Comments

  1. Squeeee! I think my head just exploded from cuteness! And he’s smiling already!

  2. Caitlin Youngquist says:

Oh! So small, so grey, so chubby! Belugas are the bestest whales evar!

  3. Tribegirl says:

This is one of the cutest posts ever. I love the snuggle action. Why don’t we have a separate category for aquatic cuteness? I would spend all day in that section.

  4. Shannon Johnson says:

What a cute beluga whale! I hope his mommy keeps him safe.

  5. metsakins says:

trying not to squeeeeee out loud at work foldy chub OMG!

  6. Tribegirl says:

LOL we do but whales are not fish.

  7. luvinmalssomuch says:

In the second pic they look like dolphins. Very chubby cutes.

  8. Allie and Jojo-s Mom says:

Wasn’t there a childrens song that went “Baby Beluga in the deep blue sea” or something to that extent.

    Baby Beluga!
    Baby Beluga!

  9. There was a time I wondered if I would ever be able to stop singing that song. [baby beluga] In spite of that I really like it and let’s face it, it is PERFECT for this little guy :D
    Deep sea cute!

  10. PS: The song is by Raffi.

  11. (Sings) And a little white whale on the go!

  12. I gotta tell ya – the song is about as cute as the whale.

    Sing your little song
    Sing for all your friends
    We love
    to
    hear
    you!

  13. Baby beluga in the deep blue sea,
Swim so wild and you swim so free.
Heaven above and the sea below,
And a little white whale on the go.

    Baby beluga, baby beluga,
Is the water warm? Is your mama home,
    With you so happy?

Way down yonder where the dolphins play,
Where you dive and splash all day,
Waves roll in and the waves roll out.
See the water squirting out of your spout.

    Baby beluga, oh, baby beluga,
Sing your little song, sing for all your friends.
    We like to hear you.

When it’s dark, you’re home and fed.
Curled up snug in your waterbed.
Moon is shining and the stars are out.
Good night, little whale, good night.

    Baby beluga, oh, baby beluga,
With tomorrow’s sun, another day’s begun.
    You’ll soon be waking.

Baby beluga in the deep blue sea,
Swim so wild and you swim so free.
Heaven above and the sea below,
And a little white whale on the go.
You’re just a little white whale on the go.

  14. Mary (the first) says:

OMG SOOOOOOOO cute! and it’s a good thing I don’t know the tune to his song or I would have an earworm for sure.

  15. He wooks cold *gently slides bewuga bebeh into leg warmer with flippers holes*

  16. how sweet this is.. just look at the cute smile on the baby face.
    Subhan Allah!

  17. I absaloutly ABHOR whales but this little guy is smiling and even I have to admit its pretty cute.

  18. Nice Christine says:

    Wha? You hate whales?
    ….Zuh?

  19. Oh, he’s smiling….so sweet!!

  20. OMG – Is that a nose roll I see in photo 3?! Or at least a cute roll where a nose would be on other critters.

  21. leiabelle says:

    It’s a n’awwwwhale! :D

Also, that Raffi song will be forever awesome.

  22. Good lord he needs to be stopped!

  23. God! So cute!! It looks like he’s smiling in that last picture.

  24. fish eye no miko says:

    It’s Momday, apparently! ^_^

  25. Brak_Silverbone says:

In that third photo, li’l baby beluga looks a lot like me underwater–pale and flabby with lots of side chub…!

Although let me assure all present that I would never ever go swimming nekkid. That would just be tooooo horrifying. ;)

  26. That baby is a GIRL! Her name is Bella!

  27. Mama and baby!
    Smiling whale!
    Side chub!
    Side chub!
    Side chub!

    so cute.

  28. Bella the baby beluga

    Thank you Miss Meg

  29. Cassandra says:

Oh, this is the first time I’m truly happy about an earworm! Nothing makes that song more glorious than adorable baby beluga pics! Monday is looking up :D

  30. awww. doncha love it, lil side chub!!

  31. acelightning says:

Belugas are so friendly-looking! I need to go to the aquarium soon (I haven’t been in decades), and try singing back to the belugas for a while…

  32. (voiceover)

“And remember, peeps, its Beluga CAV-iar, not Calf-iar”

  33. Mary (the first) says:

er . I just read some of the info. on the Shedd aquarium website. That’s not Bella. Bella was born last year sometime to a different mother. This one doesn’t have its gender known yet. just fyi .

  34. AWWWWW, go little fella, go!!

  35. fluidstatic says:

What a smile! this little guy makes me squee.

  36. I seriously want to jump in and kiss him for hours!

    Mama, too!

  37. Oi Peeps — just so you know, we are in fact aware that whales aren’t exactly “Fishes”. It’s the closest category we have, though.

    Carry on.

  38. Another Angela says:

I just can’t condone the captivity of whales and dolphins.

