6 Joy 11.08.07 at 5:58 am

Surreal! What kind of bird is that?!? Absoluting charming bird with the most surreal legs ever! Great wing feathers, that’s for sure.

7 bcteagirl 11.08.07 at 6:08 am

So cute! Is this where pipecleaners come from? :P

8 Dalaena 11.08.07 at 6:40 am

He’s all “Now DEES is laig bending my young sand-hopper!” :) So cuh-yoot!

9 Lone 11.08.07 at 6:46 am

You like these legs, eh? Yeah you’ll have a pair soon too, get you some girls with these things. Your mom, was love at first sight when she spied these babies.

10 Kar 11.08.07 at 6:57 am

Oh my.

That whole rocking horse leg condition appears to be hereditary.

11 quizkid 11.08.07 at 7:34 am

That is definitely the mom.

12 englishwoman 11.08.07 at 7:50 am

15 Hon Glad 11.08.07 at 8:55 am

D’you think they need oiling? eerk, eerk.

16 Subhangi 11.08.07 at 9:13 am

LOL! What bird is this?

17 birdorable 11.08.07 at 10:16 am

Too cute for sure. That’s a Black-winged Stilt.

18 SJ 11.08.07 at 11:15 am

Wow! Really unusual, love the colouring too.

Hope mom is gently with that needle like beak around the chicks floofy bottom!!

:)

19 Zee 11.08.07 at 11:20 am

I love the speckling action in teh bebeh chiclette’s downy feathers. Flufforama.

20 bethany 11.08.07 at 11:22 am

Actually its only leg to the joint, then its a foot and the bird is standing on its toes, knees dont bend backward, ankles do, and their knees are hidden by their feathers.

21 NYgirly 11.08.07 at 12:03 pm

bebeh boid:egg

MATCHINGKS!! ^^

22 Theresa 11.08.07 at 12:22 pm

Doncha just love stilty-legged shorebirds? I live near a place where Piping Plovers are protected. They run in and out of the surf, and they look like they should have a kind of “deedle-deedle-deedle” sound effect accompanying them.

23 StormCat 11.08.07 at 12:26 pm

Theresa, I thought I was the only one that thought those shorebirds should have sound effects!! I love to watch them run in and out, in and out of the water… I’m always amazed at how fast they run!!! *beep beep*

I love the bendy knees on these boids, but the red around the Mom’s eyes are freaking me out a little… I wouldn’t want to see those things glow at night!!!

But love the knees!!! Whoops, I mean ankles….

24 Theresa 11.08.07 at 12:26 pm

“Someday, son, you too will have OUTRAGGHEOUSS orange legs like these!”

25 Khadija 11.08.07 at 12:49 pm

this mum is like bending over backwards for her kidz

According to these folks:

http://www.amonline.net.au/factsheets/stilt.htm

Mom and Dad look similar, and both incubate eggs and care for the young. So it really could be Dad. Or Mom. Or Dad. Or….

28 Theresa 11.08.07 at 1:24 pm

BTW, please don’t look at that page that Pheas posted, because it has a picture of a limpet in the upper right corner. And you know the randiest of the gastropods is the limpet. This hot-blooded little beast with its tent-like shell is always on the job. Its extra-marital activities are something startling. Frankly I don’t know how the female limpet finds the time to adhere to the rock-face.

29 DKN 11.08.07 at 1:25 pm

teh eggs and teh bebeh are teh matchingks!

*SPLODE*

30 DKN 11.08.07 at 1:28 pm

Theresa you should get a job underwriting for Nature or something.

31 Theo 11.08.07 at 1:32 pm

LOL, Theresa… [dons Bio-major specs] …except that those are sea-urchin skeletons.

32 Yitzysmommie 11.08.07 at 2:07 pm

Very cool pic. I understand that those are ankes, but I prefer thinking of them as knees. Therefore, I shall resume thinking of them as knees.
Harumphf. That is all.

33 AliceTanzer 11.08.07 at 2:14 pm

That bird is even sillier looking when it stands up o_O

34 hey-h 11.08.07 at 2:18 pm

Yes, forget what you learned about only mama birds taking care of the babies – lots of birds split those responsibilities! Think of the daddy penguins in March of the Penguins with the eggs on their feet.

For a different link:
http://www.bird-stamps.org/species/54001.htm
Lookit all the countries that have put this bird on their stamps!! Wise, wise countries, I say.

35 ceejoe 11.08.07 at 2:24 pm

omg, at first glance I did not even notice the matchingks babeh and eggs!
I was too caught up with teh red tights…

36 jen 11.08.07 at 2:32 pm

i want to put the babeh birdeh in my mouf.

not to eat or anything, just to keep safe and feel its floofiness.

37 Pheas 11.08.07 at 2:41 pm

Now, Theresa, we both know this site is PG-13!

