Why yes, my nostrils ARE as big as my eyes.

by Meg on October 13, 2006

Why do you ask? [Looks away disapprovingly]

Not_amused_1

Please. Do not bother us.

[sips tea, then calls disapproving bunny friends on the phone to chat]

Not_amused_2

Awes job, Rock Lobstah.

Oh hey, the Wumps! Gotta look this up…

2 Kathryn 10.13.06 at 6:12 pm

What ARE those? Some sort of giant guinea pig??

3 Theo 10.13.06 at 6:14 pm

OK so this is what I meant…
http://www.amazon.com/Wump-World-Bill-Peet/dp/0395311292

…though I know they’re actually capybaras:
http://www.rebsig.com/capybara/

4 Michele 10.13.06 at 6:15 pm

omg a capybara! I saw one in a zoo once. I had a neighbor when I was a kid, and he had 3 pugs, and he called them his capybaras. Whenever he would take them to the park, he would set them loose and cackle “run! run, my little capybabras!!!” yeah I think he had rotted his brain using too much pot and acid when he was younger… capybaras are much cuter than pugs

5 Redzilla 10.13.06 at 6:17 pm

I am overwhelmed with the urge to apologize for my very existence and back away slowly. (One does not turn one’s buttocks toward the disapproving capybara.)

6 Emc^2 10.13.06 at 6:19 pm

Nah… They’re RUSes…

(Well, they _are_ …)

7 rainbow 10.13.06 at 6:19 pm

god/dess sure had fun creating this little creature. very silly/cute indeed.

8 Theo 10.13.06 at 6:20 pm

I don’t believe they exist.

9 Mia 10.13.06 at 6:24 pm

Emc2…ha ha ha!! Although these are MUCH cuter than those in the movie…

11 Redzilla 10.13.06 at 6:29 pm

As you wish, Theo.

12 Theo 10.13.06 at 6:29 pm

Teej — OMG that PAW. Never mind the tongue.

13 Kyle 10.13.06 at 6:34 pm

Snout-to-eye ratio?

14 EMH 10.13.06 at 6:35 pm

AIEE! Capybaras are my favorite! Thank you thank you thank you!!!!

15 fridgedicebunny 10.13.06 at 6:36 pm

I disapprove of your pug slight, Michele.

16 Thalia 10.13.06 at 6:37 pm

Yay! Capybaras!

An ex of mine, who had some sort of magical psychic link with any and all animals was at a zoo once when he came across a capybara who had somehow escaped from its pen. The poor thing looked rather scared, so when it came over to him (as all animals did, since they just *knew*) he patted it on the head reassuringly, which it loved. A couple minutes later, though, a zoo employee found them and said (and this is a true quote) “Sir, step AWAY from the capybara!”

Poor little guy.

17 sass 10.13.06 at 6:40 pm

“Deeeeeeewy Bewuvved…”

These guys need miters, scepters, and terrible lisps to complete the disapproving appearance.

18 Aubrey 10.13.06 at 6:41 pm

T: Capy-baroo?

19 Maureen 10.13.06 at 6:44 pm

ROUSes, Emc^2, ROUS.

21 E. Collison 10.13.06 at 6:52 pm

I really cannot type well.

23 Henshu 10.13.06 at 6:53 pm

Ahh! I love Capybaras! Ever since I learned of their existance, the real life ROUS’s..
I would sooo run into a Fire Swamp to snuggle with one.

24 Dewi CasGwent 10.13.06 at 6:53 pm

Why is it with tea drinking and disapproval, tea drinkers can be nice and socialable.

dewi

25 acm 10.13.06 at 6:56 pm

hah! I immediately thought of Wump World too, although you’d have to put these guys on a diet before they’d be as cute as wumps.

26 Lola 10.13.06 at 7:00 pm

In 6th grade I wrote a story about Cappy the Capybara, and her family. Now I couldn’t tell you a single fact about capybaras, except they’re some of the largest members of the rodent family. And their nostrils are as big as their eyes!

27 Aoide 10.13.06 at 7:00 pm

Capybaras, the masters of the ‘disapproving’ look. Also the world’s largest rodents, native to Venezuela.

28 suda nim 10.13.06 at 7:04 pm

“Suh, we would LIKE her to get eaten by the sharks at this time.”

29 Jenne 10.13.06 at 7:05 pm

That is a really.. funny-looking.. thing.

looks a little like a horse in that front-on shot..?

Weird.

30 Redzilla 10.13.06 at 7:08 pm

Dewi CasGwent: as a tea drinker, I disapprove of your suggestion that tea drinkers are nice and sociable. Harrumpf.

Also, I disapprove of your user name.

31 EMH 10.13.06 at 7:11 pm

Thalia, as if they could do any harm!

My boyfriend has the same ‘affliction’. The minute he moved in with me my dogs/cats had a new ‘mommy’. Grr.

32 NebraskaErin 10.13.06 at 7:19 pm

Although, unlike the ROUSes, I don’t believe these are just dwarves in costume.

Where’s the capy’s monocle? HMMM?? AND WHERE IS HIS PIPE?!

That’s it. The butler’s fired.

Speak: I love you.

I tried real hard to Google one of the Monty Python letters of complaint so I could post it here, but I couldn’t find any.

So just imagine that there’s a Monty Python letter here.

Signed,
Brig. Gen. Harry Winslow (Mrs.)

37 Aubrey 10.13.06 at 7:30 pm

Also, judging from Picture #1, these caps must be listening to ‘Hoochie Coochie Man’.

Muddy Waters, see.

43 Theo 10.13.06 at 7:50 pm

44 Aubrey 10.13.06 at 8:02 pm

T., sweaters at least will keep you up to scratch. Sugar or lemon? Milk?

