The elusive, bamboo-leecking red Panda

Sender-inner "Hideous Lump" says it’s a CRIME that we haven’t posted more red Pandas.

For once, Hideous Lump is ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. So here we go.

  1. eeeee!

sheesh can’t even speak properly I’m so excited.

  2. Totally, 100% agree. When I first saw this site, I was amazed to find that ther were no red pandas! I LOVE red pandas!!

    First post?

  3. acelightning says:

That little face is just bleening unbelievable, with all that “makeup” on!

  4. frida_fan66 says:

Ahh there’s nothin’ like a little panda lovin to get yer day goin!

  5. Alice Shortcake says:

Black and white pandas have hogged the limelight for too long. All hail the red panda!

  6. The fat furry tail..the fat furry tail….kronsche!

  7. Guessing that Flat Panda lives in a hot zoo. My sister’s floofy cat used to assume that posture on hot days with belleh smooshed into the (relatively) cool floor.

  8. Martha in Washington says:

If only all the world’s Navies would use the Red Panda Torpedo instead of those nasty explosive ones! It would be a much more civilized world. Just imagine…
    “Captain, incoming at 4 o’clock!”
“Yes Chief, let it come. We are running low on snorgles today.”
    “Aye aye, Captain.”
“All Hands, snorgling will commence at 0700 hours.”

  9. Moggyfan says:

I don’t know where he is, or whose he is, but if I asked REALLY, REALLY nicely, do you think I could have him?

  10. Awwww….I’ve loved these guys since spotting them at the Bronx Zoo as a kid.

    They’re highly endangered though. 😦

  11. Oh, and just in case any of you guys hadn’t heart – this one’s an escape artist:

  12. Wait, what?

Leave it to the Japanese. I want one too.

    Okay, shuttin’ up now. 🙂

  13. MaliceAlice says:

*Dies* I’m ded. DED, you hear?! And it’s the best way I’ve ever died. Mmmm, panda tongue overdose. This is probably the first time I’ve actually tried to snorgle through the screen. I’ve threatened to before, but that leetle tongue. Ooooh. *Dies and is ded again*

  14. I shot (well, on video of course) a cute Panda in Beijing one, have a look:

  15. MaliceAlice says:

BTW, Christina, why did you have to post that video! I would have been happier thinking pandas couldn’t have any hoomon contact, which is why I haven’t snorgled/kidnapped one yet. Damn that girl! Anyone know what the premise of that show is and how one gets to live with TWO RED PANDAS!!? Whew. I need to lay down. More.

  16. a pom poko panda?!?!!

  17. The Honourable Gladys Anstruther says:

Herro orl my clute ovelerload frans, it are lully tloo gleet you.

  18. Solange says:

The Japanese girl with the red pandas was posted a while back on this site, and I have bookmarked it ever since! Red pandas are my fave. Too bad their natural numbers are really low. There’s teh red panda project if ne1 is interested in contributing:

  19. mzkamikaze says:

    you didn’t enhance the tongue!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    >>faints from disappointment< <

  20. A common schoolyard song in Japan (the tune of which can be heard in the arcade game Ponpoko and a variation of which is sung in the Studio Ghibli film Pom Poko [in which we see “A Tanuki using its enlarged scrotum to fight off a police officer”] makes explicit reference to the tanuki’s anatomy:

Tan Tan Tanuki no kintama wa,
    Kaze mo nai no ni,
    Bura bura

(Roughly translated, this means “Tan-tan-tanuki’s testicles, there isn’t even any wind but still go swing-swing-swing”.[1] It then proceeds to continue for several verses, with many regional variations. It is sung to the melody of an American Baptist hymn called Shall We Gather At The River?.[2])

  21. Panda torpedo!!! LOL

Too much cuteness at the same time.

  22. I have always considered red pandas to have among the highest Cute Quotients(Q-teQ) of all animals, but these pictures are above and beyond!

  23. O

  24. While I absolutely adore cats above all creatures, the red panda pics have put into a cuteoverload-induced coma.

I am printing these out to take to work so when I suffer the slings and arrows of the insanity at work I will have a reason to smile. Thanks! ;o)

  26. Purple Belt says:

Outstanding. Unbelievably cute. I love little Mr. Pandersons.

  27. Thank you Hideous Lump for helping to bring extweeeme cuteyness to the world!

  28. the list of animals with tongues goes on amazing…..

