I have conversations with my big old cat Loki all the time. He still has a tiny little meow, which sounds funny coming from a big cat. But I understand what he’s saying, and I think he understands most of what I’m saying, although I know he’s thinking, “Human, your accent *sucks*!”

Awww! Kitten just wanted to be petted, but the person didn’t speak enough cat to understand that. I love talky cats!
cute as heck kitty. the woman really needs to work on her *mew*….but then I’m used to my daughter, who has a masters in kitty-speak – been studying intensely her whole life.
This reminded me of when her adopted stray had a litter and was by her bed nursing the kitties, when she looked up at Taj and meowed – very specifically, taj mewed back of course, just jokingly, but kitty kept it up, and got very insistent with whatever she was telling her (or, as it turned out – asking). After a good few minutes of this, she sat 1/2 way up (while kitties were still trying to nurse), waited for further assurance from taj, sat up some more (all this while, they’re mewing back and forth); started to stand up – still mewing intently. By this point taj was worried there was something really wrong. She mewed back at her one more time, and the momma managed to get away from the kitties to go use the litter box. Then came right back and was all quite and content.

I done that in the past. Works best with kittens, adult cats, some do some don’t. I used to have a nice meow when I was younger, lost it some years ago.

This makes me miss my kitteh back home soooo much – he’s a ten-year-old Siamese, but we talk ALL the time. ^.^ One time he got left outside in the rain, and when I pulled up in the driveway he ran out to the car and chewed me out the whole way back inside. You can always count on a Siamese to let you know what they want!

What a sweet kitten. Looks like whoever owns it is very loving. Kittens need to face-butt with their owners, just to show the love. And tummy rubs are always a good thing.

This is practically me with our monster-size Bentley-cat.
Except he’ll always start it by laying on the floor, staring intently at me, then going “Mrrrough!”
I’ll mimic him, he’ll make another kitty sound, I’ll mimic that, and he’ll get more and more excited the more we go back and forth. I think he starts by saying something nice, like “Hey, how goes it?” then, once he realizes that I’m just repeating back everything he says, saying things like “Cats are supreme!” or “Humans are stupid!” He always looks especially smug when he stops the game, which is a look usually reserved for minor revenges, like sitting on papers we’re using after we move him from the couch, or tricking us to leave our turkey sandwiches unattended if we didn’t give him a piece while we were initially making it.
I do this with my cat as well. I think she just wants the last word all the time. Just the other night she wanted to get out of my room but the door was shut, so she started meowing. I meowed back at her, and got a prompt response each time. I knew she wanted out, that was for sure.

As I was watching this my kitteh Andrew mewed and jumped up in my lap, just like little kitteh in the video. Of course, Andrew has about 12 pounds and 14 years on little kitteh in the video. Mew!
Mine only do this when there is some serious gain to be had from acting cute:s Like tuna or chicken. Nowadays he’s mainly a bundle of energy surplus since he hates snow and only goes out to do what he has to do. Energy surplus is used on mischief.

Aww–that’s how Speak got his name. When he was about that size, he’d ‘miew’ at me, and I’d talk back.
Now he’s a very chatty 20-pound monster. Which is cute, because he’ll follow us around when we get home from work and tell us about his day.

I hope that the Pimsleur language series will come out soon with a CD set of beginning Cat-ese. Not Cantonese. They already have that. Cat-ese. Then I could sit down one-on-one with a kitteh and have a really good conversation about chasing squirrels, ordering a coffee and a beer in Kitty Land, calling for a taxi, finding a hotel room, and changing the litterbox when needed. It would put all future relationships between kittehs and me on a whole new level.

I LOVE catversations. We have a lot of them around here, especially Jess who comments on everything from ‘You’re home, I’m starving’ to ‘It’s bedtime, don’t forget our snacks’. This utterly sweet kitten made both Sara and Jess look at each other, then at me, then they went looking for the kitten, separately. With every ‘real’ mew, they’d pause, readjust the radar ears and look some more. I choked on my coffee!

