Peeg in a cast :(

Le Pauvre!Poor leetle creepled peeg "Mello" is gonna take three weeks to heal.

Check out her cool cast, though. You could sign it with the tiniest of pens.

Bidus2

Kinda looks like an ice cream cone. I like that she has nibbles nearby.

Bidus5

And now, trying to go for a walk! Ehn!

Bidus6

Nice sending-inning, Pom-Pom (If that is your real name! [shifty eyes])

Poor leetle peeg! Definitely in the sad category.

  2. poor peeg!
i had no idea that their legs were so long though!

  3. Bless his heart!!!!

  4. Oh, poor baby! She is so adorable, though–guinea pigs stay sweet and loving through just about anything!

  5. Aww, poor piggy!

Haven’t we had a pig named Mello on CO before?
    =

  6. (My new kitten typed the “=” at the end of that post.)

  7. guineapiggin9 says:

Awww poor leetle pigglette. Get Better Soon!!!

  8. Ohhhh!! I have some many questions too! What happened to this poor little guy? And why the harness- do you think they help him walk with it?

  9. I just said [rising tone] “awwwwwwww!” out loud.

  10. Is that little bread treat in the shape of un petit coeur???

  11. donutbill says:

Cute…AND (just a wee bit)Sad. A speedy recovery to YOU, Ms. Mello!

  12. Why I wonder does a pig with a cast need a leash?

  13. Joo poor widdle piggie! D’aww!

  14. Oh no! What happened? And once it’s better, where does the rest of the leg go?

  15. peegmommy says:

    THIS RUINED MY LIFE :(

  16. Be happy, peegmommy! Someone cares so much about this pig that they are doing everything possible to help him/her!

I don’t know that everyone would make that investment (though I’d like to hope it happens more often than not).

  17. What material is a cast for a Peeg made from, anyway?

  18. I kept trying to think of how a guinea pig could possibly break its leg, then I started picturing him on a leetle teeny skateboard. Then I called my boyfriend because he’s out skateboarding and he’s really getting too old for that…

  19. I’m so glad they gave the piggle a chance and didn’t just put her down. Yay for modern veterinary technology!

  20. mervtheflamingo says:

    Jen –
Perhaps the wrapping used on Fuji mums and asian pears? That puffy, stretchy foam mesh.

  21. fish eye no miko says:

I agree with Alexis. While the idea of the poor piggie breaking his leg is sad, the fact that his mommy or daddy loves him enough to get care for him is very sweet.

I’m wondering–with a name like Mello, does that mean Pom-Pom is a _Death Note_ fan?

  22. People who get casts for hurt guinea pigs rock in my book. A+.

  23. Aw poor piggy DX But the cast is adorable. But what REALLY got me is that her name is Mello =P Which’s also the name of one of my favorite characters from the manga Death Note XXD Ahaha. Somehow I doubt it was on purpose n_n;; But it still made me laugh.

    Get well soon little Mello!

  24. Oh my! :( Get well little piggie!

I always wondered what happened if they broke one of their wee legs. Mine run and popcorn and jump so much…and their teeny dainty feet hold up such plump bodies.

I feel good now knowing if it ever did happen…they can cast it! :)

  25. Nina Enos says:

wer did u get the leash?

  26. That is SO cute! I love how the little foot just pokes out…guinea pigs have feet?!?:P

  27. “kinda looks like an ice cream cone” < -- uh, yeah, sure.

  28. IF I WERE A GUINEA PIG THAT WOULD BE ME!!!! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Best name ever.

  29. danceswithcrows says:

faycat: Skateboarding peegs! Back in 1990, I drew many pictures of guinea pigs, cats, and snakes riding skateboards and performing tricks. I don’t know why. But pigs typically keep their legs tucked under their bodies, so you rarely see them fully extended as you see in the pic above.

I don’t know why they have a harness on the pig. My attempts to fit a leash on my pig all ended in failure, because pigs are convex and very flexible.

  30. Poor poor piggy :(

  31. crazy! I have never seen a wee piggy in a cast. I didn’t know they ever would need one. get well soon cuteness!

