Late to this party, but I wonder if all of you who are outraged about Munchkins are familiar with them at all, or if you've only seen pictures of them online. My Munchie is healthy, happy and quite the little hoppy guy — and if you research the breed, as I did before adopting him, you'll find that their genetic differences are naturally occurring.

FWIW, the other kitty is probably a non-standard Munchkin.

Yeah, I want to buy them a broom.

I think the debate is the fact that this isn't the forum for that kind of discussion. Cute videos go in, smiles go out. The website didn't breed the kitten and has no real political control over animal rights so complain in the place where it will do good.

An why is everyone yelling about it being a re-run. Did it ruin your day that much? Or was that just to prove you are a know it all with mad memory skills?

Okay, well, I'm a little late on this one, and the second time 'round, but I'll try anyway. As a veterinary professional, I can say that all heritable mutations are naturally-occurring, and since Munchkinism is heritable, it is naturally-occurring. However, people do breed specially for it. And all kittens in a litter of kittens bred specifically for munchkinism will not be munchkins; like all genes, it is not always expressed in all offspring. That's why you look different than your brother or sister. It is theorized that munchkin cats will have different health problems than most other cats, but so do various breeds of dogs that have been established for many, many years (ie, dachshunds with intervertebral disc disease and shar pei with chronic yeast infections), but we don't consider the breeds of dogs to be the victims of cruel breeding practices; just descendents of different breeding practices that yielded wildly interesting and often useful results. Breeding for traits is not necessarily cruel, nor have I personally seen any evidence that breeding for short-leggedness in cats is cruel. It's different and novel, and creates a high demand for cats with a different look. That's about all.

Oh yay, I'm glad this was posted again because it's the cutest kitten in existence :D
Maybe we should reiterate Susie's post every once and a while to inform people before they assume-and-post ^_^

I've said it before and I'll say it again:
The kittens are so cute! ^_^ *hugs* Both kitties - I am a sucker for that van pattern. *snorgles armful of van cat*
And, to give my two cents on genetic mutations and echo what was already said...
What's wrong with it? I've got some, but I'm not sad or angry at my parents for them. Sure, I can't eat certain foods or drive a car or navigate stairs that well, but it's not like I'm suffering, and it's not going to stop me from trying to have a kid some day.
Also, that kitty looks happy as a clam, with his sibling (I suspect there's more off-camera) and human servant who loves him enough to show him to the world. I thank that person for it, whoever they are. They have brought a smile to this mutant's face. ^_^

Most mutations are natural to begin with. That doesn't mean that they're good, or that they aren't subsequently pursued by breeders. The fact is that we CAN'T TELL from this video whether this mutation was natural (the munchkin is the odd one out) or bred on purpose (the non-munchkin is the disappointment). We can debate all day whether deliberate breeding is good or bad, but it really has nothing to do with this particular cat.

Who is pretty darn cute, I must say.
