3 Margaret 03.18.08 at 1:33 pm

That dog is a freaking genius! I should have him do my taxes.

4 Yancey 03.18.08 at 1:36 pm

If this is a purchasable product, I need to know where! Pure Genius!

5 Otterpuss 03.18.08 at 1:40 pm

Do they make one that shoots plush squeaky toys?

6 sc 03.18.08 at 1:41 pm

omg – this is awesome!!!! And what a smart dog, he’s adorable!

7 Wendy 03.18.08 at 1:42 pm

Too, too FUNNY!

Where can I get me one of those machines?

8 Katrina 03.18.08 at 1:44 pm

OK- this one gets sent to LOTS of people! Thank you!

9 TW 03.18.08 at 1:45 pm

That is hilarious. But can you imagine it still going at 3 AM? I could see my cats dragging it into the bedroom at breakfast time.

10 Theresa 03.18.08 at 1:45 pm

Either he’s a frickin’ genius, or that’s a pretty bad case of OCD. ;) INSANELY REDONK!!

11 Holy Cuteness 03.18.08 at 1:48 pm

This is such a cool video!

12 jen 03.18.08 at 1:53 pm

omg that is soooo adorable!!!!!!

13 lindr 03.18.08 at 1:54 pm

No wonder puppers is so slim and trim! If only I could find something that I like to do this much, maybe I could be svelte, too. Love the close ups of the grizzled old face. Such a cutie!

14 just me 03.18.08 at 1:57 pm

puppy love?

*runs away from own horrendous pun*

15 Theo 03.18.08 at 2:00 pm

[blinking]

…did I just see that??

16 gndtn 03.18.08 at 2:08 pm

Fantastic!!!!

17 chet's momma 03.18.08 at 2:11 pm

i love the jane-austen-like soundtrack!

18 Jean 03.18.08 at 2:11 pm

I want one! Beats the heck out of the chuckit.

19 Theresa 03.18.08 at 2:12 pm

PS extra points for Mozart in the background!!!

20 CB 03.18.08 at 2:12 pm

Oh, no! If my fiance’ sees this he’ll start building one for the dong we don’t even HAVE yet! ;-p

21 Jaye 03.18.08 at 2:14 pm

::::snickering childishly at CB’s typo::::

I love how his tail keeps wagging nonstop. He’s *so* happy with this game.

Theo, I can has weenerdog plz?

22 Anne Boleyn 03.18.08 at 2:14 pm

Where was this thing when I had labs! Although I wonder if the slobber factor would be a problem, like rusting out the mechanism.

23 Kaitou Juliet 03.18.08 at 2:16 pm

CB, I DO hope that’s a typo for “dog.” :)

And I think this gadget looks like insane amounts of fun for all concerned!

24 Uilleand 03.18.08 at 2:22 pm

That is one seriously happy OCD puppeh!
(I love his old white face…scrunchles ears between ball tosses)

25 katybug 03.18.08 at 2:40 pm

look at little asian kid, doggie isnt the only one having fun!

26 violetgreen 03.18.08 at 2:43 pm

OK I see what this is. (lol) It’s one dog’s answer to a recent news bummer:
“A study by Saint Louis University found that a lovable pooch named Sparky and a robotic dog, AIBO, were about equally effective at relieving the loneliness of nursing home residents and fostering attachments.”
When the dachsy heard that, he said, “OK, two can play at that game.”

27 compy-saur 03.18.08 at 2:47 pm

Wonderful! :-D I love how the pupperton reloads the machine!

28 kitkat 03.18.08 at 2:49 pm

That is possibly the most awesome thing I have ever seen.

29 Mirysien 03.18.08 at 2:51 pm

wonderful! what fun

30 lee 03.18.08 at 2:52 pm

I love it! I want one! Look at what great shape that dog’s in! Does he play when you’re not around? Seriously, get thee to the patent offishe! This is brilliant! Show investors this page with all the comments.

31 Subhangi 03.18.08 at 3:01 pm

Grrr … I can’t watch the whole video – it always stops somewhere in the beginning! Barooooooooo!

32 j 03.18.08 at 3:02 pm

its a good thing the machine isn’t any taller…:D
*stubby legs running*

33 spykes_mom 03.18.08 at 3:07 pm

O.M.G.

That is frickin’ AWWWWESSSOMMMME!

34 Fegli 03.18.08 at 3:08 pm

What a smart pup! And what a cute little kid! Brilliant invention, I must say!