  32. I get really upset with vets who think treating the “small stuff” is beneathe them. I took one of my hammies to one once who just laughed at me. Ben’s bottom teeth were growing at such an angle that they weren’t being worn down and I worried they eventually would pierce the top of his mouth and into his brain. So I took Ben to my dad (I was 37 at the time, not 7 as you might think). Dad took a pair of metal shears and snipped them off shorter and showed me how to keep them trimmed. Who needs Vets? But I think the vet willing to do this must be a teriffic one.

  33. fish eye no miko says:

Colleen said: “But what REALLY got me is that her name is Mello =P Which’s also the name of one of my favorite characters from the manga Death Note”

Indeed. In fact, with that name, I assumed he was a boy piggy. Whoops.

  34. Christine H says:

The cast totally looks like fishnet tights, only white instead of black.

  35. Awwww, poor leetle peeg! Get well soon, Mello!

  36. the hammy looks like he is wearing a Barbie leg!
I used to pull my barbies apart and swap bits….

  37. The Honourable Gladys Anstruther says:

Melo.Sheesh, this hospital food is the pits.

  38. Kellyhalia says:

    faycat:

Pigs can actually hurt their feet and legs (and backs) in wheels, which they aren’t supposed to have. Or a bunny could kick them (and potentially kill them) which is why they shouldn’t be housed together.

Or, you know, the skateboard ^_^

  39. I had no idea guinea pig’s legs were so…long. I hope Pom-Pom is on the mend and back to her normal peegy self soon. :)

  40. Oh my God, how does a guinea pig come out so perfectly triple-striped like that, hello? Also, would anyone else like to comment on the little crocheted cast covering action? So fashionable… all that having been said, I’m sad about the poor piglet and his broken leg but he’s clearly getting the treatment he needs for a speedy recovery :)

  41. luvinmalssomuch says:

Poor widdle piggy. Get better soon little fella.

  42. I hope your baby gets better as soon as possible and lives out her days as healthy as possible! What a precious cutie!!

  43. (weep!)
    get well cutey!

  44. Yitzysmommie says:

Mello: I thought it WAS you! Snerk, snerk!
Poor leetle mello Piggee. Get betters soon.

  45. I think it’s really sweet that the peeg’s mom cared enough to take the peeg to the vet.

  46. Shannon Johnson says:

That poor piggy! i am so glad that somebody is caring for the leetle piggy

  47. Carrie Hamster LOVER says:

awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww i wanna kiss da widdie biddie ree ree pig to make it feel awwwwwllll betterer.

how did the ree-ree get hurteded in the firstest place?

  48. piggiemommy says:

oh, this post made me so happy because i had to get surgery for one of my piggies, and i thought i was the only one crazy enough to do that. my poor chloe had a lump removed and kept taking out her staples, so she had to wear a mini lampshade around her neck. now her sister, ella, has a lump, so back to the vet we go. maybe we can start a piggie hospital with cute little beds and all-you-can-eat parsley.

  49. Vhat happened to dee leetle peeeeeeg!?!?!?! Poor, sad peeegeee!! Look how small his tocks are! Heeeheee!

  50. Awww! Mello is famous ^-^
She broke her leg when she jumped down from the table (I hope that it wasn’t an attempted suicide). The first vet that I went to said that it’s a displaced fracture and she had never setting the bone of a guinea pig before. She wanted to amputate her leg, so I went elsewhere. The other vet put Mello under an anaesthetic, made an x-ray, set the bone and put on a gypsum mesh.
Mello is fast even with this cast, that’s why I harnessed her.
I named her ‘Mello’ after character from Death Note. I know he was a boy, but he looked like a girl :d It was the only pretty name and I couldn’t name her ‘Misa’ because it means ‘bowl’ in polish _-_!

  51. Carrie Hamster LOVER says:

Are you the cute little hammie Chmurka’s mommy too?

  52. No, I’m not :)
But I’m also mommy of two gerbils ^-^

  53. WTF? Abuse is cute?

Why is this pig in a harness? They are very harmful to guinea pigs and should never be used. she will have a broken back along with the broken leg. And why does it have bread? Do you have any clue about guinea pig care?

No wonder she got hurt with a crappy owner like you. Yeah, it’s nice that you fixed her leg, but if you took the time to learn about proper guinea pig care, it wouldn’t have happend.

