2 fatcat 09.10.07 at 1:51 pm

Almost bleen! And I *love* that man-I’ve grown up listening to his british accent and watching the shows on TV

3 hey-h 09.10.07 at 1:56 pm

I just watched that with my jaw hanging open. Twin polar bear babies. Um. Wow.

4 Kate 09.10.07 at 1:59 pm

Hurrah! Sir David is a national – and international – treasure :D

5 luvinmalssomuch 09.10.07 at 2:04 pm

6 Trish 09.10.07 at 2:06 pm

Once again, completely floored by the camera work in this series. How lucky was this cameraman??

7 keurejian 09.10.07 at 2:13 pm

11 e-beth 09.10.07 at 2:36 pm

They’ve BEAN in their den awl wintah…

Um, where’s the polar bear potty? Is that why they need to “clean their fur?” Pew, pew!

12 Leah B. 09.10.07 at 2:45 pm

Yes he is wonderful that man is not afraid of much. Sir David is always calming to listen to and watch on tv.

13 OMG! It's Carrie 09.10.07 at 2:45 pm

wow, i shouldn’t have listened at work, now i’m all sleepy!!! I’ve been watching his series on mammals every day, when it’s time to go to bed. And it’s sooooooo relaxing.

19 maymee 09.10.07 at 2:50 pm

I love Sir David but he really shouldn’t have that island with all the dinosaurs.
Far too dangerous!

20 JazzKate 09.10.07 at 2:52 pm

I love the baby’s use of Mom’s ear as a stepping stone while trying to climb over her.

Also, mother’s ever-so-graceful descent back into her den is glorious (back feet out behind her, sliding down inside). It’s the only way about it!

I love seeing such a large, powerful animal be so gentle and calm around her young.

21 darkshines 09.10.07 at 2:54 pm

Its all about 2:37, when the baby polar bear is on momma’s neck, using her ear for leverage, lol.

22 Christina 09.10.07 at 3:06 pm

Aww, polar bears. That reminded me of the report that they might die off. :/

And maymee – that’s his brother, Sir Richard Attenborough, who also has a soft, mellow voice. :)

23 tanguera 09.10.07 at 3:06 pm

Anybody else notice the PERFECTLY executed baby bear “ehn” toward the end?

24 haschen 09.10.07 at 3:10 pm

“Sir David … really shouldn’t have that island with all the dinosaurs.”

that’s his brother richard.

oh man… i am so in love with david’s voice- i hope he’s immortal!

my fave is his series on birds, most especially bower birds.

25 jenny 09.10.07 at 3:26 pm

ahhh… they’re so tiny their feet don’t even make marks in the snow!

26 Karl 09.10.07 at 3:35 pm

Has anyone actually seen the series?? I am so surprised no one mentioned how sad it is that these creatures are dying because of what we are doing to the environment :-(

27 DarrylsMama 09.10.07 at 3:41 pm

More commercials. Can we keep the ads on the side and not embedded in teh cute?

28 Wbirdie 09.10.07 at 3:42 pm

Awwwwww:)

I love Sir David Attenborough.

Know what?
Polar Bear Butt!:D

29 Annie 09.10.07 at 4:04 pm

I am stuned and those pictures of the cubs on the steep sloops. They make you realize how truely lucky Knute is.
And Sir David’s voice IS THE AWESOME!

30 Jane Smith 09.10.07 at 4:07 pm

I think that should be “budder.”

31 HeidStar 09.10.07 at 4:14 pm

Wouldn’t it be great if Sir David narrated the soundtrack of your daily life? “…after (too few)hours of confinement under the duvet she stumbles to the shower, perhaps to wash her hair, perhaps for sheer joy…”

Oh, and those leetle bear cubs traversing across the steep snow absolutely slayed me!

32 Theresa 09.10.07 at 4:15 pm

What he does that is 2 awsum is one minute he’s in Costa Rica, the next in New Zealand! Sir David knows all the wormholes!!

33 ceejoe 09.10.07 at 4:28 pm

I am jest ded from the Qte babeh bears!
I hope they make it…

34 BlueCalico 09.10.07 at 4:45 pm

OMG, what a good mamma and those bebehs are darling! Love the tocks shots.

35 bugmom 09.10.07 at 4:58 pm

‘TOCKS and ‘tocks and ‘tocks and pads and bebehs and pads and ‘TOCKS!!!!! I just squeed all over myself! LOL!

But seriously, I need to know if mommy eats and babies get her sense of urgency instead of just her beautiful looks, and where the heck is daddy?!?!?!? Is football on somewhere?!?!?

36 lola 09.10.07 at 5:10 pm

bugmom – too funny. that’s what i was just thinking – sideways stepping baby bear TOCKS!

37 anner 09.10.07 at 5:45 pm

[Click the Amazon link *under* the video... - Ed.]

