World’s smallest puppeh!

by Meg on January 25, 2008

According to The Sun: this Chihuahua is "just a fraction taller than a cola can — was named the world’s smallest hound by the Guinness Book of Records and has finished growing.Four-year-old Brandy weighs only 2lbs and cannot even BARK as her lungs are too small. Owner Paulette Keller, of Largo, Florida, said: “When I saw her I just fell in love with her.”Paulette, 53, whose pint-sized pooch has become a hit on US TV, added: “With a dog like this you have to be careful. She can’t even jump on or off anything because her legs are so tiny."

bleen! cuuuute photo!

2 Cafern 01.25.08 at 2:30 am

Cyoot puppeh!

Ugli bone. :p I think I saw this puppeh on Oprah one time.

3 Heather 01.25.08 at 2:35 am

Cute puppy, but hideous, offensive bone. I went, “urrgh!” That’s just nasty.

4 Athena 01.25.08 at 2:35 am

Dogs shouldn’t be bread to be this small. A normal size Chihuahua is just as cute. She can’t even bark :(

5 Pearl Ostroff 01.25.08 at 2:35 am

That bone, I think, is a chicken drumstick bone.

Careful? I’d think you’d have to keep her in a cage so you wouldn’t step on her by mistake.

6 Beth 01.25.08 at 2:35 am

Do you ’spose she was supposed to be that wee? Or was she a wee accident?

A no-can-bark Cola-sized puppeh is prosh.

7 Pearl Ostroff 01.25.08 at 2:40 am

Chicken? I’ve changed my mind. Has to be from something bigger. Turkey?

8 Dan Bledwich 01.25.08 at 2:40 am

Bone trumps Pup. That thing is gross n ruins the photo!!

9 Shelly 01.25.08 at 2:40 am

I showed this to my bf and he said “I don’t know how that sucker managed to take down a t-rex but kudos to him.” LOL

10 Wendy 01.25.08 at 2:42 am

I don’t think it’s very cute either – poor dog is bred to be so small it can’t even bark or jump or do normal doggy stuff.

11 scott 01.25.08 at 2:45 am

aww poor puppeh :(

12 Helen 01.25.08 at 2:51 am

That’s not a dog it’s a rat.

13 carmini 01.25.08 at 2:51 am

lol, to me, i think this belongs in “Cute and sad” or something. She’s cute and all and i’m sure she has a great human but it does kinda suck not to be able to bark or jump off/onto stuff. hopefully this was just a mutation or some genetics thing. it’d be bad if ppl actually started to breed dogs this size… that’s kind of wrong =T

14 carmini 01.25.08 at 2:52 am

love her beeeautiful eyelashes by the way ^__^

15 beannyc 01.25.08 at 2:55 am

she so teeny tiny. i agree i hope no one is breeding this. if she is a runt, then it’s nature. i’d like to hold her though and cuddle. but then i would be afraid she’d get squashed

16 Annie 01.25.08 at 2:55 am

Teeny tiny cup size pup.
; )

17 Annie 01.25.08 at 2:55 am

a POP-eroni

18 Rahja 01.25.08 at 2:57 am

She wasn’t bred this way. She was still in mommies tummy when mommy was abandoned and highly malnutritioned when the owners found them. She almost didn’t make it and they wouldn’t let her register her until she was 2 years old. She is a miracle she is alive.

19 Lizzy 01.25.08 at 2:57 am

Athena – if this is the dog I’ve heard of, she was not bred to be this tiny. She is the runt of a litter born to a malnourished miniature chihuahua mother.

She she’s sooooo itty bitty! Pocket puppy! *takes puppy and puts her in pocket* Perfect!!

… Pocket pets category, perhaps?

20 Sara 01.25.08 at 2:57 am

If you go to the actual article, there is a better picture, of the dog with a pop can. Still… kinda creeps me out to see a dog this small. I agree with the others who said its sad.

21 DoodleyDog 01.25.08 at 2:59 am

Cute…and sad.

Too small to bark? That breaks my heart!

Poor puppeh!

22 Nanette 01.25.08 at 3:02 am

Look at her teeny tiny toofs!

23 Dave 01.25.08 at 3:04 am

Cute?! I always knew chihuahuas were vicious, but look what that thing did to her owner!

24 InAwwwe 01.25.08 at 3:08 am

Everyone says this pic is sad but by looking at this pup’s face she’s just as happy as any puppy I’ve ever seen …
And besides she probably doesn’t even notice that she can’t bark or jump … She’s probably thinks she’s just a wee bit big to be a hampster :D

25 sheila 01.25.08 at 3:12 am

That dog is adorable. I am sure she was not bred to be that small and is blessed to have an owner who loves her.

26 bdwilcox 01.25.08 at 3:17 am

Better hide the mousetraps…

27 Alex 01.25.08 at 3:25 am

Heather–Those bones smell awful and leave stinky crumblies all over the furniture, too. Definitely an outside toy at my house.

But the contrast between tiny doggie and giganto-bone scores high on the cutometer.

28 Andrea|Nash 01.25.08 at 3:34 am

Ahhh…I’m glad she’s a “miracle baby”…

What’s funny is, she thinks she’s a wolf! (all dogs do, y’know) Just look at those lips curl back over the slavering fangs!

You go, girl!

29 cass 01.25.08 at 3:35 am

Are you sure it’s not a hamster?

