A little ‘Warmer’

You when you’re drinking coffee, and you’re ready for a second cup, and the diner waitress says: "How about a warmer, Hon?" and you go "sure, thanks", so she fills the rest of your somewhat-empty cup with warm coffee? Well this is a little warmer, but in rat form. Just a liiiiiiittle warmer than you were before, right Erika?

Dontmindme

I love the look on Erica’s face here, she’s all, "this is pretty much the ushe."

And let’s not overlook the DELICIOUSLY HIGH B.E.F.!

Thanks to Olive the rattle who "just likes hanging out in there". She fits right in!

Rats in racks! Love it, what a cute little guy…

    also, first post! :D

  2. Kaye says:

Look at the leetle rat nose! I want to kees!

  3. constance says:

    omfg.that’s…that’s…ok I’m speechless.

  4. musicchick2 says:

That tee shirt’s lookin’ a little ratty, don’t'cha think?

Sorry, but as cute as the widdo face is, there’s sumthin’ about the tail and the notion of rats climbing around inside clothes that gives me the willies.

  5. April says:

AWWW!! i could not be more pleased unless the rat had a green hoodie on.. and good luck with that as my rat refuses to wear hers. ^.^

  6. R. Moore says:

Ouch, the last time I hace rats running on my bare chest and shoulders, I leaped up from the little claws. And my SO, who had placed said rat on my bare skin (it was in the summer, and I wasn’t about to wear long sleeves to play with rats), quickly realized that this was a mistake. I’m allergic to rats (though I love them to little rattie bits), so this would leave my chest covered in an itchy red rash…

Anyway, that was more than you all wanted to know, I’m sure.

  7. MelSkunk says:

And countdown to the obligitory, cute-ruining “Eww! A rat, they’re ugly” comment in 3…2…1…

(I myself love the rattie bef!)

  8. Exhaustedlonghorn says:

Aww, it reminds me of my Oreo! *sniff* Although the little claws can be a bit much on *ahem* sensitive skin.

  9. aglee says:

Oh sure, a rat climbs in there, it’s cutesey-wootsie. I do it, and it’s all “harassment” this and “restraining order” that.

  10. Suda Nim says:

Olive *is* coffee with cream. She’s even stirring here.

  11. Beth says:

Ah, my rat’s favorite pastime. *checks shirt* Yep, I can see 3 of them down there in my sweatshirt as of this moment.
    ^_^

  12. Christina says:

So, so cute. I used to let my mouse climb up and relax inside my shirt. Once, I wore a keyhole top and he’d poke his little head through the opening. My mom snapped a picture and we still have it.

  13. acelightning says:

Christina – *PLEASE* send that picture to Meg!

  14. Fish Eye no Miko says:

    Picture 1: “Hey, what’s down there? Oh I think I’ll take a look…”
Picture 2: “Hey! This is nice and warm and cozy…”
Picture 3: “Oh, yeah, thiiis is niiiiiiiice…”
Picture 4: “Hey, you don’t mind if I take a little nap, do ya?”

  15. Fish Eye no Miko says:

Christina, I agree with acelightning, please send that picture to be posted!

  16. Allen says:

Reminds of what my rats used to do, don’t remind me of the scratches.

  17. Throbert McGee says:

LOL! As a former Rat-daddy (who will be a Rat-daddy again someday, either when I have a place to myself or when I find a housemate who isn’t rat-phobic), I identify with everything people are saying in the comments.

Rats are SO cuddly and have so much more personality than the more photogenic hamsters and gerbils… you just have to watch out for the pointy claws! I would encourage my late ratties to snuggle up between my T-shirt and sweatshirt, which kept them nice and warm while sparing me the skin irritation.

  18. elizabeth says:

    aw, adorable!

Olive looks like my rattie Oscar, he likes to do this too.

    more rats on CO! Yeah!

  19. Staticgirl says:

Awww. cute. And Olive is such a great name too. :)

  20. piscespixie says:

    *awwwws*

WATTIE!!! I just wuv teh watties.