42 tblue 09.10.07 at 7:11 pm

I have already sent in this link, but in case you don’t post it, I still want to share it. It is a slide show of a huge polar bear frolicking with a dog up in Canada. It’s incredibly cute and sweet:

43 kayte 09.10.07 at 7:11 pm

I love David Attenborough, but those bears are soooooo anerable, I could have listen to Fran Drescher narrate that!

44 maymee 09.10.07 at 7:15 pm

Ok, so it’s Richard and not David with the dinosaur island. You’re missing the point – having dinos wandering around is NOT good, people.

Those Attenborough boys are Trouble.

49 anonymouse 09.10.07 at 8:45 pm

Thanks for posting this video up, Cute overload. It really draws attention to the plight of global warming. Those glaciers might not even be there by the end of my life. (I’m 15)

50 Alexis 09.10.07 at 8:51 pm

I cry when I see polar bears now, just thinking about how we have put them in danger. Gorgeous animals.

51 Theo 09.10.07 at 9:01 pm

Mary1 — usually I clean up dups when I see them… this time I think I’ll leave it, tho.
;)

60 mlle_x 09.10.07 at 10:04 pm

I can’t WAIT for Stephen Colbert to see this.

“Look at his eyes they look like tiny buttons AWWWWWWWW!!!!” Heeee!

61 violetgreen 09.10.07 at 10:06 pm

Sir David is my hero.
Da bearz are so sweeet.
Body-surfing nekkid down a snow bank would be a great hot-flash cure.

62 Barbara 09.10.07 at 10:39 pm

I love these guy so much. My heart breaks that they will be extinct due to our species.

63 DKN 09.10.07 at 10:53 pm

Everything sounds cooler when it’s coming from a Brit. Especially that Brit.

64 marmar 09.10.07 at 11:24 pm

Those baby bear ‘tocks crawling over mom are THE best.

65 angie 09.10.07 at 11:52 pm

so cute! his voice reminds me of pooh. the one i saw was narrated by sigourney weaver.

66 mel 09.10.07 at 11:53 pm

everytime I see these on animal planet or discovery I just cry. the world is so beautiful. and the animals, small and large are just so amazing. it is the greatest thing I’ve seen on tv.

67 Lauri 09.10.07 at 11:55 pm

Heeeee! Using mom’s ear as a step is also great!

68 Shannon 09.11.07 at 12:51 am

See I stopped watching polar bears cause they just make me so say anymore. Before my life is over they will be extinct in the wild thru no fault of their own or nature’s way. Just stupid stupid humans. So they make me sad. Then I watch the clip that tblue suggested and that makes me well up with happy tears. Life as it should be. That is just such a sweet great story. Wish they took pics all week!

69 Devon 09.11.07 at 1:00 am

Uh…how exactly have WE put those polar bears in danger as someone alluded to earlier??

You are supposing that ‘global warming’ is somehow a human construct whilst the reality is science is not agreed at all on that…that is FACT!

Perhaps try reading outside the mainstream media and talking heads, and you will learn!!

70 Yubi Shines 09.11.07 at 1:38 am

Eeee! Wild Knuts! Two of them!

And: Okay, guys, there’s enough global warning commentroversy in the YOUTUBE comment lists whenever a David Atten. video pops up, let’s not copy it over to here. If they want to look that up, Google is their very special friend. :0

Have you guys seen the King Penguin video on youtube (also a Sir David narration)? Talk about overload.

71 Theo 09.11.07 at 1:46 am

Devon: You know what “FUD” means, right? Wild unsupported statements in blog comments is one variety.

There are plenty of reasons that “mainstream media” is mainstream, and few of them are sinister.

72 Shannon 09.11.07 at 1:49 am

oh Devon, Devon, Devon. Turn off Fox News (oh and Glen Beck) and turn on YOUR brain. Then you will figure it out. I bet we didn’t really land on the moon either, huh?

OK – I promise. I will be good from here on out. Last grumpy thing I say tonite! Sorry.

73 jewels 09.11.07 at 1:54 am

Those bearlets look just like my tedda at home.

74 Alexis 09.11.07 at 2:06 am

After coming back and re-reading the comments I’m having a really hard time getting the polar bear Coke commercials out of my head.

(Theo, Shannon, it took a ton of my willpower not to respond to Devon. (I guess his/her comment was directed at me since I used the obviously inflammatory word “danger”.) Thanks for doing my work for me!)

;)

75 oaklandcat 09.11.07 at 2:20 am

Scientists have not conclusively proven the existence of nuffs. But I, for one, am convinced they exist.

76 metsakins 09.11.07 at 2:40 am

Oakie -LOL Lmao

Puddin’?