45 Clotypus 10.13.06 at 8:02 pm

TEH CAPYBARA!!!!!!!!!!

Very gentle, LARGE, water faring rodentia :) Special lil’ guys.

Also, if anyone remembers, The Tick’s pet ‘dog’ was a capybara :P

46 Redzilla 10.13.06 at 8:05 pm

Okay, folks, get to ’shopping. What I’d like to see is capy is Pic#2 as the Sphynx, set against a backdrop of pyramids and de Nile.

47 Jennifer Ludicke 10.13.06 at 8:07 pm

Are those ROUS’s??!!

48 Jessica 10.13.06 at 8:16 pm

I named my son after “farmboy” and no NOT “Roberts” – maybe I should get him a capy!

49 jenn 10.13.06 at 8:18 pm

okay these capa things are too cute. I’ve decided that after smiling, complete disapproval is my favorite animal expression :)

Speaking of bunny disapproval (see link), cinnamon had me in stitches–especially the one about the hippies.

50 Renee 10.13.06 at 8:31 pm

This makes my horrible day!!! I love capybaras!!!!

51 Melly 10.13.06 at 8:36 pm

Here is a cute capybara kids’ book by Bill Peet:
http://www.amazon.com/Capyboppy-Bill-Peet/dp/0395383684/sr=8-3/qid=1160771600/ref=pd_bbs_3/002-8792091-8362469?ie=UTF8
His family had one named “Capyboppy” as a pet, and he wrote a book about it.

52 lurkertype 10.13.06 at 8:36 pm

Whoda thunk ROUS could be so cute, even as they Disapprove?

Also, the Peeps have me laughing again.

53 bunnyfriend 10.13.06 at 8:37 pm

There’s a park in Rio de Janeiro that is filled with Capybaras and feral cats. It’s a pretty amazing sight. My dad has some photos… must get them from him… Capybaras and Calico friends!

54 DredPirate 10.13.06 at 8:43 pm

56 Kar 10.13.06 at 8:55 pm

Huh, I thought it was a nutria. And them’s supposedly good eating.

57 ceebs 10.13.06 at 9:17 pm

Is CO extremely slow today or is it my work computer AND my home computer?

I thought they might be nutria too, I was gonna run away skeered.
Those nostricles are kinda cute.

58 persimmontree 10.13.06 at 9:24 pm

I lofe capybaras!
They tweet:
http://www.capybara.com/capybaras/capy.au

59 Lauri 10.13.06 at 9:38 pm

The video under Theo’s link, which shows the entire herd with babies playing in the water, is simply awesome!

The variety of life on this planet is breathtaking.

60 Lauri 10.13.06 at 9:40 pm

Oh! Persimmontree….in the video, I thought it was birds tweeting! It’s the capys! How cool! No wonder guinea pigs and capys look similar…and sound similar! Thanks for the …um…heads up! ;)

Hey, you can tell by watching the video, too, that they use smell and hearing to tell what’s going on in their environment….as much or more than sight….well, I guess you can tell that just by looking at them!

61 Clotypus Strikes Again 10.13.06 at 10:01 pm

LMAO EMC^2!

62 UrsulaV 10.13.06 at 10:18 pm

Weird Fact: Back in the day, the Catholic church decided that capybara were honorary fish.

See, if you were a Catholic in South America, and not near the coasts, you couldn’t get fish on Friday very easily, but you did have access to capybara, which lived mostly in the water, so they figured hey, good enough.

63 Jennifer 10.13.06 at 10:20 pm

I just love capybaras.

64 pinkle 10.13.06 at 10:21 pm

He looks like Clement Freud

65 suda nim 10.13.06 at 10:22 pm

Okay, so pikas aren’t rodents, but they can still give the cappies a run for their money, soundwise: http://www.cmiae.org/trek-pika.htm

And BTW, “Sir, step away from the capybara” is STILL making me laugh!

66 Piggalette 10.13.06 at 10:38 pm

Very, extremely, weirdly cute. Love it!

67 wolfwhocriedboy 10.13.06 at 10:38 pm

LOVE the capy but I am now newly in love with the disaproving bunny!

Thanks for the link Meg.

68 AlbertaGirl 10.13.06 at 10:42 pm

Hooray! I loves me some capybaras. And I can’t tell you how pleased I am to find other fans of the mighty Speak! One of my favourite lines from the Speak episodes…

Tick: Carmelita, guess what? Speak’s not a dog at all. He’s the world’s biggest rat!

69 Brak_Silverbone 10.13.06 at 11:14 pm

CAPYBARAS!! I’ll have to tell my friend in Japan. She loves capybaras!

70 Anna 10.13.06 at 11:24 pm

Holy CAPYBARA…! Those animals actually exist?! Someone up there has a twisted sense of humour.

(Hmmph, and I actually find them somewhat attractive.)

71 army_kitten 10.13.06 at 11:27 pm

Redzilla, here is a Capybara Sphinx per your request:

http://feminemesis.org/cabybara_sphinx.jpg

For some reason my eyes are reading “Capybara”, but my brain keeps going “Chupacabra”. Maybe I should worry.

72 Ponygirl 10.13.06 at 11:41 pm

Yay!!! My Favs! I love wumps/capybaras!

73 Aubrey 10.14.06 at 12:15 am

Wow, ArmyK. X Files flashback – that was a creepy episode.

Love the CapySphnix. One day I too will LEARN HOW TO PHOTOSHOP.

A note, while we’re on the topic of architectural feats – there is a cathedral in Laon, France, where – in addition to the marvy sculptures of saints and angels on the outside – there are sculptures of the oxen which helped drag the blocks of granite and marble to the building site, to commerate their good work, the poor creatures.