35 Karen 03.18.08 at 3:09 pm

SO CUTE! And what a good way to give the puppy some exercise while you’re at work…

36 blair 03.18.08 at 3:16 pm
37 Deborah 03.18.08 at 3:18 pm

Arlo R.? I think I worked with an Arlo R. on some Tech Museum stuff long ago…
Paly Vikings?! I went to Paly.. hard to believe it is just a coincidence.
Small Cuteoverload world…

38 Elise 03.18.08 at 3:20 pm

Aww…dachshunds love playing fetch so much, mine will go after the ball for daaaayyys! I need one of these! I would show all you CO people how cute she is, but the person that runs this site never posts a single thing I send her.

39 Meow House 03.18.08 at 3:31 pm

That’s one puppeh who will never need to be put on diet food!

40 doxiemommy 03.18.08 at 3:32 pm

There was a brief shot of the top of the machine…it said ball counter 10000. I wonder how long it took for this guy to rack up 10K in fetches:)

And it showed a doggie on the face of the controls – it must be an actual gizmo someone has manufactured for doggie playtime.

41 Beth 03.18.08 at 3:33 pm

I would have paid SERIOUS money for this item had I known about it when I had a cocker spaniel! Can’t believe a doxie would do this…mine wouldn’t EVER let go of a ball voluntarily, let alone fetch it at all! Soooocute, expecially the hiney wag shots!!!

Doxies are automatically cute in my book. I think it should be a rule of cuteness.

42 Lilly 03.18.08 at 3:35 pm

That may be the funniest thing I have ever seen in my entire life.

43 bsnist 03.18.08 at 3:41 pm

I LOVE it! That little pup is so happy! Gave me a tear in my eye thinking of my Fritzie (miniature poodle), who would retrieve for hours till he dropped if you kept throwing for him – he would have thought he was in dog heaven with a gadget like that! When we had little kids over in the summer, we had to take the ball away because they would just keep throwing it till he got heat exhaustion if we weren’t careful. Sigh. RIP Snicklefritz.

44 Kiragirl 03.18.08 at 3:49 pm

love it! I’d like to see what that far wall looks like–full of circular yellow spots.

45 Morigale 03.18.08 at 3:52 pm

This just cements my theory that my dog would love a toy-throwing machine as much as, or more than, she loves me.

What a cute doggy he is, though. *heart*

46 Annie 03.18.08 at 3:53 pm

LOL Magnificent… I love how the dog perfectly places the ball for optimal launch.
HEhehehe
and the perfect toy to keep kids and dogs entertained
HEhehehehe.

47 Kiragirl 03.18.08 at 3:54 pm

that is HILARIOUS! I had to watch it again. I didn’t even notice the little fuzzy terrier-in-training til the 2nd time.

48 RJ 03.18.08 at 3:55 pm

okay .. one word of warning … on the rarely heard of word of “Too Much Exerscizes” . .. uhm .. that puppeh was actually born as a ST. Bernard, with a pituitary issue … but, thanks to some help from puppeh richard simmons, and that incredible device, puppeh’s shrunk down to a lean dachzund size J/K .. great post .. must have one of those, oh, and a puppeh, I don’t think My cattz, would enjoy that device

49 Annie 03.18.08 at 4:04 pm

RJ my cats would love it. Chasing balls being a favorite past time.

50 warrior rabbit 03.18.08 at 4:06 pm

Awesome! What a smart goggie. I looked at the comments on the YouTube page and the guy said it started out as a simple project, and then he got into it and it took him 2 years. There are infrared sensors, too, to keep the dog from snagging himself in any machine parts, etc. And it only supplements the manual ball throwing, and the dog is supervised with the machine. There. Pre-emptive nuff snuffing.

51 minx54 03.18.08 at 4:08 pm

Good idea. One of my cats watched this video. I could read her mind. thats a dog for you my energy is used to eat and find a comfy place to sleep.

52 M. 03.18.08 at 4:13 pm

I love the close up of his happy face! Sigh.

53 MamaRobot 03.18.08 at 4:26 pm

Redonk. That’s all.

54 Lone 03.18.08 at 4:29 pm

And that tail is a deadly weapon all, watch your ankles and shins! Bap, bap.
Curious about the electric bill…;)

55 Kiragirl 03.18.08 at 4:34 pm

maybe it’s solar-powered, wouldn’t that be cool?

56 trin 03.18.08 at 4:36 pm

one of my cats now wants one…

the other is like “WTF, do NOT want… it’ll just make the little brother MORE hyper.”

57 lily 03.18.08 at 4:40 pm

oh thats great! He can play fetch for as long as he likes without bugging his owner. i love how the doy patiently waits.

58 klah 03.18.08 at 4:55 pm

Where can I get one of those? That is seriously genius. My dog would never stop!