77 LadyMeerkat 09.11.07 at 2:50 am

There is footage of a polar bear struggling to hunt because of prematurely thinned ice (also narrated by Sir David) which is really hard to watch but I’m not sure if it’s from this series. I’m glad it wasn’t part of this sequence. Yes, I too am saddend by their species plight which I am reminded of whenever I see them on TV. :(
On a happier note I told Sir David at a book signing a few years ago(his autobiography) that “It was an honour to be part of a generation that grew up with his work” :)

78 Yubi Shines 09.11.07 at 2:57 am

LadyMeerkat: LUCKYYY!

79 lurkertype 09.11.07 at 3:23 am

“Those Attenborough boys are Trouble.”

LOL, maymee!

(Now I’m saying it in my head with an accent: Them Attenborough boys is trubble.)

80 turbofloof 09.11.07 at 4:21 am

“a poe-lah beah stihhhs…” I could listen to him all day – and smoosh polah bebehs on to my cheeks both at the same time, and do a floofy motorboat between both their fluffage. *ducks head; grins sheepishly*

89 liz 09.11.07 at 3:21 pm

this is beautiful and heartbreaking.
this weekend i heard that polarbears will be completely gone within 50 years if something can’t be done to save their habitat.
they are such amazing animals, it brings a tear…

90 MrsSteel 09.11.07 at 3:47 pm

IMPORTANT NOTE!!!
If you want to buy the Planet Earth series on DVD & you want to enjoy the voice of the fabu Sir Attenborough, be VERY careful which one you buy! Some of them feature narration by Sigourney Weaver rather than the fabulous voice of Sir David. Just a heads-up. :)

91 Shannon 09.11.07 at 4:44 pm

Just commenting on MrsSteel – the Discovery Store and Amazon (who you should be boycotting anyway, check HSUS for more info) have the American, shorter, S. Weaver version. Now, the guy in the Discovery Store told me you can only get the Attenbourough version thru the BBC channel. I don’t know how true that is, but it is a start!

92 waddle 09.11.07 at 5:02 pm

OH MY GOD – tblue, that is *amazing*. You see, THAT is why I love NPR.

93 RevWaldo 09.11.07 at 5:06 pm

“After months of confinement, the mother polar bear toboggans down the slope, perhaps to clean her fur, perhaps for sheer joy, or perhaps because her legs are still asleep. ‘OWOWOWOWO!’ winces the polar bear, ‘my paws feel like they’re soaking in ginger ale!’”

94 Sue in NoCal 09.11.07 at 5:18 pm

LadyMeerkar, you are correct, this episode, titled “Ice Worlds” shows an adult polar bear swimming for many miles looking for food. When he finally finds an ice raft with walruses he tries to attack, but doesn’t have enough energy left to succeed. So he digs a hole in the snow, crawls into it and dies. If any of you people have a soft heart be warned. Do NOT watch this episode, that scene will haunt you the rest of your life. I just wish someone warned me before I saw it. I’m tearing up again…..

95 Christine H 09.11.07 at 5:26 pm

Sue, that is so sad.

I hope that mom polar bear was sliding more because of sheer job than because of her legs being weak.

The baby polar bears are adorable!

96 Annie 09.11.07 at 6:01 pm

Nature can be a cruel place many times.

Actually there are several different sides to the global warming issue. Not saying it isn’t an issue just saying there is alot more to it than you see in the “Main Street Media”. You may want to see what is written about the heating up of the entire solar system and sun cycles it is very fascinating.

97 trinity67 09.11.07 at 6:30 pm

OH MY GOD THAT IS SO CUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUTE!!!

98 Laurie H 09.11.07 at 6:49 pm

RIP Polar Bears!

WE Will Miss You in 50 Years!!!!!!!!!!!

109 book_monstercats 09.13.07 at 8:59 am

Aaaawwww! Sniffle. What lovely music as well. The only voice to compare with Sir David’s for mellifluosity is the late Sir Richard Burton (a Welshman), and I have lots of tapes of him reading poetry, especially Dylan Thomas.

110 wynken 09.13.07 at 11:14 pm

Planet Earth has got to be one of the most amazing things i have ever seen come out of that box we call a TV. If anyone hasn’t seen it you should!!

111 LadyMeerkat 09.14.07 at 1:30 am

OMG! It’s Carrie: That’s because Sir D has respect for wildlife, allowing it to be at ease with him before going any closer, speaking in hushed tones, and always mindful that it’s WILD. That and his amazing life story, is why I have the outmost respect for the man :)

112 LadyMeerkat 09.14.07 at 1:35 am

Sue, I guess the good thing about seeing such footage is that it has affected you and it makes you want to do something about it, doesn’t it? In that sense, anyone who doubts why we need to do something should watch it.

Left a light/appliance on? Think of the polar bears, every bit of energy you save means a little bit less global warming. It all adds up.

113 donutbill 09.16.07 at 8:03 pm

My biology “perfesser” wanted to marry him based on his voice alone!