74 jaypo 10.14.06 at 12:39 am

I look at dems and think “Ooomph.”

75 jaypo 10.14.06 at 1:00 am

“For some reason my eyes are reading “Capybara”, but my brain keeps going “Chupacabra”.”

ArmyK, me too…:-/ I even looked up pictures of the vile mystery creatures to see if there was any resemblance, but it’s just the name. I’d ruther think about the capys.

76 suda nim 10.14.06 at 1:48 am

A capybara walks into a bar.

The bartender says “Hey, why the long face?”

77 Lauri 10.14.06 at 1:56 am

Bwahaha, that’s funny. And I love the Capy Sphinx.

78 suda nim 10.14.06 at 2:16 am

79 Theo 10.14.06 at 2:19 am

82 budak 10.14.06 at 2:46 am

The disapproving bunnies are much cuter…. although on the lady’s blog, she has a video of a pelican eating a pigeon alive: http://www.birdchick.com/2006/10/holy-crap.html#comments

83 suda nim 10.14.06 at 2:47 am

Maybe I’ll be here ANOTHER SEVEN DAYS! Did you think of that, MISter Smarty-drawers Theo? HUH?

84 Aubrey 10.14.06 at 2:48 am

‘Nim, – wait: maybe T. didn’t come here for abuse. I think he came here for an arguement.

85 Aubrey 10.14.06 at 2:49 am

And an argument. That too.

86 suda nim 10.14.06 at 2:50 am

I’d say something, but after double-posting, I’m afwaid.

87 suda nim 10.14.06 at 2:57 am

By the way, I passed on the “Step away from the capybara” line to my mother and mentioned the ROUS commection, just for laughs. She’s always loved capybaras. And wombats. She (a retired physiology professor) replied that she used to assign “The Princess Bride” as extra credit for a study of excess growth hormone secretion in Andre the Giant. Actually, any excuse would have done, she said.

88 brownamazon 10.14.06 at 3:49 am

I’m quite sure I read somewhere that in the 17th or 18th century, the pope declared that capybaras were “fish”, to placate the indigenous South American people the Spanish were trying to convert to Catholicism. Seems capybara was a staple of the native people’s diet and they weren’t too happy about having to give it up on Fridays. Seriously, I could not make this stuff up.

89 AuntieMame 10.14.06 at 3:54 am

“I think he came here for an argument.”

Ah yes, you want room 12A, Just along the corridor.

90 designerwhite 10.14.06 at 4:00 am

They’re closely related to GUINEA-PIGS!!! and there used to be even larger versions of them that are now extinct!

My student film featured their ancestors.

Shut your festering gob, you t!t! Your type really makes me puke, you vacuous, coffee-nosed, maloderous, pervert!!!

92 BunRab 10.14.06 at 4:33 am

I remember reading about the 1500 lb. extinct rodent a couple years back.

I had a professor of philosophy/logic back in the early ’70’s, who instead of using “A” and “B” in all his examples (such as “if all As are Bs, and all Bs are Cs, then all As are Cs”) would use wombats and camelopards (the old name for giraffes). I don’t remember him ever using capybaras, though – too bad.

93 Viola 10.14.06 at 5:21 am

Dear Sir,

I wish to complain on the strongest possible terms about the previous posts on this webpage about the capybara who drinks tea. Some of my best friends are capybaras, and only a few of them are disapproving.

Yours faithfully,
Brigadier Sir Charles Arthur Strong (Mrs.)

94 Denise in Nebraska 10.14.06 at 6:43 am

I would like to politely point out the incredible distance that appears to exist between this creature’s nostrils and mouth. One would need to travel by plane, to get from one to another! How does this little guy smell his food?! Zee nostrils are in Los Angeles, and zee mouth is in New York City. This is both cute, and sad. What was the good Lord thinking?? Why are the nostrils larger than the mouth area? What are this creature’s extra-curricular activities? Flower-smelling, perhaps??

95 Martha in Washington 10.14.06 at 6:49 am

Did anyone notice the capy in the background of the first pic? So disapproving that he chooses to completely ignore the whole situation! Another cuppa, please.

96 suda nim 10.14.06 at 7:33 am

Viola — LOL! Literally! I have startled my dog.

97 Zorbs 10.14.06 at 12:47 pm

I must send this to my friend, who owns the domain http://www.capybara.org

98 army_kitten 10.14.06 at 12:48 pm

Aubrey: thank you for reminding me! I forget that, even though my brain does take weird paths all on its own, my having seen every single episode of the X-files definitely adds to the effect.

jaypo: I’m really glad there’s no resemblance. I don’t think anyone could ever think a Chupacabra was cute. Well, maybe its mother… But then, being a terrifying mythical creature, it might not even HAVE a mother. Hm.

99 chet's momma 10.14.06 at 1:00 pm

Heee….love the posts. suda, are you STILL here??? If you are camping out on CO for over a week, you should regale us with continuous stories, jokes, quotes, phrases and parallelograms!

I just LOVE these and all capys! In the video that Theo posted way up top, the whole herd that is playing in the water hears something that bothers them. They all stop at once, ears on point and nostrils at the ready! Maybe the nostrils are tiny cannons….looks like could shoot 50 calibers!

106 Subhangi 10.14.06 at 1:11 pm

Capybaras! LOL!

They’re the biggest members of the rodent family, I believe – unless of course you count in that were-rabbit that was creating havoc in English countrysides a few weeks ago.

107 Lauri 10.14.06 at 1:12 pm

insert “they” in the appropriate place.

(why o why can’t I do that the first time?)

108 Lauri 10.14.06 at 1:12 pm

Hi, Su!!! We was postin’ at the same time! WOOOT!