30 Beth 01.25.08 at 3:37 am

I see, she *was* a wee accident! It is sad that she can’t bark, but on the other hand, it’s amazing that she’s here at all! So I say kudos to her and her gi-normous bone. *Chomp*!

31 soxfan 01.25.08 at 3:39 am

She’s loved and her owner takes good care of her. Nothing sad about that!

She may never bark, but I bet she vocalizes in many other ways.

She’s wonderful!

32 Redzilla 01.25.08 at 3:59 am

I concur that this also needs to be tagged as “Pocket Pet.” I think I had a hamster bigger than this.

33 syd 01.25.08 at 3:59 am

That bone is disgusting.

34 berthaslave 01.25.08 at 4:07 am

Wow. It’s hard to process emotions, because you feel so bad for the pup on the one hand, but on the other it really IS a miracle that Brandy has survived. There are two kinds of “cute or sad?” — the kind where “sad” means laughably pathetic, and the kind where sad really means sad. This is definitely the latter, but overall I end up feeling good about it. Go, Brandy!

And while the bone IS a little gnarly, it’s a PERFECT pic! Li’l pup defeats monstrous odds!

35 chanpon 01.25.08 at 4:10 am

It’s a trap! Look at what she did to that animal. Kidding – she is absolutely adorable. She’s about 1/4 of the size of each of my kitties in weight.

36 Christine 01.25.08 at 4:57 am

Mine is also very small.
http://i29.tinypic.com/syw8aq.jpg

37 zfiledh 01.25.08 at 4:57 am

It’s a pocket pup!

38 trin 01.25.08 at 4:58 am

I’ve known FERRETS that weigh more than that dog… wow.

39 blair 01.25.08 at 5:15 am

eat your dinosaur bone li’l pupster and some day you’ll be as big and hairy as an akita

40 Shannon 01.25.08 at 5:26 am

Cute? Well sure! Ambitious? Obvy. But I think this should go in the Cute or Sad. We humans really shouldn’t breed dogs for this. Course she could just be a really realy small (even for a chihuahua) pup!

41 Karen 01.25.08 at 5:33 am

The puppy is cute, but I feel bad for it not being able to do normal doggy things. I’d rather have a dog that I can hug without breaking it.

42 soxfan 01.25.08 at 5:34 am

As an aside, dogs love bones. They don’t really care that they look gross! Stheriously! It’s making Brandy happy and that’s what counts.
And it makes an excellent photo op, that counts too. :)

I can’t help but stick a “the more you know” moment in here. So sowry! If you wanna give your dog a bone, go for raw bones.

43 rdg69 01.25.08 at 5:46 am

Thats the bones I get my dog. And she is 40 lbs. My dog cant even pick em up. Its a cow femur, BTW. I would be scared to have a dog that little in my house. I would lose it.

44 rdg69 01.25.08 at 5:48 am

Just wanted to add, my 40 lb dog has been chewing on her mammoth bone (thats what they are called) for 3 months, at least. I cant imagine how long it will take this little one to even make a dent in that bone.

45 mike d 01.25.08 at 5:58 am

this pup looks to me like he/she fights above his weight.

46 kayouko 01.25.08 at 5:59 am

That bone is awfully graphic for a website of cuteness. I’m surprised this image was even posted… Can’t admire the puppeh because of all the gore! :<

47 Jess 01.25.08 at 6:03 am

She can be friends with my hamster. They can have ham-pups. MeowWoof.

48 Jess 01.25.08 at 6:04 am

I mean, SqueakWoof

49 Annie 01.25.08 at 6:30 am

Gross bone. Geeee-rosssss. Cow femur? Ugh. Lol. I’m vegetarian too, so that’s even less appealing, eh? XD

Teh puppeh ish cute, tho! Definitely belongs in the cute or sad category as well, for its tinyness inhibits normal doggy activities! No jumping? Sheesh! Cutely pathetic, this one. :)

50 jp 01.25.08 at 6:48 am

leetle teef

51 Subhangi 01.25.08 at 6:52 am

OMG! Sooooo tiny. I bet one would have to constantly watch one’s feet to make sure they don’t step on her!

And Teho, we’ve got spam.

52 Tiare Dickinson 01.25.08 at 7:12 am

So cute but sooo small! I want a dog big enough that I can ruffle the fur on it’s butt with both hands.

53 Sarah 01.25.08 at 7:27 am

What is that bone? like a chicken drumstick?

54 varenoea 01.25.08 at 7:51 am

A puppy that can’t BARK or JUMP because its structure is too warped, and you say it’s CUTE?
It’s fucking torture for the dog. This is taking it one step further from he pugs who spend all their life fighting for breath. Bredding cripples on purpose should be forbidden by law.

This had better be a joke.

55 Sammys Mom >^..^ 01.25.08 at 9:23 am

Bad words on cuteoverload now? Please Varenoea — keep it PG!!! I do however, agree with your breeding comment. Sometimes ‘desireable’ features in bred animals are bad for them.

Cute dog, Hideous bone!

56 bananasforbunnies 01.25.08 at 9:51 am

What a cute little miracle pup! If I had, it’s little feets would never touch the ground as it would be on a coaster sized velvet cushion all day which I would be holding. The bone is bar-b-que’d and I bet very tasty, it looks so prehistoric, what a hoot! Hope it’s Mom and siblings are doing ok.

