You’ve heard of Chiclets gums, but this is for reals.
Try not to chew on this guy, though. You wouldn’t like bird flavor anyways.
Lori W., he’d be kinda cronchey anyways.

Ahhh, so ugly yet cute.
help feed me sometinkgs !!!!!!!!!
OMgee, it looks like playdoh. Scary cute.
and Peeples…try not to notice how eggsactly EGG sized that bebeh is. Glad I’m a vegetabletarian. Sorry for the mental image – at least I won’t be the only one.
O-M-G! He’s so tiny! Is this a bebeh chicken chick, or an owlet, or someting? Just curious.
But, yeah, he’s yelling bigtime for foo!
Ergh, sorry, but baby birds are not cute to me. They’re yucky.
So small!
Eeeek – Wildlife rehab moment flashback. That little one is going to be so tough to raise. They are amazing – but sad to me.
what kind of bird is it? does anyone know? it’s so TINY
not sure if this is more sad than cute. Seems like that should be warmed by a heater or a mom.
Look at his wittle feets!!
Ew. Baby birds are not cute. And this is sad, because why is he crying in some human’s palm instead of nestled with mom?
Teeniest of birds… ever. Get the beehbeh a blankie!
Tastes like chicken!
Teeny Mc Teenerstens, imagine what the pack of Pampers would look like!
(Hope the babe was gently raised and cared for, I love the birdies! )
http://www.theworldaround.us
I love his wittle beak and his wittle feetz!
This is a pic sorely in need of both a background story AND follow-up. We demand to know what happens to baby birdie.
I’m sure he wouldn’t be in someone’s hands unless he was abandoned… I’m glad he’s got someone to look after him! He’s very cute, I think
I agree…without context, this is potentially kind of traumatic. But if it’s all happy, then it’s ONE OF THE FREAKING CUTEST THINGS EVER!!! It’s soooooooooo tiny!
eeeeek…first not cute thing i have ever seen on this site
So cute! But I want to know the story behind this picture! Tell me the little bit is okay!
yeah, i’d like to know the backstory too.
How heartbreakingly sweet/sad!
Seeing that tiny birdlet in those hands makes me sad and happy at the same time. I’m in awe and having my heartstrings tugged at the fragility of that little creature…and my heart warmed seeing it protected in those strong hands.
It puts stuff into perspective, yo.
Hooray for wildlife rehabbers and everyone else who offers helping hands to those creatures who desperately need someone to help them out. <3
I dont believe this little tacker will make it. I wish I knew either way.
if someone took it from a nest for a photo then it would have human smell on it and mum/dad would reject it.
poor thing. I hope he made it…
Looks like a house finch . . . tho its hard to tell at that age!
And, as many on this site have mentioned, the parents will NOT reject the baby once it has been handled. I do behavioral research on zebra finches, and have to handle the chicks all the time. The ‘rents don’t care.
Kinda look like snot at that age. But cute snot!
He looks hun-gee. Feed!
Lil,
The “scent of humans” thing is an urban legend–birds can’t really smell a whole lot of anything:
http://www.snopes.com/critters/wild/babybird.asp
Poor little dood. I hope he turns out okay.
Cutest f*cking thing I’ve ever seen.
…so …tiny
BTW, not a finch. They’re born with black beaks that change color when they gets fully growed up.
It’s ‘cute’ because it’s small but damn, baby birds are so ugly. The translucent skin and eyes get to me…
We find lots of babeh boids on our lawn in the spring, and it’s never good news…
When they’re older, they may be luckier, but I fear for this little one’s fate. Yes, I agree it’s cute, so small and fragile, but to me it’s mostly just really sad…
So, Meg, how about the “Cute But Sad” category for this one?
[gasp!] Is it alive?! I hope the tiny critter doesn’t die…it’s so pitifully small. That’s smaller than birth-size, so it doesn’t look good. BACKSTORY – PLEASE!
Ok, this is first CO critter that has given me the creeps. I could deal with Snalio and the insects, but this guy, scary! I do hope he turns out ok, though!
Poor leetle teensy birdie.