I just looked at this video on You Tube as well as other videos that were submitted featuring this kittie, by the same user. Apparently, the kitten’s name is Myth. There’s a video on You Tube showing Myth’s first snowfall. It is very cute.
The cuteness, it makes me weak! Oh, and male calico-kitties, while rare, do exist. I worked at a Humane Society cat shelter about a decade ago, and I drove a not-even-half-grown cali to the vet to be spayed. The vet called us later, very amused, and said he’d certainly neuter the little fella if we wanted, but spaying was rather out of the question. We’d just seen his coloring and assumed, without doing the standard ‘flip and check’. We got paranoid about cali-age after that, and ended up stumbling over three others, which was all but a haystack needle statistically, consider the sheer volume of calicos that we saw.
Random trivia-bit, the black-orangegold calicos with limited or no white markings were obscenly hard to adopt out, and last heard, that’s still the case in most areas in the U.S.
Also, while I can’t support this statistically, it’s just my random observation from that job, inkjet/laser printers are a wonderful invention for owners of male orange tabbies. Invariably, when they could not commandeer a lap, one or another would try to sleep -inside- the dot matrix printers, and would not vacate the premises until the thing actually started moving. We kept a sign on the computers that said to check the printer for tabbies before printing. Yes, we could have just built a cover, but they loved the nap-spot so much, and the cat hair that occasionally left white lines in a printout added character!
Yikes! My apologies, I didn’t realize my comment had gotten that long. I need a long-winded checker as well as a spellchecker, I guess.

If that kitten were here mewing like that, I’d ask, “What do you want?” and then pick her up and snorgle her. If she still kept mewing, I’d go check to see if her water bowl and food bowl were empty, if she wanted to play, if her litterbox needed emptying, or whatever else she’d want or need. I’d figure that kitty is trying to tell me something, and it’s up to me to try to figure it out.
Anyone who says cats are aloof, and independent have never lived with one or had a close bond with one as attention demanding like this little kitteh! OR LIKE MINE!

AWWWWWW! Thank you, now I feel all warm and cozy inside! I love talkers, especially cute kids like this one. As for difficult to place shelter kids, here in CNY it seems to be black cats. Why, I don’t know — perhaps the stupid superstition. I love black cats! (heck, I love ALL cats!)
My cat Milky sometimes does this when she wants attention or wants something done (feeding, litter changing, etc.), but her meows really don’t make noise. If she’s really frantic, she’ll make kind of a creaking noise in her throat at the end of her meow. Then, if she finds herself a “toy” like a milk carton ring, she’ll walk up and down the hall, making these very deep, from-the-diaphragm, actual meows. That’s really about the only time she makes noise.
MariaS–my first cat was a black cat. I don’t remember the rest of the litter, but I’m told that the rest of the litter had siamese markings. My mom really wanted me to pick one of them, but she says I was insistent on the black cat.
When I played this both of the bunnies started ear-rotating and hopping around. One was looking for somewhere to hide, and my big rex was looking for the kitty so she could go give it a good ass-kickin’.

I’ve also found other odd noises which get them interested; possibly the most effective on all cats is “pssswssswsss” with the esses as whistling sounds.

Awwww! My Murphy (black cat) is a talky cat. I have “catversations” with him all the time.
This video just makes me feel good all over!
We got a reminder notice from the vet that Murphy’s due for his checkup, and they spelled his name “Murrphy,” which was the cause of much hilarity due to the onomatopoeic quality of the spelling.

I just watched it again, and an observation: The eyes, they must squinch when the mouth opens, because the mouth opens SOOOOO WIIIIIIDE to get that peepy little “Mew” out that there’s no room for the eyes to stay open!
My cat has gotten even more talkative now that she is the only cat. She’s very adamant in telling me .. something.. it usually goes something like this:
