Take a right at the gun rack

OK, if you were to file this under COMPLETELY REDONK, and that would be a start.

Um Clo G., first there was Jessica the massaged house-hippo, then Patches the hamburger-ordering house-horse, NOW THIS MOOSE AND ODDLY INTRIGUING SOUNDTRACK. You must be stopped, pure and simple.

Catchy music – what language is it in? I love spoiled animals…like this moose :)

  2. Theo says:

Did that MOOSE just STRAIGHTEN that painting on the wall?

    Am I awake?

  3. Tisha_ says:

My favorite part is when the moose tries to eat the photo above the bed. hehehe

  4. leah b. says:

Ok I have seen an rhino, baby camel, buffalo, and a now a moose whats next a elephant ???

I am not sure about that moosac though….

  5. TrinketsMom says:

Catchy little ditty; sounds like Finnish–it’s like listening to my grandparents :-)

  6. taylorreigne says:

    What the BLEEP???

[Heh, I think you misspelled that... - Ed.]

  7. Katrina says:

It sounds like Finnish to me, too. It doesn’t sound like my Norwegian kin.

  8. Katrina says:

..and they don’t straighten pictures before they go to bed.

  9. Alice says:

Um…WHY DO I NOT HAVE A MOOSE IN MY HOUSE RIGHT NOW????? :(

  10. Pixy Misa says:

TrinketsMom & Katrina – well spotted! It is indeed Finnish. It’s the Ievan Polka as recorded by Loituma.

    Moosefeets!!!

  12. cheesybird says:

    *rubs eyes*

    Blink blink…

    Did I just see that?

  13. 260Oakley says:

Um, is anyone else creeped out by the fact that these people have both a live moose and antlers on the wall in their house? More importantly, is the moose creeped out by this?

  14. Redzilla says:

I–words…failing…brain…not work. Moose in the house, which rhymes in Canada.

  15. Pixy Misa says:

260Oakley – mooses shed their antlers each year, so nothing to worry about.

  16. katiedid says:

aww I like how they wipe his feets before he comes in for movie night … heheh… oh and I do believe that moose antlers fall off after mating season.. so the ones hanging up could have been found in the woods.

  17. Theo says:

There there, RedZ. Have some Tokyo.

  18. Hon Glad says:

This skandinavian porn plumbs new depths, I mean a threesome with a Moose!

  19. Theo says:

Hon Glad, I think you’re seeing things in this vid that I’m not.
    [replaying endlessly]

  20. Laura Miller says:

Loituma is a great Finnish folk band. I’ve got a couple of their albums. Most of the songs are less bouncy and more atmospheric than this polka, though.

  21. cheesybird says:

Does CO offer psychological assistance in getting Finnish earworm out of ones head?

  22. Theo says:

    *EEEVILEST HAND-RUBBINGS*

Ohh ho ho. What do you say, Peeps? Who wants to help CheesyBird excise this morning’s Polka Earworm?

…or shall *I* take a shot at it??

    >;-)

  23. cheesybird says:

    Lalalalalalaaaa… I’m not listening… lalalalalala!!!

  24. Theo says:

    [riffling through the C.O. Fakebook]

  25. Silent Meow says:

ARG! HALP! I can’t get that polka song outta my head now!

And, by the way, luuuuuuuuv the moose!

  26. Courtney says:

    Awww, that was sweet.

I liked watching the baby moose splash in the puddle. Splash! Splash!

I hope they take care of this moose for the rest of its life. If it went back into the woods someone would shoot it. :(

  27. Lizzy says:

Now I’m going to be humming that ALL DAI!!

If dey haz a moose, I can has giraffey, yes? 8grabs and runs*

  28. chanpon says:

Gotta’ love out their very cool Scandanavian furniture, especially the whole media cabinet/book shelves – puts Ikea to shame.

Umm…don’t know what to think about the moose lying down to watch tv and crawling into bed with them..

  29. Paula says:

Is a moose in the living room anything like an elephant in the living room?

  30. Fegli says:

A pet moose may be adorable, but a hunter with a pet moose is ironic in an almost sick kind of way. I can’t help but concoct some maudlin story wherein the hunter shot its mom but didn’t know it had a baby so he took it home to raise himself… Prolly not the story, but I can’t help myself.

  31. Theresa says:

Remember what *these* peeps say: Kiss a lovely moose!
    http://mfrost.typepad.com/cute_overload/2007/01/back_on_the_moo.html

  32. Hiluvilu says:

Haha this is awesome! Definitely odd and slightly disturbing to have a moose lie in your bed, but on the other hand I’d give anything to have a moose pal!