109 Rachel 10.14.06 at 1:22 pm

LOL!! You can almost hear that first one going “Hmppff! Ignoramuses!”

So cute!

And DEFINITELY cuter than Pugs!

110 AlbertaGirl 10.14.06 at 2:19 pm

“I have startled my dog.”

Yes Suda, but have you confused your cat?

111 Theo 10.14.06 at 2:23 pm

Poor bewildered beasts…

112 Pillow 10.14.06 at 2:28 pm

Yup yup, Subhangi’s right, they’re the largest memeber of the rodent family.

;_; In some countries, these guys are actually EATEN! What kind of world are we living in?

113 Theo 10.14.06 at 2:29 pm

…a hungry one?

114 michellemybelle 10.14.06 at 2:30 pm

Someone should make little monocles or pince-nez for them – that would make them look even more disapproving. And waistcoats. Definitely waistcoats.

115 newlee 10.14.06 at 3:30 pm

cute capys but now i’m OWNED by cinnamon the disapproving bun. thanks to CO, i am looking forward to my life of enslavement.

116 Lauri 10.14.06 at 4:31 pm

I just read a disturbing book where people were roasting guinea pigs, too.

And, cows! Can you imagine? :P

117 little miao 10.14.06 at 4:48 pm

That’s dreadful, Lauri. You’d better get back to cooking the big birthday dinner (did you mention beef?!). Happy Birthday to Mr. Lauri.

118 Subhangi 10.14.06 at 4:52 pm

Oi! Mr.Lauri’s berfday? Happy b’day to him!

119 Lex 10.14.06 at 5:33 pm

My friend went to Peru and lived on a diet of potatoes and guinea pigs. Apparently they were really salty. Capybaras are cute as hell, but I’d eat one, given the chance.

120 Pillow 10.14.06 at 6:33 pm

lol I do wonder what they taste like….

121 Bear 10.14.06 at 6:36 pm

These this aren’t cute at all. When I first saw capybaras at the Memphis Zoo, I was actually a little scared. I think you would get that feeling any time you saw something that is WAY bigger than it should be. Do you think a ten foot tall kitten would be as cute as a giant guinea pig?

122 GeorgiaGirl 10.14.06 at 6:41 pm

/OT alert/

Kudos to Meg again for the latest media notice!!!

I just got my latest PC Magazine in the mail (cover date Nov. 7, 2006), and CO is included in their feature story titled “The Most Amazing Sites of 2006.”

We’re under the subhead called “Lifestyles, Entertainment, and Fun” and here’s what the reviewer had to say:

“They haven’t done any serious scientific studies yet, but it might actually be possible for this site to make you die of cuteness. Cute Overload has your daily dose of adorable widdle puppies, kitties, duckies, and more. (Can a squid be cute? You’ll have to judge for yourself.) It might just be the only thing to get you through those rough workdays–or the final annoying straw that sends your fist through your monitor.”

[Sorry if this has already been posted; I haven't had a chance to read all of the most recent threads--but I *did* at least search for PC Mag and came up empty.]

/Return to capybaras/

123 Lizzy 10.14.06 at 9:17 pm

Eeee! Capybaras! Ginormous ubersnuggly guinea pig ancestors with disapproving stares! It’s like a My Size Barbie in grumpy snugglable form! *glomps the capybaras*

124 Thalia 10.14.06 at 9:35 pm

I was Googling capybaras and zoos in my area when I came across this news item from August—

“(CBS4) FITCHBURG—A capybara, classified as the largest rodent in the world, has escaped from a petting zoo in Fitchburg. The large, beaver-like creature isn’t shy. It popped up in one homeowner’s backyard this week.

‘My dog started going crazy we looked outside it was right over there,’ said Frank McDonald, an eyewitness. ‘It was about this high off the ground, it sort of looked like a juiced up gerbil, a really big rodent from around here.’ “

Looks like they have a habit of wandering!

Also:

“Lunenberg Animal Control Officer Kathy Comeau tells the Worcester Telgram & Gazette the rodent is not dangerous at all.”

“Not dangerous at all”? That’s a pretty strong affirmation of the capybara’s gentle nature–usually animal control officers are *very* careful to make sure people have a healthy respect for a wild critter.

ITS SO WOMBAT-LIKE

126 suda nim 10.14.06 at 10:23 pm

Wow…only posting for a week and already I have a public. The peer pressure is starting to hurt my eardrums.

Let’s see…story…my mom, in her physiology lectures, also used to use Douglas Adams’ line about much of the human mind being taken up by penguins.

When she retired, her students got her a Precious Moments nurse figurine (nursing was her specialty). Now, OK, we do cute, but come ON!

It is banished to the back bathroom. I’m amazed she has it on display at all.

They hit the cute right on the schnozzle! :)

misscrisp! Such a cute pic!

I’m happy everytime I look at these Doods!

GeorgieGirl, thanks for the heads up on PC’s article. Aren’tya *glad* to be here? ;-)

147 Thomas 10.15.06 at 3:46 pm

Giant Hamster!!!

148 Theo 10.15.06 at 10:18 pm

MissCrisp — I recognize that, it’s cat yoga. It’s the feline Sun Salute. What you do is, you bend your body into whatever shape the sunbeam takes, in its path across the floor. Informally known as “catching rays.”

149 GeorgiaGirl 10.16.06 at 12:04 am

jaypo–

Am I glad to be here? Well, as George Burns was fond of saying, “At my age I’m glad to be anywhere…”

But oh YES, I *am* glad to be here, resplendent in my pudding- and nuffingham-proof togs.

150 Theo 10.16.06 at 12:16 am

“Pudding-proof?”
The girl doth tempt her fate. (Yeth, she doth.)

