3 Not That Mike The Other Mike 07.16.07 at 3:25 am

“Where the hell are the pedals? Man, this is the lamest boat ride EVER…”

4 Aubrey 07.16.07 at 3:33 am

“Hey, you crazy driver! Take a swan dive, why don’t ya?

You wanna turn left? Cygnet left! Don’t keep it a secret!”

5 whitewingedcat 07.16.07 at 3:35 am

They really hate mini marshmallows! They get all sticky and expand in the water! PPPTTttt.

6 Not That Mike The Other Mike 07.16.07 at 3:47 am

But what they hate more than marshmallows are those Swanson frozen dinners. And you’d think they’d really go for them, because it’s got “swan” right there in the name, but no…

Your Public Service Announcement for Today:

Bread serves no dietary purpose for waterfowl. If you feed regularly or some place where waterbirds are often fed bread – try replacing with cracked corn! (I know the bread is easier to come by. I just learned that working in a park where EVERYONE felt the need to feed the ducks, lol. Lotsa fat ducks….)

Thank you for listening…:)

11 Shannon again 07.16.07 at 4:16 am

but must add the softness of the plush is unreal! They are beautiful.

12 Peter 07.16.07 at 4:19 am

Uh oh. One of them is mute…

13 Not That Mike The Other Mike 07.16.07 at 4:19 am

Good tip, Shannon. And if anyone needs some cracked corn, you can take all you want from my friend Jimmy. I don’t care. ;-)

14 Martha in Washington 07.16.07 at 4:20 am

Is that poor little one all by himself the “ugly” duckling? Poor Bebeh!! Don’t worry…you’ll be just as beautiful as mom someday.

I no can ride on swan cuz I too big :(

21 Christine H 07.16.07 at 6:09 am

they’re all beautiful now!
teeny fuzzy swanlets! (actually cygnets, apparently, which I should have known)

22 Alice Shortcake 07.16.07 at 7:01 am

During a recent visit to Stratford-upon-Avon I was surprised to see signs asking people not to feed the ducks and swans with white bread, which can cause wing deformities due to a lack of certain vitamins/minerals. Wholemeal bread is fine, apparently.

23 Surfrock66 07.16.07 at 10:17 am

On a related note, two baby ducklings ended up in my parent’s swimming pool with no mommy to be found. Aside from some bread to make sure they don’t starve, it’s been 2 days and no mother duck has come by. Is there any advice on how to help them until they can become independent? I live across the country from them, but apparantly my parents put a towel on the pool raft in a U shape and the ducks climb on and huddle there, otherwise they just bob around.

24 sas 07.16.07 at 10:20 am

Ooh! Thems be the cutest swanboats ever! (sorry Boston)

Speaking of Excellent… can anyone identify this little dude? http://icanhascheezburger.files.wordpress.com/2007/07/excellent.jpg

25 Jen 07.16.07 at 11:53 am

Yay Trumpet of the Swan!

The other day I saw two parent swans leading a tidy line of cygnets neatly down a river. ‘Twas the coolest thing ever. Well except for this pic of course.

26 metsakins 07.16.07 at 12:06 pm

Surfrock66 – perhaps your parents could call the local parks department or some sort of wildlife place. There must be someone around with that sort of info.

27 metsakins 07.16.07 at 12:07 pm

the swans in the pond near me are never doing cute stuff like this…

28 acelightning 07.16.07 at 12:15 pm

“Swan swam over the sea;
Swim, swan, swim!
Swan swam home again;
Well swum, swan!”

29 CuteBabyFix.com 07.16.07 at 12:21 pm

This mama needs a “baby on board sign! Those babies are really loving their sweet ride, they have heated down filled seats, and a great view! More swans:

FUZZBALLS!!!! Squeeeeeee!

33 chanpon 07.16.07 at 2:08 pm

Is it wrong that I want to grab a baby in each hand and rub it all over my face? *embarassed*

34 Jorden 07.16.07 at 2:27 pm

Yeee! Little black beaks! I JUST finished reading The Trumpet of the Swan for the first time in yonks. Love love LOVE E.B. White.
Does anyone know anything about peacocks? There is a sign in our local Agway saying “Free Male Peacock” and I wonder what their requirements are (we have some land). Are they loud?