57 ECB 01.25.08 at 9:58 am

Did anyone else read the book “No Flying in the House” when they were a kid? That puppy reminds me of the drawings of the miniature magic dog Gloria from the book.

58 MaliceAlice 01.25.08 at 10:05 am

*sigh* Varenoea, please read the story. The dog was a ‘fucking’ accident. And your spelling leaves quite a lot to be desired if you want people to take you seriously.

Can’t believe everyone is freaking out over the bone. It’s a bone. Aren’t you people always bitching about how slaughterhouses waste cow parts and stuff?

59 stormeyes 01.25.08 at 10:16 am

I’m a little confused. How did they “register” her when they found her mother abandoned, and therefor could not possibly have her papers. Without the mother’s papers the pup can’t be registered with the AKC. At least the last time I checked that was the rule, but the pup is just adorable, although I would be terrified of steping on her!!

60 uma 01.25.08 at 11:03 am

poor pup – what a sad life – can’t jump, can’t bark :(

61 Gail 01.25.08 at 12:21 pm

WHO CARES if she can’t bark or jump???!!!

She has a home and a mommeh who loves her teeny little self.

Sorry for yelling, but I just don’t think that makes for a sad life! Much sadder to be in a shelter with no mommeh!

62 Desi 01.25.08 at 12:22 pm

My littlest cat is called Scraps, because he was found in a bin with all his dead brothers and sisters. He’s a bit small, for a tom, but not as small as this little lady. Sad that people are so cruel to animals, but happy that other people take care of them. Runt sounds so negative, but my runt is a fighter and I’m sure this pup is too! Scraps was a bit lonely when he was first with me as he’d lost his mother so young, so he used to suckle my earlobes for comfort. So I was his mother! Walking around with a tiny kitten on my shoulder like a cat-loving pirate…

63 Theresa 01.25.08 at 12:38 pm

Why do we always get to throwing out the baby with the bathwater? Who cares how that baby got here? She’s here, someone loves and cares for her (enough to give her T-Rex bones, LOL), and she’s adorable!

64 StormCat 01.25.08 at 12:58 pm

Isn’t it Cesar (the dog whisperer) that says that dogs live in the moment? They don’t worry about what they have or don’t have… They live for now… This little lady is obviously NOT hurting for love, or attention… She also doesn’t seem to notice/care that she was brought into the world with such tragic circumstances… All she knows is that she’s big in personality, loved, and ready to take on any bone given her…

We could all take a lesson from this little lady… Rock on lady!!!!!

65 Kaete 01.25.08 at 1:09 pm

stormeyes – Maybe by “register” they mean with the Guinness book of records, instead of with the AKC? Maybe Guinness wanted them to prove she was viable and not about to fall over dead from being too small.

Poor little thing. I’m glad she’s in a home that can take care of the special needs she has.

66 scigirl 01.25.08 at 1:45 pm

This pup survived against the odds and has a loving family – we should all be so lucky. My guess is that pup is perfectly happy with life and doesn’t see any of its shortcomings as a handicap. I bet any menacing cat would get its butt whupped…

67 mary78 01.25.08 at 2:04 pm

If this was my pup, I would always have a way to have her on my person so I knew I wouldn’t step on her. Maybe I could wear hooded sweatshirts 24/7 and she could hang out in the hoodie pouch? :) I would take her to work with me too! This is the sweeeeeeeeetest wittle baby!

68 rdg69 01.25.08 at 2:08 pm

Why are people freaking out over the bone??? News flash. Dogs, big and small alike, love to chew on bones. This one is much better than rawhide, much safer too. People happen to like the irony of buying a huge bone for a tiny dog. If the owner wants to spend $15 (yes, that how much this bone costs in petstores)on a bone for their little dog, then so be it. At least you can tell they care about their dog. Why else would they spend that much on a dog bome? It cant be used for anything else.

As for the dog not being able to bark or jump. If the dog never could do it, how would the dog miss it? Its not like it can rationally think and say, “man, I wish I could bark”. Its a dog, it cant miss something it never had. Is my dog missing running on the beach even though she has never been near a beach????

69 Theresa 01.25.08 at 2:13 pm

BTW, what on earth is so offensive about the bone? Dogs are carnivores, they don’t eat daisies.

70 Emmerly 01.25.08 at 2:17 pm

I am imagining a munchkin that tiny scampering across my floor right now, and it’s making me giggle. WHAT a cutie!

And will you look at that face! Adorable!

I actually think the bone works as great contrast in the pic. A huge, bulky, flaky dead thing near this adorable, light, curious and very alive thing.

71 b~ 01.25.08 at 2:19 pm

The bone is gross. And I don’t think there’s anything cute about a dog that can’t bark or jump onto the floor. If it is a natural occurence, then I am glad she has a nice foster mom. If she was bred like this then that is just awful. We all know that they are breeding super tiny dogs (with health problems and unfairly short life spans) for the likes of Paris and her wannabes. That’s not ethical.

72 Theresa 01.25.08 at 2:25 pm

Would someone please explain in a rational way what is offensive about that bone instead of just saying it is “gross”? “Gross” doesn’t explain anything.