151 misscrisp 10.16.06 at 1:37 am

Oh sí T…and lucky we are to have them rays wherefore to catch in October (or something literate to that effect). Catten in sunshine. Dreamy.
When Ruble and I lived in Brooklyn, we often practiced special yoga I call “Pi Wi Fi” — what you do is, you hold your laptop up towards a window and then simultaneously tilt and rotate in order to secure the best Pi(rated) wireless signal. Hold pose.
yoga: it’s more than hippie/yuppie exercise ☺

152 Aubrey 10.16.06 at 1:39 am

Tempt the girl doth
She doeth, by my troth
Get out thy pot
And stir ye pudding broth

Should ye nails be black
You’re a goth
If ye hat be silk
You’re a toff
Nay, don’t be ye sloth
Cook yon pudding that you bought!

153 Lauri 10.16.06 at 1:43 am

*Disapproving Capybara Pose*

Front feet together
Wide, long schnozzle in the air
Bristly, planted ‘tocks.

154 Lauri 10.16.06 at 1:44 am

Well, I knew something creative was brewin’….I just didn’t know Aubrey was brewin’ it! Yay! ;)

155 Theo 10.16.06 at 2:33 am

Double, double, toil and… wait, “pudding broth”??!??

156 Aubrey 10.16.06 at 2:45 am

Nice, huh?

157 lauowolf 10.16.06 at 2:58 am

Help. Help. Bunny-folk!
I’m rabbit sitting, and the bun’s real mom had to leave before she stocked up for them.
There’s lettuce there, and a list of don’t-buy.
But what do they *like*?
I assume no tuna….
–bewildered catlady

158 moxey 10.16.06 at 2:59 am

I’m going to go against the grain here and say that those overly large rodents are not the least bit cute. Not even a little bit!

159 little miao 10.16.06 at 3:03 am

“I disapprove of cute,” says Mr. Capybara before sipping his tea and straightening his monocle.

160 Aubrey 10.16.06 at 3:07 am

Lauowolf:

Parsley. I saw some eating parsley on YouTube. Alfalfa pellets – I saw them eating ‘em on CO not long ago – remember? Also, my boyfriend – who has bun experience – has confirmed that they like those alfalfa bits.

Sorry I can’t help more. Got no pets here.

161 little miao 10.16.06 at 3:09 am

Bewildered catlady: I have no rabbit experience, but my impression is that rabbits like organic timothy hay and specially made rabbit pellets, as well as some fresh greens. I hoep that helps!

162 haha 10.16.06 at 4:11 am

-de lurking from the days when Theo put his cool additions under his name link.

For all the song masters out there, here is an ear worm that has been worming in my ear since I saw this.

Do you know the Kookabura song?

Besides, how cool is it when a person can use Kookabura and Capybara together?

Capybara sits by the old Gum tree.
Merry, Merry king of CO is he.
Laugh Capybara,
Laugh Capybara,
Save some tea for me.

Although I would rather have some Choc. Pudding than tea…

Love ya all

-relurking

163 suda nim 10.16.06 at 4:26 am

HaHa: HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT SONG? Do you know what a comfort it is to realize I’m not alone in the universe?

Laowolf:

I’d just go to the pet store and ask. I know there’s some variety of hay pellet made for them.

Also, the house rabbit society has a page on care. The diet FAQ is a few lines down:

http://www.rabbit.org/care/index.html

164 christina 10.16.06 at 9:05 am

Oh saw some in peru – if you are interested they have these birds that live on them very symbiotic, they clean them and in return eat the fleas off them – this picture gives you a good idea of size.

that song’s pretty well known, doncha know, suda nim. (nice suda nim, btw, :P )

166 jaypo 10.16.06 at 12:21 pm

Christina, are you *sh****in’* me, the size of a DOBERMAN?!?! OMG. I’m trying to imagine the squeak. Ear deafening?

167 Emc^2 10.16.06 at 1:09 pm

Kookabura… Oh, dear…

My professional choir was on tour in Australia (and New Zealand) in 2001. Every time the bus would go past a tree containing a kookabura… Well, these are professional singers; you can guess what happened.

Earworm, schmearworm. Try three-part harmony and/or a round for _miles_…

169 Redzilla 10.16.06 at 1:22 pm

You know what other song you can sub the word capybara in?
The Eagles’ “Desperado.”

Capybara, why don’t you come to your senses?

170 Theo 10.16.06 at 1:47 pm

LOL RedZ and HaHaBurra. How about Handel’s Messiah? Dun, dun, dun, bum bum bum, dun dun dunnn, dun.

CAPYBARA! CAPYBARA!

172 grandefille 10.16.06 at 2:22 pm

1. Thanks EVER so much for the lovely capy photos. And hilarious comments.

2. For those who might die of Teh Cute, be warned that this next comment is not for the faint of heart:

When content, capybaras hum.

Yea verily, I have witnessed this. En masse. As the gentleman who was raising them arrived home from work to feed them, they sauntered toward the fence to greet him, *humming*.

It was a lovely moment.

(BTW, capybaras will glance sideways disapprovingly at one, as well. It’s a little alarming. But it cuts down on the foolishness. All third-grade teachers should have one.)

173 grandefille 10.16.06 at 2:26 pm

Darn double-post. Now the capys will be disapproving of ME.

I am so *ashamed*.

174 suda nim 10.16.06 at 2:31 pm

pheral — if that’s the case, how about a nice sing-along of “Tie me kangaroo down”?

175 carolina 10.16.06 at 2:35 pm

They hum? Really? Awwwww. God DOES have a sense of humor.

176 carolina 10.16.06 at 2:37 pm

I’d like to see some more disapproving bunnies, please . . .