Jo, I love your straightforward, pragmatic and informative remarks that are followed by the equally straightforward observation that it looks like snot. All of what you say is true. Like it or not, things like this are part of the big picture and I think we are blessed to be able to see them.
he is, too cute! (even if on a mother, or parrot person, could love him) He looks like maybe a parakeet or other small parrot chick. Maybe about to be handfed, since his crop isn’t full. He looks pretty healthy to me. If he wa a parakeet chick, he started out only about 2/3 that size.
Was there a backstory to this photo sent in? I am hoping that this a wildlife re-habber. . .
He’s king of the eye capsules.
Aren’t we going to ever know if he became an adult boidie? Has anybody found out “the rest of the story”?
Go away, nuffs. This is most definitely cute.
hurrry somebody get this guy some worms. toot sweet please.
awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
lewk at his lil donald duck feets!
and dramatic purple-y/gun metal smoke eye shadow ^^
Yeah, this makes me really, really, really sad. It just seems pretty unlikely that this guy is still alive, so it looks like torture to me.
Sad.
Teeny, teeny vulnerable micro-bebeh, I hope you get lotsa worms and grow up big and strong.
The very definition of ugly-cute.
He is very tiny and adorable, but it is hard to revel in his cuteness if I have the belief that the little guy probably died soon after this picture was taken. I’d love a backstory to let me know if the little guy is OK!
I don’t understand why this picture suggest torture or anything remotely as horrible. Yes, it *might* be that some fiend handled a chick inappropriately, withheld food, etc. until it died, stopping only to take this picture. Then again, it *might* be that someone was around with a camera when the chick hatched, took the picture, then returned the chick to safety. It also *might* be that the chick was orphaned, is being rehabbed, was held for 5 seconds to take this picture, then returned to safety.
I know they say a picture is worth a thousand words, but I don’t see why one should assume that those words constitute some horrible story. Others have pointed this out over and over again, yet some people feel compelled to believe that the worst has happened or is about to happen and someone’s going to diiiieeeeeeeeee. Oy.
okay, we raised a clutch of 4 parakeet chicks. Two started a little bigger than this, one this size and one smaller. We hand fed them. Yes, they all survived and went to other homes. In fact one of our cats “adopted” them and would climb into their box, after which they would all snuggle into her tummy fur. So even if this chick’s parents aren’t around, it still has a good chance of survival, if its people care to take on that role. It’s not sick, that’s what parrot chicks look like. They’re “cavity nesters”, so don’t need to be covered with feathers or down from early on.
emmm……i really really dont like this photo it looks like a bird that didnt get to hatch, is it alive????!!
i would tewtelly regurgitate a worm for this little guy. cute, cute, and gonna be so loverly some day.
cute,
though maybe there REALLY needs to be a link to the original blog/photographer so we can avoid the “OMG! where’s the rest of the story!” panic…
My first response was that it was a domesticated bird borrowed from it’s parents for a moment to have it’s picture taken.
I wish people would read other comments before freaking out, lol.
For those of you worrying that it’s too small to have hatched correctly, or that it’s dead, or that it probably didn’t survive…that really is your mamillian brain kicking in. If this was a mammal of some sort, yes, this would look really bad for it…
But this is how many small birds look when they hatch, as numerous people have said. They look like boogers, and are tiny.
Also, you can tell when a baby bird is dead or in big trouble health-wise. This does not look like it. As someone who has raised birds numerous times, he looks fine.
My educated guess is that the birdy is perfectly fine and is in the proccess of being hand-raised (whether wild or pet bird)
So! Try to find some comfort in that, and enjoy it as an awe-inspiring (if unnerving) pic.
As one of the OMG!-ers, let me try to explain the WTF factor for the rest of you.
This is not a normal sized chick. It’s extremely tiny, which, to most of us, looks like it’s premature. It’s lying down, which leads to the alive/dead question. It’s not in a typical environment, such as a nest or bunting, etc., which makes us wonder (once again) if it is alive/dead.
As for the backstory request…see above. As it’s not a “normal” chick, we’d like to know what happened to it. Why? Because we care about the welfare of animals.
Maybe the rest of you work in a bird rescue center and that makes you an expert on different types of bird babies. The rest of us aren’t, so bear with us, as we’re not perfekt.
Thanks for your understanding of our concern.
Ahh yes. The “FOOD! FOOD! FOOD!” screech of the tiny bird.