  29. weensicka says:

I’m on the red panda bandwagon. Or pandwagon? I sent in some pics a wee bit ago, but I’m glad to see any anerable pan-pans showin’ up on the CO.

    Hee! It keels me!

  30. [deep breath] SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!

There are red pandas in the central park zoo…I just may have to go for a leetle veesit. Metz – we should meet up! Maybe one of these weekends….

  31. Yes, my name is really Cricket says:

I think that the red panda is possibly the cutest of all the animals in the entire world! And kittens. What’s cuter than red pandas and kittens?

I try to get to the Bronx Zoo once a year when they have the baby festivities. I got to see a baby red panda last year, I just wanted to snorgle the living snot right outta him! 🙂

  32. Yes, my name is really Cricket says:

DKN, I tewtally forgot about the red pandas in Central Park! I know what I’m doing next weekend! (Not this weekend, I’m reading Harry Potter).

Speaking of the Central Park Zoo… have you been to the penguin exhibit there? They have a gay couple that get all depressed that they never have an egg. They finally felt bad and gave them one, they were all happy! Next time you go, ask them about it! 🙂

  33. NYgirly says:

*[ever-so-gently] tosses red panda into da washing machine with mild detergent*

*pulls red panda out of washing machine, gives a firm shake and [ever-so-gently] puts heem into da dryer on fluff cycle*

*pulls out pocket-sized red panda puff, kisses da bejeezuz out of his cute widdle facey-face and puts heem in mah pocket where he is forever loveled and huggled*

  34. Yeah!! Cricket, I’ve visited Wendel and Cass the gay penguins (though couldn’t tell which ones they were, of course). An interesting thing happened to them! When the penguin population started to dwindle, they both went straight and mated with females! I don’t know if they stayed with them just that once and went back to being gay penguins or what. I wouldn’t be surprised if they did go back to the gay thing because they were together for SO LONG! Like 9 years or something. And I always thought it was funny that the zoo keepers swore up and down that Wendel and Cass had the cleanest nest! 🙂

  35. I visited the red panda in the Bronx Zoo this past Christmas…

    even hubby said awww….

  36. Dozo yoroshiku, Panda San.

As for gay penguins going straight to save the species…aren’t the machinations of nature amazing?

Anthropologists have long posited that there are distinct benefits to herd or group species for a certain portion of them to be gay, because those animals tend to contribute to the wellbeing of the GROUP rather than to their own offspring. (Think of your favorite gay aunt or uncle, or you know, if you’re the favorite gay aunt or uncle, give yourself a pat on the back. And then take those nieces and nephews to da Bronx Zoo to see some red pandas!)

  37. Hells yeah, RedZ. I’ve always had a working theory in my head that homosexuality is an evolutionary trait based in population control and quality control, too, as in having extra nurturing hands around.

  38. I love the torpedo picture! He’s all flat with his little legs sticking out perpendicular! It’s so cute! *hugs panda*

  39. OMG!!!!! too much! too much!! leeking panda and panda torpedo and smiling panda!!

  40. leah b. says:

Its a *BLEEN* face at the end , I am so happy and comfortables I could nap somemore. what a wonderful surprise this am CO
I need a animal *BLEEN* today

  41. Red pandas are one of my FAVORITE animals at the zoo! They are so freakin’ cute. They look like little red cat/racoons! They are so fluffy and chubby and just look fun to cuddle 😉

  42. So this is why they keep telling me to Get Firefox. I want to download and install this cute panda.

  43. Y’know, someone needs to cross-breed these things with Fennecs.

They’d conquer the world with cuteness.

  44. chanpon says:

    Luv the lump-on-a-porch-look.

  45. A couple years ago I visited the Milwaukee Zoo in Wisconsin, they had a red panda (which is one of my favorite animals eeeevvver, and if I could have them as pets I tewtally would), but this one’s tail had been cut off! I’m not sure why, but I was so sad. They use their tails as pillows when they sleep, and to keep them warm… and Milwaukee is cold! Oh, such a cruel world we live in.

  46. Awwww, that’s so cute! The torpedo panda looks just like a baby seal (well, except for the colour… and the big tail… and the feet).

Cricket, I’d never heard about the gay penguins. I’ll have to check out the Central Park Zoo the next time I’m in NYC!