59 Theo 03.18.08 at 5:00 pm

Klah — that’s somebody’s custom hobby-built tennis ball flinger. You might be able to find something *like* it, if you hunted hard enough; most likely, though, you’d need to dream up & build your own version.

60 A thinker 03.18.08 at 5:03 pm

L to the O to the L to the max!!!

What a brilliant invention! Every fetch-obsessed doggy should have one! And what great exercise for Mr. McStumpersons! He seemeth so happy!

61 megusmaximus 03.18.08 at 5:27 pm

@ Annie – I totally agree about the cuteness of the doxie’s precision placement of the ball. You can see his little brain working as he nudges it with his nose, “Okay, just a liiiitle bit to the left – perfect!”

62 Gwenny 03.18.08 at 5:36 pm

That’s awesome! We want one!

63 Lisa 03.18.08 at 5:36 pm

I laughed my a** off through this whole video! This little guy could be my dachsie’s twin, right down to the OCD ball-retrieval. Seriously, I gotta get me one of those!

64 cheesybird 03.18.08 at 5:47 pm

I love that you can hear the pitter patter of his little paws as he runs back and forth for the ball!

But what’s with the subliminal Terrier/Mogwai action around 1:57?

65 Peg of Tilling 03.18.08 at 6:06 pm

I didn’t know Wile E. Coyote had a dog. Soo-per genius!

66 Arlo Rose 03.18.08 at 6:15 pm

@Deborah Yup, that’s me. :-)

67 viking '87 03.18.08 at 6:17 pm

Green and White forever,
Go Paly High!
We are the Vikings
Of Paly High ….
P-A-L-O A-L-T-O
PA-LY HIGH!!!

Sorry, just had to get that off my chest. Go Arlo! Go doxy! as the little kid in the vid said, Squeeeeeeee!

68 Jmper 03.18.08 at 6:26 pm

Seriously I want one of these. Rylee my Minnie Aussie will play ball for *hours*…Love her to death but after the first hour or so my arm hurts.

Who ever made this needs to contact me…I got a brother in the biz (hes a patent(sp??) and copyright lawyer. I would pay big bucks for that thing…and my dog would probably not use it then :P

69 Deb 03.18.08 at 6:27 pm

The closes thing I can find is this one, which could serve the same self entertaining purpose.

http://www.godog.com.au/

70 Theo 03.18.08 at 6:41 pm

Good find, Deb.

71 tank 03.18.08 at 7:32 pm

really cute…except for the part where it looks like the baby’s little toes almost get smashed in the thing when it’s coming down for reloading…not exactly baby proof, you know?

72 Catsquatch 03.18.08 at 7:38 pm

Im shocked!
I simply cant believe CO would post a video of a dog playing with himself…..

;D

73 Mary (the first) 03.18.08 at 7:41 pm

This is great! I want a doxie!! Did anyone else notice the wallpaper in background appears to have pandas on it.. I think maybe that thing is aimed to launch into the boy’s bedroom?

74 Mary (the first) 03.18.08 at 7:42 pm

tank.. someone up there mentioned the whole thing was sensored to not pinch any wayward puppeh or baby parts that might come near the mechanism.. all is good!

75 RevWaldo 03.18.08 at 7:54 pm

Almost perfect – throwbot still needs a random “fake out” mode -
Brrrrrrzz..
Zawwwk…
(ball drops into secret compartment)
TWANG!
scamper scamper scamper WTF?
HAW-HAW-HAW. HAW-HAW-HAW.

76 J. Bo 03.18.08 at 8:05 pm

I could watch this all damn day…

77 Annie 03.18.08 at 8:09 pm

LOL at warrior Rabbit.. We are now snuffing Nuffs. Hahahahaha hehehehehe. Snicker.. made me spew my Coffee.

78 Silent Meow 03.18.08 at 8:10 pm

That dog is pure genius! I need him to teach me college calculus. :o )

79 brinnann 03.18.08 at 8:11 pm

RevWaldo, that was an amazing visual. Totally earned an LOL from me. Thx! :D

80 Michelle 03.18.08 at 8:30 pm

RevWaldo: lmao!

81 Lil 03.18.08 at 8:36 pm

there’s always one nuff nuff, so that must be me…
is it snowing outside??? no?
then git on outside and play, doggie!
no need to play upstairs on the beige carpet!!
and the ball will go further!

I seriously want one for my labradoodle but I doubt she would get her butt off the couch to fetch it…moi?