73 rdg69 01.25.08 at 2:29 pm

b~: It was stated in the comments that the puppy was due to a momma chi (not even going to TRY to spell it) being malnourished by a mean owner. This puppy was the runt of the litter. It was NOT bred specifically to be this small.
It just happens that it is a very small dog. And again, the dog DOES NOT miss being able to bark or jump to the floor. How can it miss what it doesnt have. A dog is not capable of thinking rationally and does not realize that it cant do what other dogs can. Thats like saying dogs miss running wild in packs. They never did it, so how can they miss it?

74 rdg69 01.25.08 at 2:32 pm

Theresa: They are the type of people who dont like to think about the fact that cute little FeeFee is a carnivore and if left to their own devices, would kill and eat another animal without thinking twice. The thought of a dog chewing on a bone abhors them. All they can think about is that it is a bone, from a once living animal. Although, they should be glad that this owner is giving a more natural chew treat than some of the stuff out there (nylabones, rawhide, etc.)

75 19petals 01.25.08 at 2:38 pm

Heaven Sent Brandy was from a breeder who breeds show quality dogs, that is why she was “registerted”. She was from a breeder, but NO, she wasn’t supposed to be that small, she just was the runt.

76 Space Cowgirl 01.25.08 at 2:41 pm

A chihuahua who can’t bark! Awesome! I wish my neighbor across the way had 18 of this kind rather than the conventional ones.

77 Theresa 01.25.08 at 2:42 pm

So b~, given that these unethically bred dogs exist and are here, what is the ethical thing to do with them? Do we not feed, love and care for them while they are here? And perhaps let them enjoy their lives, whatever the span, and God forbid, even get a little pleasure out of them?

78 b~ 01.25.08 at 2:45 pm

rdg69 with all due respect, I cannot take “comments” posted by fellow co-ers as gospel. i don’t know what is true — she could be bred, she could be natural — i don’t know. it was also said that she is “registered.” how is that possible if she was not bred?? and anyway, did u not see the “either – or” tone of my comment? please don’t just comment on one part of my comment. thanks ~

79 brinnann 01.25.08 at 2:46 pm

WOW! Would you look at that? I found this higher up in the comments. Hmmm, I wonder if this will help people realize it WAS NOT bred this way.

“She wasn’t bred this way. She was still in mommies tummy when mommy was abandoned and highly malnutritioned when the owners found them. She almost didn’t make it and they wouldn’t let her register her until she was 2 years old. She is a miracle she is alive.
Rahja “

80 b~ 01.25.08 at 2:47 pm

Theresa, please! How can you take my comments and insinuate that I mean to “do anything” with the dogs. Really ??? Did I say anything beyond that??!! And did you read the other part of my comment? I said “IF.” You do know what “if” means, right?

81 Theresa 01.25.08 at 3:03 pm

~b, I was inviting you to take part in a discussion– and I certainly did notice the “if.” I probably did not state clearly enough that I was accepting your premise for the sake of argument. I understand fully– and I share– objections to unethical breeding practices. But my feeling is that we are still responsible for the animals that are here, by whatever means we brought them.

I understand how enjoying such animals can feel like a kind of trap to people who are truly devoted to animal rights and welfare. I understand and share their fears.

But I don’t think enjoying the appeal of this little girly need imply approval of bad breeding practices, or imply that we now want to reproduce a million more of her. Not on CO. This is a pretty conscientious crowd here.

82 chloe 01.25.08 at 3:07 pm

So lovely ! I saw her, I love her!

83 brinnann 01.25.08 at 3:15 pm

b~, So it’s better to take someone’s assumption that she was bred to be this small, rather than believe the comments of someone who claims to have heard her story as truth?

84 rubber duck 01.25.08 at 3:22 pm

Awwww poor wee thingy. Her life didn’t start well, but I hope she’ll have a healthy, happy life nevertheless! *pats the doggie very very gently*

85 b~ 01.25.08 at 3:26 pm

Theresa, Thanks for the long explanation. I kinda got offended b/c there are people who contend that certain animals should be euthanized for certain reasons (this being one of them), and I think that’s so disgusting. I now see the “accepting my premise for the sake of argument” slant; sorry for being so defensive.

86 Gwen 01.25.08 at 3:27 pm

This isn’t cute, it’s grotesque–that dog can’t even act like a normal dog! It would be like saying a child with a deformity is cute just because it was small.

87 b~ 01.25.08 at 3:32 pm

brinnann — read my whole comment before commenting, thanks. i don’t know why so many people are attacking my personal post(that if you READ in its entirety, has a caveat). i am entitled to my opinion. if you don’t like it, you can ignore me. just like i ignore many things that are posted on here as well … have a nice day everyone. :)

88 rubber duck 01.25.08 at 3:34 pm

Er, now I’m confused though – where did the story of her mum being malnourished etc. come from? In the Daily Mail the owner actually says “Brandy is very healthy – she came from a breeder who breeds show-quality animals. But Brandy was a fluke. She came from a litter of five and when she was born, she was just miniature.”
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=509976&in_page_id=1770

89 catablob 01.25.08 at 3:38 pm

Oh, that poor bone. All it wants to do is lay there and rot, but it has to have its picture taken next to that evil genetically engineered “dog!” Just to give someone a cheap laugh.
Shameful.

90 brinnann 01.25.08 at 3:38 pm

You mean this: “I cannot take “comments” posted by fellow co-ers as gospel.”
b~ | Jan 25, 2008 at 06:45 AM

So everyone, lets just assume she was intended to be deformed, k?