177 michellemybelle 10.16.06 at 2:51 pm

They hum? Capybaras keep getting neater and neater as this thread goes on.

178 Theo 10.16.06 at 3:17 pm

GrandeFille — no worries.
;)

179 christina 10.16.06 at 3:28 pm

the are schmelly, too though, and bite your hand right off so easy on the attempts to snuggle them. You can find them in the jungle in Peru in abundance though if you do want to try it out. Oh but carefull, their main enemy are crocs so that would be a worry for you, too if you decide to hang out with them too much

180 Helene 10.16.06 at 3:29 pm

What’s going on? Why no new posts? I need my C.O. fix!!

*goes into withdrawal*

181 Teughcats 10.16.06 at 3:46 pm

I was also a little surprised at no new posts yet today, but now I’m LMAO at the songs! I’m trying to come up with a good twangy country one but I guess I’m just not clever enough. Anyone? Anyone? (Ben Stein voice)

182 Theo 10.16.06 at 3:46 pm

Helene — I’m checking.

183 suda nim 10.16.06 at 3:51 pm

Beethoven’s Fifth:

ca-py-ba-RAH! ca-py-ba-RAH! Capybara-capybara-capybara! etc.

This also works with “Stand By Your Man,” as shown on SNL.

184 christina 10.16.06 at 3:56 pm

What about the classic Capybara song by Barry Manilow about Lola the showgirl?

185 Theo 10.16.06 at 3:57 pm

“I wish they all could be capybara girrrrrls…”

186 Redzilla 10.16.06 at 3:58 pm

The other animal that hums en masse when content: the hippy. But, like Cinnamon, I don’t approve of hippies.

187 Theo 10.16.06 at 3:58 pm

Christina — no, you’re thinking of that guinea pig lounge standard, “Cavy Cabana.”

188 Redzilla 10.16.06 at 3:59 pm

Her name was Lola
She was a showgirl
With Capybaras in her lair
and dissaproval down to there

189 Theo 10.16.06 at 4:00 pm

No no no! You’re singing it wrong! Aaaaargh!!

190 Redzilla 10.16.06 at 4:03 pm

Apparently Theo’s disapproval goes a bit further than “there.”

191 Theo 10.16.06 at 4:06 pm

Hey, quit staring.

192 suda nim 10.16.06 at 4:07 pm

Not capybara-related, but you can switch the words and tunes to “Amazing Grace” and the theme from “Gilligan’s Island.”

193 Laurie C 10.16.06 at 4:08 pm

(to the tune of “La Cucaracha”)

La capybara, la caybara
Disapproves of what you do
If he is happy and if he wants to
He will hum and hum at you

194 ceejoe 10.16.06 at 4:17 pm

OMG, I am actually listening to Barry Manilow’s greatest hits today! bwahahaahaha…
Yes, I know I have abysmal taste in music…

195 Redzilla 10.16.06 at 4:27 pm

What about:
Tie a capybara ’round the old oak tree

(Although that would surely be met with withering disapproval.)

And kudos to LaurieC, who has contaminated my brain FOREVER!

196 Laurie C 10.16.06 at 4:30 pm

(bows humbly to Redzilla) Sorry, babe.

197 Sandy 10.16.06 at 4:31 pm

Look like they could make nice pillows. :)

198 Theo 10.16.06 at 4:54 pm

List of words in song lyrics that are most easily swapped with “capybara”:

1) Kookaburra
2) Hallelujah
3) California
4) Cucaracha
5) Desperado (LOL!)
6) Dun-dun-dun-DUNNNN
7) “pretty feather” (??!?)
8) Ev’rybody (maybe?)
9) Salmonella (still searching…)
10) um… carbonara?…

199 Subhangi 10.16.06 at 4:59 pm

Theo -

CHIQUITITA.

Suda Nim -

“Kookaburra” is the only earworm I have from my Girl Scout days!!! We even translated it into Hindi and sang it!

200 Redzilla 10.16.06 at 5:02 pm

Rounding out the Eagles’ trifecta:

“Capybara” (Desperado)
“Hotel Capybara”
“Oooh-ooh, capybara” (Witchy Woman)

201 michellemybelle 10.16.06 at 5:04 pm

Do Girl Scouts in other countries sell Girl Scout Cookies too?

202 suda nim 10.16.06 at 5:04 pm

Theo, that leads to:

“Welcome to the Hotel Capybara”

“I wish they all could be Capybara girls”

“Capybara dreaming.”

203 suda nim 10.16.06 at 5:05 pm

Redzilla, apparently GMTA.

But you can also put Capybara dressing on your salad.

204 Aubrey 10.16.06 at 5:07 pm

Had to run into a nearby Starbucks this AM, to get a lowfat cappucchino. It was weird. Waiting on me was a cappi-bara-ista.

I would have complained – he was so disapproving of my lowfat request – but I was afraid that they’d bring out their cappi-barristers against me. And I have no law experience.

205 Helene 10.16.06 at 5:08 pm

*shivers in pain at the lack of new pics*

206 suda nim 10.16.06 at 5:09 pm

You know, there had better be a new photo posted soon, or we’re all going to just implode.

There would probably be disapproval of that, too, though.

207 Theo 10.16.06 at 5:09 pm

Aubrey… that was so low, it didn’t register on my capybarometer.

208 musicchick2 10.16.06 at 5:10 pm

“Capybaras adapt easily to life in captivity and become remarkably friendly. They are rather vocal for rodents, often giving vent to a series of strange clicks, squeaks and grunts” http://www.rebsig.com/capybara/ Hmmm…. don’t say nuthin’ ’bout that there ‘humming’ behavior… uh..huh (Spoken in Sling Blade voice)

209 Helene 10.16.06 at 5:11 pm
210 ceejoe 10.16.06 at 5:14 pm

211 Theo 10.16.06 at 5:19 pm

CeeJoe sobs
Because the slobs
Won’t post new gobs
Of fuzzy blobs.