Don’t go thinking this is the standard thing in Finland :-P

  33. Megan says:

A moose once bit my sister.

[Ohhhh no. Not *THIS* gag again... - Ed.]

    ;)

  34. Tagabolt says:

Um…. was he scratching that moose with his gun? Eeeep!

  35. Lisa says:

Um. Uhh. Or as my former MIL would say “Waaaay-ul! I never!”

I have to ask…am I the only one worried about what happens when moosie needs to take a pee? Or worse?

  36. Bebe says:

260Oakley – Most hunters are actually animal lovers as well (see the National Geo magazine article about hunters and conservation), so it’s probably a common theme for them :)

  37. Katrina says:

    Ah, the Majestyk moose….

Just sing some vapid American song like ‘It’s a Small World After All’ that’ll knock it right out of your head, but why would you want to do that? I love that little song- maybe it genetic. Its all the same gene pool.

Uff-da! I want a moose, but ya know, they do get BIG. I love the splashing baby pictures!

  38. Desi says:

Should be an old, old British pop song called “Hoots Mon”. With the lyrics being “there’s a mouse loose about this house” but because it’s sung in a very broad Scots accent it sounds like “there’s a moose loose aboot this hoose”. :-)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-R1F5RYOco

  39. Jen says:

“Is that a moose in bed with us, or are you just happy to see me”?

I did get a little worried when they were leading him out into the woods wearing blaze orange and a-totin’ guns.

  40. Pearl Ostroff says:

Also liked that little polka. I’m undecided about some other Finnish folk music I’ve heard.

Moose do get very BIG. Here, in Canada, people in cars do hit moose, especially males in mating season, this does not do much for the moose, but it also totals the car and possibly the driver.

And, by the way, in my part of Canada (Quebec), moose and house do not rhyme, even when you are an English speaker.

  41. Renae says:

Bebe, exactly! My dad is both an avid hunter/fisherman and a very active conservationist. Of course, my parents don’t have various animal parts hanging up for display in their home, but still.

  42. A thinker says:

Um, Teho, no, I think the moose CROOKEDED it.

Otherwise, I’m similarly wondering if I’m awake. That is purely redonkulous.

  43. Megan says:

Oddly enough, I’ve heard this song before. No idea where.

  44. A thinker says:

and moose and house don’t rhyme in Ontario, either…

  45. Redzilla says:

Pearl Ostroff sex: by the way, in my part of Canada (Quebec), moose and house do not rhyme, even when you are an English speaker.

I should hope that for the French speakers moose doesn’t come even close to rhyming with maison ;o)

  46. Theo says:

    RedZ — Freud & I adore you.

  47. e-beth says:

I’m very impressed with this Finnish bed that can SUPPORT THE WEIGHT OF AN ADULT MOOSE! It looks like a Tempurpedic-maybe they could do an advert.

  48. Johanna says:

    Ummm…. Where’s Rocky Raccoon??!!

[Oh, and BTW, I too think the puddle splashing is the best part.]

  49. ceejoe says:

okaaaaaay… I wanna know what the first thing was that made them think, “gee, let’s take this moose in the house…”
    I luv it tho!

  50. Pheas says:

    Ring ring ring ring
    Ring ring ring ring
    BANANAPHONE!

  51. Karebear says:

I’m wondering if he’s freaked out by the antlers on the wall too. I thought people only mounted antlers as a trophy for an animal they killed, not just antlers they found laying around on the ground!

But once again, something we can learn from the frolicking of animals. Always take time to stomp in puddles!

  52. Kelly says:

    LOL @Theo!

  53. Sandra says:

Ummm, did anyone else think this moose acted like a dog? I mean, when he laid down in front of the TV I could have SWORN it was my black lab! Although Fred is not quite so good about wiping his feet.

  54. Sweetpea says:

Loooved the music, it’s czech, no?

That’s a big animal’s worth of smell for one little house.

  55. Sweetpea says:

Finnish! That’s what I get for not reading above posts

  56. Noelle says:

Pixy Misa…Thanks for the link. I really like the song but the video was….ummm….interesting? It’s like the SNL “two wild and crazy guys” scetch but with three guys instead.

Love the moose, wouldn’t want it in the house!

  57. jules says:

Megan – mind you, those moose bites can be pretty nasty. :)

I want that song on my iPod! I’m totally going to iTunes and looking up Loituma.

  58. Noelle says:

Oops, that’s supposed to be “sketch”. That’s what I get for now spell checking before posting.

