows a lack of empathy. At that point, to me, the laughter became more tone of “laughing at” rather than “laughing with,” which just seems, you know…. small. They’re animals, and they can be funny, but they’re not your clowns, after all. Again, cats on a treadmill who are having fun = cute and not mean; zipping up the speed so they fall off the back and you can have a good larf = mean.

  120. Ermine:
dogs are pack animals, they learn to stick with humans when they believe themselves to be subordinate in their pack. Cats are not pack animals, they are independent.
I’m not saying cats can’t be got used to indoor living, but to my mind, a cat is a highly independent, active animal, and doesn’t have the pack mentality that makes dogs behave the way they do.
I find it odd to be told my view that cats should be allowed to roam outside is a “rare” one, and a belief that cats are indoor creatures is the norm. In my experience, the opposite has been true.
But then I’m not a fan of Persians/scottish folds/pugs etc either, because I prefer animals closer to their wild type, strong and active.
Vampy, I didn’t suggest you had to give up the animals you already have, but I live in a similar situation to you at the moment, and just wouldn’t consider getting a cat to be an option.

  121. OMG.
I have tears running down my face, my stomach hurts and I think I might faint.

That may be the funniest thing I have seen in….welll……EVER.

    OMG. omg…..*plop*

  128. Great, I now watched it a second time, and I think I had better call the paramedics.

    *continued hysterical laughter*

  129. i like how they don’t want run.
    just walk quickly, lol.

  130. Get those cats together with the guys from OK Go!

  131. Yitzysmommie says:

Sasha’s Mum! you got me started all over again with hysterical laughter!!!
That would be me on the treadmill.

  132. This is hysterical.

SERIOUSLY? There’s commentraversy over this?? The cats obviously enjoy this; they can stop whenever they want (thank goodness they don’t!)

  133. Lu – Honestly? The cats obviously want to be there; no one’s “cruelly” forcing them on there. And the calico that fell off several times because the treadmill was too fast clearly didn’t get hurt while landing. The humans aren’t doing anything wrong.

  134. Probably has something to do with dealing with animal cruelty cases on a daily basis.

    Yawn.

Not sure why people get so exercised about a difference of opinion – plain common sense should make it pretty obvious an accident can happen if you place an animal or child on a treadmill. Life happens and pets get into trouble, but helping your pet get into trouble for your own amusement ups the ante.

Kind of like people who stick their cat on the ceiling fan. Could be cute, or could be a felony – depends. Roll those eyes!

  135. “I agree with “The concept is cute, and I would have felt better if the owners had not so sharply increased the speed, but overall, I would encourage others to not recreate the stunt at home”. I enjoyed it until they kept cranking up the speed for their own entertainment. :(“

    Me too Liz. Me too.

But they certainly do look like they are having fun! The calico is all for it, trying desperately to stay on, while the other kitty is all “doo do doo…I’m daintily prancing on the treadmil”

  136. Serena,

Yes, honestly. Did you actually read my comment, or did you write it off as “OMG kittiez is being forced to run on the treadmill!!1″ Read it again for comprehension and see that I’m talking, in a nonhysterical way. about what the people did, not how much fun it looks like the cats are having. Don’t just knee-jerk make fun of people who disagree with you.

  137. BTW, did everyone watch the video with the sound on? Because that can make a difference to how you perceive it. I was talking about it with a friend who watched it w/o sound, and she didn’t pick up on the fact that the people were speeding up the treadmill for their own amusement. If you did hear the soundtrack and still disagree with us, then I have nothing more to say; either you see “it” or you don’t.

  138. Cats bite and claw each others’ heads for their own amusement. Making a treadmill accelerate to a jogging pace is, well… since speeding up is awfuler than all the awful things that ever were, I won’t speed up, never speed up, never speed u-up! No sir.

  139. Wow, that was pretty mean of you.

[We internet sarcasts prefer the descriptor "pragmatically humorous," but we also understand that not everybody's down with the whole politically-correct thing... - Ed.]

  140. “I find it odd to be told my view that cats should be allowed to roam outside is a “rare” one, and a belief that cats are indoor creatures is the norm. In my experience, the opposite has been true.”

I’m guessing that you’re probably not from the US. I grew up believing it’s cruel to keep a cat inside, but after moving to North America I discovered that people here generally believe that it’s cruel *not* to keep them inside. Unless they grew up on a farm. It was a bit of a culture shock.

Cats can be happy either way, depending on their personality and how they spend their kittenhood. I have one who actually seems to get depressed if he’s kept inside, and another who can entertain herself indefinitely with a speck of dust on the carpet and won’t venture further than the patio.

I live in the country, but on a somewhat busy road. My neighbor’s dog was run over a couple of weeks ago, not 50 feet from our house, and she wasn’t the first. I refuse to let my kitties run free outside because the chances of them getting run over are very high, not to mention the dogs, possums, and raccoons that could harm them. Is it cruel that I keep them inside?

  142. Patricia says:

Some people like to get bent over everything. It’s how they spend the bulk of their time. I say let ‘em. Ignoring people who like to see the negative in damn near everything is pretty easy. Of course it pises them off when you ignore them, just as much as when you reply. So no need to particpate in a can’t win situation.

A critter site friend emailed this to me and I am at the city public library and I laughed so hard, everyone thought something was wrong with me.

This is the cutest, funniest by far, video I have ever seen! And the one got on it again. Poor little critters.

And me with no tissues in my purse!

  144. Cynthia says:

Why oh why is the video no longer available? I was told about it and now I want to watch it, it has gone!

[It looks like the YouTube video owner disabled embedding, sometime after we posted it here. So basically they pulled the rug out from under us... but if it's their video, that's their prerogative. I'll put the direct link into the post so you can at least go to YouTube and see it. - Ed.]

  145. Every time I watch this I end up on the floor. These two remind me of my own two BOYZ – Duffy and Sean. Sadly they are now with the angels, but they were the original *Treadmill Hellsters* – circa 1995.

Thanks, Meggie – for this and ALL you do!