91 rdg69 01.25.08 at 3:40 pm

Gwen: just because the dog cant bark and isnt allowed (not that it cant)jump off high places does not mean it cant act like a normal dog. Basenjis cant bark, they have more of a yodel. does that mean they cant act like a normal dog? All dogs have to be prevented from jumping off something. All dogs are prone to injury from jumping off places that is high to them. Its not that this dog cannot jump, they just cant let it jump from high places. At least someone was kind enough to open their home to a dog that was born through unfortunate circumstances. It was not bred that way. The momma was abandoned and malnourished. Would you rather they kill the dog so it cant experience life at all????

that bone actually looks really good to me…but given the choice, i guess (sigh) i’d have to let the teeny prosh puppers keep it.

**closing eyes tight and wishing REALLY hard that people would read the previous comments BEFORE making an ill-informed and/or repetitive comment themselves.**

95 Maria 01.25.08 at 3:55 pm

that really seems like a sad puppy dog. I don’t imagine you can even squeeze him without breaking something. I want a dog I can play with, not something so fragile you can only look at it and try to keep it from hurting itself.

Just sad.

96 Katrina 01.25.08 at 4:06 pm

I’d just get a bra a size or two bigger and have a ‘dog in rack’. That way the pupper is warm, safe and visible with a cardigan. Otherwise a fanny pack in front. I’d protect it and give it appropriately-sized goodies when we get home. I bet it is awfully cute to snuggle, carefully. Good luck tiiiny little puppeh. Don’t we all know that is unethical already? Do we need the sermons? This Cute Overload, folks, CUTE! Sincerely Cute!

97 b~ 01.25.08 at 4:09 pm

rubber duck — thank you for posting a real article and not “what you think” or “what you remembered you heard.” Clearly she was bred (though not bred to be that small) and not the baby of a malnourished mistreated mom. Facts, information — things that intelligent people like to have access to before making a decision one way or another.

98 Ginger's Cotton Socks 01.25.08 at 4:13 pm

ADORABLE!!! Awww, bless her little heart! I prefer big, snuggly dogs myself (yay St Bernards and their pillowy-soft bellehs!) but I can’t deny the cute. The bone brings out the little teefs!

And guys and gals, you can’t deny a dog a bone, even if it’s a Chihuaha.

*wishes with Lisa*
I do believe in Fairies… I do believe in Fairies…
I do! I do! I DO believe in Fairies!

99 Ginger's Cotton Socks 01.25.08 at 4:16 pm

Woah, ~b!

Hate to welcome you to the Real World, but even Pedigree Showdogs get abandoned! You don’t have to be specifically BRED to be registered, you just need to be purebred, which this little puppy is!

Facts, Information. Things that intelligent people like us read, accept and snuggle the puppy afterwards.

100 Dominic 01.25.08 at 4:17 pm

I am friends with the good people at Heaven Sent Chihuahuas who bread this dog. She was NOT bread to be this small, she was the runt of the litter. I have held this dog in my own hands and she is a sweetheart, and believe me, she was very petable. Heaven Sent are responsible breeders who produce happy, healthy puppies.

101 Freak 01.25.08 at 4:19 pm

If she’s a Chihuahua, then she’s not a hound, and she’s not a mutt.

Hey! I just watched the cutest video! Check out the latest adventure of Mookie and Sam (two of the world’s cutest dogs) on youtube. Their new video is called “Sam goes to Texas” and it’s really funny!

Ginger’s Cotton Socks — please point to exactly where i contended that you have to be SPECIFICALLY bred to be registered. ***crickets chirping*** exactly. and read my comments in chronological order and in the context of what other people posted. thanks ~

104 me-me-me 01.25.08 at 4:58 pm

My 7 lb pom can’t jump up on furniture or walk up our stairs to the bedroom – I carry her. Nothing wrong with that in my opinion. ANd some dogs shouldn’t be jumping anyway – bad knees, bad backs, etc in various breeds. I just hope this tiny pups lungs aren’t a health concern for her. I am sure she doesn’t care that it can’t jump or bark. I think she is darling.

105 ThreeCatNight 01.25.08 at 5:48 pm

Puppeh to bone:
“And this is what happens to any intruder who tries to steal my food! Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!” (laughs evilly)

But seriously – why all the clamor about her size?
She’s obviously well-loved, and a very lucky little pup.

106 LisaL 01.25.08 at 6:03 pm

Lol awww.. Poor lil thing. Such a tough life before it was even born, but thankfully it’s momma and siblings were taken care of and I’m sure all were given loving homes.
I’m not a chihuahua person but they are cute lil suckers.

107 okies 01.25.08 at 6:25 pm

Yeah, um folks? (looks at a couple in particular)…can we like, totally drop the bitchiness? It’s unbecoming to humanity in general, kay?

It also totally ruins visits to CuteOverload too. To click on comments and find a load of bitchiness.

(and yeah, totally not responding to anyone who might respond to me after this. Totally done with the comments section, sick of bitchiness in general. Will still come look at the pics and vids. Just don’t care to spoil the visit anymore by reading someone getting all snarky because someone spoke back to them.)

108 CoffeeCup 01.25.08 at 6:32 pm

I don’t think Brandy’s the champ anymore…

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/orl-littledog2707apr27,0,7141107.story?coll=orl-news-headlines

That’s an article about a 4-inch tall chihuahua. Brandy was 6 inches.