  47. Dee Nah says:

Yay, red pandas. I’ve watched these guys for hours, all the while wanting to just hug them to pieces. Snorgglumph!

  48. That is the cutest! If someone fired a panda torpedo at me, I would surrender. I assume that upon impact, copious amounts of leeking and snorgling would commence.

  49. Agreed… there needs to be more of these guys posted. And more Fennec foxes too!

  50. debkakes says:

I think I’ve found my daemon!

Trivia: Did you know the first Indian prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru (who gave the Independence Day address at midnight on August 15, 1947) had a pet Red Panda?

  52. I didn’t know that, Subi. Thanks for increasing my wealth of trivia.

  53. PANDA TONGUE!!!!!!!

  54. The panda tongue is so cute!!!! That really made my week 😉

  55. Where is the C.O.X.C.U. of the tongue???? WE NEED IT!!!

  56. I worked in our local zoo for awhile and assisted the red panda keeper. Red pandas were one of the few exhibits we could handle and pet every night. In fact we had to weigh them each night, we did so by tempting them with grapes. They look soft, but their outer fur is actually pretty course. They are the most gentle animals I am ever met.

Yes I am trying to make people jealous.

  57. Daisy, it’s working.

  58. DanTana says:

Red Pandas are ADORABLE. It’s about time!!!

  59. Daisy, having worked with them I have to ask, are they related to Racoons and Possums et al? or maybe this guy?

  60. Oh my. So cute. So very very cute. That last picture is just killer.

Now we just need some pictures of sun bears or flying foxes.

  61. This is the mascot of Firefox! Gotta love it! =)

  62. We soo need a category for tongues!

  63. Fuzzybutt says:

    I [heart] FLAT PANDA!

  64. book_monstercats says:

LOL at “panda torpedo”. This panda should be cloned and then torpedoed into every war zone in the world. S/he will then get up, do that cute-faced bow and world peace will ensue. We can but dream…..

  65. caitlin black says:

    now that iz cute!!!

  66. Perhaps it’s sacrilege to say, but I <3 red pandas even more than Giant Pandas! *ducks to avoid any puddin' bombs*

Hey guys, doesn’t anybody use the CuteChat anymore? I thought “Casual Fridays” was the ‘happenin’ time? Here’s the link.
    /end threadjack

  67. Tina Rhea says:

Metz, that’s not a coatimundi in the photo; it’s some sort of fox.

To the best of my recollection, giant pandas are related to bears, and red pandas are related to raccoons and coatis. The two species just engaged in some convergent evolution because their ancestors both started munching bamboo as a primary diet.

Love the torpedo– one of our cats does that, only with the front feet folded, and we call it the Turtle position.

  68. It’s ABOUT TIME! I love red pandas! Love love love love love!

  69. Oh my! That is just too freaking cute of a panda! Especially like the “ta-dah” bow picture at the end!

  70. kel13123 says:

omg!!! i didn’t know red pandas existed, much less that they were so cute! such strange coloring, but I can’t seem to tear my eyes away…

  71. Someone asked me what my favorite animal was today (I’m a camp counselor) and I said “red panda.”

    Dangerously cute!

  72. crazyauntvicki says:

Looks like a cute wittle puppeh to me!
If there ever is a red panda give away, I want one. Then again, where would I get bamboo from? Maybe I shouldn’t get one…well, I can dream, can’t I?

  73. my day is now complete.*sigh* how i love the red pandas. they are aboslutly qte!

  74. I live in the UK and I’m surprised the cuteoverload peeps couldn’t hear my *SQUEEEEEEEEEEE!!!* from America! ITS SO CUUUUUUTE!!! I love the little bow, its all ‘arigato’ ^_^ SQUEEEE!!

  75. huh… so THAT’S what that was
(thought the dryer belt was wearing out)

  76. I love the high forehead of the red pandas! so cute!

  77. Yitzysmommie says:

MMMM, can’t decide which is my favorite picture of this anerable critter. Must look and relook some more….

  78. Paul Smith says:

    That is soo cool

  79. ThreeCatNight says:

So foxlike with that delicately beautiful little face. I love that smooshed pose in the second pic; looks like a chubby little furry beached seal — so pooped!

  80. hey, that’s Sanju!!!! My girlfriend adapted her for me for Christmas!
