For some reason I’m getting a very Due South vibration from this (probably because Safety Pup’s name is Monty)–there’s either a piney whiff of Canadian propriety from the idea of dogs in seatbelts or I’m suffering a bout of inflamed tangentitis.

I dont know if i really agree with those. because what if you were in an accident (yes i know thats the point of them) but what if you were knocked unconscience and your pet was tied in there… i dunno i guess they are sort of contriversal

toughbubble, not any more controversial than a seatbelt for people. What if you were in an accident and you yourself weren’t belted in? Better neither you nor your pup become a projectile within the car in an impact.

My whole family makes fun of my for buckling my dog into the car seat. Now I can show them this and let them know that I’m not the only one.
There are two very good reasons to use safety belts on your doggies, people…
#1 = To keep the doggies safe
#2 = To keep YOU safe. A 50lb dog flying around during a car accident would not be fun.
Toughbubble – I wish these were available when my doggie was around. We were returning from a weekend in the Poconos and he was curled up in the hatch of my Mustang (with the back seat down, don’t worry, it wasn’t a trunk). I was cut off by a psycho motorcycle going down a huge hill on Rt 80 and had to slam on the brakes, and he ended up hitting the windshield. Fortunately, he was fine (just a killer headache, I’m sure); the vet didn’t even think he had a concussion. I sure do miss him, too!
Plus, if you have a dog who cannot quite be trusted to stay put, these are a great idea even when you’re not in the midst of having an accident.

Regarding the seatbelt for dogs:
I was in an accident where my SUV rolled over and my dog, who has sitting in the passenger seat, was ejected. She hit the ground running and took off into the woods. I had to go to the hospital for stitches and we didn’t find her until the next morning. She had a cut on her leg that required staples, but was otherwise fine. We were both very lucky. The vet who patched her up recommended that I use seatbelt harnesses in the future.
So is Safety Pup one of those guys who goes to elementary schools and gives presentations about being good citizens? (Did anyone else out there see the Safety Guys skit on that “Higgins Boys and Gruber” concert show that was on Comedy Central ages ago?)
I’ve got one dog who will tolerate the safety harness and another who won’t — she just wiggles out. So I’ll have to plan my accidents very carefully to have the right dog in the truck cab at the time.
And, if they’re in the truck bed, they’re in a CRATE, which is STRAPPED DOWN with one of those winching belts.
Welcome to Texas, land of the idiots with loose dogs in their truck beds.
(Actually, I just had an accident last week in a parking lot where I scraped against another car while backing out. I got stuck so tight against it that two of the restaurant guys had to literally lift the end of my truck and swing it around to free me. $1500 of damage to her, none to me. No dogs were involved)

I’m so sorry about the car accidents Peeps.
Another risk is your dog opening the windows. My dog puts her paws on the armrest where the window button is and, zhzhzhzhzh, down goes the window. I lock the windows when she’s in the car.
The worst is dogs loose in truck beds. I’ve seen the results. I worked at an animal hospital for 6 years. The most ironic case happened to a great pet owner of a great (and expensive) dog. He got it as a puppy, brought it in for all it’s shots, etc. Big $pender. We always scolded him for putting his pup in the back of his truck. Then he spent more $$$ on spaying her, etc. Picked her up to take her home. Put her in the back of the truck . . . . . . . . . . ..
He *did* get a new puppy and start all over. He *didn’t* put it in the back of his truck.
Pyrit, I feel your pain. I was driving home one afternoon and saw a guy in front of me take a turn a little too hard and his absolutely gorgeous rottweiler slid across the truck bed and toppled out into the lane where there was oncoming traffic. He survived the tumble but couldn’t get out of the roadway in time. I tell the story in more graphic detail to anyone I know who thinks it’s all right to leave their dog loose in the truck bed. Even if you *know* your dog will never jump out the window or out of the truck bed or into your lap when you’re driving, you never know what can happen, ergo always err on the side of caution. Like Safety Pup Monty! We sell those seatbelt harnesses at my work and they are a Hot Item! My dogs don’t tolerate them but that’s okay…they have a strapped down kennel in the backseat they ride in when I take them anyplace.

I had a dog friend years ago, and whenever she and I went to the dog park (or my office on the weekend), I made sure to strap her in as well as possible with the lap and shoulder belt. Her owners made fun of me, but I didn’t care.
That Christmas, I bought her a proper pup harness… and she rode in safety ever after. Her owners still laughed about it, but they dutifully strapped her in every time.