  59. Noelle says:

Not my day! That was supposed to be “not” instead of “now”. I’m gonna stop typing now.

  60. homer mariner says:

Wow. I grew up in Alaska with moose. They are not typically nice animals in the wild, and are responsible for more injuries and deaths in Alaska than any other animal. So PLEEEEEASE do not get near a moose if you see one. Particularly a baby moose. These people appear to have hand raised an orphan. We’ve had so many moose destroy our property, that this is an amusing twist! Invite it in! That’s all it really wanted! You can’t help but love the playfulness of baby moose though!

  61. starling says:

“Should be an old, old British pop song called “Hoots Mon”"

Thank you thank you thank you! I’ve been looking for that clip for aaaaaaaages!

(that’s one heck of a well-trained moose, by the way)

  62. Tuittu says:

Its finnish band called “Loituma” ;) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loituma

    Nuapurista kuului se polokan tahti
    Jalakani pohjii kutkutti
    Ievan äiti se tyttöönsä vahti
    Vaan kyllähän Ieva se jutkutti

Sillä ei meitä sillon kiellot haittaa
    Kun myö tanssimme laiasta laitaan
    Salivilihippu tupputapputa
    Äppytipput hilijalleen…

  63. Dog Toilet says:

What is the moose doing in bed? This is hilarious.

  64. fourkits says:

I have a whole section of my ipod with what I call “CO Songs”. Wonderful for listening to while cleaning the house. I still have baby goats romping in my head when I hear Minuet in G…

  65. jen says:

    RE
    DONK
    ULOUS!!!!!

    love it

  66. Poohbear says:

    Of course! Ruhmember! http://mfrost.typepad.com/cute_overload/2007/01/back_on_the_moo.html
“Moose cows love us more than their own children.”
“They run to us whenever we call.”
“and some – big bulls, kind like kitten. ” “Swedish army had moose troops… Moose turned out to be wiser then their knights, they left battlefield to hide in the nearest forest if danger occured.” To the tune of Loituma (the Finns giving the Swedes a licking…) This is a great sequel to that UNforgettable post! (The music’s great too, reminds me of the kitty-on-horse song that was Swedish, I think.)

  67. its a tiny moose but a giant animal; philosophers may long ponder this intellectual dilemma!

  68. Karoliina says:

As a Finn living in America, it was just nice to see a Finnish moose. The folk music is in dialect, so it was a fun exercise to figure out the words. It’s like listening to someone from Minnesota if you speak non-regional American English!

  69. Michelle says:

That has to be the most hilarifabulredonkulous video I’ve ever seen. I laughed the entire length.

  70. Megan says:

Sorry, I just couldn’t resist! The setup was too good. :D

  71. Lindsay says:

Here is the odd but addicting video of the charming Asian cartoon rendition that made that catchy song so famous:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNDh_tFIHn4&feature=related

And here are the lyrics in english in case you all were wondering:
The sound of a polka drifted from my neighbor’s
and set my feet a-tapping oh!
Ieva’s mother had her eye on her daughter but
Ieva she managed to fool her, you know.
‘Cause who’s going to listen to mother saying no
when we’re all busy dancing to and fro!

Ieva was smiling, the fiddle it was wailing
as people crowded round to wish her luck.
Everyone was hot but it didn’t seem to bother
the handsome young man, the dashing buck.
‘Cause who’s going to mind a drop of sweat
when he’s all busy dancing to and fro!

Ieva’s mother she shut herself away
in her own quiet room to hum a hymn.
Leaving our hero to have a spot of fun
in a neighbor’s house when the lights are dim.
‘Cause what does it matter what the old folks say
when you’re all busy dancing to and fro!

When the music stopped then the real fun began
and that’s when the laddie fooled around.
When he took her home, when the dancing was over
her mother angrily waiting they found.
But I said to her, Ieva, now don’t you weep
and we’ll soon be dancing to and fro!

I said to her mother now stop that noise
or I won’t be responsible for what I do.
If you go quietly and stay in your room
you won’t get hurt while your daughter I woo.
‘Cause this fine laddie is a wild sort of guy
when he’s all busy dancing to and fro!

One thing I tell you is you won’t trap me,
no, you won’t find me an easy catch.
Travel to the east and travel to the west but
Ieva and I are going to make a match.
‘Cause this fine laddie ain’t the bashful sort
when he’s all busy dancing to and fro.
    ————
Problaby more information than you would like but there it is.
I prefer the moose spashing in the puddle over the strange onion tossing girl… :)

  72. Vicki says:

Lindsay, I was wondering when someone was finally gonna mention Orihime Leek-spin (my Halloween costume last year).