If Mom and Dad ever need some grown-up alone time, I would be happy to chickeh-sit.

38 debg 11.08.07 at 2:51 pm

I’m glad to hear those are ankles, because there’s a sci fi flick where all the aliens masquerading as humans turn out to have knees that bend backwards. SCARY.

39 ittybittykittycommittee 11.08.07 at 2:58 pm

are those legs or flexi-straws?

40 RJ 11.08.07 at 2:58 pm

Ack! Who substituted my pink bend-y straws for her/his legs!?!?

41 luvinmalssomuch 11.08.07 at 3:10 pm

RJ-Ed

42 Kara 11.08.07 at 3:14 pm

His legs are the same colour as his eyes!

43 luvinmalssomuch 11.08.07 at 3:14 pm

Bendolicious.

44 luvinmalssomuch 11.08.07 at 3:14 pm

Bendolicious.

45 Fegli 11.08.07 at 3:20 pm

Ridiculous! But of course, that’s why I come to this site.

On another note, Homer Simpson comes to mind… “He’s drinking the water!!!”

46 berthaslave 11.08.07 at 3:36 pm

:: raps chalkboard with stick ::

People, the legs are fascinatin’ (as all pretty legs are), but have we forgotten what month it is? It’s NOSEVEMBER for gosh sake! Do not ignore the schnozzola!!

47 pyrit 11.08.07 at 3:45 pm

Those legs and that beak, came outta that egg? Oh it’s like one of those hydraulically compressed washcloths or toys where you add a drop of water and it magically expands…except much, much better, of course. Are we sure it’s not made by those “Boing-Boing” guys? And, lastly, what a great “Nose-vember” pic! I think it is a Pinocchio bird.

48 pyrit 11.08.07 at 3:47 pm

berthaslave – Great minds think alike!

49 itsmemom 11.08.07 at 3:47 pm

I see the reason for the beakage; it keeps them from falling face down…boink!

50 bats :[ 11.08.07 at 3:47 pm

All those wonderful angles and lines…the beak, the legs, the wing tips! And the leetle round eggs!

51 blair 11.08.07 at 3:48 pm

beau’iful plumage…

(sorry)

52 j 11.08.07 at 3:50 pm

lol blair.

um… i’m gonna need a COXCU on that bebeh. stat!

53 Steph 11.08.07 at 4:00 pm

I am more impressed by that crazy BEAK action!

54 liz 11.08.07 at 4:04 pm

lovely.
such delicate lil birds.
baby want the others to come out and play.

55 maymee 11.08.07 at 4:10 pm

Wow, this goes beyond cute into gorgeous territory!

56 Courtney 11.08.07 at 4:25 pm

Her legs are SO PINK!

57 Kiragirl 11.08.07 at 4:33 pm

Theresa,
you hit it on the “nose” with “deedle, deedle, deedle” EXACTLY
sandpipers.

58 Kiragirl 11.08.07 at 4:45 pm

yes, need COXCU

59 zeldapie 11.08.07 at 5:15 pm

I lurve the red tights!
Meg, we need an COXCO on the little bird’s legs!

60 AldenM1 11.08.07 at 6:06 pm

It reminds me of those trendy wine racks where you put a bottle of wine in a slanted piece of wood and it “hovers” “magically” there. The bird’s doing the same sort of gravity-defying hovering. Plus, so many matchinks!

61 binks 11.08.07 at 6:42 pm

Hey, shouldn’t this be tagged with a Rule 7? :)

62 Wendy Tarpley 11.08.07 at 7:48 pm

If someone else can confirm Rule #23 for me, I think this may be a Coveted Cuteness Trifecta. You’ve got your #12 and your #7!

63 joools 11.08.07 at 7:53 pm

Wendy, I second the motion!

64 Mary (the first) 11.08.07 at 7:59 pm

So, you guys who instantly said “it’s a black winged stilt”, curious how do you know? Are you birdwatchers or is there some way to easily find these things? (sometimes I see birds in my back yard and don’t know what they are. Is there a resource?) And I was surprised how big these are, it said 35 cm which is over a foot long. He/she looks tiny in the photo but is not tiny at all.
Did I mention it’s a wonderful photo and hurray for more like this!?

65 meg 11.08.07 at 8:30 pm

aww!!! baybee still looks like an egg!

66 Marie 11.08.07 at 11:34 pm

I can’t say this long enough: “Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww…”

67 Chastity 11.09.07 at 1:14 am

Now THAT is Mommy talent !!!

68 equus 11.09.07 at 3:20 am

I think this definitely merits an “Unusual Animals” tag.

69 Maureen 11.09.07 at 2:33 pm

Elevator legs. Better to see her babies.

70 MMc 11.13.07 at 6:35 pm
