She wasn’t bred this way. She was still in mommies tummy when mommy was abandoned and highly malnutritioned when the owners found them. She almost didn’t make it and they wouldn’t let her register her until she was 2 years old. She is a miracle she is alive.

Wow. It’s hard to process emotions, because you feel so bad for the pup on the one hand, but on the other it really IS a miracle that Brandy has survived. There are two kinds of “cute or sad?” — the kind where “sad” means laughably pathetic, and the kind where sad really means sad. This is definitely the latter, but overall I end up feeling good about it. Go, Brandy!
And while the bone IS a little gnarly, it’s a PERFECT pic! Li’l pup defeats monstrous odds!

Cute? Well sure! Ambitious? Obvy. But I think this should go in the Cute or Sad. We humans really shouldn’t breed dogs for this. Course she could just be a really realy small (even for a chihuahua) pup!
The puppy is cute, but I feel bad for it not being able to do normal doggy things. I’d rather have a dog that I can hug without breaking it.
As an aside, dogs love bones. They don’t really care that they look gross! Stheriously! It’s making Brandy happy and that’s what counts.

Thats the bones I get my dog. And she is 40 lbs. My dog cant even pick em up. Its a cow femur, BTW. I would be scared to have a dog that little in my house. I would lose it.
Just wanted to add, my 40 lb dog has been chewing on her mammoth bone (thats what they are called) for 3 months, at least. I cant imagine how long it will take this little one to even make a dent in that bone.

What a cute little miracle pup! If I had, it’s little feets would never touch the ground as it would be on a coaster sized velvet cushion all day which I would be holding. The bone is bar-b-que’d and I bet very tasty, it looks so prehistoric, what a hoot! Hope it’s Mom and siblings are doing ok.

I’m a little confused. How did they “register” her when they found her mother abandoned, and therefor could not possibly have her papers. Without the mother’s papers the pup can’t be registered with the AKC. At least the last time I checked that was the rule, but the pup is just adorable, although I would be terrified of steping on her!!

My littlest cat is called Scraps, because he was found in a bin with all his dead brothers and sisters. He’s a bit small, for a tom, but not as small as this little lady. Sad that people are so cruel to animals, but happy that other people take care of them. Runt sounds so negative, but my runt is a fighter and I’m sure this pup is too! Scraps was a bit lonely when he was first with me as he’d lost his mother so young, so he used to suckle my earlobes for comfort. So I was his mother! Walking around with a tiny kitten on my shoulder like a cat-loving pirate…
Why do we always get to throwing out the baby with the bathwater? Who cares how that baby got here? She’s here, someone loves and cares for her (enough to give her T-Rex bones, LOL), and she’s adorable!
Isn’t it Cesar (the dog whisperer) that says that dogs live in the moment? They don’t worry about what they have or don’t have… They live for now… This little lady is obviously NOT hurting for love, or attention… She also doesn’t seem to notice/care that she was brought into the world with such tragic circumstances… All she knows is that she’s big in personality, loved, and ready to take on any bone given her…

Why are people freaking out over the bone??? News flash. Dogs, big and small alike, love to chew on bones. This one is much better than rawhide, much safer too. People happen to like the irony of buying a huge bone for a tiny dog. If the owner wants to spend $15 (yes, that how much this bone costs in petstores)on a bone for their little dog, then so be it. At least you can tell they care about their dog. Why else would they spend that much on a dog bome? It cant be used for anything else.
As for the dog not being able to bark or jump. If the dog never could do it, how would the dog miss it? Its not like it can rationally think and say, “man, I wish I could bark”. Its a dog, it cant miss something it never had. Is my dog missing running on the beach even though she has never been near a beach????

I actually think the bone works as great contrast in the pic. A huge, bulky, flaky dead thing near this adorable, light, curious and very alive thing.
The bone is gross. And I don’t think there’s anything cute about a dog that can’t bark or jump onto the floor. If it is a natural occurence, then I am glad she has a nice foster mom. If she was bred like this then that is just awful. We all know that they are breeding super tiny dogs (with health problems and unfairly short life spans) for the likes of Paris and her wannabes. That’s not ethical.

It just happens that it is a very small dog. And again, the dog DOES NOT miss being able to bark or jump to the floor. How can it miss what it doesnt have. A dog is not capable of thinking rationally and does not realize that it cant do what other dogs can. Thats like saying dogs miss running wild in packs. They never did it, so how can they miss it?
Theresa: They are the type of people who dont like to think about the fact that cute little FeeFee is a carnivore and if left to their own devices, would kill and eat another animal without thinking twice. The thought of a dog chewing on a bone abhors them. All they can think about is that it is a bone, from a once living animal. Although, they should be glad that this owner is giving a more natural chew treat than some of the stuff out there (nylabones, rawhide, etc.)
Heaven Sent Brandy was from a breeder who breeds show quality dogs, that is why she was “registerted”. She was from a breeder, but NO, she wasn’t supposed to be that small, she just was the runt.