Ievan’s Polka is one of my group of friends’ fav songs ever. My boyfriend even made a techno remix but I unfortunately can’t find a link to it.

Two of my fav things mixed together: a famous *chan meme and C.O.

And if any of you know what I’m talking about, I didn’t break 1 or 2.

  73. berthaslave says:

No one’s gonna get this joke, but I think that’s just the Berkowitzes in a costume.

    (crickets chirping)

But seriously, folks, I’ve heard of ordering moose for desert, but this is another thing entirely….and can you imagine what it’s like in the morning for these people? “You have far too much moose in your hair, mom.” Of course, this was the late 80s (according to the vid), so maybe there wasn’t ENOUGHT moose.

Of course, a perfect video for a lovely Moosday.

    P.S. Love the moosic.

  74. Niki says:

That made my day, especially the little moose splashity-splashing in the puddle. Maybe he could go for a swim with the pig a few entries back!

  75. bunnyhunny says:

I get it, Berthaslave! I love Woody Allen’s old stand-up comedy.

  76. Allegra says:

that was THE weirdest experience i’ve had in a LONG LONG time… wtf, that song…

  77. taj says:

Oh no! The Leek Girl song!!! I’ll have that stuck in my head for weeks now!

    http://dojo.fi/~rancid/loituma__.swf

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gsmx4DcvZ5c

  78. taj says:

    oops, someone already posted ;)

  79. tia says:

he’s all “splash” ohh cold! “splash” ohh cold! “splash” hehe it tickles!

and then he tries to get a piggyback ride from his owner. niiiiice.

  80. Barbara says:

    oh my.
Every moment of that video just got more and more redonk.

    I want to sleep over.

  81. k80 says:

    3 words: IN MY FREEZER.

  82. NutherDeb says:

Linsay, thanks for the translation!! I was wondering if the song had anything to do with moose…I guess not! Maybe they just had it stuck in their heads!!

  83. cheryl says:

    i wanna go mooseback riding!!!!

  84. ka9q's wife says:

splish splash I was taking a bath
    long about saturday night
rub-a-dub just a scrubbing in the tub
    thinking everything was alright.

does that help the ear worm?

  85. cnthomp says:

Invader Zim fans are now terrified for no apparent reason…

    A room…with a MOOSE!!!

  86. AK Julie says:

THANK YOU, Meg, for opening my email (or someone else’s) and finally posting this video! This is truly where the clip belongs. : )

  87. o_o says:

    moose on bed/tv= UBER REDONK

  88. Megan says:

cute moose ya’ll, but future moose-o-philes beware that a wild moose can stomp you to smithereens. don’t mess with em!

  89. neptune says:

    yay Loituma!

    Cute moosey too.

  90. Annie says:

If you give a moose a cookie

  91. Em says:

    Actually, its:
If you give a moose a muffin

  92. Subhangi says:

    LMAO @ Theo and RedZ.

BTW, I think Moose would rhyme with house in Liverpool.

  93. Em says:

    Just so’s ya know

  94. Laureth says:

Kiitos! I really want one now :)

  95. Juno says:

The moose did very well. He scored. (Fear not, Berthaslave–we are with you.)

  96. Kathleen says:

Ahhh, he’s playing in the puddle-how cute.

  97. Kat says:

I think they have negated the warranty on that mattress!

  98. Kar says:

Heck with the racoon, where’s the squirrel?

  99. gravyboat says:

That is one of the cutest moose (meese?) I’ve ever seen. I want one!

  100. panajane says:

I need that music on 24 hours a day. It was awesome.

  101. jättiorava says:

Yay, nice to see some Finnish representation on your awesome pages! But having a moose as a house pet is actually quite rare. We Finns have this polar bear in the back yard -thing going!
….not really. Would be good though if you had really annoying neighbors?

For more Finnish-folk-kinda music, look up Hedningarna (Finn-Swedish) or Värttinä. And start dancing!!

  102. Beth says:

I think that moose sat on that guys face at the end. :)

Also the song is Leva’s Polka by Loituma, it’s Finnish as has been stated already.

  103. Vivian says:

MOOSEMOOSE! I love a good moose!

  104. Jane says:

Not only is this earworm available on iTunes, but you can get it as a *ringtone*!

    http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?i=64789331&id=64789345&s=143441

  105. Janni says:

Beth, it’s ievas polka, not Levas.
    Oddly intriguing, indeed. :)