  60. We run a pet photo gallery on the site I work for. It amazes me that people who think an animal is being abused *also* thinks that ranting about it on a Web site is going to do anything about it.

pom-pom — Hoping to God this person doesn’t get to you, because I admire the fact that you took the time for Melo. I know how I get when one of my pigs gets hurt (even though a lot of times it’s ‘natural selection’ injuries — I love my babies, but Squeak can be a little idiot). It’s nice to see that other people follow through on it. A lot of vets won’t even do that.

    And WTF amputation??? Ugh.

  61. If they’re harmful for piggies, why they’re selling them? Do u think that I lift her on a leash or what? Vet said that she shouldn’t lay down all the time, because of bed-sores, so I took her for a walk, because in cage she doesn’t move. She’s in harness, because she’s young and she isn’t accustomed yet. That was her first walk, so she could get scared, run and hurt herself.
And it’s not a bread, it’s a dietetic cracker. They’re also in a piggy food and she loves them.
Stop teaching me, while you don’t have any knowledge.

  62. I just did a little research and found that there seem to be lots of guinea pig harnesses on the market, but there seems to be a concern that the piggie will suddenly bolt and the two sections of the harness will bend its back and injure it. I can see where that might happen. Still, no reason to be a jerk about it.

  68. Their skeletons are very delicate, but i don’t think piggies have enought strength to break their spine bolting. And harness is tied round her ribs and somwhere near clavicles and shoulder blades, so it has nothing to do with spine.

  69. Sounds like your vet is experienced at working with guinea pigs – it can be a real pain finding one who is. I don’t know if you’ve ever been to the Guinea Lynx site, pom-pom, but they’ve got a list of guinea pig vets over there – you might want to let people know about this one. Your piggie is very cute. One of mine’s got the same sort of pattern, but with fur that stands up more.
As for the harness – eh, they sell a lot of stuff for guinea pigs that’s bad for them, wheels and balls and stuff like that, and food with seeds in it that piggies aren’t supposed to have. What we do with our boys when it’s time to exercise is set up a pen on the kitchen floor and put two plates of veggies on opposite sides of it. Not the most energetic pigs in the world, but they will work for food.

  70. Amber – Begone! We have no use for your kind here! If you have an informed, helpful comment to make, in a KIND, RESPECTFUL manner, then by all means, do so. Most pet owners are eager to learn. But don’t come in here with your ignorance and start heaping abuse on someone when you obviously don’t know WTF is going on.

  71. Pom Pom I love your web name and your piggies name too. Mello is beautiful, and I am sure you are a very good piggie owner. Thanks for sharing your pictures and Miss Mello’s story.

  72. While I hate seeing anything in a cast or anything, it does warm my heart a bit to see where people are willing to care for their little animals.

  73. Aww bless thee poor crippled peeg! Judging by her weight it looks like she hasn’t been eating well.. piggies are like that when they’re feelin’ poorly.

Just to let you know – harnesses are very bad for guinea pigs. They can severely damage their little backs!

  74. Those balls and wheels are mostly produced for rats. As I said, I don’t think guinnie has enough strenght to break her spine. The harness is just in case piggy would run and hide under the furniture or my dog would try to attack her. I’m not pulling her while walking and if something would happen, I would not lift her up on the harness, geez, I’m not retarded-.-

  75. I know she’s thin, Kat. She’s about 4 months old. I got her from a pet-shop few days ago. They were keeping her in a small cage without fresh food. She’s so thin I can feel her bones and I’m skared when I take her out of the cage, because she’s so delicate and lightweight :| I don’t know what kind of food will make her fatter fast but without causing health impairment.

  76. Is she eating enthusiastically? Since she’s under a year old, she should have a good, plain alfalfa-based pellet, hay available all the time (grass hay is good for digestion, but you can also have alfalfa as she’s young) and fresh vegetables at least twice a day. As long as she’s eating she will put weight on. Has her broken bone affected her appetite at all?

  77. She has hay, fresh vegetables and guinea-pig food all the time. She behaves like a normal, healthy piggy^^ except that she eats a lot in the middle of the night instead of sleeping. I have the impression that the cast doesn’t disturb her at all.

  78. Drat, yesterday’s post didn’t go through!

First, HUZZAH that you found a vet to take care of your baby! It’s not easy to find a good exotics vet—and gpigs are exotics in the vet universe.