I understand fully– and I share– objections to unethical breeding practices. But my feeling is that we are still responsible for the animals that are here, by whatever means we brought them.
I understand how enjoying such animals can feel like a kind of trap to people who are truly devoted to animal rights and welfare. I understand and share their fears.

Basenjis cant bark, they have more of a yodel. does that mean they cant act like a normal dog? All dogs have to be prevented from jumping off something. All dogs are prone to injury from jumping off places that is high to them. Its not that this dog cannot jump, they just cant let it jump from high places. At least someone was kind enough to open their home to a dog that was born through unfortunate circumstances. It was not bred that way. The momma was abandoned and malnourished. Would you rather they kill the dog so it cant experience life at all????

I am friends with the good people at Heaven Sent Chihuahuas who bread this dog. She was NOT bread to be this small, she was the runt of the litter. I have held this dog in my own hands and she is a sweetheart, and believe me, she was very petable. Heaven Sent are responsible breeders who produce happy, healthy puppies.
If she’s a Chihuahua, then she’s not a hound, and she’s not a mutt.

My 7 lb pom can’t jump up on furniture or walk up our stairs to the bedroom – I carry her. Nothing wrong with that in my opinion. ANd some dogs shouldn’t be jumping anyway – bad knees, bad backs, etc in various breeds. I just hope this tiny pups lungs aren’t a health concern for her. I am sure she doesn’t care that it can’t jump or bark. I think she is darling.

It’s not inherently sad that she’s small, or that she’s been bred to be small, but that her size limits her to such a large degree — she cannot vocalize and is exceedingly brittle.

I can’t believe no one’s making pudding yet. Frankly, this owner goes under “rescuer” in my book for taking on such a severe case. She even walks her in a special walker so the wee one doesn’t get trampled.

Sometimes it does get hard to read the comments… It’s like ControversyOverload- and I can go to YouTube for that. I am an animal lover but unfortunately I witnessed some real cruelty against animals when I was young… I won’t go into detail of why unless I’m asked. So, I’m really sensitive to the suffering of animals. The animals here seem content and cared for, and as happy as they can be. No one is trying to do them wrong. Some things just don’t turn out well in life- I have mental disorders, is it cruel and terrible that I was born? Life isn’t always raspberries and cream but when you’re cared about (which all these animals seem to be) then life is better. I come here for a break from life and I feel relaxed by the cute. Why do people get so upset over these? I guess they aren’t cute enough or something for people to get riled up over almost every post. Maybe there’s so much cute some fuses get blown in people’s brains and they can’t think rationally. I don’t know. But try to see the best of the situation, please?

The article that sundryreasons posted has, in my opinion, a cuter photo wherein the smallness of the dog is more noticeable. With the giant bone, it is difficult to tell that Brandy is, in fact, so very tiny.

Here’s a question (and I hope it doesn’t incite a riot): Isn’t relative smallness a consideration for breeders of ‘toy’ dogs? That is, aren’t they, among other things, aiming for small products? Just wondering…Please be nice to eachother.

Instead of getting everyone’s dander up with your ideas and emotions, you could have just clicked on the link. Obviously, the smallest amount of research would have answered your initial charge that this may be animal cruelty.
People on C.O. are pretty sensitive to issues of animal cruelty — obviously you haven’t been around very long, because similar debates are prompted whenever we get a pic or video of the dwarf-like cats. There’s no point for you to lecture us on what is and isn’t appropriate in terms of breeding, we all get it. If this dog was actually bred to be dangerously small, we would have been all over it, and I think Meg herself probably would have caught it.
Of course, you’re welcome to post comments a much as you want, but I think you’ll find we’re a bit more polite around here. We don’t generally engage in tit-for-tat “You suck because you didn’t read my comment correctly” or “Don’t misquote me” arguments. You can engage in those over at politico.com or wherever, but if someone disagrees with you here, or you have a different opinion, just note it and move on. You don’t get any points for being “right” or being “better.”