  21. polly says:

I used to have a pretty white rat and we let him climb all over us! Gus was a great pet! Till he bit my ear and Mom made us get rid of him.

  22. Mikael says:

The grrl has got really big lips. I like. I don’t like the rat though, looks scary.

  23. pheral says:

    Aw, gorgeous burrowing rat.

‘a warmer’ sounds funny. Over here in the uk they ask if we ‘want a topup’ to our drink.

  24. The Guy Over There says:

I could do without the lips (thisisnotanantirackremarkthisisnotanantirackremark), but the rat’s indeed a pretty lil’ nibbler.

I have a friend who’d phonecam me shots of her with her little darlings on her just to basically say, “Ha ha, look what I have but you don’t!” Curse her. :p

  25. ebee says:

    aglee: LOL!! too funny.

  26. Carlisa says:

I’ve never considered rats cute before seeing this. This is a CUTE rat! I mean it- Look at that visker face!

  27. Theo says:

You know, this would freak the shrieking jibbly #&@%-knots out of an awful lot of people.

I’m OK because my cats protect me.
    ;)

  28. Craig says:

I have four, but only one of them is really prone to shirt-diving. If you’re wearing long sleeves, Roo will run up the sleeve and out the collar. If your cuffs are tight, he’ll try his best to pry and worm his way in.

  29. Christine says:

I love rodents. I don’t love scratches from them though…look at the scrapies on the second picture! Ouch!

  30. anner says:

this almost makes me cry! my Susie-roo (the pianist of an earlier post) used to do this when she got older and less active. i used to be covered in climby-scRATches, but anyway… if i looked down at her, i’d get little rat keeses on my chin. for those of you who haven’t had the pleasure, rat keeses are PERFECT! not slobbery like a dog, not rough and fishy-smelling like a kitteh (though i wouldn’t pass up either one of those either!). just right. and i’m glad to hear i’m not the only one who likes to kees them on the tiny nose.

it’s sooooo amazing to have such a small animal want to be near you and interact with you.

the tails are much easier to love once you’ve see how they use them for balance and maneuvering. it’s neat! and they need them for heat regulation too.

thank you thank you thank you, CO, for another wonderful rattie pic!

  31. sadiesauce says:

I understand that rats are very inteligent, loyal and loving pets. However, this does not take away fromt he fact that this picture is going to give me nightmares.

  32. The Honourable Gladys Anstruther says:

As well as shirt diving I wonder if he is into muff diving? Slaps own wrist and goes and sits on the naughty step.

  33. Theo says:

THGA — oh I think very probably.
    http://www.carylldesigns.com/patterns/FT_winter_in_the_city_AC56.jpg

    (ahem — don’t worry, now)

  34. Redzilla says:

Slight misunderstanding caused this photo series. The rat heard that he could get a “nibble” if he crawled inside the shirt.

  35. Fixings says:

Never mind the rat, let’s just concentrate on that furrrrree animal

  36. zeldapie says:

Oh oh oh! Olive looks extremely prosh in that last pic! I’m in love!

  37. Red says:

Awww, this makes me miss Houdini, whom I had as a little girl. I wanted a rat SO bad, but Mom wouln’t let me get one. I had other furry animals, however, and when one died (or got eaten , *cough* cats…) I had a spare cage. The bookstore was across the street from the pet store, and Mom sent me over to buy cat food… and I sneakily bought a rat!

Mom was mad but let me keep him because she didn’t want to cause a big scene :P

I wasn’t sure what to name him, but I put him in his cage and went over to my friend’s house to spread the word… When we got back, though, he had SOMEHOW escaped. “Houdini” was born, and I figured he would die, as we had two cats.

Imagine my surprise when he was caught two months later, alive and well in the basement :)

Loves some ratties! GREAT pets, and yes, rattie kissies are perfect :)

  38. The Honourable Gladys Anstruther says:

Theo, I didn’t recognise my own initials at first. I thought THGA was a new exclamation like AAGGH.