82 CoffeeCup 03.18.08 at 9:27 pm

Lil, the video was uploaded in January and the display on the machine said November, so I’m pretty sure it would’ve been incredibly cold if not snowing, depending on where the user lives. Plus, it’s probably something to entertain the dog when you’re away for an hour or two.

83 Pitkat 03.18.08 at 9:35 pm

That was awesome!!! I wish I has something similar for my cats’ mice…

84 lurkingsmirk 03.18.08 at 10:14 pm

What a great way to keep doggie entertained and healthy! He can get as much play as he wants and it never gets old.

85 Annie J 03.18.08 at 10:18 pm

So cute! Ohmigosh. I want that doggeh. And that ball-shooter. Genius! That is definitely one happy doggeh! :P

86 Gail 03.18.08 at 10:48 pm

At about :50, this little doxie fetch machine spends a little time just chomping the ball and it reminded me of the Cocker we used to have….she would get tired of chasing the ball and “forget” to bring it back.

87 Remzy 03.18.08 at 10:54 pm

man, someone is getting RICH with this invention! hope its patented!

88 AuntieMame 03.18.08 at 11:08 pm

RevWaldo, I think that’s what the kid was for. Didn’t he palm the ball at least once and the dog went off after nothing? Hee!

89 MilkyWei 03.19.08 at 12:09 am

The first couple of times, puppy is standing so close to the machine it actually lifts his right ear up *adorable*!!!

90 Raemie L. 03.19.08 at 12:36 am

Ahahahaha, I lurrve this. The classical piano being played in the background and the toddler in the latter part just upped the awesomeness of this vid.

Nobody’s mentioned “Wallace and Gromit” yet?!

91 sockmonster sarai 03.19.08 at 12:39 am

OMG! That is totally PAWSOME! I need to get a dog so I can get one!

92 Susan B. 03.19.08 at 12:46 am

AHAHAHAHA. I don’t think I’ve laughed so hard in a long time. I love his expressions & how he runs so excitedly. So cute! If I knew how to make one I totally would.

93 Megan 03.19.08 at 1:03 am

Could it get any friggin’ cuter than this??? I DON’T THINK SO!!!

94 Clare 03.19.08 at 1:10 am

This is FAB. I love how the machine will stop and come back down and wait for pup if pup doesn’t have it balanced in JUST the right spot. :D

95 Laurie 03.19.08 at 1:18 am

SQUEEEEEEE!!!! Do they make the ones that shoot toy mice for kittehs?!!!

96 nakey 03.19.08 at 1:43 am

O, adorable! What a smart doggie.
So this is what my noisy neighbors are up to.

97 Alex 03.19.08 at 1:52 am

Must have! :Goes off toolkit and random parts:

98 NutherDeb 03.19.08 at 1:57 am

“all the live long day…”

99 spb 03.19.08 at 2:17 am

No, no! Stop it people! Way too many positive comments! Where are the nuffs? ~~~Olly, olly, oxen free!~~~ We must have balance to our comment threads! BALANCE I TELL YOU! Or the scales will tip over and the interwebs will come crashing down! Oh, the humanity! (And a few assorted anipal types.)

Don’t look at me like that… somebody had to say it. ;)

100 spb 03.19.08 at 2:18 am

By the way… luved it!

101 Michael 03.19.08 at 4:05 am

All these positive comments have almost talked me out of it, but when I first saw this I was going to nominate it for “Cute or Sad” — the idea that someone got a machine to play with their dog for them. Isn’t that something we should do ourselves? How do we get all those lower-blood-pressure benefits out of owning a pet if we outsource the play to a gizmo? And what of the dog? Isn’t this like buying your kid an expensive toy instead of spending time with him?

That said, it IS very ingenious, and I’m astonished that the dog learned how to work it. For that matter, I’m always astonished when a dog retrieves ANYthing. Games of fetch with my dogs always lasted one throw — when they picked up whatever toy I’d thrown, they wanted ME to chase THEM to get it back.

102 Zee 03.19.08 at 4:05 am

Oh gawd. He must be practising for Wimbledon!

103 tablemountaingirl 03.19.08 at 4:24 am

OMG. Its like the arm that never gets tired of the ball “game.” Tell me you have a place to buy one of these. Its great!!!

104 lurkingsmirk 03.19.08 at 4:26 am

Michael–I think someone wrote earlier that the owner actually built this for his dog. To me that’s like building a tree house for your kids, you’re not in the tree house yourself but the fact that you put the effort into making it makes a huge difference. And it’s a nice thing to do for your pet.

105 berthaslave 03.19.08 at 6:30 am

I am agog. This is awesome. No words…no words…

106 Tigress 03.19.08 at 7:25 am

My first thought was ‘wow, a dog that can play fetch on his own.’ Then I thought, ‘What happens when our pets don’t need us anymore?’

