It’s a small company that makes everything fresh and prepared to the exact specifications of the sugar glider’s unique diet needs. I get it at a local pet supply store but you can order it online. Lucy’s favorites are the dried papaya bits, eucalyptus powder and pellets with fruit. I make her fresh fruit and other such things once in awhile but she does well with this stuff.

Sugar gliders are Australian native animals, and it’s illegal to export them.

Consequently, the only way they could have gotten out of the country was by cruel smuggling methods. Plenty of mothers and babies would have died after being stuffed into socks and cloth tubes, and sewn into the linings of coats and bags, in order to transport them illegally.

As cute as they are, it makes me sad to see our native fauna kept as pets overseas, knowing the trauma that they (or their parents) went through, whilst being smuggled out.

Please don’t support this cruel practice. Don’t buy pets / animals that were obtained through this selfish and murderous trade.

Australian Marsupials are protected animals. Let’s keep it that way.

For those wondering if gliders make good pets: they do, IF you are up for the challenge. They require a lot of care: you have to prepare their food for them because there is no commercially-made sugar glider feed (they are omnivores and need fruits as well as protein sources such as insects). Further, sugar gliders are very messy and have a certain scent which many people find unpleasant. If you have gliders you’ll need to clean up after them every day. They also require a large cage and are noisy at night, being nocturnal. Gliders do best in pairs, as they are social animals and get depressed if kept alone. They can live several years and if you get gliders and then realize you don’t want them, they can be hard to find homes for. They’re not for everyone.

I may be the minority here, but I honestly don’t think this is all that cute. It’s okay, I guess, but… i dunno. The bones sticking out and stuffs just… don’t do it for me. *ducks*