Patience is a virtue and those folks that have the patience to hand raise birdlets, puplets and all sorts of little critters are virtuous heroes in my book. There is no abuse here, that is what baby birds look like. For goodness sake, get a grip, as if someone would purposely post an abusive photo here.
Seriously, nuffs, thousands of folks hand-raise baby birds, and ‘keets of many varieties are removed from the nest at this size to be hand-fed. Sheesh, know your facts before freaking out! I lof him and his wee feets.
TexIrishRose put it way better than me. I wasn’t suggesting that a person was torturing the bird, I was saying it looked like the bird was going through a torturous time. I have seen many, many baby birds not make it, so seeing this tiny guy just made me sad. I think it’s okay for everyone to express their opinions, so me feeling this way and writing it on here is not attacking anyone, I was just saying how it made me feel. ‘kay?
You know, it could just be a wee burdie that’s fallen out of the nest and is just about to be put back into it. It might not have a sad story at all.
Somebirdys all naykee!
He is the most naykees birdy I’ve ever seen!
Is it dead?
These pictures of neonates in people’s hands are really bothering me. Is C.O. encouraging people to raid nests of small animals and snap photos of the struggling babies? This is not a hen’s chick. The yellow light looks to be indoor lighting, perhaps an incubator light. But there is no description of the bird getting back to its nest or if the thing died after this.
I wish C.O. would stop publishing photos of unweaned creatures taken from their mothers.
(nurslings clinging to mama is cute – crying and being cold is pathetic and sad.)
I want to touch it, teehee. Is so preshy, begging for foods and alls.
Where’s that eench worm when you needs heem?
Did something happen to Mom? My cat, Miss Mekare Chai-anne, came to live with me BEFORE she was even 24 hours old. Her mother got killed right after giving birth. It was rough, raising a newborn kitten, but Her Royal Highness survived. I hope your little one makes it. Have you talked with one of those highly educated bird people? Please do, and Good Luck!
I believe that baby bird needs a sweater to help it stay warm. It would only take about 30 seconds to make. I’d be happy to volunteer.
Also, don’t assume the CO babies have all been taken from their mothers for a photo op. When I was in wildlife rescue, we had a fair number of babies that needed hand raising due to their mamas dying or some other catastrophe. People didn’t purposely separate the mamas and babies.
wow the buggers a teeny-tiny little fella,
But come on post the source to keep these poor peeps from freaking out with their guessing about the pics real origins, cause they seem to really want to know
Aww soo tiny. I myself have a clutch of 3 zebra finches that just recently hatched in the past 4 days.
This goes to those that obviously know squat about birds….Yes people a baby bird can be that small. Do you guys think a baby bird would be nearly full grown in size when it comes out of the egg? The smaller the bird the smaller the babies will be. It is alright to handle the baby bird, mama and papa aren’t gonna kill it after. It is alright to take a picture of the wee ones if you want, the camera won’t steal it’s soul. Just because it is in someones hand doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing, stop being so over imaginative and dramatic about the “background” of the pic and just enjoy something that you may or may not have ever seen before.
I for 1 have been enjoying this website for quite a long time and as for all you critics who could even suggest that CO whould post a pic or vid of something or someone purposefully harming an animal oviously hasn’t been around this web site for long. I think Meg does an excellent job of deciding what to post and what not to post. I mean, she obviously loves anything cute and whouldn’t promote any kind of cruely.
this is more disturbing than cute.
Has anyone ever mentioned that your captions can be rather insensitive? I thought this was an animal lovers site…
awwww,eeeew,awwww! eew.
Poor little dude. Brings back sad memories of apartment sitting for a friend and every morning finding a little baby bird on the balcony that had fallen from its nest.Sniffle.
He reminds me of a bebe mouse or panda. So fragile and helpless. Must follow up though. THE PEOPLE DEMAND UPDATES.
only 3 letters can describe… omg
Yikes…I was just trying to reassure people, so they didn’t have to freak out so much. I wasn’t picking on anybody.
And as for her posting updates or backstory, she rarely does. She most of the time doesn’t get such a luxury from the people who send in pics and stuff. You can’t really ‘demand’ such a thing, because that’s entirely her perogative, and something that she doesn’t do often.
I *really* do think that this pic is totally innocent and everyone can go back to enjoying it for what it is: an awesome view of tiny life in strong protective hands.