I have 3 chihuahuas I would just love to have her…my smallest is 3 lbs and biggest is 5.4 lbs.
First of all: Awwwww!!! So cute, and she looks exceedingly happy even if she can’t bark. BTW so what if she can’t? One of my pups can’t climb the stairs (granted, she can’t yet, but whatev) and she’d perfectly contented.
Second of all: Can we all say “commentroversy”? Anyone, anyone?
Third of all: It’s a BONE. People, get over it. Dogs. Eat. Bones. It’s that simple. Otters eat clams, and clams look pretty gnarly (when they’re open), but if someone posted an otter with an open clam, everyone would be drooling all over it.

Ah, yeah, berthaslave, not so much. I’ve often found the “regulars” to be the rudest ones of all on CO, telling people to “shut up” and enjoy the cute etc. People who raise concerns can expect to get their heads bitten off.
While I agree that it gets tedious to see the same concerns raised over and over when the story has already been clarified, it’s important for both sides to not hyperblize each other’s statements. When Theresa posted this:

The bone is gross gross gross gross. I never bought those for my dog ’cause I knew that no matter how much training he got, he’d find a way to sneak it into the house and drag its slobberiness all over the carpet and upholstery leading up to my bedroom with its final resting place being my pillow.
Not sure which blog you are reading, MMc. Most of the regulars have nuffed at one point or another and we get ribbed for it (or not), and by and large people are usually quite in agreement about the pics. I don’t think I’ve ever read anyone saying “Shut up,” though we do get impatient with people who don’t read previous postings or start to freak out about how horrible it is for a cat and a mouse to be friends or whatever. This is an exceptionally positive community and I certainly don’t mind reading other people’s opinions, even if they seem to be ill-informed. But I don’t like it when people nitpick and attack and try to prove they have to be right and that everyone else is wrong. And quite frankly, it’s not that serious. I don’t see any heads bitten off around here, and believe me, I spend a LOT of time here. But maybe that’s just me. Maybe I notice the nice things more than the not-so-nice. Whatevs.
Let’s here it for respectful differing opinions without sniping (I’m looking at you, two leading Democratic candidates…)!

I have found that when you express opinions, especially strong and controversial one, you open the door for criticism and argument, if you aren’t prepared for that then don’t make them. Also breaking down an argument point for point without resorting to rudeness and name calling is the best way to reply to such comments.

It is cute, but I have to agree that is wrong to breed an animal so small that they cannot even live like a normal dog. I am surprised that it’s lived to be 4 years old, actually. Poor pup.

After having read some of the (helpful) comments, I just wanted to apologize. I am definitely an animal lover of all sorts. While I am opposed to slaughtering any animal, I acknowledge that the industry exists. Therefore, while I may find the bone visually unappealing, I understand that dogs chew bones, and if this one is healthier for the pup, then power to it! I apologize if my vegetarianism offended anyone.
I guess I never realized that some dogs don’t jump/bark/do “normal” doggy things anyway. I apologize for my oblivion, and I don’t think that this is something that belongs in the cute/sad category.

It is amazing that a zoologist who brags about their knowledge about one type of animal when knowingly most zoologists couldn’t possibly specialize in ALL animals, namely the idea that zoologists mostly get a tidbit when it comes to domesticated animals in their education.
With that, allow me to educate you. The Chihuahua was not actually found until the 1850’s and originally thought to be a direct decedent to the Chinese crested. That has since been proven inaccurate. However, just would like to point out that in the 1850’s it was more than likely that the dog breed itself is much older than 158 years old and considering we ALL know how far our scientific knowledge has come since then there was NO WAY that they would have known that this particular breed would have the consistent problems of seizures, hypoglycemia and hydrocephalus, just to name a few. However, should you wish to argue the point, then we could also use the Great Dane as a breed that ’shouldn’t have ever been breed’ because of their poor health conditions and short life expectancy. Or possibly the idea that a family shouldn’t breed just because there is a history diabetes, polycystic fibrosis or epilepsy (all diseases that COULD be passed on).
What you are doing is just antagonizing and it seems to me that is the reason you work with animals, because you don’t have the social graces that you should have been brought up with in order to at least have the common decency to know if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. But then again, if you didn’t like where you were living, then maybe you should relocate, because I for one believe that American’s were given the right to free speech for a reason…just use it properly and you will gain more respect than some degree. You can be as book smart as you want, but if you don’t have the common sense to look both way’s before crossing the street, it doesn’t do you a bit of good.
btw: My credentials don’t really matter, but I am an Ex Registered Nurse and have worked for over 30 years in Veterinarian Science.
I saw one of these bones for sale at Publix in the meat section. It’s actually a very large bone, nearly the size of a human femur bone. Wow, that’s a scary thought.