  39. Theo says:

…sorta like “Teho” sounds like the Battle Cry of the Gerbils.

  40. chumblefuzz says:

Rats! With their delicious velvetty little tails, perfect for stroking and letting hang out of your mouth like spaghetti! I am a fan of this pic set!

  41. Christina says:

Hehe, well I should have mentioned that picture was taken when I was ten. Dante (the mouse) used to like to sit on my shoulder too. Fond memories.

  42. anner says:

chumblefuzz – yes, their tails do feel nice, don’t they? i think people imagine them to be totally bare and , i dunno, slimy or something?but the peachfuzz is lovely, especially when they’re bebehs.

  43. chumblefuzz says:

mmm. baby rat tail nuzzlins. *drifts off into pleasant daydreams*

  44. Cattails says:

Okay, I’m converted after seeing all the wonderful kissable ratsies on CO. I neeeeed a rattie friend and rattie kishes. Do ratties do okay by themselves or do you really need to have multiples for companionship?

  45. nermalkitty says:

ok all you guys are weird. but i luv reading all the comments and i can’t stop. a friend told me once that everybody is weird in their own way. guess so. but i luv all furry fangy clawy critters. specially kitties. comment on co luvers. comment on.

  46. anner says:

Cattails- rats absolutely need to be kept in pairs or they will go batty with boredome and lonelyness. plus they really like to snuggle up together when sleeping. you can have same sex pairs, or fixed boy/girl(yes, you can get them fixed! i always imagine that they must call in a tiny little vet.)

  47. Cattails says:

    Thanks anner.

  48. casper says:

My rat Freddy likes to climb inside my jacket when we go to the pet store to get food and treats, of course we take the bus and subway up there, so little rattie nose peeks out every so often, sometimes he sits on my shoulder and watches out the window.
Oh and yes Freddy has razor sharp claws, hence he recived the name of the horror movie guy with sharp knives on his hands. I put a stone in his cage in hopes he would weardown the points, instead he uses it to hone them to razor sharp points.

  49. wolfwhocriedboy says:

    Awwwwhhh…a-ouchiessss ;)

I’ve been a rat-parent and I used to love to let them run around in my hoodie but they do leave marks with those needly little toeses of theirs.

*sigh* Miss them. I’m so bummed that they are illegal in Alberta. They are the bestest little petses.

  50. Robbie says:

Erica, you must be very tickle resistant. My ratties tickle the heck out of me when they crawl over my bare skin.

  51. lauowolf says:

    Wolfwhocriedboy-
    remember,
    when they outlaw pet rats
only outlaws will have pet rats.

  52. Theo says:

    [snicker!]

  53. pistache268 says:

I loves the paw in the last picture :)

  54. Arvay says:

Hm. I loves me a squishy rat as much as the next girl, but CLAWS! My rats never learned the difference between Summer and Winter. Winter means mama is all covered up and it’s quite okay to use her as a human jungle gym. Summer means you may NOT launch yourself off the top of the bookshelf and sink your eighteen tiny nails into her exposed leg.

  55. chelonianmobile says:

Awww! Makes me miss my two ratties. I love the way the tail is patterned just like the fur!

  56. Another Angela says:

“sorta like “Teho” sounds like the Battle Cry of the Gerbils”
    LMAO

None of my five rattie boys is a shirt diver either. Olive is a gorgeous girlie. Rat tails are the greatest when they are waggling!

  57. David says:

and at least we cant say the rat was forced into this position etc etc etc and cruelty to the animal etc etc etc.. adorable rodentia there… and yes a rats ‘n racks catagory would be amuesing…

  58. gg says:

Aww, too cute. I love the “more rat,” less “rack” content of the photo as well :)

  59. Subhangi says:

LOL!!! Cute face, though I’m freaked at the idea of a rat scurrying around my shoulders.

Oh, and we have a cleanup on aisle 28253605, Teho.

  60. Subhangi says:

Wow, Teho. Looks like you already took care of it! You are teh genie.

  61. Cat with Hat says:

    Wow! Delicious!