212 Redzilla 10.16.06 at 5:21 pm

You don’t suppose this lack of new posts has been caused by the capybara’s disapproval of cuteness?

213 jaypo 10.16.06 at 5:23 pm

“(to the tune of “La Cucaracha”)”
Stanza 1:
(see Laurie C)
Stanza 2:
La capybara, la capybara,
You must give in to his demand!
If he’s unhappy and disapproving,
He might bite off your hand.

Hey, how may of you are Capybara-corns?! My b=day is Jan. 17.

214 Redzilla 10.16.06 at 5:29 pm

One way to lose weight:
capybariatric surgery. It makes you disapprove of all food except leafy greens.

215 Aubrey 10.16.06 at 5:38 pm

You know, too much disapproval can prove to be dangerous. It can lead to strain of the eyelids – always at half-mast – and nose – always held in the air; if these aren’t careful, they’ll capyperish.

216 MamaDawn 10.16.06 at 5:38 pm

I’m a huge Capybara Manilow fan!! I have a photo of me with him in my office, and yes, he looks disapproving.

217 ceejoe 10.16.06 at 5:51 pm

MamaDawn! You’ve met him? eeeeeeee!!!!

/see what happens because of cute withdrawal?? I’m becoming a groupie!/

218 Subhangi 10.16.06 at 5:55 pm

Michellemybelle –

Dunno if they sell cookies (I never did.) Egads, all I remember is the “Kookaburra” song and using all the Girl Scout whistles to call the neighbourhood dogs. ;)

219 Mia 10.16.06 at 5:56 pm

Is Meg OK??

/compulsively checking back for new posts every few minutes…/

220 MamaDawn 10.16.06 at 6:05 pm

Yes, I met the real Barry. I almost puddinged in my pants I was so excited.

221 ceejoe 10.16.06 at 6:06 pm

LOL, MamaDawn… I imagine I would do the same.

222 zelda 10.16.06 at 6:07 pm

My goodness! I’ve been away these past several days, and didn’t realize Meg put this up last Friday. What gives, Meg?

I lurve capybaras, but didn’t know it ’til now.

223 Ken 10.16.06 at 6:13 pm

…Must…hang…on…starting to go through serious withdrawel symptoms…need new…pictures…

224 Aubrey 10.16.06 at 6:17 pm

I think Meg’s hard at work, capybar-tering for new posts. Hang on, peeps!

225 Dewi CasGwent 10.16.06 at 6:26 pm

Is Meg and Sparky okay? Will CO have to organise, cute pet and pudding care packages for the cutemeisters, and those in severe withdrawal?

Dewi

226 suda nim 10.16.06 at 6:37 pm

I had completely forgotten that the Kookaburra song came from Girl Scouts. I’d pretty much sublimated the trauma of those years.

The *unofficial* songs we learned were pretty darn educational, though…..

227 ceejoe 10.16.06 at 6:42 pm

New posts on SOMC!!!!

228 Redzilla 10.16.06 at 6:49 pm

Plus, over at The Daily Kitten, marmie kitteh with gihugic paws.

229 Marty 10.16.06 at 7:02 pm

I’m sick of these fugs. New pics plz!!!

230 jaypo 10.16.06 at 7:08 pm

I was just over at the Daily Kitteh and the current sweetums is Finnish…which made think of Scofield. Where has Scofield been, I wonder…?!

231 piegrrrl 10.16.06 at 7:22 pm

Capybaras were not invented by god. Capybaras were drawn into existence by James Thurber.

232 Aubrey 10.16.06 at 7:25 pm

“…Must…hang…on…”

It’s all a frame of mind, Ken…we must use our imaginations to picture of a new post…

233 Denise in Nebraska (to the rescue) 10.16.06 at 7:26 pm

So, I am here to rescue those of you who are yearning for new cuteness, while we wait for Meg to return (let’s hope she is not trapped under something heavy, like the mounds of C.O. submissions that have piled up, in her absence…): here’s what you should do: scroll up through these 200 some-odd comments to a comment made by “designerwhite” (somewhere in the middle…). This person is a highly creative cartoonist and cute supporter who has shared some links, after arguing that the pictured creatures here are related to the guinea-pig variety. He/she has made a creative student film that–to peruse the cute–you must click on the FIRST link he/she posted! It’s hilarious AND cute AND deals with the animated version of “Rosenpigs” (you will understand after you see it). There is also advertising where one can go to buy the “real life”, stuffed animal version of the Rosenpig. I’m sure I laughed my entire ass off, watching this little animated ‘toon, over and over again. Go toward the cuteness, people….

234 Theo 10.16.06 at 7:32 pm

I have actually spoken to Teh Meggles briefly (and I was *trying* to time it so I’d catch her at lunch, but no luck, she was in a meeting. Gah)

So just FYI, stand fast; one way or another there’ll be a new post soon. We take care of our peeps.

Speaking of SOMC, I was at Barnes & Noble and saw that they’ve published a book of Stuff on My Cat photos. Heh!

There are SOMC books and calendars out… they’re a big hit at my office.

Wow. When the conversation has turned to Barry Manilow and Girl Scout cookies we really do need new posts.

Here’s a nice twangy country one, Teughcats:

(To the tune of “Wildwood Flower”)
Oh, he taught me to sip tea and how to disapprove
With his nose in the air, o’er all others above
How I long to see him and his proud scornful stare
He’s gone and neglected…his sweet capybara

OK, so “stare” doesn’t quite rhyme with “capybara.”

