A few years ago I was walking dogs on the banks of the Miss. River when a bald eagle flew in front of me. It was about 6 ft. higher than my head and about 15 feet in front of my face. Talk about a shocker. I also saw one as road-kill, very recently hit. It’s been a few years and I still wonder how a bald eagle came to be road-kill…

I read a story (can’t remember where now, sorry) saying that naturalists are surprised at how well bald eagles are doing in suburban (and even light urban) areas. When I lived in the Seattle area, I used to see bald eagles while driving across the 520 bridge all the time. Development might not be as big a threat as we think…

Such a handsome fellow!

Does anybody know why their beaks are such a brilliant shade of yellow? Is there a reason for it, or is it just Ma Nature having fun with the Crayolas again? :3

impressive nostrils, indeed, but eagles don’t have a sense of smell.

They do eat furry creatures! Especially wild bunnies. I recently went through a short hunting phase, trying to be the “pioneer woman” and learn to hunt and butcher my family’s food. Once, right after shooting, an eagle swept down and took my dinner away! Pretty cool, actually. Sorry about the hunting story, folks. I don’t do it anymore. But at the time, it seemed better than taking part in America’s slaughterhouse culture.
The eagles sit together in our tall Douglas Fir tree, and say,”Eee Eee Eee, Eee Eee Eee, Eee Eee Eee, Wicca Wicca Wicca!” Their nest is at the farm next to mine. Once I saw them mating, actually falling through the sky with their wings making a whistling sound. I was stunned, (as they were, after hitting the ground!); it was a total spiritual experience to watch!

Oh my gosh I got to see one soaring over a lake here in California on our camping trip last year. IT was magnificent and beautiful and it took my breath away.

I am not even remotely American, but I agree. What a better way to celebrate?

As cliched as it may sound, protecting the environment and the wildlife is the greatest gift we can give to the generations come.

That is a wonderful point about the eagle being taken off the endangered species list on the 4th. Wouldn’t that have been a great tribute? I think more people would have been aware of this positive story if it would have been done that way.