  62. lauowolf says:

Would you care for a rat?

    Oh, sorry.
    Is Siberian hamster.

  63. Sheilagh says:

    What is “ushe”??

  64. Theo says:

Sheilagh — um, short for “usual” I think.

  65. anner says:

David – maybe nobody’s being physically cruel to this rat…but isn’t she being *exploited*?! when she posed for these pics, she probably had no idea they would be posted on the interweb. now everyone can see her in embarrassing proximity to a rack, which raises all kinds of questions about her proclivities. her rattie friends could blackmail and/or shun her! i, for one, am shocked and appalled. for shame.

unless she’s not a real rat, and just a knitted one.

  66. Rink says:

grossss keep rodents off! :( squirrels are the only cute rodent

  67. Jklein says:

I have adorable little rats at home… one big, two babies. so warm, adventurous & fun. Trivia time… did you know if you are allergic to cats you are also allergic to rats and rabbits? I learned this when knitting an angora scarf for my cat and rats. Bummer.

I agree, we need a rats & racks section. I’ll go home and work on a cute pix.

  68. anne says:

Haven’t read any of the comments, so I’m probably repeating.

I LOVE these photos! I grew up with rat pets, and they so totally dive down your shirt! And then they come up looking much like this bebe who has come up all whiskers and beady eyes.

    Excelente.

  69. Liz says:

    Rats n Racks! I love it=)

  70. Mary says:

Finally, proof that no one is grabbing unsuspecting pets and stuffing them into the rack in order to get onto C.O. The pets (in this case, rat) are putting themselves into the category. Excellent!!

  71. Rafael says:

“Wheres the cat, I must hide, wheres the cat, I must hide, wheres the cat, I must hide. Hey psst, you, is the cat gone?”

  72. trin says:

    Anner, a knitted rat… how ridiculous…NOT:

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/trinlayk/365097108/

  73. Lil says:

I know he’s not a cat as such, but he could still go into the cat’n'racks grouping, no?

  74. anner says:

trin – holy crap! that’s amazing. such product cuteness. so many likenesses of rats are goofy and cartoon-like…but this one captures the general cuteness in a nice, simple, cuddly shape. you have tewtelly made my night.

(my comment was a referenct to somebody’s tongue -in-cheek comment about the possible photoshopedness of the husky puppy stack of a few weeks ago)

    yay ratties! (boo Nuffs)

  75. Suda Nim says:

Could we put this under “Cats ‘n’ Racks for bad spellers”?

  76. tsaiah says:

    *snugglies whee!*

Lol, Suda Nim…hmm, how ’bout just “Rats ‘n’ Cacks”? The world can always use more euphemisms.

  77. Ree says:

Olive is most deliciously cute. :D

Now, I don’t mind when my neutered ratty boys do that. It’s when the in-tact boys dive down and do a little scent marking while they’re at it. *grumble*

  78. Kay says:

If you too can appreciate the lives of non-humans, please stop purchasing products that are tested on animals (think Abu Ghraib – billions of animal lives – style). Products that do not torture animals make it very clear. “Kiss My Face” is one of the most affordable.