LMAO Gryph! And I totally agree with piegrrl about James Thurber!

254 michellemybelle 10.16.06 at 8:02 pm

Gryph – A monocle! A waistcoat!

I am killed.

255 Theo 10.16.06 at 8:06 pm

FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF INTENTIONAL DYSLEXUS:
“Why yes, my nostrils ARE as big as my ass.”

256 ceejoe 10.16.06 at 8:11 pm

dang it again! stupid surf control blocks flickr now…
/pout/

257 Gryph 10.16.06 at 8:13 pm

I was going to add a little bowtie, but he disapproved.

258 Aubrey 10.16.06 at 8:14 pm

ChetsMom:

The ‘Feline of Doom’! I email alot of cats from MyCatHatesYou to a co-worker of mine, who is convinced that his cat, Java, is not cute, but:

259 Ren 10.16.06 at 8:24 pm

Have you guys read “Cappyboppy”? It’s about a family who had a pet capybara who swam in the pool. So cute. I’ve wanted one ever since.

260 Redzilla 10.16.06 at 8:30 pm

Does this capybara make my ass look big?

261 Aubrey 10.16.06 at 8:49 pm

Nah, Redz, you have a very cute cabybooty.

262 Snorglit 10.16.06 at 8:54 pm

Redz – baby’s got capyback!

OK, I interrupt this programming to interject my foster kitters: This is Herbie (of Herbie and Lovebug)

263 Redzilla 10.16.06 at 8:59 pm

Aw, I love kitteh fluff.

264 Lauri 10.16.06 at 9:06 pm

Aaaah, it’s so nice to know that the peeps can entertain themselves for days with one fantabulous picture!
The songs, the laughs, the capybarass!!! Heeeheeehee.

Aubrey and Theo and Red and suda, haha, and Laurie C, you have been speccapular!

And, Gryph! Love the monocle, vest and teacup!

Theo, the Department of Intentional Dyslexia is inspired! Or is that perspired!

Ah, this post has been appreciated to perfection! *sips tea and looks down nose* (LOL, little maio!)

265 suda nim 10.16.06 at 9:24 pm

Lauri, what you mean is that we’re really cheap dates.

266 lurkertype 10.16.06 at 9:25 pm

The only good thing is that y’all have written so many brilliant songs I’ll at least have a variety of tunes stuck in my head today. Rotating earworms.

(Ewwww. Isn’t that what they did to Chekov on Ceti Alpha V? KHAAAAAAAAAAAAN!)

Oh man I need a new post. Best get to SOMC and MCHU.

267 Aubrey 10.16.06 at 9:27 pm
268 AmyH 10.16.06 at 9:31 pm

Even this kitty is getting cranky without new posts:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/79954847@N00/271655818/

He’s in the big cat show at Madison Square Gardens. I couldn’t figure out how to get the entire photo page, but I put two other kitty pics on my flickr.

If you want to see more, go to http://www.azcentral.com and look for teh “Top Cats” link. That’s as techno as I get, sorry folks.

Redz:
I disapprove of being Forbidden Because I don’t have permission to access /u11/protoenli/large/6859633.camel.jpg on this server.

271 Redzilla 10.16.06 at 9:36 pm

Dang it. I hate when people on the internet won’t let me steal their photos.

Imagine pair of frowning camels.

272 AmyH 10.16.06 at 9:38 pm

I disapprove of being forbidden as well. Considering I once accidently (REALLY!) pulled up a porn site here at work, I didn’t even want to imagine what Redz’ site was all about.

273 Thalia 10.16.06 at 9:41 pm

Jaypo,

Greetings from Eastern Mass!

Thalia

274 mariser 10.16.06 at 9:54 pm

AWWWW, Herbie is all ecscatstic! How kyooot!

As for camels, just as well they were forbidden, I do believe!

278 Theo 10.16.06 at 10:32 pm

You should see TJ’s camels, then.

279 Lauri 10.17.06 at 12:56 am

Smokin’, smilin’ and yeemin’.

Yes, my nostrils ARE as big as my eyes. Still good.

280 Klystron 10.17.06 at 2:12 am

Most the capybaras I’ve seen were getting munched up on some nature show about the Amazon.

281 Andee 10.17.06 at 5:15 am

Well roll me in cinnamon and call me snickerdoodle! If capybaras make CO, can nutria be far behind?

282 core 10.17.06 at 7:48 am

~~wavy lines for the way-back machine~~ Years ago at the San Francisco Zoo, Daddy Capybara was getting frisky with Mommy Capybara, right in the middle of their herd of babies (which look exactly like the parents, only in miniature – with equally disapproving expressions) and in front of Ghod, everybody, a very embarrassed human family, and me, cracking up. I could just imagine Mommy Human having to explain “When a boy capybara likes a girl capybara very, very much…” to her puzzled children.

core,
At the LA zoo once, there was a big crowd around the monkey cage. It was funny to see some folks hightail it out of there so Junior wouldn’t see nature at work. The giraffes were getting frisky to, and that’s *quite* a sight.

Whoever(Im assuming the MOD) writes these captions is a genius. I come to Cute Overloaded not only to be overloaded with cuteness, but to LOL at the captions. Thanks so much!

290 Lars Goldschlager 10.21.06 at 1:25 am

Here in Venezuela, we call them “Chigüire”, and they also have a smaller cousin called “Picure”, and some of our people eat them for festivities, the meat is salted to conserve, and then cooked to remove the salt and rehidratate, they’re beautyfull and taciturn animals, you should see them wading, they look incredible.

P.s. Only a very few of us actually eat chigüire