  39. At least Baby Beluga ain’t gonna git harpooned in the aquarium….

or eaten by a shark or an orca for that matter… like the one I saw on “The Blue Planet” last week…. all the Orcas drowned the baby blue whale… then just ate its jaw…. apparently, its the only bit they like.

zoos and aquariums serve a porpoise………….

    Cute or what…..

  40. I LOVE his stubby little snout! ^_^

  41. how cool! nice job takin the picture!!!

  42. I went to the shedd a few years ago on Wednesday morning. It was DEAD and the trainers were feeding the belugas.

Since no one was around, they let my hubby and I feed them and then we played catch with a beach ball. Possibly the coolest experience ever.

Apparently the belug approved of my feeding technique because it totally emptied its blow hole on me. The trainer said that it meant it liked me. I think the trainer was trying to keep me from being upset that I was soaked. I couldn’t have cared less–I had numerous COXCU with a belug LIVE. Best memory eva!

  43. SQUEEEEEEEEEEE!!! Smiling beluga baby! I want to snuggle heem!

  44. And in the last photo you can see a bit of his umbilical cord!

According to the site, the side folds are from “being scrunched up inside Mom.” Hee!

  45. Alessandro says:

Hello. This is a problem with your RSS in Google Reader. The GR don’t read your RSS and still loading for ever. Can you correct this problem?

  46. The Honourable Gladys Anstruther says:

    PPPBBBFFFTTTHH!!! to you little one.

  47. whoa!!! i JUST saw those belugas in REAL LIFE, last week!!!! fucking cute

  48. yeah haha better file it under fish than under pocket pets

  49. You do know that whales aren’t fish… ?

  50. Carrie- Hamster Defender says:

If these pictures were in Mad magazine, he’d be going Plllllbbbrrrrttttt.

    Just sayin’ ya know?

I love that Beluga’s always look so happy and smiley! This baby is very super adorable.

    XXXXXXX on it’s widdle face

  51. why is “room to grow” all cute on bebeh whale, but not so moishe when viewed in mirror? please clarify ;)

  52. Nice Christine says:

Theo! Maybe we are overdue for an aqua-mammal category, hmmm? I’d lurve it. I’m obsessed with aquariums.

  53. Yitzysmommie says:

    how right you are, jp!
This leetle (well, in comparison to Mom) guy is adorabuhls. Love the “smile” and the flippy flappy side chubs.

  54. hey have there ever been manatees on co? they are ridiculously adorable large-water snuggly critters too.

  55. All due respect to the captioners here (and this respect is GYNORMz)… the linked site’s (just after the 3rd pic) text next to these pictures made me weepy, talking about the first-day developmental stages and the mom’s prowess at getting the calf to meet them.

    What a wonderful event!

  56. Yep – that little baby was born on August 16th. Mom had things well in flipper. They noticed she was in labor and by the time all the staff arrived baby was out, swimming and breathing just fine.

Bella just had her 1st birthday and is starting to nibble on fish but is still mostly nursing. I saw her a few weeks ago and she was imitating her mom during the “show” of training behaviors. Soooo cute!

  57. I saw Bella this fall while on a trip to Chicago! So beautiful, but so sad that their ocean has walls…. How SUPER that Jenn got to play with them!

  58. @Hazel: Beluga are only hunted today by substinence hunter gathering peoples in the arctic, who kill to eat. The killer whales are doing the same. Although it may be personally abhorent to you that they are hunted… that’s just the way it works. It’s the natural world in action, as beautiful, in it’s way, as the birth of this animal.

  59. Aww, I miss Raffi.

  60. Rachel — that’s one thing you should never say around here, unless you’re prepared for…

  61. one of the erins says:

OK so the Shedd Aquarium’s website said in our third picture, that’s the remnant of the umbilical cord on the lil guy. Does that mean belugas have belly buttons? ^_^

  62. Oh I so totally didn’t have to look at the comments to get an earworm this time around. Pic=instant raffi song! *wanders off humming song*

  63. pat_the_bunny says:

O, the beatific smiles! They make me peaceful just looking at them. Actually, I want to BE them.

  64. uuuluuu…. I’m perfectly aware that the Orcas were only doing what comes natch to an Orca….

I have my personal opinions and views on the harvesting of whales, seals or any other animal (cute or otherwise) etc by Aboriginal peoples…. and don’t begin to assume that as I don’t go into depth on this forum, you know what they may be….

But my main point was that in this 21st century zoological parks and aquaria have a roll in education, research and conservation. Otherwise, yes I would agree they should be phased out.

  65. awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

  66. kel13123@hotmail.com says:

aww she smiled!!!! doesn’t get much cuter than gigantic babies smiling for the camera ppl…

  67. sundriedbagel says:

    what a cutie patootie! :)

  68. Check out the Beluga tune snippet on Amazon… now the earworm is totally STUCK and I’m never going to get it out!!