109 K 01.25.08 at 6:34 pm

She IS cute, but shouldn’t she also be in the “Cute or Sad” category? I mean, CO does have a category for that sort of thing…

It’s not inherently sad that she’s small, or that she’s been bred to be small, but that her size limits her to such a large degree — she cannot vocalize and is exceedingly brittle.

But, again, she IS cute. ;P

110 kar 01.25.08 at 6:52 pm

I can’t believe no one’s making pudding yet. Frankly, this owner goes under “rescuer” in my book for taking on such a severe case. She even walks her in a special walker so the wee one doesn’t get trampled.

I think she said a stranger offered her $50,000 in the vet’s office for him.

111 Carly 01.25.08 at 6:53 pm

dude — my rabbits should not be able to kick any dog’s ass.

Seriously, I think my rabbit could take her.

Definitely, “cute but sad.”

112 mberkie0 01.25.08 at 6:58 pm

I’d like to “nuff” on the nuffers here – Brandy-puppers deserves all the gusto she can get her teeny teef into, and she seems to be doing pretty well for herself, goin’ for the gusto. She has a big doggie sibling to protect her and to “pack up” with, and a bone that outweighs her by many times. Could any puppers want more? I don’t theenk so…..So NUFF on you, nuffers!

113 soxfan 01.25.08 at 7:18 pm

CoffeeCup, I could be wrong, but I think Brandy is 6″ long and that’s the record she won.

Tallness (or lack thereof, teehee) is a different category.

114 Kai 01.25.08 at 7:24 pm

Sometimes it does get hard to read the comments… It’s like ControversyOverload- and I can go to YouTube for that. I am an animal lover but unfortunately I witnessed some real cruelty against animals when I was young… I won’t go into detail of why unless I’m asked. So, I’m really sensitive to the suffering of animals. The animals here seem content and cared for, and as happy as they can be. No one is trying to do them wrong. Some things just don’t turn out well in life- I have mental disorders, is it cruel and terrible that I was born? Life isn’t always raspberries and cream but when you’re cared about (which all these animals seem to be) then life is better. I come here for a break from life and I feel relaxed by the cute. Why do people get so upset over these? I guess they aren’t cute enough or something for people to get riled up over almost every post. Maybe there’s so much cute some fuses get blown in people’s brains and they can’t think rationally. I don’t know. But try to see the best of the situation, please?

115 CheshireCat 01.25.08 at 7:46 pm

Well said Kai!
As for the this half-pint puppeh: O..M..G I can hardy breathe…my heart is breaking… from the overwhelming…cuteness.♥

116 CheshireCat 01.25.08 at 7:47 pm

*hardly. I apparently can’t spell either.

117 Xenobiologista 01.25.08 at 8:03 pm

Agree with Lisa – please read previous comments AND click through links to get the whole story first before exploding in rage. The Daily Mail story that sundryreasons linked to is good on the particulars.

Summary so far: Brandy is a genetic and/or developmental accident, she’s maybe not a fully-functioning dog, but otherwise seems happy and healthy. No more yelling at her owner or breeder, ‘k?

118 Alicia 01.25.08 at 8:36 pm

Friggin’ tiny. :O

I’m actually surprised CO still allows comments on their posts, though… If I ran the blog, I would’ve given up on them. Someone always has to complain/whine/make things unpleasant. *sigh* Kudos to your patients, Meg.

119 Teresa 01.25.08 at 8:36 pm

Look people, I’ve read all the comments. Who cares about the bone? It’s a prop. The dog is CUTE and here for the rest of it’s life. A very lucky dog.

120 M. 01.25.08 at 8:44 pm

Keep it away from all the fashionistas!

121 maygan cooper 01.25.08 at 9:00 pm

That is so cute the bone is about to swollow him

122 Annie 01.25.08 at 9:13 pm

Ahh I think I see the problem people have gotten the two different dogs stories mixed up..

this dog pictures above and the dog in the link from coffee cup a couple of posts prior to this one.

Carry on with the cute.

123 SJ 01.25.08 at 9:43 pm

This isn’t cute, it’s an unhealthy science experiment. Stop messing with mother nature.

Yo SJ: “Summary so far: Brandy is a genetic and/or developmental accident, she’s maybe not a fully-functioning dog, but otherwise seems happy and healthy. No more yelling at her owner or breeder, ‘k?

125 Pliny 01.25.08 at 11:09 pm

The article that sundryreasons posted has, in my opinion, a cuter photo wherein the smallness of the dog is more noticeable. With the giant bone, it is difficult to tell that Brandy is, in fact, so very tiny.

-Not to say that I find anything wrong with the bone photo. Hope they don’t have white carpet…

Here’s a question (and I hope it doesn’t incite a riot): Isn’t relative smallness a consideration for breeders of ‘toy’ dogs? That is, aren’t they, among other things, aiming for small products? Just wondering…Please be nice to eachother.

126 mathew 01.25.08 at 11:15 pm

really cute

127 Amber 01.25.08 at 11:16 pm

Apparently I’m in the minority on this, but a chihauhau that can’t bark? Sold! Where can I find one? More malnourished momma chihauhaus, I say.