Oh, peoples need to calm down! It just looks like a little parakeet chickie. I don’t think there’s any reason to assume there’s anything traumatic going on here, just a quick photo op of the teeny sausage before he’s plopped back with mum. I do agree that baby birds can have a bit of an…overcooked alien look to them, but they somehow still manage to elicit “squees” from me, so I count them as cute.
I’ve taken care of birds before. The “Human touch is bad” rumor is complete rubbish. This baby is probably being put back in a nest after falling out. Or maybe it belongs to their pets? People always assume the worst, which confuses me, because it isn’t the worst 90% of the time.
Oh, and that is not a bird in pain. That is a baby screeching for food- which they do twenty-four-seven.
Though the “Lovebirds hate more then they love” rumor is true. That bird scared me.
I’m vey happy to hear that rejection by mama because a human handled bubs is a myth! I was always told that as a kid- probably so I wouldnt mess with any nest. I shall now have to resist the urge to seek out nesters and cuddle them!
awww…what a cute birdy! he’s all beak and feet and “moooooommmmmmm….I’m hungreeeee”
nuffs…can’t live with ‘em, can’t hack ‘em up into tiny pieces and hide ‘em in the back of your car…
Thank you, bird people, for reassuring OMG-ers like me. If several peeps say from experience that it looks like a healthy parakeet chick, then the matter is now closed as far as I’m concerned. I’m just not used to seeing baby “chicks” that don’t come from chickens. And so this guy seemed *impossibly* small, as in it’s impossible he’s alive.
…But he IS, AND has little feetsies and beaksies and purple eyeshadow capsules and is screeching for food! Now I’m OMG-ing in the usual, good way.
You know what he reminds me of, is one of those TINY little rubber toys that come in bins of 10 million and cost 5 cents each or maybe some out of one of those cheesy toy dispenser things where you pay 50 cents for something that should cost 5. Can’t be more precise than that, and I don’t remember the last time I’ve seen something like that, but that’s what jumped to mind.
Thanks, Emmerly. Well put.
Looks like a pencil topper.
This is either a baby finch or canary. I have raised both and I assure you he looks fine. His belly is nice and pink, yes it is transparent but that goes away as they mature. They ALL look like this when hatched (again finch or canary) so nothing is obviously wrong with this one. I find that these birds are easier to raise than parakeets or cockatiels. They are tiny (about the size of your pinky nail) but as you can see from the gaping mouth they are ready to eat from day one. Typically you feed them one drop at a time until their crop fills. I use toothpicks to start them out (scooping a little at a time, feeding every hour on the hour) and later they graduate to eyedroppers. I have raised them for years and like any pet bird, if you start hand feeding them before their eyes open, they make much better pets. Finches and canaries typically won’t care if you touch their babies but if something is wrong with them (sickness, etc.), they will kick them out of the nest. Sad but true. But this one looks like a normal healthy baby. Hope this helps guys!
I didn’t even read the rollover, but felt compelled to after some nuffer mentioned it, and am now cackling to the point of scaring my roommate over “Crunchy Chiclet”.
OMG! I hope no one tries to snorgle him – he’ll go straight in!
Subhangi:
Snort! No, really!!!
*All* baby birds look like naked embryos when they first hatch out. And compare the size of a baby chick to an adult chicken… now think of something like a parakeet or a chickadee, and imagine how small their eggs (and therefore their chicks) are. And, last but not least, all baby birdies seem to have their beaks open, screeching to be fed, 24/7 until they grow up.
Yay!! If one OMGer was successfully reassured, then my job here is done!
And…seriously, JLWS…a pencil topper.
I almost literally laughed myself to death, after inhaling/spewing much coffee.
Can you just imagine a baby hummingbird? Or even a baby wormmy. That’s it, this chicklet needs a baby wormmy. A little snack before bed time.
YES JLWS, pencil topper, that is the sort of thing I was looking for! LOL!!!
eeeeeehehehe not only crunchy but an inhalant!
Baby hummingbird. O. M. G. That would be microscopic. …Actually I just did a google image search and found one that fit on a penny!!
Hi, I am a different Anne, and regarding the comment Jo made about snot: may I point out she did say CUTE snot!!!
It’s a peep of Pipsqueek proportions ; )