  79. Kitteh Citeh says:

Olive!! Olive U!! I had two ratties just like her!! I miss them so much!!! WAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!! More rattie pix pleeeease!!! Is anyone else out there a member of Debbie the Rat Lady’s Rat Fan Club in Chico, CA??? I was when I had my six ratties. WAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!! Miss furry little housebroken ladies who would sit in (excuse please) bra for long hours and watch movies with me—IF I brought the popcorn. When ratties have to GO they get wiggly just like people and then you let them go to “Ratties Room” and no prob. My ratties were so smart they learned to work together. One day paper towel roll fall over and ratties say “this is ratastic!!!” and they pull whole roll in thru bars of big three-floor cage and stuff in their spacious bedroom suite. When I come home I see three cute noses-SO PROSH!!-friend LOL ’til wet undies!!! Ratties not come out for days–so warm and SNORGLY!!! So then we “accidentally” let paper towel fall over and we see ratties working together to get p.t. First rattie pull p.t. in through bars and second rattie pull towel up ramp to second shelf of cage. Third rattie run down an pull p.t. up third ramp to spacious suite and second rattie run up & help third rattie to stuff suite! SWEEEEET!!! Meanwhile, first rattie pulling in more p.t and it goes on & on (just like this post-sorry) until entire roll is stuffed in bedroom-and every time we sacrifice new roll of p.t. for EXTREME cuteness & smartness, ratties NEVER tear roll of p.t-always in one continuous roll!!! Amazing yes!!! Rat Lady expert say this IS really amazing–ratties taught selves how to co-operate and get p.t. job done to have extreme cute, soft, fluffy time in X-large suite!!! Very intelligent!! Three guys with beer not get this done!!! HA HA!! JOKE JOKE JOKE!!! About tails & leetle pink toes & claws-EVERYONE go down to pet store tomorrow and pet tail (with the grain-not against) and in 1/2 hour will see tails nice, clean & soft & ratties use tails for work and caress you with them. OOOOH!! Extreme CO and Warm Soft Time. When I get ratties (always three girls-then if one die-WAAAAAHHHH!! still two pals and you can add-a-rat girl and all friends. You can do this forever and ratties and Mommies never lonely) I go outside to lake and get a few rocks size of pita bread-put one in front of door, one in front of food etc. so ratties walk on rock-self-manicure!! Also at movie time ratties let me use emory board on tiny nails!! SO PROSH EH? Favorite rattie”Ratalie Hood” always come out and fix my hair the way she like, take care of my cuticles for free, check nostrils for boogies and check my ears too!!! SO SO PROSH!!! GIVE CHILLS!! Ratties very clean and neat-wash selves like kittehs, smell like corn. They DO have an enzyme on claws that cause allergic scritchies on some peeps. Too bad! Sorry this so loooong-but I love and know a lot about the little squidgies. Ask ???’s and I can answer or tell you how to find Rat Lady expert. Pleeeze kees all your lettle rat-a-tats for me!!! Send more pix!!! >>:< < <3 <3 <3 from Kitteh Citeh

  80. The Honourable Gladys Anstruther says:

I don’t have a rack, being a bloke, anyhoo I once had a mouse put up my sleeve and it had a crap. So sod this for a lark.

  81. Nancy says:

My rats like to stick their noses in my nostrils. :(

  82. Andrea says:

my rat desdemona used to love doing that! I had a sweater w/lots of holes in it (you know, for that waif-punk look?), and she used to stick her little face out through the holes.

  83. Theo says:

LOL @ Honourable Gladys. Two things are abundantly clear:
    1) You’re English
    2) Rats? Not really your favorite.

  84. anner says:

My rats also like to stick their nose in my nostrils. :)

  85. anner says:

oh, and one time when she was a bebeh, Susie tried to burrow into my belly-button!

    :) :) :)

  86. Vicki says:

I was just taking a drink of soda when I saw the first picture and I seriously almost spit it out! This is so funny!!

  87. guineapiggin9 says:

The rat has a cute face, but the tail kinda gross. Anyway…this rattie is perty cute!

  88. Lea says:

How long must us rattie lovers wait for our coveted “RATS AND RACKS” designation?

  89. Annie says:

Hey Molly Ringwald, stop molesting that poor rattie!!

  90. Theo says:

I *theenk* ees thee otherr way ‘rround, Annee.

  91. Barny says:

Absolute spitting image of my rat, Amber. Tres cute :)

  92. Theresa says:

What a great set of photos! I so love my rats. The ones we have left are not shirt divers. But we did have one rat named Rocky who definately loved to perch in cleavage. He was nicknamed “Uniboob” if he was shirt diving my boys or “Third-boob” if he was perched on my bra. Thanks for showing rats in a cute light.

  93. Hannah says:

Hey, this should be in the cats in racks place! Other thingies have gotten in there! Like.. that bird.. and stuff.