128 Emily 01.25.08 at 11:22 pm

I bet she can jump on small things. Her reach is probably just proportional to her size. We’re thinking too big…

132 berthaslave 01.26.08 at 1:27 am

Speaking on behalf of the regulars:

Hey, B- :

Instead of getting everyone’s dander up with your ideas and emotions, you could have just clicked on the link. Obviously, the smallest amount of research would have answered your initial charge that this may be animal cruelty.

People on C.O. are pretty sensitive to issues of animal cruelty — obviously you haven’t been around very long, because similar debates are prompted whenever we get a pic or video of the dwarf-like cats. There’s no point for you to lecture us on what is and isn’t appropriate in terms of breeding, we all get it. If this dog was actually bred to be dangerously small, we would have been all over it, and I think Meg herself probably would have caught it.

Of course, you’re welcome to post comments a much as you want, but I think you’ll find we’re a bit more polite around here. We don’t generally engage in tit-for-tat “You suck because you didn’t read my comment correctly” or “Don’t misquote me” arguments. You can engage in those over at politico.com or wherever, but if someone disagrees with you here, or you have a different opinion, just note it and move on. You don’t get any points for being “right” or being “better.”

:: off soapbox ::

P.S. Re the bone: I’m an omnivore and bones don’t bother me at all, but that one is particularly gnarly, so I can see why some people are a bit put off by it in an otherwise super-cute pic.

133 Gail 01.26.08 at 2:30 am

Yay, Berthaslave!!!!!

Pudding for all!! I will ask Mr. Harrumphy-pants to lend us Jeeves to serve us in the solarium!!!!

134 charmingtail 01.26.08 at 2:35 am

I have 3 chihuahuas I would just love to have her…my smallest is 3 lbs and biggest is 5.4 lbs.

135 rikku 01.26.08 at 2:40 am

First of all: Awwwww!!! So cute, and she looks exceedingly happy even if she can’t bark. BTW so what if she can’t? One of my pups can’t climb the stairs (granted, she can’t yet, but whatev) and she’d perfectly contented.
Second of all: Can we all say “commentroversy”? Anyone, anyone?
Third of all: It’s a BONE. People, get over it. Dogs. Eat. Bones. It’s that simple. Otters eat clams, and clams look pretty gnarly (when they’re open), but if someone posted an otter with an open clam, everyone would be drooling all over it.
Sheesh.
But anyway, adorable pupster.

136 MMc 01.26.08 at 2:41 am

“Of course, you’re welcome to post comments a much as you want, but I think you’ll find we’re a bit more polite around here. Ah, yeah, berthaslave, not so much. I’ve often found the “regulars” to be the rudest ones of all on CO, telling people to “shut up” and enjoy the cute etc. People who raise concerns can expect to get their heads bitten off.

While I agree that it gets tedious to see the same concerns raised over and over when the story has already been clarified, it’s important for both sides to not hyperblize each other’s statements. When Theresa posted this:

“So b~, given that these unethically bred dogs exist and are here, what is the ethical thing to do with them? Do we not feed, love and care for them while they are here? And perhaps let them enjoy their lives, whatever the span, and God forbid, even get a little pleasure out of them?

it was, frankly, ridiculous. B in no way suggested that the little chi be put down or neglected. Suggesting that being concerned about ethical breeding practices means you don’t care about animals with physical ailments is both stupid and offensive. I understand why b got pissed off.

Anyway, I don’t know why I bother to read the comments anymore. The vitriol from both sides always annoys the hell out of me. *must remember to only look at pictures*

137 rikku 01.26.08 at 2:59 am

One thing I forgot: has anyone noticed the FEETS?????!?!?!?!?! *giggle* soooooo tiny.

138 CathyDee 01.26.08 at 3:30 am

Do you think the neighborhood kittehs laugh at her behind her back?

I just wanna stroke that little stripe between her brows–with my pinkie finger, of course.

139 CathyDee 01.26.08 at 3:59 am

I would love to snorgle her, but I fear that both of us would be traumatized–I imagine walking into an emergency room with one of those teensy, weensy paws sticking out of my nose. I don’t think my Blue Cross plan covers the extraction of a wedged puppeh in great tightness.

140 Dajia 01.26.08 at 4:06 am

OMG!!! This puppy is sooooooooo… cute

141 A Lady 01.26.08 at 4:26 am

The bone is gross gross gross gross. I never bought those for my dog ’cause I knew that no matter how much training he got, he’d find a way to sneak it into the house and drag its slobberiness all over the carpet and upholstery leading up to my bedroom with its final resting place being my pillow.

142 berthaslave 01.26.08 at 8:11 am

Not sure which blog you are reading, MMc. Most of the regulars have nuffed at one point or another and we get ribbed for it (or not), and by and large people are usually quite in agreement about the pics. I don’t think I’ve ever read anyone saying “Shut up,” though we do get impatient with people who don’t read previous postings or start to freak out about how horrible it is for a cat and a mouse to be friends or whatever. This is an exceptionally positive community and I certainly don’t mind reading other people’s opinions, even if they seem to be ill-informed. But I don’t like it when people nitpick and attack and try to prove they have to be right and that everyone else is wrong. And quite frankly, it’s not that serious. I don’t see any heads bitten off around here, and believe me, I spend a LOT of time here. But maybe that’s just me. Maybe I notice the nice things more than the not-so-nice. Whatevs.