This is another example of humans getting phased out of the pet equation. I’ve seen automatic food-dispensers, water ‘fountains’ that keep the water fresh all the time. Now this.

Beware, the animals are taking over the world!

107 Marcia 03.19.08 at 7:32 am

Now all that dog needs is a treadmill, an
automatic food/water dispenser, a self-cleaning litter box, and a remote to the t.v.

108 Witchylana 03.19.08 at 8:05 am

@ MIchael – It’s a way for peep who already have low blood pressure to play with their puppeh, without the risk of fainting….. :)

109 Barbarella 03.19.08 at 8:29 am

Awwwwwwwwwwww! That is too cute! And that tail wagging the whole time, bless! :D

110 Cat 03.19.08 at 12:14 pm

Dude, you do not know any engineers, do you? Have you any idea teh challenge and joy such a one would get out of making that thing? It’s a neat bit of machine- well thought out and excellent use of sensors and programming. If my husband made that, I would be so proud!

Not to mention the fact the dog gets play when the humans have to take care of the baby human, or if the human gets hurt and cannot play fetch (I heard of one person who had a modified skeet thrower for that when she had back issues)

111 Theo 03.19.08 at 12:26 pm

Cat — pretty sure Arlo R. *is* the engineer here.

112 Lacey 03.19.08 at 1:43 pm

It’s a modern example of classical conditioning! haha so cute.

113 Traci 03.19.08 at 3:17 pm

This must be the worlds cheapest babysitter!

114 view302 03.19.08 at 3:19 pm

It was cute until that screaming child got into the video.

115 Tigress 03.19.08 at 5:50 pm

Screaming child? All I heard was laughter. That kid was amazingly well behaved. He wasn’t chasing or attacking the dog. He didn’t try to break the machine. Heck, I’m impressed that a toddler knew how the machine worked!

116 Catsquatch 03.19.08 at 7:06 pm

“No, no! Stop it people! Way too many positive comments! Where are the nuffs? ~~~Olly, olly, oxen free!~~~ We must have balance to our comment threads! BALANCE I TELL YOU!”

I tried.

Gave it my best shot.

Really….

;D

117 Quinn 03.19.08 at 8:29 pm

Dewds, that dog is the shizzle manizzle! I love how a few times he didn’t really want to part with the ball but also wanted it to be shot again. What cutie!

118 A 03.19.08 at 11:06 pm

DACHSHUNDS RULE.

119 Subhangi 03.20.08 at 4:56 am

EEEEEEEEEEE!!! SO CUTE!!!

I want a Daschie now!!!

120 Bad Kitten on a Rampage 03.20.08 at 4:04 pm

“Green and White forever,
Go Paly High!
We are the Vikings
Of Paly High ….
P-A-L-O A-L-T-O
PA-LY HIGH!!!”

DITTO – From this loud and proud alumna (Class of 82)!!!

Good on ya, Arlo – I LURVE it!

121 rubber duck 03.20.08 at 10:57 pm

The machine was actually vaguely scary…or at least the noise was! He’s obviously quite used to it though. What a cute and happy doggie!

I LOL’d at the pictures on the machine…it was even the right kind of dog in the drawing :D

122 hazysnake 03.21.08 at 2:54 am

I hope this gives the MIT professor who runs the annual mechanical engineering design contest ideas for designing the best mechanical toys for puppehs and kittehs.

123 Theo 03.21.08 at 2:44 pm

HazySnake — you’re on the right track, but on the wrong coast, I think.
;)

124 alliecatt 03.25.08 at 9:52 pm

i was just discussing a doggie powered cannon for the one who lives for fetching. Glad to see great minds thinking alike!

125 Melissa 03.30.08 at 3:17 am

Just as a clarification:

For those people worried about the owner’s involvement, they should read the caption that accompanies the video on YouTube.

“I built the ball machine because I thought my dog Jerry, might like it and that it would be something fun for me to build. So after two years of on and off work, with many safety features such as IR proximity sensors to protect Jerry and my son from the machine, I finally complete.

Far from being a replacement for me, I was always right there with him enjoying his fun. And with all the troubles that I went through to build the ball machine, I still end up throwing more balls than that the machine could count! According to the computer, he played with the machine by himself only 3 times in his life.

I recently put this video on YouTube to keep alive my earlier memories of him and (hopefully) provide some “humorous distractions” for anyone that might drop by.”

126 tammytalking 03.30.08 at 8:37 pm

I saw a guy on Letterman with an invention like this only it shot a beer through the air instead of a ball!