35 Theresa 07.16.07 at 2:32 pm

Cracked corn? But I don’t care. :P

36 Theresa 07.16.07 at 2:32 pm

PS: SQUEEEEEEE! **thud**

37 Theresa 07.16.07 at 2:33 pm

Peacocks scream their tiny heads off, and yes, they are loud.

38 educand 07.16.07 at 2:41 pm

This makes me think of the swan boats we have in the Public Gardens here in Boston.

39 Noelle 07.16.07 at 2:45 pm

Too cute.

40 Metz 07.16.07 at 2:46 pm

Mama swan gather up the rest of your bebbehs quick! There’s a tick in the next post! Run for your lives!

41 Metz 07.16.07 at 2:47 pm

aaaaah! what cyute cygnet action!!

43 Robbie 07.16.07 at 4:42 pm

“Soggy McBreadsville”. LOL! That made my morning!

Beautiful photo, too.

44 Catherine 07.16.07 at 4:58 pm

Peter- the mute one must have left his chalkboard and chalk over on the side of the pond, don’t you think?

45 sarai 07.16.07 at 5:11 pm

OOOhhhhh! Fuzzzy…. Sometimes I wish the little bebeh animals would stay little bebeh’s forever…

Jordan, peacocks need some room to roam, so you’re covered there, but they make a noise that’s a lot like a woman screaming. It’s quite unnerving if you’re not used to it. The feathers on the back and booty are called the train, and they shed them once a year. It takes about 7 months or so for them to grow back. Our zoo has both white and “regular” peacocks. Ironically enough, baby swans are cuter (to me) than baby peafowl! (The proper collective name of the bird is peafowl. Boys are peacocks and girls are peahens.)

46 sarai 07.16.07 at 5:35 pm

sas: It’s Mr Burns! From the Simpsons…

47 Kaitoujuliet 07.16.07 at 6:21 pm

“So, when does the next swan leave?”

http://www.anecdotage.com/index.php?aid=9256

48 bongobunny 07.16.07 at 6:21 pm

Um, chanpon, I have to admit that that was my first thought, too. :-P
Surfrock, there may be a local wildlife rescue group that could help your parents with their ducks (you can look under wildlife or animals in the local yellow pages or on the internet), but if you don’t know of one, this one is in San Diego, and they’d probably be happy to give you some advice:

http://www.projectwildlife.org/

Their phone # is: 619-225-9202

Hope that helps!

Oh, and to the CO web goddess: PLEASE no more pix of ticks. Eeewww!!!

49 Jorden 07.16.07 at 9:16 pm

Thank you, Sarai!
Maybe I should pass on this free peacock…???…

50 NotSupposedToBeDoingThisAtWork 07.17.07 at 1:34 pm

oh teh cute… this is cute on a nearly sublime level…

am i missing something? why do a couple of people think one is mute… ??

51 Metz 07.17.07 at 1:37 pm

not supposed, its a reference to the book/movie Trumpet of the Swan. Swans are supposed to be mute only making a “trumpet” at their death…(trying to remember whole thing but forgetz)

52 olivia 07.17.07 at 2:09 pm

that is so cute how did u get a picture of that it is the cutest thing in the world!!!the baby’s are all so fluffy and the mother, well lets just say i have never seen andything more gracefull or lovely in my entire life. just one more question what is i that they’re eating? is it ice or snow?

53 NotSupposedToBeDoingThisAtWork 07.17.07 at 6:06 pm

ooohhhhhhhhh, i see now… thanks Metz! :)

and now I’m stunned there’s an e. b. white book i didn’t read when i was a kid… guess i’ll have to check it out!

keep coming back to these cuties… so anerable! :D

54 Brian 07.17.07 at 6:42 pm

NTMTOM

GROAN. Did you watch “Veterinarian’s Hospital” much as a child? :D

I chuckled at that for a good 15 minutes.

55 Catherine 07.17.07 at 7:36 pm

In the book, Trumpet of the Swan, a little swan was born unable to honk. A little boy had made friends with the duck and got him a little chalkboard and some chalk so he could write to the other ducks, since he couldn’t honk. It’s one of my most favorite books; so great!

56 Seferm 07.18.07 at 8:41 am

Incredible with the swans. Great picture to look!

57 akash 07.19.07 at 8:37 am

58 Riss 07.19.07 at 9:21 am

Trumpet of the Swan! Haven’t thought about that book in ages. I remember my teacher reading it to us in 2nd grade. ^_^

59 kaly 07.23.07 at 4:31 am