Let’s here it for respectful differing opinions without sniping (I’m looking at you, two leading Democratic candidates…)!

143 laserone 01.26.08 at 9:27 am

I hope this dog has a website or blog. I’d love to see more pix!

144 slythwolf 01.26.08 at 9:49 am

The bone is icky. :(

145 Jody 01.26.08 at 10:13 am

She is so precious..However,it is a sin the length a person will go at the expense of these poor little creatures.Breeding in many cases is just wrong.

146 Jody 01.26.08 at 10:14 am

She is so precious..However,it is a sin the length a person will go at the expense of these poor little creatures.Breeding in many cases is just wrong.

147 Patricia 01.26.08 at 2:20 pm

I have found that when you express opinions, especially strong and controversial one, you open the door for criticism and argument, if you aren’t prepared for that then don’t make them. Also breaking down an argument point for point without resorting to rudeness and name calling is the best way to reply to such comments.

VERY cute little doggy, I hope she has a great life, and more big bones.

148 Brandi 01.26.08 at 6:30 pm

It is cute, but I have to agree that is wrong to breed an animal so small that they cannot even live like a normal dog. I am surprised that it’s lived to be 4 years old, actually. Poor pup.

149 Annie J 01.26.08 at 7:23 pm

I posted this before:

“Gross bone.

After having read some of the (helpful) comments, I just wanted to apologize. I am definitely an animal lover of all sorts. While I am opposed to slaughtering any animal, I acknowledge that the industry exists. Therefore, while I may find the bone visually unappealing, I understand that dogs chew bones, and if this one is healthier for the pup, then power to it! I apologize if my vegetarianism offended anyone.

I guess I never realized that some dogs don’t jump/bark/do “normal” doggy things anyway. I apologize for my oblivion, and I don’t think that this is something that belongs in the cute/sad category.

I am sincerely apologetic for my stupidness. Power to Meg – keep posting cute stuff! :)

Props to Rikku – I think her feetsies are cute tooooo! <33

150 Sharon Wilson 01.26.08 at 9:05 pm

Wouldn’t this picture make a GREAT motivational poster? “Never give up!”

151 cadet 01.27.08 at 3:21 am

Geez ppl read b4 you speak..This dog is a miracle….Lucky to be alive and all you can talk about is how gross the bone is…guess you have never had a baby or seen one delivered huh…Kudos to the owner who rescued her and is giving her great love…and the bone is just beautiful too

152 Kimski 01.27.08 at 12:17 pm

Is there chihuahua in the pudding? ’cause I’m against that!

I don’t find this “sad” any more than I find the “disabled” people I work with “sad”, though sometimes it’s f**ked the way “normal” people treat them.

This little puppeh has a life to live and I’m sure she’s getting on with it and tackling the big bones and doesn’t need anyone to feel sorry for her.

153 varenoea 01.27.08 at 8:41 pm

Aaaw. Little Malice Alice has a problem with my spelling. Well, not everybody is born in the Great States Of Ameria. There are, believe it or not, other parts of the world. Deal with non-native speakers, or put a star-spangled blanket over your head.

Apart from this – there is no way that a puppy can be an accident if it belongs to a race that is bred to be unnatural. I suggest you get your head into the matter. I’m a zoologist, but what are you?

154 okies 01.27.08 at 10:09 pm

varenoea.

It’s comments like yours that are the entire reason I tend to avoid the comments section for the most part.

Could you TRY to be nice? Please? Lose the snarky attitude? That would totally rock and put an end to the Anti-Cute vibe that none of us want.

155 Rahja 01.28.08 at 12:49 pm

It is amazing that a zoologist who brags about their knowledge about one type of animal when knowingly most zoologists couldn’t possibly specialize in ALL animals, namely the idea that zoologists mostly get a tidbit when it comes to domesticated animals in their education.

With that, allow me to educate you. The Chihuahua was not actually found until the 1850’s and originally thought to be a direct decedent to the Chinese crested. That has since been proven inaccurate. However, just would like to point out that in the 1850’s it was more than likely that the dog breed itself is much older than 158 years old and considering we ALL know how far our scientific knowledge has come since then there was NO WAY that they would have known that this particular breed would have the consistent problems of seizures, hypoglycemia and hydrocephalus, just to name a few. However, should you wish to argue the point, then we could also use the Great Dane as a breed that ’shouldn’t have ever been breed’ because of their poor health conditions and short life expectancy. Or possibly the idea that a family shouldn’t breed just because there is a history diabetes, polycystic fibrosis or epilepsy (all diseases that COULD be passed on).

What you are doing is just antagonizing and it seems to me that is the reason you work with animals, because you don’t have the social graces that you should have been brought up with in order to at least have the common decency to know if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. But then again, if you didn’t like where you were living, then maybe you should relocate, because I for one believe that American’s were given the right to free speech for a reason…just use it properly and you will gain more respect than some degree. You can be as book smart as you want, but if you don’t have the common sense to look both way’s before crossing the street, it doesn’t do you a bit of good.

btw: My credentials don’t really matter, but I am an Ex Registered Nurse and have worked for over 30 years in Veterinarian Science.

156 spacebunny 01.28.08 at 4:44 pm

I saw one of these bones for sale at Publix in the meat section. It’s actually a very large bone, nearly the size of a human femur bone. Wow, that’s a scary thought.

157 jenben 01.28.08 at 5:34 pm