Pigs are 24 hour animals, and eat all day long, so as long as there is food, the weight will come. Hay and such are not high calorie, unfortunately. Try fruits as well, my Pansy loves cantaloupe! Some pigs also like banana, though none of mine ever did.

Oxbow Critical Care is a feed supplement for sick pigs that the vet will have, but if she is eating on her own, you won’t need it.

SO happy to see another well cared for guinea pig!

(and re harnesses—pigs do NOT have any idea about WALKIES anyway!)

  79. Mello loves jam and water melon. She snatches it from my hands, when i feed her. I’m afraid of giving her too much fruits and sweets, because she may be taken ill with diabetes.

  80. Awwww! This is definately a “cute but sad” post. Such a tiny little cast she has there, poor piggy. But like others have said, so glad to see people that actually take care of the little guys.

Have a youngish pig at my house that’s kind of a daredevil. He’s one to try and jump from my hands when he’s WAY above the cage. I’m surprised he hasn’t broken anything yet. His cagemate just looks one in piggy-awe, lol.

  81. Forgot something. Try not to give her too much watermelon (ie: once a week or so). It can give piggies diarrhea if given in excess. =(

  82. Aww, poor little piggy! I am glad you’re taking care of him, though. My coworkers thought I was nuts because I spent hours late at night at an emergency vet when my little guy was on the verge of death. A couple months and lots of meds later he was just fine. Now, almost a year later, he’s tough and sassy just like before, and back up to a nice plump weight.

Keep up the good work loving and caring for your cavy!

  83. KC: Maybe some of guinea pigs have suicidial tendencies :d
She gets water melon very rarely, so I hope nothing bad will happen to her.

Quoda: Aww, I’m glad your piggie is happy and healthy^^
Mello was sassy even seconds after an accident. She was puring and sleeping on my lap on the way to vet. Today she was popcorning all over the cage ^^

  84. She was popcorning with the cast on? Wow! That’s one energetic little pig. Or has she had the cast off already?

  85. No, she was popcorning with a cast ^^ or maybe she’e got fleas:|

  86. Pom Pom, I think you are an awesome owner. take care of your new little piggie. many happy days of love ahead for you. She will fatten up all on her own as she gets the more variety of the food you are feeding and with more stimulation and exercise. she will fatten right up.

  87. What a cutie! Beautiful coloring. Interesting discussion. The only suggestion I’d make is to not put guinea pigs or similar small animals on any height without boundries. I guess that’s why the vet had you get a harness for her. Anyway, thanks for sharing. The cast looks kinda’ sexy — like a lacey stocking!! :)

  88. Now we have a huge problem, because the cast is too tight. Her paw is big and red. Vet cut off a piece of cast, but id didn’t help:/ now it’s even bigger and almost blue. I called the vet and he told me to cut off some of cast by myself or visit him tommorow. I hope nothing will happen to her little paw till tommorow, because I cat off only some pieces of cast that were pricking her leg.

  89. Pom Pom cut more she is loosing circultation. you may need to take off whole cast. DO not wait till you see the vet tomorrow… Poor little piggie.

  90. I had to go to real hospital to take the whole cast off. My mom works as a nurse, so we went to a operating suite to find suitable tools. We tried to cut off only a part of it with to other nurses, but those tools were too big for piggie and we had to unroll whole cast. Now it’s 7:17AM I’m waiting for my mom to come back from work and we’re going to vet again. It looks like Mello sprained his leg, or it’s numb, or she’s trying not to stand on it, or it’s broken again. God, my english is terrible.

  91. How’s your piggie now pom-pom?

  92. Vet said her leg is fine, the bone is knitting very fast and I have to go to the vet tommorow, to get her a new cast, because now her leg is swollen. She may not recover 100% efficiency of her leg, but that’s a lot better than amputation.

  93. I’m glad things are looking good for her. I hope the new cast will be less tight as the first one!

  94. It looks like her leg is quite well. She can even scratch her ear with it :d I uploaded some photos of Mello on deviantart.

  95. Ok….I’m going to kill myself now. That is the saddest thing I have ever seen! Poo lil ting! :(

  96. QUICK! Pom-pom, do you have HEART CASTS, because mine just broke. D:

Being 1,649 miles away from my piggehs makes me sad. Can Christmas come faster, plzkthnx.

  97. OMG *cry* *love* soooo cute…and sad…
