I love the baby’s use of Mom’s ear as a stepping stone while trying to climb over her.
Also, mother’s ever-so-graceful descent back into her den is glorious (back feet out behind her, sliding down inside). It’s the only way about it!
I love seeing such a large, powerful animal be so gentle and calm around her young.
Its all about 2:37, when the baby polar bear is on momma’s neck, using her ear for leverage, lol.

See I stopped watching polar bears cause they just make me so say anymore. Before my life is over they will be extinct in the wild thru no fault of their own or nature’s way. Just stupid stupid humans. So they make me sad. Then I watch the clip that tblue suggested and that makes me well up with happy tears. Life as it should be. That is just such a sweet great story. Wish they took pics all week!

There is footage of a polar bear struggling to hunt because of prematurely thinned ice (also narrated by Sir David) which is really hard to watch but I’m not sure if it’s from this series. I’m glad it wasn’t part of this sequence. Yes, I too am saddend by their species plight which I am reminded of whenever I see them on TV.
On a happier note I told Sir David at a book signing a few years ago(his autobiography) that “It was an honour to be part of a generation that grew up with his work”

If you want to buy the Planet Earth series on DVD & you want to enjoy the voice of the fabu Sir Attenborough, be VERY careful which one you buy! Some of them feature narration by Sigourney Weaver rather than the fabulous voice of Sir David. Just a heads-up.
Just commenting on MrsSteel – the Discovery Store and Amazon (who you should be boycotting anyway, check HSUS for more info) have the American, shorter, S. Weaver version. Now, the guy in the Discovery Store told me you can only get the Attenbourough version thru the BBC channel. I don’t know how true that is, but it is a start!

LadyMeerkar, you are correct, this episode, titled “Ice Worlds” shows an adult polar bear swimming for many miles looking for food. When he finally finds an ice raft with walruses he tries to attack, but doesn’t have enough energy left to succeed. So he digs a hole in the snow, crawls into it and dies. If any of you people have a soft heart be warned. Do NOT watch this episode, that scene will haunt you the rest of your life. I just wish someone warned me before I saw it. I’m tearing up again…..

Actually there are several different sides to the global warming issue. Not saying it isn’t an issue just saying there is alot more to it than you see in the “Main Street Media”. You may want to see what is written about the heating up of the entire solar system and sun cycles it is very fascinating.

Aaaawwww! Sniffle. What lovely music as well. The only voice to compare with Sir David’s for mellifluosity is the late Sir Richard Burton (a Welshman), and I have lots of tapes of him reading poetry, especially Dylan Thomas.
Planet Earth has got to be one of the most amazing things i have ever seen come out of that box we call a TV. If anyone hasn’t seen it you should!!
OMG! It’s Carrie: That’s because Sir D has respect for wildlife, allowing it to be at ease with him before going any closer, speaking in hushed tones, and always mindful that it’s WILD. That and his amazing life story, is why I have the outmost respect for the man
Sue, I guess the good thing about seeing such footage is that it has affected you and it makes you want to do something about it, doesn’t it? In that sense, anyone who doubts why we need to do something should watch it.
Left a light/appliance on? Think of the polar bears, every bit of energy you save means a little bit less global warming. It all adds up.
